Chapter 3

Penulis: Flora Rowan
A few days later, Joshua took Sheila and Max to a formal banquet.

The invitation had been addressed only to the president of the Stewart Group and his family. However, standing quietly in a corner, Sheila spotted Cecilia.

As Joshua's personal secretary, Cecilia accompanied him to all kinds of business events. Sheila had never questioned it.

On Cecilia's birthday, she had even bought a gift herself and asked Joshua to deliver it, thanking Cecilia for taking such good care of him over the years.

Looking back, Cecilia had always seemed so gentle and fragile.

Joshua had pitied her, and even Sheila had felt the same.

Now, thinking about it, she felt nothing but bitter irony.

Lost in thought, Sheila did not realize Joshua had already pushed her wheelchair over to Cecilia.

Their eyes met and, for a fleeting moment, it felt as though a thousand unspoken words passed between them. Then, just as quickly, the moment was gone.

Joshua entrusted Sheila to Cecilia before picking up a glass of wine and walking off to greet the other guests.

After he left, Cecilia treated Sheila with the same respectful attitude she always had.

"Ms. Jenkins, is there anything you'd like to eat? I can get it for you."

Just looking at Cecilia was enough to make Sheila's chest ache. She quietly shook her head.

She had not glared at Cecilia or spoken harshly, she had simply declined. However, Cecilia suddenly looked as though she had been deeply wronged. She bowed to Sheila, tears filling her eyes, before turning and walking away.

Sheila was still wondering why Cecilia had reacted that way when, the very next second, Cecilia seemed to trip and fall directly toward a towering decorative cake.

The sharp edge of the cake stand slammed into her forehead. Blood immediately poured down her face.

Gasps echoed throughout the ballroom.

Not far away, Joshua saw what had happened and instinctively rushed over. No matter how well he had hidden his feelings all those years, love could not be disguised forever. The moment he saw Cecilia injured, panic filled his eyes.

Without thinking, he shoved Sheila aside.

"Move!"

Sheila was already confined to a wheelchair. She had no chance of resisting the force of the push.

She was thrown straight out of the chair and crashed hard onto the marble floor.

The entire ballroom fell silent. No one could believe that Joshua, the man everyone claimed adored his wife beyond reason, had shoved Sheila so violently for the sake of his secretary.

Only after Sheila hit the ground, her blood slowly spreading across the floor until it reached the toes of his polished shoes, did Joshua suddenly come to his senses.

His face turned pale as he hurried over, gently lifted Sheila back into her wheelchair, and apologized in a panicked voice. "I'm sorry, Sheila. I didn't mean to. I wasn't paying attention.

"Ms. Zeller is hurt. I need to take her to the hospital first. You and Max can go home, okay?"

Before Sheila could answer, he turned around in a hurry, scooped Cecilia into his arms, and rushed out of the ballroom.

The guests gradually drifted away. Only Max stayed behind with Sheila.

"Mom, don't be sad, dad didn't do it on purpose. Ms. Zeller was hurt really badly, that's why he got so worried.

"I'll go home with you, okay?"

Sheila looked down at the little boy kneeling beside her wheelchair. Her heart was filled with sorrow and she could not find the strength to speak. Instead, she gently stroked his soft cheek in silent agreement.

The two of them got into the car together.

Halfway home, another vehicle suddenly swerved in front of them, forcing their driver to stop.

Sheila instinctively reached for Max, but before she could pull him into her arms, the car door was yanked open.

Several men rushed in. A burlap sack was thrown over her head, plunging her into darkness, and moments later, she felt herself lifted off the ground.

She had no idea where they were taking her. By the time everything finally fell silent, fists and kicks were already raining down on her from every direction.

"Ah..."

Curled up inside the sack, Sheila was overwhelmed with despair.

She had no idea whether Max was safe. As she worried about him, another question kept racing through her mind.

Why had she been kidnapped?

The beating continued without mercy until she could no longer hold on.

Then everything went black.

She had no idea how much time had passed before a trace of consciousness slowly returned. Just as she tried to move, familiar voices drifted into her ears.

"Mr. Stewart, Mrs. Stewart has been beaten too badly. She's been unconscious for hours.

"If this was to get revenge for Ms. Zeller, it's enough. If this goes on any longer, Mrs. Stewart could die."

So that was it. Joshua had arranged her kidnapping, all because Cecilia had staged that fall at the banquet. He had done it to avenge her.

A sharp pain pierced Sheila's heart.

Before she even had time to grieve, she heard Max's angry voice.

"It's not enough!

"She hurt my mommy! I want her to pay a terrible price for what she did!"

The obedient little boy she had raised lifted a wooden club high into the air. Then, with all his strength, he brought it crashing down onto Sheila's back.

