Chapter 2

Author: Sea Sia
“Elena, why didn't anyone tell me the healers had discharged you?” His eyes widened, then flickered with something like horror as he realized he forgot to pick me up from the hospital.

“No need” I said, my voice flat and strange to my own ears.

“Elena... about that day...” He stepped toward me. “You misunderstood. Victoria was terrified-”

“And I was left behind, beaten and abused just to send you the mindlink signal.”

My voice barely rose above a whisper.

Ashton inhaled, guilt flickering briefly across his face before he rested both hands on my shoulders and gently led me toward the dining table.

“The day we completed our mating ceremony,” he said quietly, “I told you what it means to stand beside an Alpha. You promised you would accept the burdens that came with it.”

His gaze settled on mine.

“Don't tell me you regret that promise now.”

Bile rose in my throat and, with a smile that never reached my eyes, I answered, “No.”

I did not regret the vow.

I regretted accepting you as my mate.

“I am not heartless, Elena.” Ashton sighed. “I know I failed you.”

He reached for my icy hand, his thumb brushing over my bruised knuckles. “So... let me make it right.”

His golden Alpha eyes softened.

“You have always wanted a family of your own. A bloodline to call yours.”

“I will give you my heir.”

His fingers tightened around mine, as though that single promise could erase the shattered remains of the pup I had already lost.

“Our first pup….your future Alpha.”

“I am ready now, Elena.”

“We will ask the Moon Goddess for another blessing tonight.”

“This time, I will not give you contraceptives.”

His voice was filled with desperate sincerity, as though offering me an heir could wash away the Moon Mirror broadcast... the scars covering my body... Victoria's name leaving his lips instead of mine... and the promise he forced upon me on the night our mating bond was sealed.

"Elena, Shadow Fang cannot have an heir right now. If you insist on remaining my Luna, never conceive my pup."

As though every full moon burning heat had not ended with bitter moonbane contraceptive waiting beside my bed.

As though every month he had ordered the pack healer to examine me personally, making certain I had not conceived an heir behind his back.

Every "accident" had been erased before it could ever become a heartbeat.

I miraculously had a child, and he personally killed it...he decided to have an heir now?

A faint smile broke through my tears.

“There is no need.”

“I no longer wish to bear your heir.”

The warmth vanished from his face.

“Elena.” His Alpha aura instinctively spilled into the room.

“This is not something to say out of anger. You dreamed of becoming the mother, I saw you seeing a cradle everytime you went to another woman’s baby shower.”

“If you truly wish to give me something...” I interrupted quietly. “Then sign this.”

I slid the blue-bound scroll across the table.

“What is this?”For the first time in years, uncertainty crossed Ashton's face.

During our years as mates, I had never placed anything before him except meals prepared with my own hands... warm smiles... and unconditional devotion.

I used to wait exactly like this, hoping he would spare me a single glance.

How laughable.

“I am building a sanctuary for orphaned wolf pups who lost their parents during the pack wars. I want the southern camp site for it.”

“Elena...” His voice caught.“ Is this the only thing you need?....” His face morphed with pity before he continued “You have always been too soft.”

“The packs will only continue taking advantage of your kindness.”

His words faded as soon as his gaze settled on the fading fingerprint bruises circling my throat before drifting to the tiny carved wolf toys scattered across the hall.

A long sigh escaped him.

“I will sign it.”

He never even unrolled the scroll.

“Whatever you ask. Just stop being angry with me.”

His Alpha signature burned itself onto the parchment with a streak of silver Moon energy.

The mating contract hidden beneath the final page shattered the instant his name was completed.

[Final Decree of Mate Rejection.]

For the first time in days...I almost smiled.

Five years ago, while traveling through the eastern packs in disguise, I was ambushed by a group of rogues.

I still remembered the way Ashton crashed into the battlefield in his massive black wolf form, ripping the rogues apart before shifting back. He draped his cloak over my bloodied body, his voice low and steady while chaos raged around us.

“Stay awake.”

Just two words.

But to a dying she-wolf, they sounded like the Moon Goddess herself had answered my prayers.

When I woke inside Shadow Fang's healing hall, the first face I searched for was his.

That was the beginning of my ruin.

Slowly, I began bringing him his favorite spirit wine after patrols, remembering the weapons he admired, sitting through endless strategy meetings just to hear him speak.

Anything, just to stay close to him.

Just to make him smile.

I confessed once.

He rejected me.

I confessed again.

Again.

Ninety-nine times.

Ninety-nine times I laid my pride at my fated mate's feet.

The entire Shadow Fang Pack laughed.

Father warned me countless times.

They all said Alpha Ashton Kurt was not worthy of the Princess of Lycans.

But I believed something stubborn and beautiful.

If I loved him enough one day, his frozen heart would melt.

Only now, sitting across from him with the Mate Rejection Agreement lying between us did I finally understand the truth.

Alpha Ashton Kurt was never cold.

I was simply never the one he loved.

