Chapter 7

Penulis: Flora Rowan
There was a saying that if two people in love kissed beneath the fireworks at midnight, they would stay together forever.

As such, long before midnight arrived, most of the couples at the banquet had already found a spot to watch the fireworks.

After Joshua wheeled Sheila outside, there were only a few minutes left before midnight.

Then, all at once, he was gone.

Sheila slowly pushed her wheelchair through the crowd, searching for him.

Just as she had expected, in the hotel's garden, she found Joshua kissing Cecilia.

The fireworks burst across the night sky, dazzling and brilliant, bathing the two of them in shimmering light.

Standing beside them, Max looked up with a face full of happiness. The three of them looked like a warm, loving family.

Sheila remained quietly in the shadows, watching from a distance. It was as though her heart had already been corroded beyond repair. She did not even feel pain anymore.

After returning home, Sheila washed up and went to bed early.

Joshua had drunk quite a bit at the banquet and fell asleep even faster than she did.

In the middle of the night, his phone began ringing over and over.

Seeing no sign that he was about to wake up, Sheila struggled to sit upright and answered the call.

It was Joshua's assistant.

Before she could even speak, he hurriedly reported the situation.

"Mr. Stewart, something terrible has happened. Ms. Zeller was in a car accident.

"I had someone investigate it. It was arranged by your parents.

"They found out you're still involved with Ms. Zeller, so they sent people after her. Right now she's..."

Before he could finish, Joshua suddenly woke up. He snatched the phone from Sheila's hand.

Holding it to his ear, he listened in silence. With every passing second, his expression grew darker, like storm clouds gathering before a violent downpour.

A moment later, he ended the call. Even though anxiety was written all over his face, he forced himself to appear calm as he turned to Sheila.

"It's late. Go back to sleep. I have something I need to take care of.

"Get some rest and don't wait for me."

He left that night and never came home. Max disappeared with him as well.

Sheila knew exactly where they had gone. Cecilia had been injured in a car accident and the two of them must have been frantic and stayed at the hospital to take care of her.

She no longer cared. Her paperwork would be finished soon.

She assumed they would stay at the hospital for several days. To her surprise, both Joshua and Max returned home the very next evening. They acted as though nothing had happened.

Joshua fussed over her as usual. He even insisted on cooking dinner himself.

Max stayed glued to her side the entire time, carefully massaging her legs.

"Mom, if I massage your legs every day, they'll heal faster, right?"

Questions filled Sheila's mind, but she could not ask them outright.

Suppressing her emotions, she casually said, "I heard Ms. Zeller was in a car accident. Is she okay?"

Joshua, who had just brought another dish to the table, froze for a split second.

"Sheila... how did you know she was in a car accident?”

“I overheard part of your phone call last night. I didn't hear everything. I only caught that she'd been in an accident."

Joshua visibly relaxed. "I didn't tell you because I didn't want you worrying.

"Her injuries are pretty serious. The doctors said she has multiple fractures and will have to stay in bed for a while.

"However, don't worry about her. I've already arranged for people from the company to take care of her."

Listening to him, a strange feeling of unease crept into Sheila's heart.

Joshua loved Cecilia more than anyone.

If she had really been that badly injured, he should have stayed by her bedside all day and night.

Why would he suddenly come home just to shower Sheila with attention?

After dinner, that uneasy feeling only grew stronger.

She could not shake the sense that something was terribly wrong.

However, Joshua said nothing.

That night before bed, he walked over carrying a mug of honey water and sat beside her.

"Sheila, you haven't been sleeping well lately. I made you some honey water. It'll help you sleep.

"Drink it."

She looked at the mug, instinctively unwilling to touch it. She tried to refuse again and again, but Joshua was much stronger than she was.

Half coaxing and half forcing, he lifted the mug to her lips.

"Be good. Drink it. You'll sleep much better."

She had no strength to resist. In the end, she drank every last drop.

Not long afterward, dizziness washed over her. The room began to spin and, before she knew it, everything faded into darkness.

