Chapter 4

Author: Bitter Scholar
Heather turned away so she wouldn't have to look at me.

Nearby, Sarah urged the men, "Get to it already! Before Mr. Windsor comes home and sees her! You're gonna be Mrs. Windsor very soon, ma'am, so the last thing we want is this loose woman ruining your reputation!"

Hearing someone call her "Mrs. Windsor" instantly lifted Heather's mood. She smiled smugly again. "Take her as far away from me as possible. I want this to teach her who's boss!"

They dragged me toward the front door while I fought to dig my feet into the floor. My heels scraped across the hardwood.

Hugh tried to clamp a hand over my mouth, but I sank my teeth into the webbing between his thumb and index finger.

He screamed in pain and drove his knee into the side of my waist.

The impact slammed me into the doorframe, and the world went dark for a moment.

He crouched beside me and grabbed a fistful of my hair. "Bite me like a bitch again. I dare you! I could kill you right now, and no one would even give a fuck!"

Several unfamiliar motorcycles were parked outside my house. The gate to the courtyard stood half-open, leaving me in full view of the neighboring housekeepers. Several had already noticed the commotion, but none of them dared step in.

"Save your breath, Hugh," Heather said softly.

Hugh grabbed my chin and forced my face upward. "Who sent you? Who's your pimp? I'm gonna give them a call. They want their hoe back? They better have the money."

"Go to hell," I snarled.

I jerked my head aside just before his slap landed. His hand struck the doorframe instead.

His two friends laughed while recording me. "Oh shit, she's not like the other girls! She's so tough!"

"Hey, maybe she really is some rich man's daughter. That would explain the attitude!"

Hugh shoved the camera toward his own face. "Oh yeah? Would an heiress show up at a rich widower's home alone like that? Please. She's just an expensive prostitute!"

"You'll regret this," I growled.

He snorted. "Regret? I don't know her. I don't do that shit!"

He shoved my face toward the camera again. "Come on. Tell the world what you do for a living. Tell them you're up for sale, or I'll tear the clothes off your body and show the internet!"

Heather's eyes lit up. "Wait! Not so fast! We have to blackmail her sugar daddy or pimp into paying us first before we do that!"

Sarah nodded enthusiastically. "Brilliant idea, Miss DeVry! We need her to pay for your psychological injury first!"

I couldn't help laughing. "Excuse me?!"

Heather crouched beside me.

"I'll make sure you pay more than a hundred times over for that slap you gave me," she whispered sweetly. "So what if you're younger than me? It doesn't mean anything. Mr. Windsor is gonna be on my side, you hear me? Because whoever comes first wins. And I happen to look like the first."

"Take her out of your mouth!" I shot back. "You don't even deserve to mention her. Did you even know her name?"

She couldn't answer.

Heather knew her resemblance to my mother gave her an advantage, but that didn't mean she cared enough to learn her name.

Hugh yanked my hair impatiently. "Why are you wasting your time with her? Get her out of here already."

His friends each grabbed one of my shoulders.

"I want every one of her belongings thrown out!" Heather ordered.

Sarah rummaged through one of my suitcase's outer pockets. A framed photograph slipped out and crashed onto the floor.

I froze in horror. "Don't touch that!"

Sarah glanced at it and burst out laughing. "Oh my God, she even brought a fake family portrait!"

Heather quickly snatched up the photograph and examined it. I had been a little girl then, my arms wrapped around my mother's neck while she carried me. My father stood beside us with one hand resting on my shoulder, smiling warmly.

Heather's gaze lingered on my mother's face as her expression darkened. Without warning, she hurled the frame to the floor with all her strength.

"Fake!"

The shattering glass echoed her shriek.

"You've gone to a lot of trouble just to weasel your way into the Windsor family. You're disgusting!" she bellowed.

She ground the photograph beneath her shoe.

"Get your foot off my picture!" I screamed. My blood boiled with rage.

She didn't move. Instead, she pressed her heel down harder and deliberately ground it into the shattered frame. "Nope. What the fuck are you gonna do?"

I lunged and shoved her away.

She screamed as she stumbled backward.

Sarah rushed over and helped her to her feet.

"How dare you lay a hand on my sister!" Hugh seized my hair again and dragged me toward the front steps. "You just signed your own death warrant, bitch. No one's gonna save you now!"

He was about to drag me down the flight of steps when a voice thick with barely restrained fury thundered, "What the hell are you people doing?!"

