Chapter 2

Author: Baked Strawberry Bun
I pointed at the mess in the living room to Ethan. "Then do the chores for me. Wash these clothes. Remember not to mix clothes with dark and light colors together. The dishes in the sink have been soaking for three days, so they may be a little greasy..."

Here came the cheap part-time helper, right?

"..."

Ethan said nothing and just turned around to get a cloth.

I lay down on the couch and started scrolling through my phone. I did not notice that when Ethan was picking up the cloth, his nail accidentally scraped the corner of the table, leaving a shallow scratch.

He stared at the scratch for two seconds, then lowered his head and started wiping the table carefully.

For the next week, Ethan became my full-time housekeeper.

I relied on him more and more.

When I worked overtime until late at night, there was always a hot meal waiting when I got home. He could not cook anything complicated and could only get pasta or fried eggs right, but he handled the heat perfectly. The eggs were crisp on the outside and soft inside.

When I had period cramps, he somehow came back with a bundle of dried wormwood despite me not saying anything and put it beside my pillow. He said, "These will keep you warm."

When I casually said that the flowers on the balcony were dying, he moved them by the windowsill the next day and set a basin outside to catch the rainwater. He said, "There's chlorine in the tap water. It's not good."

But the things that were abnormal about him never stopped.

While his body temperature was about the same as a normal person's during the day, it would get cold at night to the point that touching his arm at night felt like touching a cold stone.

No matter where I was, he always watched me from the corner of his eye. If I went near another man, even the delivery man, his wolf ears would quietly perk up and his tail would stiffen, and he would whine very softly.

He would stand on the balcony for half an hour every night before dawn and face the moon, letting out low howls. It wasn't loud, but the windows didn't exactly block the howling either. When I asked him why, he only said, "Habit."

Once, I invited my colleague Lisa over. When Ethan brought out some fruits, he did not hide his tail well, and half of it came out.

Lisa's eyes went wide. She tugged on the hem of my shirt and whispered, "Why does this werewolf you brought home keep staring at you? And a normal werewolf wouldn't get stuck mid-transformation. He even put your plate right in front of you and his off to the side. That is territorial behavior. He has marked you as 'his!'"

I did not take it seriously. "The doctor who treated him said he is a rogue. The reason he's stuck half-transformation is because there's some kind of toxin in his system that hasn't been cleared yet. He has just been exiled too and doesn't understand the rules of human societies. That being said, he's very capable. Look at how shiny he cleaned the floor."

Lisa hesitated. Before she left, she said, "You should at least read 'Werewolf 101'. Rogues are not like pets. When they obey someone as their master, they act like you're their only hope. Those who have just been expelled become even more attached especially."

I gave it a thought. Other than howling at night and staring at people, Ethan did not seem to have any real problems. Not to mention he was so capable too, so I did not think much of it.

But one night, when I got up to go to the toilet, I saw him on the balcony. He was howling softly at the moon with his wolf ears and tail fully exposed. Moonlight poured over him, and he looked like a wolf trapped in the human world all alone.

I did not disturb him and went back to my room quietly. Then, I suddenly felt that he might be far lonelier than I had imagined.

"Clara!" When Ethan saw I was wounded, his eyes went red in an instant. With a furious snarl, he turned around and snapped the intruder's neck in one bite.He shifted back into human form and rushed to me, holding me in his arms, his voice turning into sobs. "Clara, are you okay? Don't scare me!""I'm fine..." I forced a weak smile, though pain tore through my shoulder. "It just feels a little cold.""Hold on. I'll take you to get treated!" Ethan picked me up and ran toward the pack's infirmary. The pack's healer was already waiting. The moment we came in, she hurried over to help.Ethan set me on the stone bed as if I were extremely fragile, panic and guilt written all over his face. "This is my entire fault. I didn't protect you.""It's not your fault." I lifted my hand and brushed his cheek. "I rushed in on my own. I couldn't let you get hurt."The healer pulled the dagger out of my shoulder and cleaned the wound with special herbs. Then, she covered it with a thick layer of

