Chapter 2

Author: Magnolia
I sat on the couch, numb, replaying every moment of the past three years.

He'd told me his wolf was damaged, that without careful nurturing, he'd die young.

And the treatments were impossibly expensive.

For three years, I'd worked myself raw, taking every filthy, back-breaking job. All for him.

Coworkers spreading disgusting rumors about me. A neighbor accusing me of theft. A gang of rogues cornering me at the border, burning me with a hot iron clamp. I faced all of it alone.

Back then, Ethan would hold me from daylight to dark, stroking my hair, whispering comfort.

I thought it was real. Now I knew it was just another part of the act, all to keep Sera entertained.

A buzz from the couch cushion caught my attention.

Ethan had left in such a rush that he'd forgotten his phone.

My hands trembled as I typed in Sera's birthday. It unlocked.

WhatsApp was flashing. Years ago, Sera had created a group chat.

I read through it from the very beginning. Every message was a knife sinking into my chest.

Three years ago, I'd moved to the edge of pack territory.

Ethan appeared out of nowhere and swept me off my feet.

"She actually ran off to hide there. Disgusting. Ethan, I'm so sick of that little sister of mine. Why don't you pretend to chase her? Use her up and toss her out!"

Ethan's reply was breezy.

"You broke the deal between our families. You refused to be my bride, then pushed me onto some nobody. Sera, have I been spoiling you too much?"

As I lowered my guard around Ethan, the group chat lit up with celebration.

Someone told him to upload the video from the first time he slept with me.

He'd posted the clip of us making the glass house together. They'd torn it apart in the comments.

"She treats a piece of junk glass like treasure. Obviously never seen anything nice."

When they saw me get my head cracked open defending Ethan from rogues, they called me weak, low-blooded filth.

The cruelty of their words made my body shake.

Tears blurred the screen. I forced myself to keep reading.

Maybe guilt caught up with him at some point. Ethan's messages gradually tapered off.

Once, while they were mocking me in full swing, all he said was: "You people really have nothing better to do."

But recently, Sera got bored. They couldn't wait to watch me humiliate myself again.

So they sent Ethan to deliver the final blow.

My bones felt like they'd been filled with lead. I couldn't even lift a finger.

I was an empty shell sinking into the couch, slowly caving in on myself.

So all of it had been Sera's doing from the very start.

The group chat suddenly came alive. Someone dropped a video.

Ethan had his arm around Sera's waist, and the way he looked at her was intense, focused. Nothing like the casual act he put on with me.

"Kiss her! Kiss her!"

"Ethan, Sera's putting herself out there—don't just stand there. Once you take over as Alpha, make sure Sera's our Luna."

I watched, dazed, as Ethan carried Sera into a side room.

The others whistled and cheered, as though those two were the ones who'd always belonged together.

The words on the screen swarmed like moths, fluttering behind my eyes.

I suddenly remembered the taste of mint candy on Ethan's tongue when he kissed me.

Now every spot that tongue had touched felt like it was rotting. Rotting until I wanted to peel my own skin off.

I picked up his phone and typed one message.

"You're a nest of maggots crawled out of a sewer. Why don't you all rot together underground?"

Within two minutes, WhatsApp kicked me out from the group chat.

A sour, metallic taste surged up from my stomach. I doubled over and dry-heaved three times.

Nothing came up. Just stomach acid burning its way through my throat.

The Moon Goddess really had never been watching over me.

It was Ethan's flawless performance that made me believe I was finally loved.

After a stretch of silence, the phone rang.

I answered.

"I'm coming back. I can explain everything. I—"

"Don't bother."

I looked around the little home we'd built together. My voice was strangely flat.

"Alpha, you've got your own path. No need to explain anything to me. My part in this show is over. I'm done acting, and I'm done with you."

