Chapter 3

مؤلف: Bodhi Leaves
At 9:30 the next morning, Janet posted the latest version of the proposal in the Evercrest project group chat. I was only three pages in when my blood went cold.

She had used the one term Evercrest had explicitly banned that year. She had also included outdated figures Mr. Lloyd had repeatedly warned us not to use.

She had even managed to get Evercrest's chairman's name wrong while copying it from the previous year's press release.

I posted a warning in the group chat. "There are serious errors on pages three, five, and twelve. I don't recommend sending this to the client."

Janet replied immediately. "Zoe, aren't you being a little too sensitive? The AI pulled this together using information from all over the Internet, and there's nothing wrong with the logic."

I typed back. "The client's internal requirements aren't publicly available."

Jim jumped in. "Enough. Zoe, you refused to cooperate with the handoff, and now you're tearing down someone else's work. The Evercrest project isn't your chance to seek attention."

Seek attention?

Anger surged through me, leaving my fingertips numb as I stared at the words.

A second later, my phone rang. It was Mr. Lloyd from Evercrest.

I answered.

His voice was colder than usual. "Zoe, who sent this version of the proposal?"

I glanced toward the conference room. Jim and Janet were already setting up for the video meeting.

"Is something wrong with it, Mr. Lloyd?"

After two seconds of silence, he said, "You misspelled our chairman's name."

My heart sank.

"And page twelve uses messaging we explicitly told you not to use. It exposed us to regulatory risk last year. You know that."

Of course I knew. Mr. Lloyd had personally warned me about that exact restriction at 1:00 am, and I had flagged it in red.

His voice grew even colder. "If we don't receive a reasonable explanation by 10:00 am, Evercrest will suspend further consideration of this partnership."

I ended the call and went straight into the conference room. Janet was connecting her laptop to the main screen.

Jim's face hardened when he saw me. "Who told you to come in?"

I set my phone on the table. "Mr. Lloyd just called. There's a serious problem with the proposal."

Janet went pale. "That can't be right. The AI checked everything."

I looked at her. "AI doesn't know what Mr. Lloyd told me in private to avoid or what problems Evercrest ran into last year."

Her eyes immediately filled with tears. "If you knew about this, Zoe, why didn't you tell me sooner?"

I almost laughed. "I warned you in the group chat."

Jim slammed his hand on the table. "Enough. This isn't the time to point fingers."

Then he turned to me as if his next demand were perfectly reasonable. "Fix the proposal immediately. And you'll explain everything during the video meeting at 10:00 am."

I stared at him. "I thought you said you didn't need me."

Jim's expression soured. "Zoe, this is no time to get emotional."

Janet spoke softly. "The project comes first, Zoe. Please, just help us out."

I glanced down at my phone.

Vivian had sent me another message half an hour earlier. "You must sign the settlement agreement by the end of the day. If you don't, your claim will be treated as a bad-faith claim."

I looked up. "Where's my 88,000-dollar commission?"

Jim's jaw tightened. "Didn't the AI already issue the payment?"

The conference room went dead silent.

I held his gaze as a slow smile spread across my face. "Fine. Then let AI deal with the Evercrest problem too."

I sat down in the corner, pulled up the AI tool, and typed as they watched. "Draft a response stating that all errors in the Evercrest proposal have been corrected and all risks to the client have been resolved."

The AI generated a polished response almost instantly. I didn't change a word.

Bracing himself against the edge of the table, Jim finally forced the words out through clenched teeth. "I'm sorry."I didn't respond. He closed his eyes for a moment. "The 88,000 dollars will be paid today. Janet will be removed from the Evercrest project, and the bonus paid to her will be clawed back. Zoe will continue to lead the project."Only then did Mr. Lloyd nod. "Evercrest agrees that Zoe should remain in charge."He paused. "But from now on, Zoe must personally confirm every project milestone. Mr. Zeller, no one at your company is to bypass her again."Jim looked grim, but he had no choice but to nod. "Understood."My phone buzzed. A text from the bank appeared on the screen."88,000 dollars deposited into account ending in 3772."I stared at the numbers and almost laughed.AI hadn't been necessary after all. When the money actually reached my account, the bank confirmed it with a single text. After that day, Janet never appeared in the Evercrest project group chat