"My Mate is not up to you to judge." Ethan told Kael in a cold voice. "Clara is the one I chose. No matter who she is, she is my only Mate in this life. If you disrespect her again, you'll regret it."Kael clearly did not fear him. He let out a cold laugh. "Have you been bewitched by this human? Humans are fragile and selfish and do not deserve you!"Suddenly, Kael lunged at me with lightning speedI shut my eyes in terror, but the attack I expected never hit me. Instead, all I heard was a heavy thump. When I opened my eyes, I saw that Ethan had already pinned Kael on the ground with one hand around his throat. Ethan's eyes were brutal, like he had his eyes fixed on a prey. "I told you that you won't touch her.""Sir!" Kael struggled. "You will regret this!""I never regret." There was no hesitation in Ethan's voice. "Say another word and I will maim you."Kael's face went white and he did not say another word again.Ethan released him and snorted. "Get lost."Kael scrambled to

Ethan and I were tangled up all night…Ethan suddenly asked, "Do you want to come back to the pack with me tomorrow? Everyone already knows you are my Mate. I want to bring you home to see everyone."I was getting a little scared inside as I shook my head on instinct. "I… I'm afraid they will not like me. I'm only human.""With me there, no one will dislike you. You're my Mate, partner of the Alpha King. They must respect you. And I want everyone to know that my Mate is the best person in this world," Ethan said.I looked at the determination in his eyes and finally nodded. "Alright. I'll go.""That's great!" He said as he pulled me into his arms. His hold was gentle but tight. "I'll protect you. I won't let you get hurt at all."He fell asleep holding me, whispering low against my hair. "Don't leave me."I curled closer into his arms and whispered back, "I won't."-The next morning, Ethan had already packed our things. The black SUV drove steadily along the road as we were

After I moved to my new place, my life went back into the same grind as before.I worked overtime every day only to come home to an empty apartment. I cooked for myself and did my own laundry. When I went to bed, the outer side of the mattress stayed empty.I still thought about Ethan. I missed his cooking, his soft ears, and bushy tail. But every time I remembered how he was the Alpha King now, that he had probably forgotten me already, I could feel the ache in my heart. Then, one night. I had just gotten off work and walked back to my new place. Just as I reached the entrance to the neighborhood, I saw a black SUV parked by the curb. A tall man stood beside it in a black coat. I knew him immediately.Ethan.My heart skipped a beat as I spun around, wanting to make a run for it. Then, his voice came from behind me. "Clara, stop."His voice was still low, but there was authority in it that did not allow refusal now. I froze where I was, shaking, too afraid to look back.He had

After Ethan left, my life went back to how it used to be.When I came home from work, the apartment was empty. There was no hot dinner, no clean floor, no werewolf who would quietly protect me.I waited for him every day. I stared at that black wolf hair. I kept refreshing every bit of news about werewolves on my phone, hoping to see any news about him. A whole month had passed, but there was still nothing.Lisa tried to talk me out of it. "Stop waiting. The werewolves' territories are so far away. He is a leader of a pack, no less. He has probably forgotten you already."I refused to believe that. "He said he would come back. He wouldn't lie to me."But the days kept crawling by, and he still did not show up. Doubt started to appear in my mind, doubting if he was ever coming back. His memories had returned. He was the leader of a pack again. Meanwhile, I was just a regular human. We were never from the same world. One afternoon, at lunch in the company cafeteria, I heard my co

  • An Alpha's Heart   Chapter 6

Ethan was acting stranger and stranger. He went out a lot more than before, and he barely spoke every time he came home. Sometimes, he would just stand at the window staring outside for a long time, his eyes empty as if he was thinking about something so far away.He still did the housework perfectly, but he wasn't all over me like the way he used to. He even started avoiding my gaze on purpose.I could feel it.He was pulling away from me.One night, I could not hold it back anymore. "Are you planning to leave, Ethan?"He froze then turned to look at me, a complicated emotion in his eyes. "Why would you think that?""You keep dodging me. You keep going out." My voice lowered. "Are you remembering your family? Or maybe your old pack?"He stayed quiet for a long time before he finally nodded. "I remembered a few things. I'm not a Rogue. I'm the leader of a pack. A traitor used a unique Wolfsbane on me. That's why I lost my memory."My heart sank. So… I was right."Then... are
