Chapter 6

Penulis: Flora Rowan
The birthday banquet was held at the most luxurious hotel in the city, and every detail reflected extravagant luxury. The backdrop was adorned with tens of thousands of roses, while countless gift boxes were stacked throughout the ballroom. Even the gown Joshua had prepared for Sheila was embellished with priceless crystal stones that shimmered beneath the lights.

The guests could not stop admiring the spectacle.

"They say wealthy families rarely produce devoted husbands, but just look at Mr. Stewart."

"The way he spoils Mrs. Stewart is enough to make anyone jealous."

"Exactly. They grew up together, they're a perfect match, and they've been in love for years.

You couldn't find a more perfect couple."

Some guests even walked over to flatter Sheila in person.

"Mrs. Stewart, you're so lucky. Mr. Stewart loves you with all his heart. We're all so jealous."

She turned toward the speaker. Her eyes were slightly red, and she smiled.

However, the smile never reached her eyes.

"Yes. A sincere heart is incredibly precious.

"That's why anyone who betrays a sincere heart never ends well."

Her expression was so serious that the nearby guests froze for a moment.

Joshua and Max stiffened as well. The two exchanged uneasy glances, almost wondering whether she had somehow discovered the truth.

Soon it was time to blow out the birthday candles.

Everyone gathered around Sheila, singing "Happy Birthday" and eagerly urging her to make a wish.

Joshua gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear before kneeling beside her.

"Go ahead, Sheila. Make your wish."

Looking at the hopeful faces surrounding her, Sheila folded her hands and slowly closed her eyes.

"My first wish… I hope my legs recover as soon as possible.

"My second wish… I hope the rest of my life will be filled with freedom and happiness.

"My third wish… I hope the people I never want to see again will disappear from my world forever."

Thunderous applause filled the ballroom.

To everyone else, her wishes seemed unremarkable. Only Joshua and Max understood their meaning, and the smiles on their faces faltered.

For the first time ever, not a single one of Sheila's birthday wishes was about them.

Every previous year, she had wished for Joshua's health and for Max to grow up safe and happy.

This was the first birthday when every wish was only for herself.

Sensing that something was wrong, the father and son hurried to explain themselves.

"Sheila, what's wrong? Are you upset because I haven't been spending enough time with you lately? The company has a very important project right now. I've been so busy with work that I've neglected you.

"However, once this is over, I'll stay by your side, okay?"

Max quickly joined in. "Mom, I just started kindergarten. I've had so much homework so I couldn't spend time with you.

"Please don't be mad at Dad and me, okay?"

She looked down at the father and son. Their eyes shifted uneasily beneath her gaze.

She said nothing.

Busy.

Yes, they had been busy these past few days, preparing for Joshua and Cecilia's wedding.

At that moment, Cecilia finally arrived. She walked over with a gift in her hands and offered it to Sheila.

"Ms. Jenkins, I'm so sorry I'm late. I've been busy planning my wedding with my boyfriend these past few days. I hope you won't hold it against me."

Sheila looked at her calmly. "Ms. Zeller, since when did you have a boyfriend? I've never heard you mention him."

A faint blush appeared on Cecilia's cheeks. "We've been together for many years. We just never made our relationship public."

Sheila's fingers slowly tightened around the armrest of her wheelchair. After a long pause, she simply nodded.

"Congratulations. When's the wedding?"

Cecilia smiled brightly. "One week from now."

Before Sheila could say another word, Joshua stepped in and interrupted the conversation.

"The fireworks are about to start.

"Sheila, how about I take you outside to watch them?"

Just before Joshua lost consciousness, he thought he saw Sheila's face flash before him.He blinked. However, the familiar face was already gone. He lay on the cold pavement, every bone in his body aching as though it had been shattered.Voices and sirens filled his ears. People seemed to be talking about him, about the miserable state he was in.He could not make out the words. All he knew was that his legs hurt so badly he could no longer feel them.Cold.He was so cold that his entire body trembled uncontrollably. However, no one offered him even the slightest warmth. So this was what it felt like to be hit by a vehicle. When Sheila had been struck by the car he hired, she must have felt even more hopeless than he did now. After all, she had been run over by a truck.Perhaps this was fate's long-overdue judgment. At last, he was paying the price for everything he had done.As the paramedics lifted him into the ambulance, another siren wailed nearby. He vaguely heard the nur