Ashton's povI reached the Lycan capital three days later. I had never hated a journey more in my life.Every mile brought me closer to the one place I had no right to enter-The royal palace.Elena was there. My mate.My wife. The woman I had spent five years believing would always be waiting for me.Except she was no longer mine.I had learned that the hard way. When the palace gates opened, I saw her immediately.Elena stood beside her father in the palace garden, wearing a simple silver gown. Her hair fell loosely over her shoulders, and there was a softness in her expression that I had not seen in years. She was smiling.Actually smiling. For a moment, I simply stood there and watched her.I had forgotten what she looked like when she was happy. Then I saw the man beside her.Adrian Vale. The new Lycan General. He stood close to her, holding a basket of apples while Elena laughed at something he had said.I stopped walking. My chest tightened.Adrian said something else, and Elena

The days that followed were strangely peaceful. For the first time in five years, I was allowed to do whatever I wanted. No one questioned where I went or complained if I spent an entire afternoon wandering through the gardens. No one watched me closely, waiting for me to make a mistake, and no one reminded me that I was supposed to behave like a Luna.I could wake up late, walk through the palace barefoot, sneak into the kitchens for fruit or sit beneath the old oak tree with a book until sunset.I could even climb trees.Apparently, that was where General Adrian Vale drew the line. The first time he caught me sitting halfway up the old apple tree, he nearly lost his composure.I had climbed that tree countless times as a child. The branch beneath my feet was thick and sturdy, and I was carefully reaching for a particularly red apple when I heard his voice from below.“Princess Elena.”I looked down.Adrian stood beneath the tree with both arms raised.I blinked at him.“What are you

Elena's PovThe gates of the Silverfang Royal Pack opened before our carriage had even reached them. For five years, I had dreamed about this place.I had imagined returning countless times.Sometimes in my dreams, I was still the foolish girl who had left everything behind for her mate.Other times, I imagined myself returning with nothing but shame.I had never imagined coming home with a broken mate bond and a heart that no longer knew what it wanted. The moment the carriage stopped, the royal guards dropped to one knee.“Welcome home, Princess Elena.”My fingers tightened around the edge of my gown.Princess.The title I had abandoned. The title I had once believed meant nothing compared to being Ashton's wife. The carriage door opened.I stepped down. And the moment I looked ahead, I forgot how to breathe. My father was standing at the bottom of the palace steps-The Lycan King. But he was not looking at me like a king.He looked like my father. His eyes were already red.For one se

Ashton’s povI slowly turned back. “What?”“The miscarriage caused extensive damage.” His voice became quieter. “We tried everything we could but she lost too much blood. The pregnancy had already become unstable after the trauma she suffered during the rogue incident.“We managed to save her life, but the damage to her womb was permanent.”My eyes opened. “So she cannot have children again?”“No.”The word struck harder than any blade. I staggered backward.Elena had always wanted children. I remembered the way she used to stop whenever she saw wolf cubs playing in the courtyard. The way she secretly collected tiny wooden toys. The way she once asked me whether our first pup would have my eyes or hers. I had laughed. I had told her she was thinking too far ahead. And then I had made certain there would never be one. Until she became pregnant anyway. My child had existed. My child had died. And I had not even known. I pressed my fist against my chest.“Was she in pain? Why…Why didn’t s

Ashton’s povFor the first time in five years, I woke up without feeling Elena through the mate bond.I remained still for several seconds, staring at the empty space beside me before I saw her sitting by the window her long hair fell over her shoulders as she wore the pale blue dress she had worn on our wedding night, looking absolutely ethereal. My heart lurched.“Baby, you are back, I knew you wouldn't leave me behind. I will send them all away, send that Victoria so far that not even her shadow touches you. I won’t look at her ever again…no, I won’t look at anyone but you, I promise.”I stumbled out of bed, almost tripping before I ran towards her trying to embrace her only for my hands to catch air.She was gone…no one was sitting by the window. There was only an empty room and the pale light of dawn spilling across the floor.I spun around, roaring her name as if the world had snatched her from me, searching every room to see where was she goneNothing. My claws dug into my palms

Third person povHe turned sharply and covered his mouth, bile burning the back of his throat as his stomach violently contracted.No.Elena could not have done that. She had loved him for five years. She had followed him through every humiliation, every cold shoulder, every night he left her alone.“No...” Ashton wiped his mouth with a shaking hand. “No, she would not fucking do that.”Then it happened. The mate bond tore.A savage pain ripped through his chest so violently that Ashton screamed, his entire body convulsing as he tried to breathe.Elena! The pain was unbearable. It felt as though someone had reached inside his chest and was tearing something living from his very soul.Ashton gasped desperately, his entire body convulsing as he tried to breathe.“No... no, put it back.” His eyes had turned completely feral. “ELENA! YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO ME!”Silver fur began spreading across his arms as his bones shifted beneath his skin. The Elders immediately stood. “Alpha Ashton, contr
