Later, I heard that after my "death", Jacob was so consumed by grief that his sorrow became the collective mourning of the entire Thorn Pack.

Those who had disrespected me faced swift punishment—especially the witch doctor. Jacob blamed her for my tragic end, and the pack's soil was stained crimson with spilled blood.

"He's such a hypocrite," my maid said bitterly. "Now everyone's saying how deeply he loved you, as if they've forgotten how much pain he put you through."

When we escaped the Thorn Pack that day, the pain of his betrayal almost made it impossible for us to leave.

It was Ansel who finally uncovered the truth. After interrogating the witch doctor, we learned that the drug Jacob had given me was a fake. There was no such thing as a potion that could sever the sacred bond between mates without pain.

Fortunately, after the news of my "death", Jacob seemed to lose his resolve. For a time, he refrained from betraying me further, which gave me a much-needed reprieve.
