Chapter 4

Penulis: Belle Belle
Listening to Waylon's strained attempt to sound calm over the phone, I wanted nothing more than to reach through the line and tear him apart.

"I just couldn't reach Lucie on her phone. What's going on? Why isn't she picking up?"

"Um… Lucie's phone's dead."

"I see. You two are home now, right? Hand the phone to her. I've got something to tell her."

"Uh… actually, she isn't home right now. She went downstairs to get something."

While Waylon fumbled and scrambled for excuses, Dad rolled his eyes and handed the phone to me.

I took a deep breath and tried to keep my voice steady. "Waylon, what exactly did I go out to buy?"

The second Waylon heard my voice, panic set in. He tried to defend himself, saying, "Lucie, let me explain! I didn't mean for this to happen. Where are you? I'll come get you!"

"Come to my house. I'll be waiting," Dad commanded and hung up without waiting for a response.

When Waylon arrived at my parents' house with a dreadful look, Dad immediately smashed the teapot Waylon had gifted him when he first came to visit.

Back when he gave Dad the teapot, Dad was very fond of it. Now, the shards and scalding tea splattered near Waylon's feet.

Waylon was still dressed in the expensive down jacket I'd carefully picked out and bought for him with my own money. He was also lugging along the luggage I'd packed for our trip.

The sight made my blood boil.

"Do you know how cold it is outside right now? You left Lucie on the streets in this weather with nothing! You heartless piece of trash!" Dad roared, his face red with anger.

Terrified, Waylon dropped to his knees and blurted, "I didn't mean to! I was just upset with Lucie and wanted to scare her a little. I never thought it would turn out this way!"

I almost laughed at the absurdity of his excuse.

This hadn't been just a scare. He had gambled with my life.

"Hand over her phone now!" Dad barked.

Shaking, Waylon hurriedly pulled my phone out of his pocket and handed it over.

I snatched it from him without hesitation.

Mom wiped the tears of distress from her eyes and lashed out at Waylon. "If this is how you treat Lucie here in her hometown, I can't imagine what she's suffered in your home!"

Seeing that my parents weren't backing down, Waylon decided to drop the act altogether. He stood up and pointed at the down jacket he wore with a disdainful sneer.

"Suffer? Please, she's been living in comfort like a queen. She doesn't lift a finger when my mom asks her to do something. Honestly, we're the ones suffering!

"She's nothing but a spoiled brat who wastes money left and right. Look at this jacket she bought me—it cost thousands! Who's really the victim here?"

"Oh, you want to play the victim? Did you forget the time your mom forced me to take some weird soups for fertility? Or when she demanded I pay for your brother's house while refusing to chip in a cent herself?

"Every penny we spent on this trip came out of my pocket! Do you seriously think I care about the meager salary you bring home? Like hell I do!" I snapped.

I'd never thought Waylon would go this far right in front of my parents. Since he had no shame left, why should I bother holding back?

Waylon's face turned crimson as he raised his hand, ready to strike me. But before he could, a firm grip yanked him backward.

Uncle Mike stood there, flanked by my two towering cousins.

My elder cousin, Colton Lamont, glared at Waylon with a sullen look and bellowed, "What do you think you're doing to Lucie?"

The next second, a sickening crack rang out, followed by Waylon's blood-curdling scream.

"What a schemer!""The mother must be so angry with herself. She ruined both of her sons."…Since that day, I hadn't heard anything more about their family until I received a call from Delilah. The usually domineering Delilah was sobbing uncontrollably, begging me to remarry Waylon. From her, I learned that after Waylon discovered he'd been played, he beat Nigel so badly that he ended up in the hospital. Then he threw Fiona out of the hospital and chased them both back South. At first, Delilah still wanted Fiona and Waylon to get together, but Waylon made it clear that he was cutting ties with them for good.Delilah was terrified, but considering Fiona was carrying her grandson, she reluctantly agreed to let her and Nigel be together in the end.But before the child was even born, Fiona's true colors were revealed. At first, Fiona kept asking Nigel for money. It started with hundreds, then thousands, and eventually tens of thousands of dollars. Nigel began to suspect something