Just before Joshua lost consciousness, he thought he saw Sheila's face flash before him.He blinked. However, the familiar face was already gone. He lay on the cold pavement, every bone in his body aching as though it had been shattered.Voices and sirens filled his ears. People seemed to be talking about him, about the miserable state he was in.He could not make out the words. All he knew was that his legs hurt so badly he could no longer feel them.Cold.He was so cold that his entire body trembled uncontrollably. However, no one offered him even the slightest warmth. So this was what it felt like to be hit by a vehicle. When Sheila had been struck by the car he hired, she must have felt even more hopeless than he did now. After all, she had been run over by a truck.Perhaps this was fate's long-overdue judgment. At last, he was paying the price for everything he had done.As the paramedics lifted him into the ambulance, another siren wailed nearby. He vaguely heard the nur

Seeing that he had finally gotten to the point, Yara sat back down instead of leaving."Tell me. What was the relationship between your late Mrs. Stewart and Ms. Zeller? And Max, whose child is he really? Is he Ms. Zeller's... or Mrs. Stewart's?"Joshua buried his face in his hands. His mind was in complete chaos.Tilting his head back, he drained his glass in one gulp. The alcohol loosened his tongue, and he finally began telling her everything."Yara... I'll tell you. I'll tell you everything."Just... please don't leave me."Yara looked into his drunken, unfocused eyes and gave a slight nod."All right. Go on."Hearing her promise, Joshua finally let down his guard and confessed to everything from beginning to end."I know I failed Sheila. Ever since she died, I've regretted it every single day."I kept wishing I'd have one more chance to make things right. However, fate never gave me that chance."A tear slowly rolled down his face."I never wanted Sheila to die. I just

Cassius's expression turned grim the moment he heard Cecilia's story. He turned toward the Stewart family, and the friendliness in his tone disappeared completely."In that case, perhaps you should settle your own family matters first. As for the Stewart family, I think the Scott family would be wise to keep our distance."Also, from this day forward, Mr. Stewart, please stop bothering my sister."With that, he took Yara's hand and stormed off.Joshua instinctively tried to pursue them, but Cecilia grabbed his arm.He was furious, yet with Thomas standing there, he could not openly lose his temper.Only after their car had disappeared into the distance did Cassius grin and tease Yara."Everything happened exactly the way you predicted. Cecilia really couldn't keep her cool. Now she's completely infuriated the Stewart family. I doubt things are going to end well for her."Yara remained calm, as if none of it had surprised her."Now all we have to do is watch them tear each othe

After leaving the Stewart mansion, Cecilia's face was filled with hatred. She had waited for so many years. She always believed that as long as she endured everything in silence, she would eventually marry into the Stewart family. She had finally gotten rid of Sheila, yet now another woman had appeared.Yara.The Scott family was one of the most powerful families around. There was no way the Stewart family would pass up a marriage alliance with them. If that happened, she would never have another chance. The thought made her even more anxious. She could not just sit back and wait.At this point, her only option was to make the situation impossible to ignore. As long as everyone knew Max was her son, she would still have a chance.Soon, an idea formed in her mind.Meanwhile, after spending more time together, Joshua and Yara's relationship progressed rapidly. He even brought Yara to the Stewart mansion to meet Thomas. At first, Thomas had been uneasy. The young woman looked fa

The moment those words left his mouth, Cecilia completely fell apart. She screamed and lunged at him like a woman driven mad."Joshua! You're heartless!"If I have nothing to do with you, then who gave birth to Max? Tell me!"Yara glanced back at the nearly hysterical woman, then spoke with practiced generosity. "Joshua, this lady doesn't seem to be in a good state. Why don't you take her home first? I can always call my brother to come pick me up."Her understanding only made Cecilia seem even more unreasonable. Joshua helped Yara to her feet and wrapped an arm around her before coldly addressing the people nearby."My bodyguards will handle things here. Don't worry about her."Without giving Cecilia another glance, he walked away with Yara.Behind them, Cecilia cried and screamed his name, but not once did Joshua look back.Resting lightly against his shoulder, Yara curled her lips into a faint smile. The pain she had once suffered was finally being tasted by Cecilia instead

The moment their eyes met, Cecilia stumbled back several steps in shock. Then she forced herself to calm down and demanded, "Are you... a person or a ghost?"Yara smiled as though she had no idea who Cecilia was."That's a funny question. Of course I'm a person."Judging by your reaction, I guess you've mistaken me for that Ms. Jenkins again."Honestly, now I'm curious. Just how much do I look like her?"She smiled politely and held out her hand."Hi, I'm Yara from the Scott Group. And you are?"The moment Cecilia heard her introduce herself, the fear on her face faded, replaced by icy hostility."Since you asked, I'll tell you. I'm Joshua's woman. I'm the mother of his child. Now you know who I am."Yara blinked in confusion."Huh? I thought Joshua's child was born to Ms. Jenkins. I'm... not sure I understand."Cecilia's expression darkened."I don't want to explain all that. I'm only here to warn you. Don't even think about coming between Joshua and me. Do you understand?
