Chapter 8

Penulis: Flora Rowan
While Sheila lay unconscious, she seemed to drift through an endless dream. In it, she was in a hospital, lying on a cold operating table. Doctors and nurses in white coats surrounded her.

She wanted to speak and tried with all her strength, but no sound would come out.

She did not know how much time had passed before her eyes finally opened. To her surprise, she was lying in the bed of her own bedroom.

Every inch of her body ached.

She was just about to call for one of the maids when their voices drifted in from outside the door.

"Mrs. Stewart still isn't awake, is she? Poor thing."

"I know. Mr. Stewart always acts like he worships her, but who would have guessed he'd do something this cruel to her for Ms. Zeller?"

"Sir told him to cut all ties with Ms. Zeller and even arranged for someone to hit her with a car. Instead of taking it out on Sir, Mr. Stewart took it out on Mrs. Stewart."

"He drugged her, knocked her unconscious, took her to the hospital, and had her uterus removed."

"He even had a huge fight with Sir. He said if anyone ever laid another finger on Ms. Zeller, he'd make Mrs. Stewart suffer a hundred times worse, just like he did this time."

"He also said no one should even think about taking Max away."

"Mrs. Stewart can't have children anymore without her uterus."

"Only Ms. Zeller deserves to give birth to his child."

"Exactly. Mrs. Stewart is still recovering. To keep her from finding out, Mr. Stewart brought her straight home from the hospital."

"He specifically warned all of us not to let her discover the truth."

"Who would dare tell her? It would destroy her."

...

Sheila sat frozen on the bed. It felt as though a bolt of lightning had split her in two, every part of her body hurt so badly it felt ready to fall apart.

Her trembling hands slowly lifted the hem of her shirt, revealing a fresh surgical scar stretching across her lower abdomen. The stitches were still new. Perhaps because the anesthesia had not fully worn off, the pain was not yet overwhelming.

The pain in her heart, however, was another matter. It felt as though someone had wrapped a hand around it and was squeezing with all their strength, making it almost impossible for her to breathe.

Joshua had strangled their newborn son for Cecilia. He had crippled her legs for Cecilia. Now, he had taken her uterus too.

She could not bear it another second. She had to confront him.

Forcing herself out of bed, she staggered to her feet, grabbed her wheelchair and stumbled toward the door.

In her panic, she accidentally wandered into the one room Joshua had always forbidden anyone from entering.

The moment she pushed the door open… she froze.

She had thought his phone contained enough photos of Cecilia.

She had been wrong.

The room was filled with them. Pictures of Cecilia covered every wall, while the bookshelves were lined with countless keepsakes from their years together — a scarf Cecilia had knitted for him by hand, the love letters he had written to her, and even the preserved umbilical cord from the day she gave birth to Max.

On the desk lay a journal.

With trembling hands, Sheila opened it.

The very first sentence shattered what little remained of her heart.

[Today, I'm marrying a woman I do not love. I already know the rest of my life will be nothing but misery.]

Every line that followed was another knife sinking into her chest.

[Today, I slept with Sheila. She wanted more, so I comforted her gently and gave in one more time. Afterward, I took three showers.]

Sheila's fingers trembled violently as she turned the page.

Another entry came into view.

[I killed Sheila's baby with my own hands. He looked so much like her. Tiny, soft, fair-skinned.

For a moment, I almost could not do it. However, Cecilia cried. She said she could not bear the thought of me having a child with another woman. So, I sacrificed Sheila instead. I watched that baby take his last breath in my hands.]

...

Line after line, word after word, Sheila finally broke. She wanted to scream, to cry until the whole world heard her, yet not a single sound escaped her lips.

How could you love her this much, Joshua? How could you love her this much?

For her… you had dragged your own wife and your own son straight into hell.

