Chapter 3

Author: Magnolia
I shut off the phone and tossed it aside.

I packed my things and was heading for the door when the low rumble of a luxury car blocked my path.

"Where exactly do you think you're going?"

Ethan kicked my small suitcase out of the way.

His hands locked around my upper arms in an iron grip.

"Stop being childish. Come home with me, now. I just dropped Sera off. Nothing happened between us. Don't overthink this. I'm exhausted, and I haven't even eaten."

I turned my head and noticed the marks on his neck and chest: lipstick, teeth.

I wrenched free with everything I had.

"Then go eat with Sera."

Ethan stared at me, then reached for my hand again, trying to pull me close.

"I know you're upset, but I need you to stop acting like a child. Sera's your sister, after all. What happened is ancient history. How long are you going to hold a grudge?"

When I stopped struggling, he took it as a sign I was listening. He pressed on.

"We have to move forward. You know what these three years have been like for us. If you leave me, what other Alpha is going to want you?"

A grudge, because the wounds had never healed.

He'd witnessed my pain with his own eyes, and now he was brushing it aside like it was nothing.

I lifted my gaze to the handsome face in front of me. It looked so foreign I barely recognized it.

"I left the key in the goat-milk box by the door. I didn't take anything of yours. If that's not enough, I can pay you back."

"How much could you possibly scrape together?"

He still thought I was throwing a tantrum.

"Everything we eat, wear, use, all of it top of the line. Your paycheck wouldn't cover a fraction of our utility bills. You've got no degree, no experience, a few thousand a month. Besides selling that scarred-up body of yours, what could you possibly—"

He caught himself. His voice dropped.

But I was already pulling off my shirt.

"Scarred up, but still functional enough. Right?"

I reached for the clasp of my bra, and he swore under his breath.

"Fuck."

He yanked off his jacket and wrapped it around me, teeth clenched.

"Christ, Nora. You're impossible."

He bundled me into the car and drove me to his real home.

"You're staying here tonight."

The room looked like it had been prepared for me long ago. The clothes were all in my favorite colors and sizes.

The toiletries were the same brands we'd always used.

Was this some new form of cruelty?

"I'll stay with you. A maid will bring dinner soon. Eat, then rest."

My stomach lurched.

I clamped a hand over my mouth, rushed to the bathroom, and dropped to my knees in front of the toilet, cracking my kneecap against the edge of the tub.

Ethan followed me in, hesitant.

"Nora, are you—"

I cut him off. I held up my phone, showing him the group chat.

The color drained from his face. He tried to explain.

"That was years ago. I stopped engaging with them after a while. Nora, I love you. That part is real."

"And these messages? Are you going to tell me you didn't spend three years lying to me? That you didn't want to film me?"

My lips were trembling, but I didn't stop.

"You had so many chances to tell me the truth. Even one day sooner—if you'd been the one to say 'it was all fake' before Sera announced it was a game she put you up to—I wouldn't have..."

The words died in my throat, as if something had clamped around it and wouldn't let go.

Everything I wanted to say turned into tears, turned into shaking I couldn't control.

Ethan reached out to wipe my face. I turned away.

He said nothing. He chose the most cowardly way, letting the damage hang in the air, neither admitting it nor denying it.

"I see."

I forced myself to stand and started gathering my things to leave.

But a massive wave of dizziness crashed over me.

Even then, all I could think was: don't collapse in front of him. That was my last scrap of dignity, pathetic as it was.

His voice reached me from far away.

"Nora!"

He was calling my name. His voice was shaking.

