POV AMARA

“There are monsters that hunt in silence, and then there are those that simply treat you like a wrecking ball. The one that just landed on us was definitely the second kind.”

The Breaker’s massive fist comes crashing down like a piledriver, aimed straight for the armoured roof of our cabin.

There is no time to think. I slide back down through the hatch just one heartbeat before the ceiling caves inward with a deafening, bone-shaking crunch. Three inches of reinforced steel folds like tinfoil around a campfire, and the bulletproof windows shatter into thousands of glittering fragments that rain down across my shoulders.

“Amara, get clear of the vehicle now!” Nikolai’s voice booms from the driver’s seat.

He does not wait to see if I obey. With one brutal kick from his heavy combat boot, he shatters the driver’s door, rips it clean off its hinges, and launches himself out onto the smoking asphalt. I dive through the same opening, rolling hard across the pavement littered with broken glass and steaming oil, scrambling quickly to my feet.

Above us, the Breaker lets out a roar so deep and guttural it vibrates through my chest cavity and rattles my teeth.

The creature straightens up atop the crushed hood of our truck. Up close, it is even more grotesque than it first appeared. Thick, grey bony plates cover its chest and shoulders like some kind of organic body armour, and yellowish, bloodstained bone spurs jut out from every knuckle along its massive hands. It looks less like a living thing and more like a walking fortress of flesh and granite.

“Draw it to the left!” Nikolai commands, stepping calmly into the middle of the avenue.

The dark titanium plating covering his arms spreads outward with terrifying speed, climbing up his neck and forming half of his face into a sleek, battle-ready mask that looks almost alien. There is no hesitation in his stance. Something wild and primal burns in him now, a ferocity that matches the monster towering over us.

The Breaker leaps down from the wreckage, landing hard enough to crack the pavement beneath its feet, and charges forward in a straight line, shoulder lowered to crush everything in its path.

Nikolai does not take a single step backward. He shifts his weight firmly onto his right leg, plants his heel into the asphalt to anchor himself, and meets the full force of the impact head-on, crossing both plated arms to absorb the blow.

The collision sounds like two freight trains crashing together.

A circular shockwave sweeps down the street, shattering the windows of the buildings still standing nearby and shoving a line of abandoned cars backward several metres. Nikolai’s boots skid three metres across the road, leaving black scorch marks in their wake — but he does not go down.

His eyes, glowing with a fierce, deep crimson light, lock onto the mutant’s brutish, flattened face.

“Is that really the best you can do, you overgrown piece of garbage?” Nikolai growls, his dark veins pulsing visibly beneath his skin.

The Breaker bellows in rage and raises its other colossal arm, swinging it down to smash Nikolai’s ribs in. But Nikolai moves faster than it can strike — he catches that giant fist in mid-air with his own plated hand. Metal grinds against bone in a struggle so powerful the very ground trembles around us.

At the edge of my vision, the system flashes with electric urgency:

[Tactical Rapid Response Mission Activated]

[Objective: Eliminate Mutant ‘The Breaker’ within 90 seconds]

[Success Reward: Passive Skill ‘Blood Resonance’ Unlocked + Elemental Infusion: ‘Purifying Fire’]

[Failure Penalty: Nikolai Lanston’s Titanium Shield will collapse completely]

[Time Remaining: 78 seconds]

“Nikolai, hold it by the elbows!” I shout, drawing my ion dagger in one hand and raising my plasma pistol in the other.

He does not need me to say it twice. Through our tactical link, he understands my plan before the words even leave my mouth.

Nikolai throws his weight forward, wrapping his armoured limbs around the monster’s massive shoulders and locking both of its upper arms in a modified military hold, forcing the titan to arch backward, its chest exposed and vulnerable.

“Hurry, Amara!” he grits out through clenched teeth, the veins in his neck bulging against the dark plates. “This thing weighs five tons and hits harder than a tank!”

I aim the plasma pistol directly at the creature’s chest and fire three quick shots. Bolts of glowing blue energy slam into its bony breastplate, but they only leave black, scorched marks on the surface. Those thick, external ribs were built to deflect high-velocity rounds.

My tactical vision narrows, drawing a fine, golden line right past the obvious defences.

The core is not in its chest. It is not inside that solid bone skull either. It is hidden deep in the soft cavity behind its neck, just beneath the base of its skull — a pulpy, oozing fold of skin that is only exposed when the monster strains upward against Nikolai’s hold.

[Time Remaining: 35 seconds]

“Now,” I tell myself firmly.

I activate Shadow Step.