Maya's face turned bright red. She had been the one pressuring me to sign the settlement agreement that morning.Mr. Lloyd turned to Jim. "Then why did you ask Zoe to sign a form confirming she'd been paid?"Jim said nothing.I shared my screen and pulled up my bank transaction history, followed by the audit log from the company's enterprise AI system and the change log from the compensation approval portal.Together, the three pieces of evidence laid out a timeline no one could explain away.My commission payment was approved, then rejected by Jim. He later resubmitted the money as a project bonus for Janet. After that, a payment confirmation generated through Jim's AI account was posted to the project group chat, falsely claiming that the money had already been deposited into my account.I said nothing more. The evidence told the story better than I ever could. After reviewing the evidence, Evercrest's head of branding scoffed. "Mr. Zeller, your company used an AI-generated p

The message landed like a slap, and the entire room went silent.Janet's tears finally spilled over. "Of course Mr. Lloyd only trusts you with the project. You've been handling it this whole time. How was I supposed to compete with that?"She looked at Jim, her voice shaking. "Mr. Zeller, I really didn't know Evercrest hadn't approved the switch."Jim frowned. "Janet, this isn't the time."She blurted out, "But yesterday, you said Evercrest was just another client and that anyone could handle the project."You said that if I became the project leader, you'd make me a permanent employee by the end of the year and guarantee my bonus."The moment the words left her mouth, she froze.Jim went livid.I looked at him. "So, this was never about internal staffing. You were trying to give her credit for my work and hand her my commission too."Vivian immediately stepped in. "Zoe, don't make baseless accusations. The project bonus hasn't even been finalized."I opened the compensation

Vivian was the first to look rattled. She clutched her folder and took a step back. "We'll handle this internally. You didn't have to make a scene in front of the client."I looked at her. "Then let's handle it internally."I displayed my bank balance of 18 dollars and 20 cents on the conference room screen."That was my balance this morning."Then I opened my transaction history. There had been no 88,000-dollar deposit since payday.Maya frowned. "It could just be an interbank processing delay."I glanced at her. "So the AI generated a payment confirmation before the money even reached my account?"No one responded.I pulled up the AI-generated payment confirmation Jim had posted in the project group chat. "Mr. Zeller posted this."The trace ID was still visible in the bottom-right corner. During the ten-minute break we had just taken, IT had emailed me the audit log for the company's enterprise AI system.I opened it.Account: Jim ZellerTime: Yesterday, 2:17 pmThe prom

No one spoke in the conference room. Jim's already pale face took on a sickly cast before he finally managed a strained smile. He said, "Mr. Lloyd, this is just a disgruntled employee acting out. Zoe misunderstood how the company handled her commission, so she made some inappropriate remarks during the meeting."I ignored him and kept my eyes on the screen. "Mr. Lloyd, I can still save the proposal."Jim immediately relaxed, but my next words wiped the relief from his face."But this meeting needs to be recorded. I want it on record who will be responsible for the proposal going forward, the handoff to a new project leader, the commission dispute, and the source of the AI-generated material."After two seconds of silence, Mr. Lloyd nodded. "Agreed."The client call wasn't the only reason I had insisted on recording the meeting. The payment confirmation Jim had posted in the group chat wasn't just an ordinary screenshot. The company used an enterprise AI system integrated with it

  • An AI Ate My Commission   Chapter 4

At exactly 10:00 am, the video meeting with Evercrest began. On the screen, Mr. Lloyd sat at the head of the table. Behind him were two members of Evercrest's legal team and the head of branding. On our side, Jim sat in the center. Janet sat beside him, her face white as a sheet. I remained standing at the far end of the conference table.Mr. Lloyd didn't waste time on pleasantries. "Mr. Zeller, I need an explanation. Why was language we explicitly prohibited included in the final version?"Jim managed a tight smile. "Mr. Lloyd, there's been a misunderstanding. We recently made some staffing changes, and Zoe is handling the issue now."He turned to me and lowered his voice. "Zoe, say something."I didn't budge.Jim's smile began to crack. "Zoe, the client is waiting."I looked straight at him. "Mr. Zeller, I thought the issue had already been resolved."He stiffened.I set my phone on the table and turned the screen toward everyone. It displayed a statement I'd just had the AI
