Chapter 8

Author: Summer Dream
When I woke up at the infirmary, Claude was sitting by the bed. His eyes were bloodshot, as if he hadn't slept all night.

"I might've gone too far last night." He raised a hand to touch my forehead, but I pulled away.

"Noble Alpha, you'd better keep your distance. After all, you wouldn't want a vile she-wolf like me to tarnish your reputation, would you?"

My voice was ice-cold, and it inexplicably irritated Claude.

"That's enough, Heather! Victoria's already agreed to let what happened last night slide, and yet you still have the audacity to make a scene?"

I glared at him fiercely, as if he were my enemy. "A scene? In your eyes, I'm always the one making scenes, always the unreasonable one. Get out! Go be with your precious Victoria! It's not like you'd believe anything I say anyway!"

With that, I turned my head away, refusing to look at him anymore.

This behavior seemed to anger him further.

He suddenly leaned in, pinning both my hands above my head with one hand while the other gripped my chin, forcing me to meet his eyes.

"How dare you act so self-righteous?" His breath washed over my face. "You're the one who made Victoria look bad over the authorship issue. We've already found the evidence, so is it really that hard for you to admit fault?"

Looking at him from such close proximity, I suddenly realized how unfamiliar this face had become.

"I told you, I didn't sabotage the spell. What I tore up was just the original manuscript. It had no effect on the s—"

"Shut your mouth!" He cut me off roughly. "Even now you're still lying? Heather, when did you become so vain and vicious? Isn't this all because you're jealous of how I treat Victoria? You want my affection, don't you?"

A flicker of obsession passed through his eyes. "Fine, since you want it so badly, I'll give it to you."

He lowered his head, ignoring my struggles as he forcibly tore open my collar.

His warm lips landed roughly on the side of my neck, carrying the weight of punishment.

He wasn't wrong. There was a time when I'd longed for this kind of deep intimacy with him. But I understood what he was doing to me now wasn't love, but humiliation.

It was the punishment a master inflicted on a disobedient pet, an attempt to use primal instinct to break my will.

His actions only made me feel disgust.

Just as his teeth were about to pierce my gland, I somehow managed to summon a burst of strength from somewhere deep within my already weakened body.

I wrenched my head to the side and bit down on his forearm with all my might.

Blood spread across my lips, its metallic taste filling my mouth.

Claude grunted in pain, his movements halting abruptly. He stared at me in disbelief, momentarily dazed as he looked at the deep, bone-baring teeth marks on his arm.

Seizing the opportunity, I shoved him away and scrambled off the bed. Then, I wiped my mouth repeatedly, as if it had touched something utterly filthy.

At last, the tears broke free—not just from hurt, but also from relief.

I looked at him, my gaze utterly hollow. "Claude, you truly disgust me."

Claude froze on the spot, as if he hadn't expected me to describe him as disgusting.

"This bite is to mourn the ten years I have given to a heartless wolf."

With that, I turned and rushed out without sparing him another glance.

Claude stood there dumbfounded. He instinctively moved to go after me, then abruptly stopped in his tracks.

Behind me came his enraged voice, "Heather, don't bother coming back! If you won't be Luna, there are plenty who will!"

I smiled self-deprecatingly. Still, I didn't look back.

Half an hour later, I stood at the security checkpoint at the human airport in new attire.

I took out my phone and noticed dozens of missed calls, all from the Council of Elders. They probably wanted to inquire about the defense spell.

I pried out the SIM card expressionlessly and, with a flick of my wrist, dropped it into the nearby trash bin.

Goodbye, Moonwing pack.

Goodbye, Claude.

From this moment on, Beta Heather ceased to exist.

And in her place, there was only Heather Ashwood—a human and a designer.

With a deafening crash, the other two vampires lunging at them were sent flying by a single kick from Mr. Wulfric. They hit the ground and didn't get up.He cast a brief glance at the scratch on Claude's arm, then pulled a small bottle of medicinal liquid from his pocket and poured it over his wound."This is the royal family's miracle medicine. It's specially formulated for minor injuries and won't leave any scars."It all happened too fast.Claude stood frozen in place. He looked at his instantly healed wound, then glanced at me standing beside him, completely unharmed. There wasn't even a wrinkle on my dress. There was no such thing as coincidences. Someone had orchestrated this.Claude's meticulously planned act of heroic rescue had only ended up benefiting someone else instead."Let's go, Heather." Mr. Wulfric took my hand, not sparing Claude another glance. "The air here is polluted. I get sick just smelling it."I looked at Claude one last time.He stood in the shadow

