Chapter 3

Author: Unsweetened Coffee
Susanna's POV

Unable to fight back at all, I was dragged into the interrogation room.

The first lash of the whip sent black spots dancing across my vision. My mind drifted to the night Lorenzo had flown halfway across the country to rush back to me, all because I had a nightmare. For the next seven days, he had remained by my side to lull me to sleep.

As the second lash landed, I bit my lip so hard that the metallic taste of blood instantly filled my mouth. I could almost hear his gentle words back then, when he had been injured protecting me.

"I'll always protect you. I won't allow a single bit of harm to come to you. I'll take on all of your pain and suffering."

Then came the third lash, the fourth…

Every lash seemed to strike right into my soul, causing an agony a thousand times more painful than the sensation of my skin splitting open in bloody lines.

On the 19th lash, I vaguely heard Lorenzo calling my name, but by then, I couldn't tell if it was reality or just my imagination.

Unable to hold on any longer, I fell unconscious. But right before the darkness took me, I saw Lorenzo anxiously pulling me into his arms.

However, using the last bit of strength I could muster, I shoved him away as hard as I could.

"Lorenzo Gallo, in two days, you and I will have nothing to do with each other ever again!"

That was the last thought that swam through my mind before everything went dark.

When I woke up again, Lorenzo was sitting by my bed.

He didn't bring up my punishment, nor did he mention anything to do with Elena. However, I still heard from the housekeepers that he was preparing for his and Elena's wedding.

Nonetheless, he resumed his past gentle demeanor as he took good care of me. Every spoonful of hot oatmeal he fed me, he would blow on it to cool it first before carefully bringing it to my lips.

Whenever I moved at night, even when it was just the slightest twitch of my fingers, he would jolt awake in a panic and grip my hand. Only once he had confirmed that I was fine would he dare to shut his eyes again.

Besides that, every time the doctor came to give me an anti-inflammatory injection, Lorenzo would hold me in a tight embrace while gently covering my eyes with a hand. In a low, soft voice, he would murmur, "Don't look. It'll be over soon."

Yet, after I was discharged from the hospital, he immediately threw himself into the wedding preparations again.

To prevent me from causing trouble again, he confiscated my phone and had men stand guard outside to keep an eye on me 24/7. Despite the expansive villa, only one housekeeper had been left behind to look after me.

Regardless, I didn't protest. I simply packed my things quietly.

On the day of the wedding, my phone was returned to me. It was full of pictures Elena had sent me.

Among them was one of Lorenzo in a dashing suit as he tenderly slid the ring onto Elena's finger. Another photo showed the couple in a passionate embrace, kissing while the guests showered them with blessings and congratulations.

Every photo seemed to drive yet another dagger deep into my already battered heart.

At that moment, a call from an unfamiliar number lit up my phone screen. My hands trembled as I swiped to answer the call.

"Good day, Ms. Conti. I'm the person in charge of contacting you from Howardson University. Your boarding procedures have been completed, and the car to the airport is already waiting for you outside."

Silently switching off my phone, I then turned to grab my packed suitcase. As I stepped out of the villa, the sun shone down on me dazzlingly. It was a bright and sunny day.

Without looking back even once, I made my way toward the car waiting by the road.

"Lorenzo, let's not meet again for the rest of our lives. You go your way, and I'll go mine…"

Susanna's POVWith that, Giovanni left the room.I returned to my seat by the bed, staring at the journal in a daze. With every passing second, my head grew hazier. At last, after the doctor finished speaking, I couldn't hold on anymore. My eyes rolled into the back of my head as I fainted."Get a stretcher! She's fainted!"…When I woke up, a day had already passed.A nurse told me that Lorenzo's surgery had been successful and that he'd been moved to a regular room. However, he was in a coma from overexhaustion, extensive blood loss, and a preexisting condition flaring up. No one knew when—or if—he would wake.My heart sank at the news. • Another Bride Got My Promised Wedding   Chapter 8

Susanna's POVIt wasn't until two years later that I learned the Gallo family had gone through a major upheaval, and that Elena had died from a severe hemorrhage.Nonetheless, all that had nothing to do with me anymore. I had my own life to focus on.Pushing open the wooden door that led to the courtyard, I watered the plants, then relaxed on a lounge chair to take in the view. This was a welfare home hidden deep in a jungle. After graduating from university, I completed the secret medical research that should have taken me ten years in just two. After that, I came here to work as a doctor. I was certain nobody would expect me to be in such a place.I had barely returned to the break room when the sky suddenly darkened, unleashing a torrent of rain upon the world.Just then, someone pounded on the door. "Susanna, come out, quickly! Something's happened to one of the children!"I yanked the door open and dashed out into the rain."Who is it? Where did they go?"The weather h

Lorenzo's POVCrimson slowly spread across Elena's dress as her lower body began bleeding.Don Giovanni hurriedly got to his feet, eyes locked on Elena helplessly. He commanded in a shaky tone, "Where's the doctor? Get her to the bed, now! Move faster!"There was a flurry of activity before Elena was whisked away to the hospital.I remained in the same spot and coldly watched everything happen, not moving at all.Don Giovanni slapped me across the face. "That's your baby she's carrying! At the very least, go to the hospital for the sake of that child!"At first, I refused to go, but then I suddenly realized that if Elena lost the baby, I would continue to be held here against my will. I would, once again, be forced to have sex with Elena until she was pregnant with another son.The very thought of that utterly repulsed me, so I had no choice but to head to the hospital.I was about to open the door to her room when two voices reached my ears—Elena and her mother, Anna Ricci."

Lorenzo's POVWithin the span of one night, rumors were spreading across the entire city of Sirano about the joke that was the Gallo family's wedding. The ceremony was barely over, the guests not even having time to leave for the ball when the groom abandoned the bride and ran off, never to reappear. The next day, I insisted on kicking Elena out of my home. I smashed everything that I could get my hands on, leaving the house a mess. The countless shattered pieces were reminiscent of the state of my own broken heart.Don Giovanni was expressionless as usual, while a pregnant Elena stood beside him. Our daughter was crying as she hid behind Elena, not daring to make a sound.I pressed the knife I held against my wrist harder, the sharp blade biting into my skin."Move out of the way! I want to go look for Susanna! Otherwise, I'm dragging all of you down to hell with me!"I had read Susanna's letter countless times, yet I still refused to believe that she would choose to give up o

Lorenzo's POV"Someplace I'll never find?"A bubble of laughter left my lips, but it was filled with self-mockery. This situation was just too ridiculous!Susanna had promised that she would wait for me, so she'd definitely wait. She wasn't the sort of person who went back on her words! She clearly loved me deeply. After all, for my sake, she had conceded time and again, even agreeing to let me sleep with another woman to produce an heir. If she really had any intentions of leaving, she would've left the moment I gave in to Don Giovanni's demand and told her that I needed to sleep with Elena to have a son. She certainly wouldn't have chosen to stay by my side and wait for me all these years!"Why did you force her to leave?" I screamed at Don Giovanni, my fury echoing in the empty house. "I'd already agreed to all of your demands! I slept with Elena to produce an heir and gave her a wedding! Why did you still chase her away when I've already done what I promised?"Don Giovanni
