Chapter 4

Penulis: Flora Rowan
Inside the darkness of the sack, Sheila felt as though she had been struck by lightning. Her eyes widened as Max brought the wooden club down on her again and again.

She bit down hard on her lip, forcing herself not to cry out. Tears streamed uncontrollably down her face.

So… the son she had loved with all her heart had known the truth all along.

His obedience, his sweetness, every bit of it had been an act.

He was only five years old. She had cherished him like he was the most precious treasure in the world.

Whenever he had a fever, she stayed awake the entire night, holding him in her arms and softly comforting him.

She had held his tiny hand as he learned to walk. She had taught him his first words.

Yet...

That little boy now hated her so much that he swung a wooden club with all his strength and beat her without mercy.

The world around her dissolved into a deafening roar. She could not hear anything anymore.

Darkness swallowed her once again.

When Sheila woke up, she was back at the Stewart residence. Joshua and Max were both gathered around her bed.

The moment she opened her eyes, their expressions were filled with worry and guilt.

"Sheila, you're awake. This is all my fault. I never should have left you alone with Max. That's why those kidnappers were able to take you.

"Don't worry, they've already been caught. I'll make sure every one of them goes to prison. They'll pay a hundred times over for what they did to you."

Max's eyes were red from crying. Holding a glass of warm water and her medicine with both hands, he carefully offered them to her.

"Mom, take your medicine. You'll feel better really soon.

"When I grow up, I'll protect you. I'll never let anyone hurt you again."

Sheila looked at the father and son. Together, they had put on a flawless performance.

The memory of the fists, the kicks, and the club striking her again and again flashed through her mind, yet her face remained completely expressionless. Only endless sorrow and despair filled her heart.

She said nothing.

Ever since Joshua had crippled her legs, and ever since she had learned the truth behind every lie, she no longer wanted to say a single word.

She only hoped the paperwork would be finished as soon as possible so that she could return to her parents, receive proper treatment for her legs, and leave this nightmare behind forever.

Joshua noticed nothing unusual. He simply assumed she was depressed because she could no longer walk. As such, he tried even harder to cheer her up.

During the day, Sheila could still force herself to play along. However, every night, the nightmares returned. She dreamed of the baby she had carried for ten long months, dreamed of the terrible bleeding as she fought to give birth, dreamed that before she even had the chance to hold her child… Joshua had wrapped his own hands around the baby's tiny neck and killed him.

For years, she had woken from the same nightmare with tears covering her face.

She had dreamed about that child countless times, yet in every dream, his little face remained blurred.

Of course it did. She had never seen him. How could she possibly know what he looked like?

She did not even know where Joshua had buried him.

Wanting to do at least one thing for her son, Sheila went to a church.

At the memorial candle stand, she lit a prayer candle and silently prayed that his soul would finally find peace.

Afterward, she wheeled to the altar. She clasped her hands together, lowered her head, and prayed in silence.

Just then, a familiar voice drifted in from the entrance.

Joshua.

Sheila's heart skipped a beat. When she looked up, she saw him carrying a small urn, with Cecilia and Max at his side.

The moment they entered the church, Cecilia spoke softly. "Joshua, are you really going to scatter the ashes of Sheila's baby just because I've been dreaming about him these past few days?

"He was your own son. Back then... you only..." She lowered her eyes guiltily. "It all happened because of me. If he hates me, I suppose he has every right to."

Max gently tugged on her sleeve, looking at her with complete affection. "Mom, you're too kind. He's already dead, yet he still keeps haunting your dreams. Dad's only doing this to protect you."

Joshua gave a quiet hum in agreement and gently stroked Cecilia's cheek. "Be good. As long as it helps you feel at peace, nothing else matters."

Then, without a trace of emotion, he opened the urn.

The way he looked at it, no one would have guessed it held the ashes of his own flesh and blood.

The next very second, he lifted the urn.

Without the slightest hesitation, he poured every last bit of his son's ashes into the rainwater drain outside the church.

