Tragic Love

After a car accident leaves my girlfriend, Selene Voss, with temporary amnesia, she wakes up convinced that my best friend, Evander Thorne, is her fiance. Afraid that telling her the truth might worsen her condition, I agree to switch places with him. The arrangement is simple. We only pretend. Nothing more. Once Selene gets her memory back, everything goes back to normal. But six months have passed, and she shows no sign of remembering anything. Then one day, I stumble across a post online from someone in our city. "I lost my memory after a car accident and mistook another guy for my boyfriend. Now I've actually fallen in love with him. How do I explain this to my real boyfriend?" The top comment offers a simple solution. "Just keep pretending you have amnesia. You can't lose. If things work out with the new guy, great. If you regret it later, just say your memory finally came back." The author has liked the comment. I look up just as Selene and Evander walk through the door. She trails behind him with several shopping bags in her hands, and when she looks at him, the love in her eyes is impossible to miss. So, that's how it is. Somewhere along the way, Selene stops pretending. For her, this relationship has already become real.

Chapter 1
Kieran's POV"Kieran, you're home early today. Selene and I just got back from the grocery store. We picked up everything for chicken and wild rice soup. How does that sound? It's your favorite."Selene Voss followed Evander Thorne inside. She gave me a polite nod before heading straight into the kitchen.Ever since Selene lost her memory, I'd been stuck in an absurd situation just so I wouldn't have to leave her.I, Kieran Ashford, was her boyfriend.Yet somehow, I'd ended up living in the home she shared with Evander, treated as little more than a guest. And every day, I had to swallow my jealousy as I watched my girlfriend give another man all the love and attention that should have been mine.Every time I saw Selene and Evander holding hands or wrapping their arms around each other right in front of me, it tore me apart. The only thing that kept me going was the same promise I repeated to myself over and over.Selene would remember. And when she did, she'd remember me. Ev

Chapter 2
That kiss hurt more than I wanted to admit.Evander had promised me from the beginning that he would keep his distance from Selene. And for a while, he had.Whenever I was around, he'd been careful about every touch, every look, every moment that might cross a line. But somewhere along the way, that had changed.I couldn't even remember when it started. All I knew was that Evander could kiss my girlfriend now without a second thought, as naturally as if she had always been his."I know you're only looking out for me," Evander said. "But let's not rush into anything. Finding a decent apartment isn't exactly easy right now.Apparently, Selene had already thought of that. "I asked a friend to help me look a few days ago. She found two places that might work. They're both close to here and not far from Kieran's office."Evander had run out of excuses. After a brief pause, he finally nodded. "Alright. I'll talk to Kieran when he gets back."My eyes burned, but I refused to let the te

Chapter 3
On the elevator down, I couldn't stop thinking about Selene and everything she'd done over the past three months. Looking back, the signs had been embarrassingly obvious. She hadn't even been particularly good at pretending. I'd just been too willing to believe her.I'd explained every strange look, every slip, and every moment that didn't quite add up with the same excuse. She had amnesia.I was so lost in thought that when the people beside me stepped off the elevator, I followed them without thinking. It took me a moment to realize I was on the Women's Health floor.I'd already made it halfway down the hall before I noticed and turned to head back toward the elevator. Then I stopped. Someone familiar was standing farther down the corridor. Someone who had no reason to be there. Selene.I stared at her, confused. She was supposed to be at home making dinner with Evander.Without meaning to, I stopped just outside the examination room and heard the doctor speak. "You're pregnan

"Kieran, I'm so sorry. What I did to you was unforgivable." Evander's voice cracked. "You can hit me or yell at me all you want. I won't stop you. I deserve it."I just looked at him. "When did it happen?"That was all I wanted to know.Evander's face crumpled with guilt. "That night Selene and I got drunk. One thing led to another, and we slept together. We used protection, and afterward we took extra precautions. I swear to you, Kieran, we never thought she could end up pregnant."I don't know what went wrong. Maybe something failed. Maybe we were just unbelievably unlucky. But she's pregnant anyway."He hadn't told me a single word about any of it. All this time, I'd been the fool.I'd kept telling myself Selene was still the same woman I loved, trapped behind memories she couldn't reach. I'd trusted Evander just as blindly. He was my best friend. The one person I never thought I'd have to worry about. Whatever happened, I'd believed he would never betray me. Now I finally un