My body dissolves into a swirl of grey mist. The air compresses around me, and in the blink of an eye, I reappear — floating in the air, three metres directly above the Breaker’s broad back.

I land with both boots planted firmly on its armoured shoulders. The monster thrashes wildly, bucking like an enraged bull trying to throw me onto the pavement below, but I drive my knees against its bony plates and lock myself in place.

“Bring the high-frequency blade down,” a voice rings clearly inside my mind.

It is not the system. It is Nikolai, speaking directly to my thoughts, transmitted sharp and clear through the bond that connects us.

The ion dagger in my right hand hums with such intense vibration that its blade glows blinding white. I grip the hilt with both hands, align the tip with that soft, exposed fold behind the creature’s ear, and drive it downward with the full weight of my body behind it.

The blade slices through rubbery flesh and sinks ten inches deep, piercing straight into the cervical spine. It cuts clean through a pulsing, spherical core the size of an orange.

The Breaker freezes instantly. A high-pitched, almost ultrasonic shriek tears from its open maw, while bright, searing blue light begins to seep out through every crack in its bony armour.

“Jump clear!” Nikolai shouts.

Nikolai releases his grip and leaps backward. I push off hard with my heels against the monster’s back, launching myself into a forward somersault, tucking my shoulder to roll safely as I hit the ground.

The titanic body of the Breaker drops heavily to its knees, splitting open from the neck down to the waist in an internal explosion of superheated plasma that dissolves its organs instantly from the inside out. The mountain of flesh and bone pitches forward and crashes onto the asphalt, kicking up a cloud of black dust that slowly drifts away in the hot wind.

[Objective Complete: ‘The Breaker’ eliminated in 62 seconds]

[Reward Granted: Phase 2 Mutation Core — Absorbed]

[Skill Unlocked: ‘Blood Resonance’ — Telepathic sensory link active with Nikolai Lanston, range 50 metres]

[Skill Acquired: ‘Purifying Fire’ — Your edged weapons may now be imbued with energy flame that prevents infected regeneration]

I stand up slowly, my breath coming in short, hard gasps. Cold sweat clumps strands of hair against my forehead, but I feel a rush of renewed, warm energy coursing through every nerve ending in my body. I glance down at my right hand — a tiny, dancing flame of pale blue and white fire flickers above my knuckles for a heartbeat before fading gently into my skin.

Nikolai walks toward me with a steady stride. The dark plates covering the lower half of his face retract smoothly back into his neck, revealing his sharp jawline and eyes that study me with a look somewhere between disbelief and fierce respect.

“Pure energy fire?” he asks quietly, stopping less than half a metre away. “Every time I blink, you pull something impossible out of nowhere, Amara.”

“They are not tricks, Lanston,” I reply, sheathing the dagger at my waist with a cool smile. “It is called survival. Adapt faster than they do, or end up as a stain on the road.”

He glances back at our ruined truck, its engine block still smoking and hissing like something dying in the heat.

“We cannot drive this anymore,” he says, crossing his arms. “Front axle is snapped in two, and the engine block is half-melted through. We walk the last three kilometres to the mountain entrance.”

“We can take the shortcut across the skybridge,” I tell him, gesturing toward the glass-and-steel pedestrian walkway that arches high above the highway ahead. “It cuts straight to the North Shopping Centre complex. Saves us fighting our way through everything blocking the roundabout down below.”

Nikolai nods, checking the magazine of his rifle with practiced ease.

“The North Shopping Centre…” he murmurs, and a sharp, knowing grin curves his lips. “If I remember correctly, that is exactly where your beloved family’s fancy helicopter came crashing down.”

“Precisely,” I say, already starting up the ramp toward the bridge. “And it sounds like the party on the helipad up there is just getting started.”

“We survived the biggest thing on the highway only to walk straight into the most pathetic spectacle of the entire apocalypse.”

His pupils are blown so wide with terror that his irises are barely visible. The weapon hums with contained energy, the ozone and searing heat rising from it singeing the fine hairs along his jawline before I even begin to tighten my finger.“Wait… hold on, Amara…” he stammers, lifting both hands into the air, his fingers visibly trembling. “We can… we can work something out. It is a massive structure carved deep into solid rock, ringed by towering six-metre retaining walls and a primary hydraulic gate forged from solid military-grade alloy, three metres thick and nearly impenetrable. In the old world, this place was the Federation’s most closely guarded secret. Now, it stands as the only sanctuary strong enough to survive the total collapse of civilization itself. We pause behind a low barricade of sandbags, roughly one hundred metres from the wide access ramp leading upward to the main gate.
