Chapter 9

Penulis: Flora Rowan
The day before Joshua and Cecilia's wedding, Sheila finally received the call she had been waiting for.

Her immigration paperwork had been approved.

For days, she had wandered through life like an empty shell. Only after answering that phone call did a trace of color finally return to her face.

After hanging up with the embassy, she immediately booked a flight to Francoria.

Once everything was arranged, she slowly packed her belongings, pushing her wheelchair from room to room.

There was nothing in this house worth taking with her. Other than her identification and important documents, she planned to leave everything behind, including every gift Joshua and Max had ever given her — from the little crafts Max had made with his own hands to the expensive jewelry Joshua had bought for her.

Once upon a time, she had treasured every single one of them, carefully storing them away as though they were priceless…

Until she entered that forbidden room yesterday. Only then had she realized that every gift she had ever received was merely a copy of one Cecilia had received first. Even the little ceramic figurine Max had supposedly made especially for her had been nothing more than one of his failed practice pieces.

She gathered every item connected to Joshua and Max, then she carried everything into the backyard.

One by one, she threw them into a fire.

The flames slowly rose into the night sky. As she watched them burn, it felt as though the last pieces of her heart were being reduced to ashes along with them.

Only after the fire had completely died out did she wheel herself back inside.

The moment she entered the house, she saw Joshua and Max coming downstairs. Both of them were dressed in formal suits, as though they had just returned from an important event.

The instant they saw Sheila, their expressions changed. They hurried over to her.

"Sheila, where have you been? Why are all the gifts we gave you gone from your room?"

Sheila answered calmly. "They were getting dusty. So, I cleaned them up and put them away."

The father and son visibly relaxed. They assumed she still had not discovered that her uterus had been removed.

When they first noticed the missing gifts, they had genuinely panicked. Seeing that she seemed no different than usual, Joshua smiled gently.

“I have been so busy lately that I have not spent much time with you. I only managed to stop by today to see how you're doing.

"We'll be away for the next few days too. However, once everything's over, how about the three of us take a family vacation together?"

Max happily threw himself into her arms. "Mom, aren't you excited? I am! My favorite thing is traveling with you and Dad."

Sheila's expression remained calm. She said nothing and she only gave a faint nod.

Relieved by her response, the father and son gave her a few more reminders before hurrying out the door.

What they did not know was that the moment they left, Sheila quietly wheeled herself out into the moonlit night with a suitcase resting on her lap.

Without looking back, she disappeared into the darkness.

Never to return.

...

The next day was the secret wedding Joshua had spent so long preparing for Cecilia.

Standing at the front of the chapel, Joshua watched the guests chatting and laughing as they waited for the ceremony to begin.

For some reason, an uneasy feeling settled over him.

He had invited only his closest friends. None of them would ever gossip in front of Sheila or reveal the truth. So why was his heart pounding so hard?

He told himself it was simply because he was finally marrying the woman he truly loved.

Even so, he could not shake the feeling.

Unable to resist, he called his assistant. "Go check whether Sheila is still at home.

"Whatever happens, don't let her find out about this wedding. If she discovers it, she'll definitely make a scene. Do you understand?"

Only after hanging up did he finally feel a little more at ease.

The ceremony began.

Dressed in a flowing white wedding gown, Cecilia slowly walked toward him beneath everyone's expectant gaze.

Walking ahead of her was the flower boy, Max.

Smiling brightly, he held out the wedding rings to Joshua.

Joshua reached for one of the rings.

Just as he was about to slide it onto Cecilia's finger, the phone in his pocket rang. His brows drew together.

Seeing his assistant's name on the screen, he answered with obvious irritation.

Before he could speak, the assistant's panicked voice burst through the phone.

"Mr. Stewart, something terrible has happened! Mrs. Stewart found out everything you did to her! While we weren't paying attention, she packed her luggage and left!

"We just received confirmation. The flight Mrs. Stewart boarded encountered severe turbulence. It crashed into the ocean. There were no survivors and not a single body has been recovered."

