Chapter 7

Author: Sleepless Vigil
Evan was taken to the base's central square.

It used to be the supply distribution point. Now, there were long tables, drinks, boxed meals, and a giant LED screen. All the actors were gathered below it. The whole setup looked like a company year-end party.

The bodyguards forced Evan onto the stage. He clearly still wanted to hold on to the last bit of his dignity, but his face was swollen, and his tactical uniform was a wrinkled mess.

Dominic held a microphone. "Thank you all for your hard wo

A month later, I was at the beach when I got a message from Mona. She sent me a video. In the video, Evan was standing outside Sadler Group's building in a wrinkled suit. He was stopped at the entrance by security. He'd lost a lot of weight; his hair was a mess, and he was unshaven. There was nothing left of the high-spirited commander he used to be.He shouted at the camera, "I want to see Daphne Sadler! Tell her I know I was wrong!"The security guards didn't even bat an eye. One of them said, "Ms. Sadler isn't here.""Where is she?""I can't tell you."Evan suddenly dropped to his knees. People walking by all pulled out their phones to record him. He buried his face in his hands and started to cry. "Daph, I was wrong. Can you please come back? I really can't live without you."The video ended there.Mona also sent me a voice message. "Ms. Sadler, he comes every day, rain or shine. He's more punctual than the office staff."I texted back, "He must be a nuisance to security

The final payment will arrive in your accounts within ten minutes."The crowd exploded in cheers."Mr. Sadler's the best!""Long live Ms. Sadler!""Drinks are on the boss!"Dominic raised a hand to quiet them. He continued, "In addition, the Sadler family will be issuing extra compensation for the emotional distress Mr. Ziegler caused everyone during the project."The crowd got even louder. The look on Evan's face turned hideous. "Dominic, don't go too far."Dominic turned to look at

Evan still hadn't woken up. Or rather, he refused to wake up.Still on his knees, he suddenly crawled over, wanting to wrap his arms around my leg. "Daph, I was wrong."I took a step back, and he grabbed at nothing. The bodyguards grabbed him, holding him down by his shoulders.Evan started crying. Tears slid over the handprints and bruises on his face, making him look pitiful and pathetic all at once."I was confused. In an apocalypse like that, anyone would change. You can't just throw away our five years together because of one test," he pleaded.Five years. Coming from his mouth, the words made my stomach churn. He went on. "Think about how I used to treat you. I bought you breakfast, celebrated your birthdays, and gave you my coat in the winter."I looked at him. "So, you think one coat makes up for a life?"He spluttered. "No, that's not what I meant.""Then, what did you mean?""I mean that I love you!" Evan yelled, like if he just said it loud enough, it could drown o

Dominic didn't mention what scene two was, but Evan found out soon enough. The doors at the end of the hall swung open. Dominic walked in wearing a suit. Behind him were lawyers, bodyguards, the finance team, and two guys carrying cameras. The moment Evan saw Dominic, the look on his face became uglier than before. He growled, "Mr. Sadler."Dominic ignored him and came straight to me. He lifted his hand like he was about to ruffle my hair, then stopped halfway. "You've lost weight."My nose stung. "Oh, so you still remember I exist.""Sorry," he quickly said. "Mom wanted to come in person, but Dad stopped her. He said if she came, she would tear this underground base down brick by brick."I couldn't help asking, "Where is she now?""Watching the livestream."I went quiet, and so did Evan. The fact that Mom was watching the livestream meant that everything he'd done this entire month had been broadcast right in front of my parents.Dominic finally turned to look at Evan. He ask

Evan took a step back. Zoe reached out to steady him, but he shook her off. "You lied to me?"Her expression turned ugly. "Mr. Ziegler, I was just paid to act.""Act?" He looked like he'd just heard a joke. "So, when you said you loved me, that was acting, too?"She fell silent for a few seconds. Then, she said, "It was in the script."Someone in the crowd failed to hold it in and started laughing so hard their shoulders shook.Evan stared at Zoe, his eyes were locked on her face. "What about the hugs we shared and the tears you shed? When you said you left me back then because you had no choice, was that also part of the script?"She sighed. "Mr. Ziegler, I don't even know which university you went to."That remark hit home. All the color drained from Evan's face.I stood off to the side, watching. In the past, it tore me up whenever he gave me the cold shoulder. Now, looking at him like this, the situation only felt ridiculous to me.Dominic's voice echoed from the hall's PA

The car suddenly stopped. The lights in the carriage went out for three seconds. When they flicked back on, a broadcast echoed through the entire base."The doomsday survival experience project has ended. All actors, attention—your contracts have been fulfilled. Stop performing. Repeating, stop performing."I heard people cheering outside the car. At first, it was just a few voices. Very quickly, it became a roar. It was like people who had been holding their breath far too long finally getting to breathe. The man with the scar ripped the fake scar off his face. "It's a wrap! I never wanna see another protein bar again."The short-haired woman tossed her prop gun onto the seat. "I need a drink. A strong one."The doctor pulled out his phone. "Honey, I'm off work. Yeah, 30 days. Did the final payment come in?"I sat in the carriage without moving. My chest still felt tight. I knew the apocalypse had been fake, but the way Evan had just sent me to my death had been real.Someone y
