LYSSANDRA

I’m still furious.

It's not just anger I'm feeling, but deep down inside where I won't even allow myself explore, I'm hurt.

I'm hurt that he lied to me, I'm hurt that I stupidly believed him, I'm just hurt.

I'm also angry and, I tell myself it’s because of what Erden’s brothers said, because of the audacity of it all, but the truth is uglier. I’m angry because I want to talk to Erden.

And that makes me even more disgusted with myself.

I grab my phone before I can think twice and dial Meredith’s parents. It’s better to focus on something real, because obviously Erden is as real as a mirage.

Mrs. Chest answers on the second ring, her voice as warm as I remember. “Hello? Who is this?”

I stop, unsure how to answer. Then I go with the easiest answer. “Hello, Mrs. Chest. I'm Lyssandra. You called earlier?”

“Lyssandra, darling. I'm sorry to have phoned so early.”

“Good afternoon,” I manage. “It's perfectly fine. I wanted to ask what time would be convenient

ERDENShe doesn’t wait for me.By the time I round the corner, I see her already shoving my bedroom door open “Lyssandra,” I call out of her, but she completely ignores my existence,, and steps onto the room. The door slams shut behind her, and when I step inside, she’s already shrugging the robe off her shoulders, flinging it toward the chair without even looking. It misses and slides to the floor. For half a second, everything in me goes berserk. Her back is to me. Smooth, and bare. The line of her spine straight and unapologetic in its beauty. There are bruise marks on her fair skin that only exist because of last night. She looks unbothered by me, furious, and absolutely stunning. And I want to wring her neck for how much she makes me lose my damned mind. She didn't have to be so damned stubborn all the damned time, did she?I close the door behind me carefully, because slamming it would only give her ammunition.“Don’t,” I say.She turns, eyes flashing. “Don’t what?”“Leave,”

ERDENThe banging comes again, harder this time.It is not frantic anymore, but whoever is on the other side refuses to stop until the door opens or their strength gives out.I cross the room and pull it open, and Trent stumbles forward into the house. For a second, I think he might fall flat on his face. His weight pitches toward me, and I catch him by the arm, hauling him inside before he can collapse into the hallway. The door slams shut behind us with a sound that carries too far in the house.Blood coats the side of his head, dark and tacky near his hairline, fresh enough that it still shines under the light. One eye is already swelling, the skin around it angry and purple. His jacket hangs off one shoulder, torn straight through the seam.“Jesus Christ,” I mutter. He tries to straighten, pride kicking in before sense. His knee buckles instead and he pitches forward into me, almost knocking me to the ground. “I’m fine,” he grits out. “Stop staring like you've seen a ghost.” “

ERDENMy phone ringing the next morning drags drags me out of sleep like a blade across my skin.I'm jarred from sleep, though I hadn't seen realized I'd fallen asleep. I don’t move at first. My arm is tired where it’s draped over Lyssandra’s waist, her body curved into my side, her hair caught undee my chin. She breathes evenly, unaware of the sound vibrating against the nightstand. The phone keeps ringing so I grunt, and ease my arm free and reach for it before it wakes her properly. The name on the screen tightens something in my chest. It's Antonio finally, and damn it, I hope he has some goodnews for me, I fucking deserve some of it. I answer without speaking.“Your father asked for the guns,” Antonio says immediately. His voice is clipped, and tuned low. He must be somewhere he doesn't want to be heard. “Delivery. Today.”I sit up slowly, my back against the headboard, my eyes already searching the room like danger might be hiding in the corners. “Who did he send?”“I got a t

ERDENShe does not stop to consider my order. Almost against her will, Lyssandra takes my hand and comes to me, her movements almost jerky like her body still hasn’t caught up to her mind. I pull her onto the bed and she lands against my chest with a soft laugh that dies in her throat when my hands slide over her back. “You’re shaking,” I murmur into her hair. “So are you,” she says breathlessly. She’s right, I'm shaking. She's perfect, and she's running the show now. If only she understands how much control she rips away from me all by existing. I roll us so she’s under me and brace my weight on my arms, hovering just enough to look at her. Her eyes are blown wide, dark and glossy, her lips swollen from my kisses, and honestly, she looks wrecked already, and this in turn wrecks all my control. “Tell me to stop,” I say quietly. She laughs again, short and incredulous, and pulls me down by the neck. “You know I won’t. I never do, Erden. Just touch me like you'll die if you don't

ERDENI did not answer her question. The moment Lyssandra asked what was wrong, something inside me locked into place, sharp and urgent, and I stepped into her space before she could say another word. I took her face in my hands and crushed my mouth against hers, hard enough that her breath punched out of her chest. She froze for half a second. Then she kissed me back. Her fingers fisted into my shirt like she was anchoring herself, and the sound she made when our mouths met sent a jolt straight through me. It was not gentle. It was not slow. It was the kind of kiss that burned, that tasted like restraint snapping clean in half.My phone lay abandoned on the couch behind us.My father knew.Somehow, he had found out that I had spent time with her that afternoon. That I had stood beside her. That I had touched her again after all these years. I did not know how he knew yet, but I would find out. I always did.Still, I was not afraid. Not with her right here. Not with her body pressed i

LYSSANDRAErden says he wants me to spend the night with him as we’re driving back to my place. I dart a look at him. “That sounds suspicious. Should I be scared?”His lips curl into a wry smile. “You tease too much.”I smile, trying to mask the thrum of nervous excitement. “You were cold earlier. Now you want me to stay over, something changed.”“Nothing changed,” he says, but I can see the way his sce is suddenly tighter, and I think I know why, but I want him to say it. “That’s a lie.”His jaw tightens slightly. “Drop it, Lyssandra.”I do, but I am not convinced. Something is behind his coldness, something he isn’t saying. The drive is quiet after that. His face is calm, almost blank but there’s a tension in his shoulders, in the set of his jaw, in the way his fingers tap against the steering wheel. He’s thinking about something. We reach his house in silence. The gates slide open and the car rolls inside. He steps out and opens my door without a word. I follow him into the hous
