The minute we got home, I rushed to my room and reached for the one handbag I always seemed to use.

I was a girl on a mission.

Nathaniel was upset. I was upset. The entire night had been one long, drawn-out mess of upsetting. But I hoped, scratch that, prayed, it didn’t have to end that way.

I flipped the bag over and dumped its contents onto my bed. A whole lot of junk spilled out: old lip gloss tubes I never got around to tossing, a half-empty packet of gum, a tiny bottle of perfume,

“Are you going to tell me where we’re heading now or…?”Nathaniel spared me a glance, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “Let me give you a clue.”I tilted my head. “I’m listening.”“The place is secluded.”My brows shot up. “Now I’m really convinced you’re going to kill me in the woods somewhere.”He chuckled. “If I was going to kill you, I wouldn’t have made you pack a weekend’s worth of clothes.”I huffed, crossing my arms. It wasn’t that I hated surprises, but Nathaniel had a way of being deliberately vague and I hated feeling this confused.Imagine my surprise when he stepped through the door from work earlier and the first thkng he asked me was if I was up for a weekend getaway.Of course I’d said yes, not thinking much of it. Next thing I knew, our suitcases were in the trunk and we were off.“Give me another clue.” I pressed. He tapped his fingers against the steering wheel, eyes fixed on the road. “The place is quiet.”I scoffed. “So you’re going to make it a quiet de

I fiddled with my hands on my lap, my fingers tapping against each other nervously. The silence inside the car felt heavier with each passing second.I wondered if I should just get out of my car, go into the building and check up on her myself. What was keeping her? Why was she taking so long? But I stayed put, my eyes darting to the window every now and then, scanning for any sign of her.Ten minutes later, I finally spotted a familiar figure approaching. Eleanor. She was moving quickly, her frame cloaked in a large floppy hat and oversized shades. She didn’t slow down until she reached the car, fumbling with the lock before sliding into the passenger seat beside me. She inhaled sharply, obviously out of breath.I arched a brow at her.“What?” she asked, her tone defensive.I gestured at her hat and shades. “What’s up with that?”“It’s a cover-up.” she shrugged, adjusting the brim of her hat. “I can’t risk anything.”“Right.” I drawled out as I started the engine. Her voice cut thro

"You need help getting out?" Hazel shook her head firmly, her little hands already reaching for the door handle. With a determined tug, she pushed it open and stepped out of the car on her own. I couldn’t help but smile at her determination. Daria had been quite adamant about Hazel walking on her own instead of being carried everywhere or relying too much on a wheelchair. At first, I worried it might be too much for her, but Hazel seemed perfectly content with the arrangement. Half the time she didn’t even look tired and if you hadn’t known her history, you’d never guess she once used a wheelchair. I stepped out after her, locking the car with a quick press of the key fob. The familiar jingle of my keys in my hand felt oddly comforting. It was good to have my car back. I'd only picked it up that morning before heading to the Sinclairs’ to collect Hazel. And I just hoped it wouldn’t give me any trouble again. We walked together toward the gate, Hazel slightly ahead of me. T

My face lit with a smile the moment I spotted the familiar figure waiting for us at the front steps as we pulled into the driveway and stepped out of the car.Daria’s face mirrored my excitement as she stepped forward, arms wide open. Her hug was warm and inviting. And I'd admit I did linger abit long but she didn’t seem to mind.“It’s good to see you, darling." she said, her grin wide. “And you're glowing, as usual.”Her attention shifted to Nathaniel who was approaching us with a smile of his own.“I haven’t seen you both since you ditched the birthday party I threw for you last week.” she teased.Nathaniel rubbed the back of his neck, chuckling. “Sorry we had to leave so early, Mum. But it was a wonderful party.”I nodded in agreement. “It really was.”“Well, I’m glad you at least enjoyed yourselves.” Daria replied, her smile softening as she led us inside to the dining area. A maid was bustling round the table, arranging cutlery and plates with precise movements. “Lunch will be

“Do you think she’s going to come?”I must have asked the same question ten times that day. My voice carried more nerves than I intended. Kaylor rolled her eyes so hard I thought they might get stuck.“You called her, didn’t you?” she asked flatly.I nodded, fiddling with my phone.“Then she’ll come.” she said. “Stop worrying.”Easier said than done. I let out a deep breath and unlocked my phone to check the time. 1:37 p.m. She was more than thirty minutes late. My stomach twisted. The waiter appeared again, hovering at our table with an xpectant look on his face. He had already asked once if we wanted to order and now he was back, clearly hoping we’d change our minds.I shook my head quickly. “I’m good.” Truth was, I didn’t think I could stomach anything right now. My nerves had tied themselves into knots.Kaylor sighed, flashing the waiter a smile. “What else do you have here apart from coffee?”He perked up. “We serve iced teas, milkshakes, smoothies—”“What kind of smoothies?” sh

I paddled to the door and pulled the handle open. Nathaniel stood there, sleeves rolled up, curls sticking out in every direction, a box of pizza balanced in his hands, green eyes fixed on me. “You okay?” he asked softly. I shrugged, opening the door wider to let him in. I didn’t bother answering. My mood spoke louder than words. The room was very warm, almost comforting. I had barely left my bed all day, only dragging myself out when I needed to pee. I wasn't up for having a productive day today. “Velma said you haven’t eaten today.” Nathaniel said as he sat down on the edge of my bed, setting the pizza box beside him. He flipped the cover open. A smirk tugged at my lips when I noticed the pineapple toppings on the thick slices. “I’m guessing you wouldn’t be joining me?” He chuckled, shaking his head. “Unless you want me to start having spasms on your bed.” I leaned forward, pressing a small kiss to his cheek, my own way of saying thank you. Then I turned my attention to