Later, with the Alpha King's approval, I transferred to a larger aid organization. We took in the ones nobody wanted.Omegas whose awakening had failed, their wolves left incomplete.Wolves cast out of their packs not for any crime, but for standing on the wrong side of a power struggle, or for not standing on any side at all, just unlucky enough to be in someone's way.Half-grown pups who couldn't survive in human society but had no pack to return to, with wolf blood in their veins and human rules in their bones, belonging nowhere, kicked around like a soccer ball nobody wanted. They arrived in every state imaginable. Some were silent as stone, some were volatile like a pressure cooker ready to blow, and some pressed themselves into a corner and didn't speak a single word all day.I didn't think of myself as saving anyone.I just knew what it felt like to have no shore on either side, so I wanted to stand on one. That was all. When spring came, the wind blew up from the south.I was r

After that, I was busy with the wolf-human aid center. Most of what happened, I heard in pieces. After Sera's father was exiled, the marriage arrangement between the two families dissolved. She ended up near a human settlement on the outskirts.Someone spotted her in a restaurant, wearing an apron, carrying plates, wiping down tables.I heard about it during a cross-pack rescue operation. The border shelter was overflowing with elderly and vulnerable wolves evacuated from a conflict zone.I was kneeling on the ground, bandaging a young Omega pup's wound. Two volunteers chatting nearby mentioned her in passing. That was all. Now, my days were full. There was always too much to do.I had no spare thoughts for the past.People who no longer mattered were just names.

The day the ruling was officially handed down, I had dinner at home with my parents.Sera's maternal clan was still protesting. Howls echoed across the pack, one after another."Nora, you're too thin. Eat more."Mom placed a piece of meat in my bowl.I ate in big, hungry bites. For the first time in as long as I could remember, I felt at peace. After dinner, the doorbell rang. Ethan stood outside."This is the pack's official compensation paperwork for you."He handed me an envelope."All the terms are laid out. Keep it safe."I took it and said thank you.He nodded but didn't leave.I waited a few seconds and started to close the door. His voice came suddenly."Are you really leaving the pack?"I said yes. One word, clean and final.

After all those years, I finally had the courage to show my scars to the world.I filed a formal accusation against Sera for everything she'd done to me, including conspiring with Ethan to deceive me.In front of everyone, I became the key witness.Sera was sentenced to exile. She would never enter my world again. And then, inexplicably, Ethan started preparing for a Blue Moon ceremony.By the time the news reached me, I was crouching in the backyard of the aid center, planting flowers. The border soil was terrible. Hard as rock.I'd been digging with a small trowel for ages just to make one hole."Ethan says he'll mark you in front of the pack at the next full moon."I listened to my mother's voice message and kept working.Ethan really was something. He still acted as though none of it had happened. As though he were still the untouchable Alpha heir and I was still the helpless Omega who needed saving. He seemed to think that cutting ties with Sera and clearing away the obstacles was

Three days later, I dragged my broken body out of the hospital. They said I was stable enough to leave.Funny word, "stable."Stable enough to be weak. Stable enough to be irreversible. Stable enough to be defective. My phone had been buzzing all day.Even the hospital TV was running the story.Sera walked into the werewolf tribunal in her signature coat, hair down, surrounded by a crowd, with reporters and furious onlookers lining both sides.Someone hurled a water bottle at her car. It left a streak across the glass."Care to comment? Born into wealth, your troubled relationship with your stepmother warped you into a violent personality. Throughout middle and high school, as the ringleader of a bullying group, you systematically tormented your stepsister—burning her, verbally humiliating her—until she dropped out and developed PTSD. Is that correct?""You've been accused of poisoning your stepsister's water during her first shift, causing her to become an Omega. Is that true?""Sprea

"Blood! Why is there so much blood?"The shriek made Ethan finally look down and see me on the floor. He scooped me up. His hands were shaking."No... Nora, why are you on the floor?"I could barely keep my eyes open. I couldn't even tell if he was panicking."Ethan, do you see me?""What? I can't hear you.""Why did you come after me?"His body shuddered."Is this it? Does this count as settling the score for your beloved?"Ethan's mouth moved. He might have said something, but I didn't catch it.Everything went black. When I woke again, the hospital lights stung so badly I could barely open my eyes."Luna's body shows excessive damage, far worse than a typical Omega. It appears her wolf was disrupted during adolescent awakening.""When I was sixteen and going through my first shift, my stepsister put a potion laced with wolfsbane in my water."My voice came out flat. My eyes held nothing. That was how I became the weakest Omega in the pack. For a long time, I'd had my doubts. Both my