Claude scoffed and clenched his fists tightly. "Found your next mate so quickly, have you? Guards!" He pointed at Mr. Wulfric. "Fire him immediately. He is never to set foot in Aurora again!""Claude, this has nothing to do with Mr. Wulfric."I tried to intervene, but Mr. Wulfric gently held me back. There wasn't a trace of panic on his face. On the contrary, he looked like he was thoroughly enjoying the whole thing.Just then, the door burst open.Claude's subordinate ran in, his face deathly pale. "Alp—I mean, Mr. Thorne, we can't fire him."The subordinate stole a glance at Mr. Wulfric as if he'd seen a ghost.Claude frowned with displeasure. "And why not?"Trembling, the subordinate shoved a tablet in front of Claude and explained quietly, "We just found out Mr. Wulfric isn't just some managing director."Not only is he the legendary lunatic who took on ten Alphas alone, but he's also the Alpha King who rules the entire werewolf kingdom.""What did you say?" Claude's voice

Around us, whispers began to stir as countless curious eyes darted back and forth.I didn't stand up. Instead, I just looked at him calmly."What's up?"Claude frowned, clearly displeased with my indifferent attitude. He waved his hand, signaling everyone else to get lost."All of you, out!"The executives, as if granted a pardon, hurriedly ushered the employees out of the design department. The vast office space emptied out, save for Claude and me.Claude pulled up a chair and sat down. In a softened tone, he said, "I know you've been wronged, but I've already locked Victoria up. Now that the truth is out, all the pack members know she set you up."He extended his hand toward me. "Come back with me. The Luna position is still yours, and command of the Defense Department will be yours too. As long as you return, I'll let bygones be bygones."Let bygones be bygones? I let out an exasperated laugh. There he went again with that tone, as if forgiving me was some great favor he

Not long after, the ticking time bomb that'd been buried in the Moonwing pack finally went off.During my lunch break, I put on my headphones. On my computer screen, footage of the Moonwing pack's recent situation was playing. It was footage that only wolves with high-level pack clearance could see.Of course, I'd turned in my clearance long ago. But I'd hacked into their system. On the screen, Victoria was reluctantly being pushed onto the altar by the elders. The elders' expressions were grim as one of them said, "Ms. Grimm, we have found you a new crystal ball. Please restore the defense spell as soon as possible. There are outsiders invading the border again, so we must take immediate action."Victoria's face turned deathly pale, her forehead slicked with sweat. She looked toward Claude for help. But he turned his head away, as if deliberately waiting to see her make a fool of herself.Urged on by the crowd, she reluctantly placed her hands on the crystal ball and chanted t

On the weekend, I was at the stray animal rescue shelter where I'd signed up to volunteer.Perhaps it was the scent of a "fellow creature", but the stray dogs, usually so wary of humans, were always especially gentle around me."Careful! That's a newly arrived Mastiff mix. It's bitten three people already," Orlando Carey, the manager, shouted in alarm.Inside the metal cage, a fierce black dog was arching its back, a low growl rumbling from its throat.Instead of retreating, I quietly walked over. Then, I crouched down in front of the cage and looked directly into its eyes. There was no need to exert any dominance. Just the scent of having crawled through hell was enough to make this beast understand who the top-dog was.A few seconds later, the black dog let out a whimper and tucked its tail between its legs. Then, it lay down on the ground, exposing its belly. From behind came the sound of lazy applause."Bravo. Our great designer not only knows how to draw, but her animal ta

"Such hot tempers so early in the morning. Careful, you don't get wrinkles, ladies."A tall, lean figure was leaning against the doorframe. He looked to be in his 20s, fresh-faced and full of life. Yet, his eyes held the weight of someone much older.A nonchalant smile on his lips, he held an iced latte in one hand, the other tucked into the pocket of his dress pants.Anna's hand, extended toward me, stopped cold in the air.The same colleagues who'd been so condescending moments ago now wore fawning smiles, their voices honeyed."Mr. Wulfric, what brings you here? We were just teaching the new girl the ropes. She's way too clumsy and spilled coffee all over the place."Wulfric? I looked up, my gaze settling on him.So, this was the legendary, most mysterious executive of Aurora Group—the one who came in late and left early every day, yet no one dared to fire him."Is this how you teach someone the ropes?" Mr. Wulfric strode into the archives room. "Aurora Creative's rule is t