Just before Joshua lost consciousness, he thought he saw Sheila's face flash before him.He blinked. However, the familiar face was already gone. He lay on the cold pavement, every bone in his body aching as though it had been shattered.Voices and sirens filled his ears. People seemed to be talking about him, about the miserable state he was in.He could not make out the words. All he knew was that his legs hurt so badly he could no longer feel them.Cold.He was so cold that his entire body trembled uncontrollably. However, no one offered him even the slightest warmth. So this was what it felt like to be hit by a vehicle. When Sheila had been struck by the car he hired, she must have felt even more hopeless than he did now. After all, she had been run over by a truck.Perhaps this was fate's long-overdue judgment. At last, he was paying the price for everything he had done.As the paramedics lifted him into the ambulance, another siren wailed nearby. He vaguely heard the nur

Seeing that he had finally gotten to the point, Yara sat back down instead of leaving."Tell me. What was the relationship between your late Mrs. Stewart and Ms. Zeller? And Max, whose child is he really? Is he Ms. Zeller's... or Mrs. Stewart's?"Joshua buried his face in his hands. His mind was in complete chaos.Tilting his head back, he drained his glass in one gulp. The alcohol loosened his tongue, and he finally began telling her everything."Yara... I'll tell you. I'll tell you everything."Just... please don't leave me."Yara looked into his drunken, unfocused eyes and gave a slight nod."All right. Go on."Hearing her promise, Joshua finally let down his guard and confessed to everything from beginning to end."I know I failed Sheila. Ever since she died, I've regretted it every single day."I kept wishing I'd have one more chance to make things right. However, fate never gave me that chance."A tear slowly rolled down his face."I never wanted Sheila to die. I just

Cassius's expression turned grim the moment he heard Cecilia's story. He turned toward the Stewart family, and the friendliness in his tone disappeared completely."In that case, perhaps you should settle your own family matters first. As for the Stewart family, I think the Scott family would be wise to keep our distance."Also, from this day forward, Mr. Stewart, please stop bothering my sister."With that, he took Yara's hand and stormed off.Joshua instinctively tried to pursue them, but Cecilia grabbed his arm.He was furious, yet with Thomas standing there, he could not openly lose his temper.Only after their car had disappeared into the distance did Cassius grin and tease Yara."Everything happened exactly the way you predicted. Cecilia really couldn't keep her cool. Now she's completely infuriated the Stewart family. I doubt things are going to end well for her."Yara remained calm, as if none of it had surprised her."Now all we have to do is watch them tear each othe

After leaving the Stewart mansion, Cecilia's face was filled with hatred. She had waited for so many years. She always believed that as long as she endured everything in silence, she would eventually marry into the Stewart family. She had finally gotten rid of Sheila, yet now another woman had appeared.Yara.The Scott family was one of the most powerful families around. There was no way the Stewart family would pass up a marriage alliance with them. If that happened, she would never have another chance. The thought made her even more anxious. She could not just sit back and wait.At this point, her only option was to make the situation impossible to ignore. As long as everyone knew Max was her son, she would still have a chance.Soon, an idea formed in her mind.Meanwhile, after spending more time together, Joshua and Yara's relationship progressed rapidly. He even brought Yara to the Stewart mansion to meet Thomas. At first, Thomas had been uneasy. The young woman looked fa

The moment those words left his mouth, Cecilia completely fell apart. She screamed and lunged at him like a woman driven mad."Joshua! You're heartless!"If I have nothing to do with you, then who gave birth to Max? Tell me!"Yara glanced back at the nearly hysterical woman, then spoke with practiced generosity. "Joshua, this lady doesn't seem to be in a good state. Why don't you take her home first? I can always call my brother to come pick me up."Her understanding only made Cecilia seem even more unreasonable. Joshua helped Yara to her feet and wrapped an arm around her before coldly addressing the people nearby."My bodyguards will handle things here. Don't worry about her."Without giving Cecilia another glance, he walked away with Yara.Behind them, Cecilia cried and screamed his name, but not once did Joshua look back.Resting lightly against his shoulder, Yara curled her lips into a faint smile. The pain she had once suffered was finally being tasted by Cecilia instead

The moment their eyes met, Cecilia stumbled back several steps in shock. Then she forced herself to calm down and demanded, "Are you... a person or a ghost?"Yara smiled as though she had no idea who Cecilia was."That's a funny question. Of course I'm a person."Judging by your reaction, I guess you've mistaken me for that Ms. Jenkins again."Honestly, now I'm curious. Just how much do I look like her?"She smiled politely and held out her hand."Hi, I'm Yara from the Scott Group. And you are?"The moment Cecilia heard her introduce herself, the fear on her face faded, replaced by icy hostility."Since you asked, I'll tell you. I'm Joshua's woman. I'm the mother of his child. Now you know who I am."Yara blinked in confusion."Huh? I thought Joshua's child was born to Ms. Jenkins. I'm... not sure I understand."Cecilia's expression darkened."I don't want to explain all that. I'm only here to warn you. Don't even think about coming between Joshua and me. Do you understand?