"Thanks," I said quietly, lowering my head.If Nigel found out it was me, the Wood family would definitely cause a scene at the hospital. Besides, now that I knew about Nigel and Fiona, they certainly wouldn't let me go.Jonas looked at me thoughtfully. "Be careful next time."After that, he turned and walked away. I stood there for a moment, watching his tall figure retreat, then slapped my cheek to snap myself back to reality.A man like him was far beyond someone like me.Now, I needed to take care of the Wood family's mess.Fiona was carrying Nigel's child, but Delilah would never allow a married woman to be with her precious son. So, Nigel had devised a plan to make the child appear to be Waylon's.He'd even manipulated Waylon into divorcing me and raising his child.I couldn't help but laugh wryly. I guessed it was time to meet with Waylon. When I saw him, Waylon exuded arrogance. The guilt he once had for me had shifted to cocky defiance, and he looked like a complete f

I frowned as I analyzed the timeline Kent provided.Fiona hadn't been back for long before she also got involved with Waylon. I couldn't help wondering if she was already pregnant, wouldn't marrying Nigel be a smoother path?At first, I thought the Wood family's antics no longer concerned me. However, they suddenly backtracked on the divorce agreement and demanded a 70-30 property split in their favor. They even claimed they wouldn't fear public backlash if I released the recorded video online, suggesting public opinion could swing in their favor. It didn't take a genius to figure out they needed the money for Nigel's new house.Waylon was a complete fool for funding his brother's house and even raising his child.I decided to keep digging. One day, I noticed a nurse I was friendly with was swamped with tasks, one of which was checking in on Fiona. Since I'd already seen Nigel visit her that morning, I volunteered to help.Inside Fiona's room, her voice was filled with sincerit

Before leaving, Delilah spat out one last threat. "Lucie, you'll pay for this!"The incident caused quite a stir, even trending briefly on Highland's local news.Initially, the Wood family resisted splitting the marital assets fairly. But I warned them that if they kept delaying, I would expose everything their family had done online. That wouldn't just make the Highland news—it could go nationwide. And if that happened, Waylon's job might not survive the fallout.Reluctantly, they agreed to a fair division of assets, and we moved forward with the divorce process.A few days later, I received news that I had passed the hospital interview. On my first day at work, I ran into Nigel in the hallway.Delilah and Waylon hadn't returned to their hometown yet, likely because Freya was here waiting to give birth. But why was Nigel still hanging around?Curious about his suspicious behavior, I decided to follow him. To my shock, Nigel entered Freya's hospital room.Did they know each ot

I quickly arranged a meeting with Waylon."Was it during your business trip earlier this year?" I got straight to the point. Though it was phrased as a question, my tone was firm and unwavering.Waylon turned pale as he watched the video I had recorded. Unable to lie any further, he confessed. But even as the truth came out, I struggled to process it.I had believed our marriage would be a lifelong partnership, filled with love and devotion. Never had I imagined that Waylon had been unfaithful and knocked his mistress up at that."But I didn't mean for it to happen. That night at the bar, I was drunk, and she just… showed up," Waylon stammered, his voice trailing off as if even he realized how ridiculous his excuse sounded.I scoffed, "That's your explanation? Forget it. Let's just get divorced and be done with it.""My family won't let you leave that easily.""You cheated on me and still expect me to walk away empty-handed? Keep dreaming."With that, I left a dumbfounded Waylo

I called the property management to have them evict Delilah and the rest. The security team was impressively efficient, and before long, they had all of them escorted out.Not long after, I had my lawyer draft the divorce papers and sent it to Waylon. Once the divorce was finalized, I planned to resign from my job and return to the Northeast for work.Since I majored in medicine, I reached out to an old friend working at a hospital to keep an eye out for job openings. Eventually, I got an interview opportunity. On the day of the interview, I was heading toward the elevator after finishing up. At that moment, I heard the elevator doors open and voices approaching."Freya, you're truly a blessing for our family. You've got to take good care of the baby. It's Waylon's first child and our family's first grandson!" exclaimed a familiar voice.I hid behind a wall and peeked out to see the trio—Delilah and Waylon walking with a pregnant woman, fussing over her like she was made of glass

As soon as Delilah saw me, her expression turned even more sour. When I didn't greet her, she remarked sarcastically, "Well, aren't you something? You and Waylon are still married. Have you already forgotten how to show some respect?""Some things are better settled sooner rather than later. It sa

Uncle Mike's family owned a martial arts academy, and both of my cousins had inherited the skills. With just a slight twist, Waylon's arm was dislocated."This is an assault! I'm going to sue you!" Waylon threatened despite the pain.I sneered and watched him writhe in agony on the floor. "Go ahea