Third-Person POVSelene apparently hadn't expected Kieran to leave without putting up a fight. She stood there for several seconds, staring after him. Then, almost without thinking, she started toward the door.Evander's voice stopped her. "Maybe we shouldn't have made him leave this late." He was sitting on the couch, watching the doorway. "Kieran would never admit it, but he's always hated being alone in the dark. And it's already late.""Go after him. See if you can talk him into coming back for tonight. Or at least drive him to one of those apartments you found. She had barely taken another step when he spoke again."Oh, Selene? Before you go, could you grab the pain-relief cream for me? My knee's starting to hurt. I think I need to put something on it."Evander rolled up his pant leg, revealing a badly bruised, swollen knee.Selene stopped immediately. Whatever impulse she'd had to follow Kieran disappeared as she hurried back to his side. "Evander, look at your knee. It

I was about to block Evander too when a message from him came through. It read, "Selene was the one who insisted I wear the ring and post that picture. But I promise, the second she gets her memory back, I'm gone. I'll disappear for good. You'll never have to see me again, and I'll stay out of your lives."My thumb stilled over the screen. There was no point telling me any of this. The damage was already done. There was no undoing it.Selene might have been the one who gave him the ring, but Evander had still put it on his finger. She might have made the first move, but he'd still slept with her.And the baby didn't simply appear out of nowhere. He'd made his choices. Now he was acting as though promising to disappear someday could somehow erase them.I typed, "Whatever happens between you and Selene has nothing to do with me anymore. As of today, you and I aren't friends. Delete my number. I'll delete yours. Maybe then Selene will stop messaging me every time she decides I've d

Third-Person POVThe midday heat was unbearable, so the prospective buyers asked to view the house first thing in the morning.Naturally, the realtor was happy to accommodate them. That was how, bright and early the next day, while Selene and Evander were still fast asleep, the realtor arrived with several prospective buyers. Using the key Kieran had given them, they let themselves in and began wandering from room to room. The sound of the master bedroom door opening jolted Selene awake. Her eyes fluttered open, and it took her a moment to register the strangers standing in her doorway. Then she yanked the covers up and wrapped them tightly around herself. "What the hell are you doing in my house this early in the morning? I'm calling the police!"The realtor had been given clear instructions from Kieran and refused to back down. "Mr. Ashford hired our agency to sell the property, and these clients are interested in buying it."Selene let out a cold laugh. She grabbed her phone

"You've been living in my house all this time. The fact that I waited this long to take it back was already more consideration than you deserved."But you're welcome to stay if you want. I'll just have someone throw everything you own out with the trash. And that place you rented? Keep it. You and Evander can enjoy it together."Selene went quiet. When she finally spoke, her voice was hoarse. "When did you find out I got my memory back?""Doesn't matter. The moment you remembered everything and still chose Evander, we were done."Kieran hung up before she could say another word and blocked her number.Selene had thought she'd left herself with options no matter how bad things turned out. Now Kieran had taken that choice away from her. Evander was the only one she had left.Mistaking her silence for good news, Evander immediately perked up. "Well? Did Kieran change his mind? Is he keeping the house?"Selene was quiet for a moment before answering softly, "Go pack our things."Ev

Sure enough, Kieran's mother, Jenny, couldn't resist the chance to see the drama for herself. She took the train all the way there and even recorded everything so she could send Kieran the video afterward.Halfway through the wedding, a woman no one recognized suddenly stormed onto the stage and snatched the microphone from the officiant. "I object to this marriage!"The entire room fell silent. No one seemed to know who she was, and confusion spread across the guests' faces.Everyone except Evander. The color drained from his face. He quickly covered his face with one hand and quietly tried to slip away.Selene's expression darkened. Assuming I'd sent the woman to ruin her wedding, she was already about to call security and have her thrown out.But then the woman dropped a bombshell."Evander Thorne, you gave me an STI, and now you think you can just get married and pretend nothing happened? Not a chance!"Selene froze. "What did you just say?"The woman noticed the slight cu

Kieran's POV"Oh, great. Just what I needed." Mom's face immediately soured, and she tried to shut the door.Selene quickly stuck her foot in the doorway, stopping her. "I know you were at the wedding. Kieran asked you to go, didn't he? Where is he? I need to see him."Mom folded her arms and gave her a mocking smile. "You sent an invitation right to my doorstep. Of course, I went. I wasn't about to miss a show like that."And my son isn't someone you can toss aside and then expect to come running the moment you call."If you've got this much time on your hands, maybe you should spend it getting treated instead."Mom had always been patient and kind to Selene. Never once had she spoken to her like this.Selene stood frozen in the doorway, too stunned to respond.Mom let out a derisive laugh. "Let me guess what you're going to say next. You lost your memory, you mistook Evander for someone else, and deep down, Kieran was the one you loved all along?"Selene, do you seriously th