Seeing that he had finally gotten to the point, Yara sat back down instead of leaving."Tell me. What was the relationship between your late Mrs. Stewart and Ms. Zeller? And Max, whose child is he really? Is he Ms. Zeller's... or Mrs. Stewart's?"Joshua buried his face in his hands. His mind was in complete chaos.Tilting his head back, he drained his glass in one gulp. The alcohol loosened his tongue, and he finally began telling her everything."Yara... I'll tell you. I'll tell you everything."Just... please don't leave me."Yara looked into his drunken, unfocused eyes and gave a slight nod."All right. Go on."Hearing her promise, Joshua finally let down his guard and confessed to everything from beginning to end."I know I failed Sheila. Ever since she died, I've regretted it every single day."I kept wishing I'd have one more chance to make things right. However, fate never gave me that chance."A tear slowly rolled down his face."I never wanted Sheila to die. I just

Cassius's expression turned grim the moment he heard Cecilia's story. He turned toward the Stewart family, and the friendliness in his tone disappeared completely."In that case, perhaps you should settle your own family matters first. As for the Stewart family, I think the Scott family would be wise to keep our distance."Also, from this day forward, Mr. Stewart, please stop bothering my sister."With that, he took Yara's hand and stormed off.Joshua instinctively tried to pursue them, but Cecilia grabbed his arm.He was furious, yet with Thomas standing there, he could not openly lose his temper.Only after their car had disappeared into the distance did Cassius grin and tease Yara."Everything happened exactly the way you predicted. Cecilia really couldn't keep her cool. Now she's completely infuriated the Stewart family. I doubt things are going to end well for her."Yara remained calm, as if none of it had surprised her."Now all we have to do is watch them tear each othe

After leaving the Stewart mansion, Cecilia's face was filled with hatred. She had waited for so many years. She always believed that as long as she endured everything in silence, she would eventually marry into the Stewart family. She had finally gotten rid of Sheila, yet now another woman had appeared.Yara.The Scott family was one of the most powerful families around. There was no way the Stewart family would pass up a marriage alliance with them. If that happened, she would never have another chance. The thought made her even more anxious. She could not just sit back and wait.At this point, her only option was to make the situation impossible to ignore. As long as everyone knew Max was her son, she would still have a chance.Soon, an idea formed in her mind.Meanwhile, after spending more time together, Joshua and Yara's relationship progressed rapidly. He even brought Yara to the Stewart mansion to meet Thomas. At first, Thomas had been uneasy. The young woman looked fa

The moment those words left his mouth, Cecilia completely fell apart. She screamed and lunged at him like a woman driven mad."Joshua! You're heartless!"If I have nothing to do with you, then who gave birth to Max? Tell me!"Yara glanced back at the nearly hysterical woman, then spoke with practiced generosity. "Joshua, this lady doesn't seem to be in a good state. Why don't you take her home first? I can always call my brother to come pick me up."Her understanding only made Cecilia seem even more unreasonable. Joshua helped Yara to her feet and wrapped an arm around her before coldly addressing the people nearby."My bodyguards will handle things here. Don't worry about her."Without giving Cecilia another glance, he walked away with Yara.Behind them, Cecilia cried and screamed his name, but not once did Joshua look back.Resting lightly against his shoulder, Yara curled her lips into a faint smile. The pain she had once suffered was finally being tasted by Cecilia instead

The moment their eyes met, Cecilia stumbled back several steps in shock. Then she forced herself to calm down and demanded, "Are you... a person or a ghost?"Yara smiled as though she had no idea who Cecilia was."That's a funny question. Of course I'm a person."Judging by your reaction, I guess you've mistaken me for that Ms. Jenkins again."Honestly, now I'm curious. Just how much do I look like her?"She smiled politely and held out her hand."Hi, I'm Yara from the Scott Group. And you are?"The moment Cecilia heard her introduce herself, the fear on her face faded, replaced by icy hostility."Since you asked, I'll tell you. I'm Joshua's woman. I'm the mother of his child. Now you know who I am."Yara blinked in confusion."Huh? I thought Joshua's child was born to Ms. Jenkins. I'm... not sure I understand."Cecilia's expression darkened."I don't want to explain all that. I'm only here to warn you. Don't even think about coming between Joshua and me. Do you understand?