  • Ashes Before Dawn   Chapter 29

Just before Joshua lost consciousness, he thought he saw Sheila's face flash before him.He blinked. However, the familiar face was already gone. He lay on the cold pavement, every bone in his body aching as though it had been shattered.Voices and sirens filled his ears. People seemed to be talking about him, about the miserable state he was in.He could not make out the words. All he knew was that his legs hurt so badly he could no longer feel them.Cold.He was so cold that his entire body trembled uncontrollably. However, no one offered him even the slightest warmth. So this was what it felt like to be hit by a vehicle. When Sheila had been struck by the car he hired, she must have felt even more hopeless than he did now. After all, she had been run over by a truck.Perhaps this was fate's long-overdue judgment. At last, he was paying the price for everything he had done.As the paramedics lifted him into the ambulance, another siren wailed nearby. He vaguely heard the nur

Seeing that he had finally gotten to the point, Yara sat back down instead of leaving."Tell me. What was the relationship between your late Mrs. Stewart and Ms. Zeller? And Max, whose child is he really? Is he Ms. Zeller's... or Mrs. Stewart's?"Joshua buried his face in his hands. His mind was in complete chaos.Tilting his head back, he drained his glass in one gulp. The alcohol loosened his tongue, and he finally began telling her everything."Yara... I'll tell you. I'll tell you everything."Just... please don't leave me."Yara looked into his drunken, unfocused eyes and gave a slight nod."All right. Go on."Hearing her promise, Joshua finally let down his guard and confessed to everything from beginning to end."I know I failed Sheila. Ever since she died, I've regretted it every single day."I kept wishing I'd have one more chance to make things right. However, fate never gave me that chance."A tear slowly rolled down his face."I never wanted Sheila to die. I just

Cassius's expression turned grim the moment he heard Cecilia's story. He turned toward the Stewart family, and the friendliness in his tone disappeared completely."In that case, perhaps you should settle your own family matters first. As for the Stewart family, I think the Scott family would be wise to keep our distance."Also, from this day forward, Mr. Stewart, please stop bothering my sister."With that, he took Yara's hand and stormed off.Joshua instinctively tried to pursue them, but Cecilia grabbed his arm.He was furious, yet with Thomas standing there, he could not openly lose his temper.Only after their car had disappeared into the distance did Cassius grin and tease Yara."Everything happened exactly the way you predicted. Cecilia really couldn't keep her cool. Now she's completely infuriated the Stewart family. I doubt things are going to end well for her."Yara remained calm, as if none of it had surprised her."Now all we have to do is watch them tear each othe

After leaving the Stewart mansion, Cecilia's face was filled with hatred. She had waited for so many years. She always believed that as long as she endured everything in silence, she would eventually marry into the Stewart family. She had finally gotten rid of Sheila, yet now another woman had appeared.Yara.The Scott family was one of the most powerful families around. There was no way the Stewart family would pass up a marriage alliance with them. If that happened, she would never have another chance. The thought made her even more anxious. She could not just sit back and wait.At this point, her only option was to make the situation impossible to ignore. As long as everyone knew Max was her son, she would still have a chance.Soon, an idea formed in her mind.Meanwhile, after spending more time together, Joshua and Yara's relationship progressed rapidly. He even brought Yara to the Stewart mansion to meet Thomas. At first, Thomas had been uneasy. The young woman looked fa

The moment those words left his mouth, Cecilia completely fell apart. She screamed and lunged at him like a woman driven mad."Joshua! You're heartless!"If I have nothing to do with you, then who gave birth to Max? Tell me!"Yara glanced back at the nearly hysterical woman, then spoke with practiced generosity. "Joshua, this lady doesn't seem to be in a good state. Why don't you take her home first? I can always call my brother to come pick me up."Her understanding only made Cecilia seem even more unreasonable. Joshua helped Yara to her feet and wrapped an arm around her before coldly addressing the people nearby."My bodyguards will handle things here. Don't worry about her."Without giving Cecilia another glance, he walked away with Yara.Behind them, Cecilia cried and screamed his name, but not once did Joshua look back.Resting lightly against his shoulder, Yara curled her lips into a faint smile. The pain she had once suffered was finally being tasted by Cecilia instead

The moment their eyes met, Cecilia stumbled back several steps in shock. Then she forced herself to calm down and demanded, "Are you... a person or a ghost?"Yara smiled as though she had no idea who Cecilia was."That's a funny question. Of course I'm a person."Judging by your reaction, I guess you've mistaken me for that Ms. Jenkins again."Honestly, now I'm curious. Just how much do I look like her?"She smiled politely and held out her hand."Hi, I'm Yara from the Scott Group. And you are?"The moment Cecilia heard her introduce herself, the fear on her face faded, replaced by icy hostility."Since you asked, I'll tell you. I'm Joshua's woman. I'm the mother of his child. Now you know who I am."Yara blinked in confusion."Huh? I thought Joshua's child was born to Ms. Jenkins. I'm... not sure I understand."Cecilia's expression darkened."I don't want to explain all that. I'm only here to warn you. Don't even think about coming between Joshua and me. Do you understand?