Just before Joshua lost consciousness, he thought he saw Sheila's face flash before him.He blinked. However, the familiar face was already gone. He lay on the cold pavement, every bone in his body aching as though it had been shattered.Voices and sirens filled his ears. People seemed to be talking about him, about the miserable state he was in.He could not make out the words. All he knew was that his legs hurt so badly he could no longer feel them.Cold.He was so cold that his entire body trembled uncontrollably. However, no one offered him even the slightest warmth. So this was what it felt like to be hit by a vehicle. When Sheila had been struck by the car he hired, she must have felt even more hopeless than he did now. After all, she had been run over by a truck.Perhaps this was fate's long-overdue judgment. At last, he was paying the price for everything he had done.As the paramedics lifted him into the ambulance, another siren wailed nearby. He vaguely heard the nur

Seeing that he had finally gotten to the point, Yara sat back down instead of leaving."Tell me. What was the relationship between your late Mrs. Stewart and Ms. Zeller? And Max, whose child is he really? Is he Ms. Zeller's... or Mrs. Stewart's?"Joshua buried his face in his hands. His mind was in complete chaos.Tilting his head back, he drained his glass in one gulp. The alcohol loosened his tongue, and he finally began telling her everything."Yara... I'll tell you. I'll tell you everything."Just... please don't leave me."Yara looked into his drunken, unfocused eyes and gave a slight nod."All right. Go on."Hearing her promise, Joshua finally let down his guard and confessed to everything from beginning to end."I know I failed Sheila. Ever since she died, I've regretted it every single day."I kept wishing I'd have one more chance to make things right. However, fate never gave me that chance."A tear slowly rolled down his face."I never wanted Sheila to die. I just

Cassius's expression turned grim the moment he heard Cecilia's story. He turned toward the Stewart family, and the friendliness in his tone disappeared completely."In that case, perhaps you should settle your own family matters first. As for the Stewart family, I think the Scott family would be wise to keep our distance."Also, from this day forward, Mr. Stewart, please stop bothering my sister."With that, he took Yara's hand and stormed off.Joshua instinctively tried to pursue them, but Cecilia grabbed his arm.He was furious, yet with Thomas standing there, he could not openly lose his temper.Only after their car had disappeared into the distance did Cassius grin and tease Yara."Everything happened exactly the way you predicted. Cecilia really couldn't keep her cool. Now she's completely infuriated the Stewart family. I doubt things are going to end well for her."Yara remained calm, as if none of it had surprised her."Now all we have to do is watch them tear each othe

After leaving the Stewart mansion, Cecilia's face was filled with hatred. She had waited for so many years. She always believed that as long as she endured everything in silence, she would eventually marry into the Stewart family. She had finally gotten rid of Sheila, yet now another woman had appeared.Yara.The Scott family was one of the most powerful families around. There was no way the Stewart family would pass up a marriage alliance with them. If that happened, she would never have another chance. The thought made her even more anxious. She could not just sit back and wait.At this point, her only option was to make the situation impossible to ignore. As long as everyone knew Max was her son, she would still have a chance.Soon, an idea formed in her mind.Meanwhile, after spending more time together, Joshua and Yara's relationship progressed rapidly. He even brought Yara to the Stewart mansion to meet Thomas. At first, Thomas had been uneasy. The young woman looked fa

The moment those words left his mouth, Cecilia completely fell apart. She screamed and lunged at him like a woman driven mad."Joshua! You're heartless!"If I have nothing to do with you, then who gave birth to Max? Tell me!"Yara glanced back at the nearly hysterical woman, then spoke with practiced generosity. "Joshua, this lady doesn't seem to be in a good state. Why don't you take her home first? I can always call my brother to come pick me up."Her understanding only made Cecilia seem even more unreasonable. Joshua helped Yara to her feet and wrapped an arm around her before coldly addressing the people nearby."My bodyguards will handle things here. Don't worry about her."Without giving Cecilia another glance, he walked away with Yara.Behind them, Cecilia cried and screamed his name, but not once did Joshua look back.Resting lightly against his shoulder, Yara curled her lips into a faint smile. The pain she had once suffered was finally being tasted by Cecilia instead

The moment their eyes met, Cecilia stumbled back several steps in shock. Then she forced herself to calm down and demanded, "Are you... a person or a ghost?"Yara smiled as though she had no idea who Cecilia was."That's a funny question. Of course I'm a person."Judging by your reaction, I guess you've mistaken me for that Ms. Jenkins again."Honestly, now I'm curious. Just how much do I look like her?"She smiled politely and held out her hand."Hi, I'm Yara from the Scott Group. And you are?"The moment Cecilia heard her introduce herself, the fear on her face faded, replaced by icy hostility."Since you asked, I'll tell you. I'm Joshua's woman. I'm the mother of his child. Now you know who I am."Yara blinked in confusion."Huh? I thought Joshua's child was born to Ms. Jenkins. I'm... not sure I understand."Cecilia's expression darkened."I don't want to explain all that. I'm only here to warn you. Don't even think about coming between Joshua and me. Do you understand?