Later, with the Alpha King's approval, I transferred to a larger aid organization. We took in the ones nobody wanted.Omegas whose awakening had failed, their wolves left incomplete.Wolves cast out of their packs not for any crime, but for standing on the wrong side of a power struggle, or for not standing on any side at all, just unlucky enough to be in someone's way.Half-grown pups who couldn't survive in human society but had no pack to return to, with wolf blood in their veins and human rules in their bones, belonging nowhere, kicked around like a soccer ball nobody wanted. They arrived in every state imaginable. Some were silent as stone, some were volatile like a pressure cooker ready to blow, and some pressed themselves into a corner and didn't speak a single word all day.I didn't think of myself as saving anyone.I just knew what it felt like to have no shore on either side, so I wanted to stand on one. That was all. When spring came, the wind blew up from the south.I was r

After that, I was busy with the wolf-human aid center. Most of what happened, I heard in pieces. After Sera's father was exiled, the marriage arrangement between the two families dissolved. She ended up near a human settlement on the outskirts.Someone spotted her in a restaurant, wearing an apron, carrying plates, wiping down tables.I heard about it during a cross-pack rescue operation. The border shelter was overflowing with elderly and vulnerable wolves evacuated from a conflict zone.I was kneeling on the ground, bandaging a young Omega pup's wound. Two volunteers chatting nearby mentioned her in passing. That was all. Now, my days were full. There was always too much to do.I had no spare thoughts for the past.People who no longer mattered were just names.

The day the ruling was officially handed down, I had dinner at home with my parents.Sera's maternal clan was still protesting. Howls echoed across the pack, one after another."Nora, you're too thin. Eat more."Mom placed a piece of meat in my bowl.I ate in big, hungry bites. For the first time in as long as I could remember, I felt at peace. After dinner, the doorbell rang. Ethan stood outside."This is the pack's official compensation paperwork for you."He handed me an envelope."All the terms are laid out. Keep it safe."I took it and said thank you.He nodded but didn't leave.I waited a few seconds and started to close the door. His voice came suddenly."Are you really leaving the pack?"I said yes. One word, clean and final.

After all those years, I finally had the courage to show my scars to the world.I filed a formal accusation against Sera for everything she'd done to me, including conspiring with Ethan to deceive me.In front of everyone, I became the key witness.Sera was sentenced to exile. She would never enter my world again. And then, inexplicably, Ethan started preparing for a Blue Moon ceremony.By the time the news reached me, I was crouching in the backyard of the aid center, planting flowers. The border soil was terrible. Hard as rock.I'd been digging with a small trowel for ages just to make one hole."Ethan says he'll mark you in front of the pack at the next full moon."I listened to my mother's voice message and kept working.Ethan really was something. He still acted as though none of it had happened. As though he were still the untouchable Alpha heir and I was still the helpless Omega who needed saving. He seemed to think that cutting ties with Sera and clearing away the obstacles was

Three days later, I dragged my broken body out of the hospital. They said I was stable enough to leave.Funny word, "stable."Stable enough to be weak. Stable enough to be irreversible. Stable enough to be defective. My phone had been buzzing all day.Even the hospital TV was running the story.Sera walked into the werewolf tribunal in her signature coat, hair down, surrounded by a crowd, with reporters and furious onlookers lining both sides.Someone hurled a water bottle at her car. It left a streak across the glass."Care to comment? Born into wealth, your troubled relationship with your stepmother warped you into a violent personality. Throughout middle and high school, as the ringleader of a bullying group, you systematically tormented your stepsister—burning her, verbally humiliating her—until she dropped out and developed PTSD. Is that correct?""You've been accused of poisoning your stepsister's water during her first shift, causing her to become an Omega. Is that true?""Sprea

"Blood! Why is there so much blood?"The shriek made Ethan finally look down and see me on the floor. He scooped me up. His hands were shaking."No... Nora, why are you on the floor?"I could barely keep my eyes open. I couldn't even tell if he was panicking."Ethan, do you see me?""What? I can't hear you.""Why did you come after me?"His body shuddered."Is this it? Does this count as settling the score for your beloved?"Ethan's mouth moved. He might have said something, but I didn't catch it.Everything went black. When I woke again, the hospital lights stung so badly I could barely open my eyes."Luna's body shows excessive damage, far worse than a typical Omega. It appears her wolf was disrupted during adolescent awakening.""When I was sixteen and going through my first shift, my stepsister put a potion laced with wolfsbane in my water."My voice came out flat. My eyes held nothing. That was how I became the weakest Omega in the pack. For a long time, I'd had my doubts. Both my
