Amanda nearly dropped the hospital envelope when she read the result again, her fingers trembling with disbelief. After more than a year of disappointment, she whispered, “I’m finally pregnant.”

She pressed one hand over her stomach, tears filling her eyes as a helpless smile spread across her face. “Eric is going to be so happy,” she whispered. “He’s going to be thrilled.”

Amanda hurried toward the family house, clutching the result against her chest. She had married Eric, and they had spent the past year desperately trying for their first child.

She smiled as she imagined his reaction, remembering every failed test and every night they had promised each other that eventually their prayers would be answered. “We’re finally going to be parents,” she whispered.

Amanda pushed open the front door, calling softly for her husband. “Eric?” She waited, smiling expectantly, but the strange silence inside the house made her steps slow.

She followed the faint sounds toward their bedroom, her smile fading with every step. When she pushed the door open, her entire body went rigid.

Katie, Amanda’s younger stepsister, was lying on Amanda’s bed beneath the sheets beside Eric, Amanda’s husband. The sight stole every thought from Amanda’s mind.

Her fingers tightened around the hospital envelope as she stared at them. “Katie?” she whispered, her voice breaking. “Why are you in my bed with my husband?”

Eric climbed out of the bed without rushing, his expression irritated rather than ashamed. He avoided her eyes as though Amanda had interrupted something private. “You weren’t supposed to come home yet.”

Amanda stared at him, struggling to understand how casually he had spoken. “I’m your wife,” she whispered. “Why wouldn’t I be allowed to come home?”

Katie pulled the blanket higher, but there was no embarrassment in her expression. Amanda looked at her stepsister and felt years of trust collapsing. “How could you do this to me?”

Katie lowered her eyes briefly before answering in a quiet voice. “Amanda, please don’t make this worse than it already is.” Her calmness made Amanda’s hands shake harder.

Amanda looked at Eric again, waiting for him to apologize, explain, or even look ashamed. Instead, he folded his arms and said bitterly, “You want the truth? Fine. I started seeing Katie because you couldn’t give me a child.”

The words struck harder than Amanda expected. She stared at him, her lips trembling. “You cheated on me because I couldn’t get pregnant?”

Eric’s face remained cold as he answered, “We were married for a year without a child. How long did you expect me to wait?” His words made Amanda’s chest tighten.

Amanda laughed through her tears, unable to believe the cruelty coming from the man she had supported. “Wait?” she asked. “Who paid for everything while you were waiting?”

She stepped closer, anger finally pushing through her heartbreak. “Who paid the bills? Who paid for this house? Who kept this family comfortable when everyone else needed help?”

Eric looked away, but Amanda refused to stop. “I did,” she said, her voice shaking. “I was the one providing for you, my step mother Susan, and Katie while you were secretly betraying me.”

Eric turned toward her, his expression hardening. He looked at Ivy, Katie's nine months old baby and smirked “And for your information, Ivy isn’t Katie’s ex-boyfriend’s child.”

Amanda’s breath caught.

Eric pointed toward Katie, who remained silent beneath the sheets. “Ivy is my biological daughter. Katie gave me what I always wanted—a child of my own.”

Amanda stared at him in disbelief. “What did you just say?”

“Ivy is mine,” Eric repeated coldly. “Katie and I have known the truth from the beginning.”

Amanda’s hands began to tremble violently. She looked at Katie, her voice cracking. “You told me Ivy belonged to your ex-boyfriend.”

Katie lowered her gaze.

“You told me he ran away and refused to take responsibility,” Amanda continued, tears spilling down her cheeks. “I believed you. I supported you. I helped raise Ivy because I thought as my sister you needed my support.”

Eric’s expression remained unapologetic. “ Can you stop blabbing already? Katie here gave me the family I wanted. She gave me Ivy and that's what matters!”

Amanda pointed toward them both, her anger rising through her heartbreak. “I gave you everything, and this is how you repay me? I was the sole financial provider for this entire family. I paid for this house, your bills, Katie’s expenses, and Ivy’s needs. I sacrificed everything for you, and you betrayed me behind my back.”

Katie shifted uncomfortably. Amanda’s rage finally broke through. “You lying bitch!”

She lunged toward Katie, but Eric caught her wrist before she could reach her. He stepped between them, holding Amanda back while Katie recoiled behind him.

Amanda fought against his grip, sobbing as she screamed, “You told me Ivy belonged to your ex! You let me pay for your child while you were sleeping with my husband!”

Katie said nothing.

Amanda collapsed against the floor, covering her face as the truth crushed her. “I trusted you,” she cried. “I thought you were my family.. I gave you everything you ever needed and this is how you repay me?”

She opened the hospital envelope with shaking fingers and held the result against her chest. “I came home to tell you I was pregnant,” she sobbed toward Eric. “I came home because I thought my husband would finally be happy.”

Suddenly, the bedroom door opened. Susan, Amanda’s stepmother, appeared in the doorway and frowned at the shouting. “What is all this noise?”

Amanda turned toward her immediately, desperately searching her stepmother’s face for comfort. “Susan, Katie has been sleeping with Eric. My husband has been cheating on me with my own stepsister.”

Susan barely reacted. Her eyes moved from Eric to Katie, then back to Amanda. Instead of shock, she folded her arms and said, “And what exactly did you expect?”

Amanda stared at her, stunned by the response. “What did I expect?” she repeated. “I expected my family not to destroy my marriage behind my back.”

