The tracking beacon Eve had planted on Valentino's encrypted frequency led her straight to an abandoned rail yard on the industrial fringes of New Jersey. Rain had returned hard, slicking the rusted iron of old freight cars and turning the gravel tracks into a treacherous mire.

She killed the headlights of her tactical bike half a mile back and moved the rest of the way on foot. She'd come here furious, fully intending to corner him and pry the acoustic cipher loose by force if necessary. The moment she crossed the perimeter fence, though, the night's clinical calm shattered under a sound that turned her blood to ice.

This wasn't a gang war. It wasn't even the Board's usual mercenary cleanup. It was a massacre in progress.

A localized EMP blast had knocked out the grid entirely, plunging the yard into a pitch-black void lit only by the stuttering flash of heavy automatic fire and the blinding trails of incendiary rounds. Over a hundred operatives in unregistered, high-tier ballistic armor had the central warehouse surrounded in a perfect, multi-layered kill box.

And Valentino stood dead center of it.

Eve slipped between two rusted train cars, sidearm raised, breath shallow. The scale of the ambush went past anything she'd trained to expect — the volume of munitions tearing through steel deafening enough to vibrate straight through the soles of her boots. This wasn't an ambush built to wound. It was built to erase a god. His vanguard already lay dead or scattered across the gravel.

A thermite explosion tore through the warehouse's front wall, throwing a blinding white-hot sheet of fire into the night sky.

The blast knocked her flat. Coughing through acrid smoke, she scrambled onto her knees just as two masked ambushers caught her through their thermal visors. "Target sighted! Sidetrack her!" one barked, voice mechanical through a throat-mic.

Before she could raise her weapon, a massive shadow slammed into her from the side.

Valentino.

He didn't ask why she was there. Didn't waste a syllable on reproach. Pure instinct threw his entire armored bulk over her, shielding her body with his own against the incoming hail of rounds.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

She felt each impact shudder through his back as high-caliber fire slammed into his plating. He didn't flinch. In one fluid, terrifying motion he extended his arm over her shoulder and returned fire, his customized submachine gun dropping both ambushers instantly, armor-piercing rounds finding gaps she hadn't even seen.

"Get up." His voice tore out through the mask's modulator, gravelled and monstrous.

He hauled her upright by the vest — and then she heard it, a wet, sickening thud beneath the gunfire. A stray sniper round had found the gap between two plates and torn clean through the meat of his shoulder. Blood soaked black through his shirt almost instantly.

He didn't stop moving. Didn't make a sound.

From behind a collapsing shipping container, Vincenzo staggered into the firelight — the same steady marksman who'd stood at Valentino's side on the mountain pass months earlier, now barely upright, left leg shredded by shrapnel and dragging uselessly behind him, a deep crimson stain spreading fast across his ribs. He fired his sidearm one-handed into the dark, his other arm hanging limp.

"Sovereign!" Vincenzo's voice tore ragged with pain as he collapsed against a rusted wheel well. "Eastern flank's breached — they got through the heavy armor. We need to clear out. Now!"

Valentino didn't hesitate, even with his own shoulder still bleeding freely. He grabbed Vincenzo by the collar of his ruined vest and dragged him across the gravel with his good arm, the other still locked protectively around Eve's waist, using his own body as cover for both of them while shells detonated around them, throwing shrapnel and blinding dirt into the air.

They reached the drainage ditch where the armored SUV sat hidden. Valentino hauled Vincenzo into the back seat, where he collapsed onto the floorboards groaning, then shoved Eve into the passenger side, slammed her door, and vaulted the console into the driver's seat. Tires shrieked as he tore the vehicle through a chain-link fence and out onto the rain-slicked highway toward the compound.

The drive back passed in a silent, grinding nightmare. In the back, Vincenzo's breathing had gone shallow and wet, hands shaking as he worked a field tourniquet around his mangled leg. Up front, Valentino kept his left hand locked white-knuckled on the wheel, right arm hanging stiff, blood pooling steadily into the leather beneath him. By the time the compound's iron gates sealed behind them, the adrenaline had bottomed out entirely, leaving him slumped against the wheel.

Eve didn't waste a second. She rounded the car, ripped the driver's door open, and hauled him out by his uninjured arm.

"Get him to the medical bay." His voice ground out strained through the modulator, nodding toward Vincenzo. "The compound medics will handle him. You — stay away from me."

"Ryan! Mia!" Eve barked into her comms, alerting her own standby unit to intercept the compound's medical staff. "Get down here, secure the commander. He's crashing."

While the estate's staff rushed a half-conscious Vincenzo onto a gurney, Eve turned her full attention on Valentino, who was already staggering toward the dim, grand library, steps heavy and uneven. She followed him in, heavy oak doors sealing out the chaos of the garage behind them.

He collapsed onto the leather sofa, head falling back against the cushions. His trembling, bloody hand went first to the mask — not to remove it, only to check the latches, confirming the carbon fiber sat locked exactly where it needed to. Only his sharp, sweat-slicked jaw and tight, pale mouth showed in the firelight.