Just before Joshua lost consciousness, he thought he saw Sheila's face flash before him.He blinked. However, the familiar face was already gone. He lay on the cold pavement, every bone in his body aching as though it had been shattered.Voices and sirens filled his ears. People seemed to be talking about him, about the miserable state he was in.He could not make out the words. All he knew was that his legs hurt so badly he could no longer feel them.Cold.He was so cold that his entire body trembled uncontrollably. However, no one offered him even the slightest warmth. So this was what it felt like to be hit by a vehicle. When Sheila had been struck by the car he hired, she must have felt even more hopeless than he did now. After all, she had been run over by a truck.Perhaps this was fate's long-overdue judgment. At last, he was paying the price for everything he had done.As the paramedics lifted him into the ambulance, another siren wailed nearby. He vaguely heard the nur

Seeing that he had finally gotten to the point, Yara sat back down instead of leaving."Tell me. What was the relationship between your late Mrs. Stewart and Ms. Zeller? And Max, whose child is he really? Is he Ms. Zeller's... or Mrs. Stewart's?"Joshua buried his face in his hands. His mind was in complete chaos.Tilting his head back, he drained his glass in one gulp. The alcohol loosened his tongue, and he finally began telling her everything."Yara... I'll tell you. I'll tell you everything."Just... please don't leave me."Yara looked into his drunken, unfocused eyes and gave a slight nod."All right. Go on."Hearing her promise, Joshua finally let down his guard and confessed to everything from beginning to end."I know I failed Sheila. Ever since she died, I've regretted it every single day."I kept wishing I'd have one more chance to make things right. However, fate never gave me that chance."A tear slowly rolled down his face."I never wanted Sheila to die. I just

Cassius's expression turned grim the moment he heard Cecilia's story. He turned toward the Stewart family, and the friendliness in his tone disappeared completely."In that case, perhaps you should settle your own family matters first. As for the Stewart family, I think the Scott family would be wise to keep our distance."Also, from this day forward, Mr. Stewart, please stop bothering my sister."With that, he took Yara's hand and stormed off.Joshua instinctively tried to pursue them, but Cecilia grabbed his arm.He was furious, yet with Thomas standing there, he could not openly lose his temper.Only after their car had disappeared into the distance did Cassius grin and tease Yara."Everything happened exactly the way you predicted. Cecilia really couldn't keep her cool. Now she's completely infuriated the Stewart family. I doubt things are going to end well for her."Yara remained calm, as if none of it had surprised her."Now all we have to do is watch them tear each othe

After leaving the Stewart mansion, Cecilia's face was filled with hatred. She had waited for so many years. She always believed that as long as she endured everything in silence, she would eventually marry into the Stewart family. She had finally gotten rid of Sheila, yet now another woman had appeared.Yara.The Scott family was one of the most powerful families around. There was no way the Stewart family would pass up a marriage alliance with them. If that happened, she would never have another chance. The thought made her even more anxious. She could not just sit back and wait.At this point, her only option was to make the situation impossible to ignore. As long as everyone knew Max was her son, she would still have a chance.Soon, an idea formed in her mind.Meanwhile, after spending more time together, Joshua and Yara's relationship progressed rapidly. He even brought Yara to the Stewart mansion to meet Thomas. At first, Thomas had been uneasy. The young woman looked fa

The moment those words left his mouth, Cecilia completely fell apart. She screamed and lunged at him like a woman driven mad."Joshua! You're heartless!"If I have nothing to do with you, then who gave birth to Max? Tell me!"Yara glanced back at the nearly hysterical woman, then spoke with practiced generosity. "Joshua, this lady doesn't seem to be in a good state. Why don't you take her home first? I can always call my brother to come pick me up."Her understanding only made Cecilia seem even more unreasonable. Joshua helped Yara to her feet and wrapped an arm around her before coldly addressing the people nearby."My bodyguards will handle things here. Don't worry about her."Without giving Cecilia another glance, he walked away with Yara.Behind them, Cecilia cried and screamed his name, but not once did Joshua look back.Resting lightly against his shoulder, Yara curled her lips into a faint smile. The pain she had once suffered was finally being tasted by Cecilia instead

The moment their eyes met, Cecilia stumbled back several steps in shock. Then she forced herself to calm down and demanded, "Are you... a person or a ghost?"Yara smiled as though she had no idea who Cecilia was."That's a funny question. Of course I'm a person."Judging by your reaction, I guess you've mistaken me for that Ms. Jenkins again."Honestly, now I'm curious. Just how much do I look like her?"She smiled politely and held out her hand."Hi, I'm Yara from the Scott Group. And you are?"The moment Cecilia heard her introduce herself, the fear on her face faded, replaced by icy hostility."Since you asked, I'll tell you. I'm Joshua's woman. I'm the mother of his child. Now you know who I am."Yara blinked in confusion."Huh? I thought Joshua's child was born to Ms. Jenkins. I'm... not sure I understand."Cecilia's expression darkened."I don't want to explain all that. I'm only here to warn you. Don't even think about coming between Joshua and me. Do you understand?