Susan’s expression hardened as she answered, “My daughter, Katie gave Eric what you couldn’t. She gave him a child. Tell me, Amanda, would any man patiently remain married for a year without a child?”

Amanda’s face crumpled as she whispered, “I was trying.” She pressed the pregnancy envelope against her chest. “I was trying so hard and now I am finally pregnant.” she smiled as tears dropped down her cheeks.

Eric stared at her pregnancy result, but there was no tenderness in his eyes. “It doesn’t matter anymore,” he said coldly. “I never loved you, Amanda. I married you because you were more financially stable than I am.”

Amanda looked up at him, devastated.

Eric continued without mercy. “Now Katie has given me what I always wanted. Ivy is my child. And even if you’re pregnant now, I don’t want you. I despise you.”

Outside, the sky suddenly darkened, and the sound of violent wind struck the windows. A news report blared from the television downstairs, warning residents to remain indoors because a dangerous storm was approaching.

Eric’s hatred finally boiled over. He stood up fast and shoved Amanda toward the door while she cried, then began throwing her belongings into the hallway. “Get out!” he shouted. “You have no place here anymore!”

Amanda struggled to fight back, clutching the pregnancy result against her chest. “Eric, please! I’m pregnant!”

Susan and Katie joined him. Susan seized Amanda from behind while Katie grabbed her arm, and together they forced her toward the entrance.

“Stop!” Amanda cried. “Please, you’re going to hurt the baby!”

No one listened.

Amanda fought them with every remaining ounce of strength. “Susan, please! I’m your daughter!”

Susan’s face remained cold as she pushed Amanda through the doorway. “This is no longer your home and I am not your mother!”

Katie shoved Amanda from behind, sending her stumbling onto the front steps. Eric followed them and threw the last of Amanda’s belongings outside before slamming the door and they shut the gate. A moment later, the lock clicked into place.

Amanda grabbed the bars immediately, tears streaming down her face as violent wind tore through the street. “Open it!” she screamed. “Please! Eric! Susan! Katie!”

People were running everywhere, desperately searching for shelter as the storm intensified. Amanda clung to the locked gate, watching debris fly through the streets. “Please, I’m begging you!”

Amanda remained outside, staring at the wood separating her from the people she had trusted most. She pulled her spare key from her bag and whispered, “No. They wouldn’t.”

She inserted the key into the lock and turned it. Nothing happened. She tried again, harder, her trembling hand slipping against the metal. “Open,” she whispered. “Please open.”

The key refused to turn. Amanda stared at it, slowly understanding. “You changed the locks,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “You actually changed the locks, threw me out so I couldn’t come back.”

Then she saw the water was coming with full force at the far end of the street.

Amanda stared in horror as the rushing flood grew larger and faster. “No,” she whispered, backing away from the gate. “No, no, no.”

The wave struck with terrifying force, sweeping Amanda off her feet and throwing her against a parked car. Pain exploded through her stomach.

She cried out and curled around herself as warmth spread beneath her clothes. Looking down, she saw blood. “No!” she screamed. “My baby!”

The water dragged Amanda across the flooded street while she desperately tried to swim. Amanda sobbed Eric’s name, reaching toward the distant house. “Eric! Please save me!”

But the locked gate remained between them.

The current carried Amanda closer toward the ocean bank. Weak from blood loss and pain, she struggled to keep her head above water until something moved beneath the dark surface.

Amanda froze.

She tried to swim away, but her strength was disappearing. Another shadow moved beneath her, drawn toward the blood surrounding her. “Please,” she whispered, fighting weakly.

The shark reached her.

Its jaws clamped onto her leg, and Amanda screamed as it dragged her beneath the water. She fought desperately, but the pain and blood loss left her almost powerless.

As darkness closed around her, memories returned in broken flashes: money given, sacrifices made, trust freely offered, and years spent building a life for people who had abandoned her.

Amanda remembered Eric, Susan and Katie.

She remembered everything she had given them and everything they had taken from her. She had given them money, trust, her home, her time, and years of her life and when she needed them most, none of them had come instead they discarded her like trash knowing she just got pregnant.

Amanda’s vision faded as the dark water closed over her head. Her final thought carried a bitterness stronger than her fear.

“If I ever get another chance,” she thought, “I will never give them anything again.”

Her consciousness disappeared beneath the dark water.

{Ding.}

A strange electronic sound appeared inside Amanda’s fading mind. Then a calm, emotionless voice spoke.

Amanda folded her arms, watching his expression tighten.“The construction team. They said reinforcement would be enough.”Raymond looked up, his gaze steady. “It won’t be, not if water carries debris at the speed you’re expecting.” Amanda felt a cold thread move through her stomach.“What do you suggest?” she asked, stepping closer to the foundation. Raymond rose, brushing dust from his hands before pointing toward the slope.“We raise this section, reinforce the lower walls, and redirect the drainage away from the main structure.” His tone stayed calm, but his certainty made Amanda listen.“You’re saying the elevation alone isn’t enough.”“I’m saying water doesn’t care how expensive your land is.” A

His expression had lost its earlier arrogance. “How much has she spent?”Katie gave a bitter laugh. “Enough to make me wonder what she's planning.”Susan tightened her fingers around her handbag. “Maybe she's trying to frighten us into begging her.”Katie's face twisted. “Then why is she building somewhere else?”Eric finally turned toward them, suspicion sharpening his voice. “That's what I want to know.”Katie leaned forward, lowering her voice as though sharing something dangerous. “We nee