That night, my father burned my mother's nightgown himself. The silence on his grim face seemed to dance with the flames.I didn't try to stop him. Some things were better lost than left forever defiled. The next day, property management posted a notice in the neighborhood group chat. Heather and Hugh DeVry, along with Sarah Sweeney, were permanently banned from entering the neighborhood.Videos of the chaos and confrontations they had caused also began circulating online after our neighbors uploaded the recordings they had taken themselves. There were few things Heather cared about more than her reputation. She had once exploited her resemblance to my mother to win sympathy from our neighbors, but now everyone knew she had gone to great lengths to reconstruct her face just so she could squat in someone else's home alongside her good-for-nothing brother. The employment agency also removed her from its priority list after the incident. One staff member who had worked with her clai

I felt my heart stop for a moment. That was the last gift my mother had given me before she died.Heather planted her foot on it. "Let Hugh go, then give me seventy-five grand... or I'll crush this under my heel."My father's voice rang out in alarm. "Don't you dare!""Oh, I dare!" she cackled, her whole body shaking with laughter. "What else do I have to lose? You care a fuck ton about your mommy, don't you? She's already gone, and all you have left is this stupid earring. How pathetic!"My father tried to rush forward to grab it, but I stopped him. "Oh, so you're after money?"She mistook my calm for surrender. "Yep. And I just decided the price went up. Make it 85 grand. I want it in cash, and whatever happened today stays here. No one says a word about any of this!"Hugh seemed convinced his sister had gained the upper hand. "Exactly! And pay off all my debt while you're at it! If you don't meet every single one of our generous requests, we'll expose everything about your fam

My eyes stayed fixed on Heather's face as my stomach churned. Photos of her undergoing plastic surgery? My father understood the implication instantly. His expression darkened even further.Hugh was sweating like a pig. "No! It's not what you people think!"I wasn't about to let him lie anymore. I took his phone and opened his conversation with Heather. As it turned out, she had sent him a photo she had secretly taken early on. It was a side-profile picture of my mother when she was younger.[I want to look like this. The closer the resemblance, the better.]Hugh: [Girl, the doctor said he could only make you... about 30% similar. Your face isn't gonna be able to handle too much change.]Heather replied with a voice message, which I played at full volume in the living room."That's good enough. If I resemble her too closely, it'll actually make me seem fake. I just need enough similarity to fool a poor widowed sucker like Henry. People like him will do anything to ease their re

The property manager grimaced. "Mr. Windsor, I can assure you that these people are permanently banned from entering this neighborhood."Heather stared at him in disbelief. "How dare you?! I live here!""Really?" I cut in, pulling up a PDF copy of the villa's deed from the cloud and holding it in front of her. "Take a good look. This villa belongs to me. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. You've been squatting here for days."The moment she saw my name, Aria Windsor, on the deed, her tears stopped. Her lips trembled. "How... But this house was supposed to be...""Her mother left this home to her," my father said as he stepped up behind me. "In truth, I'm little more than a glorified caretaker who looks after the villa while she's away."The crowd outside broke into murmurs, pointing and whispering among themselves.Sarah flushed with humiliation and looked as though she wanted the ground to open up and swallow her.Hugh, however, proved far less susceptible to shame. "S

My father ordered his driver to close the gate, and that was the moment Heather realized she had messed up."W-What are you trying to do?" she asked, trembling. He ignored her and instructed Sarah to bring out every single item Heather had taken before.Sarah's hands shook visibly as she carried out a stack of clothes and a jewelry box from the master bedroom. It was appalling. That woman had touched so many of my mother's belongings. Her scarf, her perfume, even her pearl earrings. The higher the pile grew, the paler my father became.I picked up one of the pearl earrings and noticed its bent hook. It hadn't looked like that before. My mother had left this pair for my 18th birthday."You wore these?!" I cried, staring at Heather. She bit her lip and refused to answer.Hugh, however, could not keep his mouth shut. "Wait, didn't you say you were gonna pawn those earrings after you had your fun wearing them?""Shut up!" she shrieked. My father rubbed his temple. "I want every o

Hugh froze mid-motion. Heather's face turned deathly pale. Then, in record time, she forced a few tears from her eyes, pretended to stumble, and rushed toward the door. "Mr. Windsor! You're finally home!"I looked up.My father stood outside the courtyard, his expression cold enough to chill the air.Heather tried to throw her arms around him, but he sidestepped her without a trace of emotion. She stumbled past him and nearly crashed face-first onto the walkway. She burst into even louder sobs."This woman barged into the house and said she's younger than me, so you must like her better! Then she hit me and tried to steal everything you've given me!" she wailed. "She was so violent that Hugh had no choice. He only did what he did to protect me!""Exactly what my sister said!" Hugh chimed in. "You wouldn't believe the things she was saying before you arrived. They weren't just offensive. They were downright insulting!"Sarah also began wiping at tears that weren't there."Mr. W