Eve grabbed the medical kit off the side table and snapped it open, pulling the surgical shears free.

"No." His modulated voice cracked as he tried to push her hand away with his good arm. "Get back to your estate, Eve. My people have their hands full with Vincenzo. I can handle a flesh wound. Don't touch me."

She didn't argue. She didn't raise her voice. She simply leaned down, both hands braced flat on the leather on either side of his head, pinning him beneath her stare — a look so absolute, so unwilling to yield an inch, that it left no room for argument at all.

He stared back through the dark lenses, jaw tightening. For three long seconds, a silent war played out between them in the flickering hearth light. Finally he exhaled, sharp and ragged, and let his head fall back in total, grudging surrender.

"Fine." Through his teeth. "Do it."

She sliced through the ruined silk of his shirt, careful to keep the shears well clear of the mask's straps, exposing the raw, weeping exit wound beneath. The antiseptic went on without warning.

His whole body went rigid, knuckles bleaching white against the armrest, mouth pressed into a bloodless line as his jaw ticked hard — but he held his posture through it without a single sound.

As she threaded the needle and began closing the wound, his masked stare tracked her every movement through the haze of pain.

"What the hell were you doing out there, Eve?" His voice dropped low and dangerous through the modulator. "That wasn't your fight. You had no business tracking my frequency. You almost got yourself erased tonight."

She wiped a smear of his blood from her fingers, expression flat as she pulled the first stitch tight. "I came because of what we found in Sophia's files. My memory wasn't erased, Valentino. It was locked. An Obsidian Lock. And the ledger says whoever finalized that protocol wiped the frequency keys behind them on purpose."

She tied off the stitch with one sharp pull.

"You told me, in this exact room, that you know where the key to my own mind is being kept." Her face hovered inches from his exposed mouth. "So tell me what you actually know. Tell me why you're the one holding the map to it."

He stared up at her, the heat of her nearness tangled with the bite of the needle still working through his skin. Behind his silent, calculating gaze, the billionaire husband fought hard to keep the sovereign's mask from slipping even a fraction further than it already had tonight.

Blue light from the biometric terminal threw long, skeletal shadows across the interrogation room. Sophia had finally gone quiet, head hanging low, worn down by hours of steady psychological pressure. On the main console, cascading lines of red code froze mid-scroll, replaced by a slow, rotating render of a human brain laced through with a localized neural grid. Aria's fingers flew across the keyboard, the earlier amusement gone entirely, replaced by professional intensity. "Viper, look at this. Finally bypassed the second layer on the files we pulled from Sophia's bag. This isn't just financial data or Viper program blueprints. It's a medical archive." Eve stepped closer, boots quiet against the concrete, eyes fixed on the glowing render of her own mind with an intensity that didn't blink. "Is it the erasure sequence?" Her voice came dangerously quiet. "That's the thing." Aria zoomed into a dense, highlighted cluster of synapses in the prefrontal cortex. "Your memory was never

The fragile peace of the morning shattered under a low, rhythmic chime vibrating from the mahogany nightstand. Valentino didn't move quickly — he never did — but the fluid grace with which he reached for the encrypted satellite phone spoke of a man permanently on a war footing, even in the quietest hours. He pressed the receiver to his masked ear and listened in dead silence. On the other end, the voice of his primary tactical commander, Marcello, carried an uncharacteristic tightness."Sovereign, we have a breach. The Board's secondary tier in Brooklyn didn't wait for the financial liquidation to clear. They've locked down the cargo terminal at Port Elizabeth — three of our high-value transport containers pinned under heavy munitions, and they've taken the local port director hostage. They're demanding a direct audience with the head of Voss Enterprises, or with Italy's ghost. It needs your personal intervention, sir. If we don't move now, they blow the manifest."Behind the black vi

The storm outside had subsided into a steady, rhythmic patter against the leaded glass windows, leaving the eastern wing wrapped in a heavy, exhausted calm. Inside the master suite, the fireplace had burned down to a pile of glowing amber embers, throwing faint, warm shadows across the bed.Eve woke up slowly, her body heavy with a deep, systemic ache. But for the first time in months, her mind wasn't instantly screaming in a hyper-vigilant panic. She was warm.A massive, heavy arm was slung loosely over her waist, pinning her securely against a broad, solid chest. She shifted slightly, her breathing catching as she realized Valentino was still awake. He lay propped up against the dark wood headboard, his massive frame motionless. The matte-black ballistic mask was still securely locked in place, a stark, terrifying contrast to the soft linen sheets pooled around his waist. She expected him to tighten his grip, to reassert the suffocating dominance that had broken her walls the night

The underworld of New York didn't gather in abandoned warehouses. It congregated in the subterranean, high-security VIP lounges tucked beneath Manhattan's elite, soundproofed clubs. Tonight, the air inside The Obsidian Room hung thick with cigar smoke, vintage crystal, and the low murmur of international arms dealers trading pleasantries with syndicate bosses who'd never once used their real names in this room. And directly in the center of it, the entire lounge went still the moment Italy's sovereign walked in.Alex kept the matte-black ballistic mask locked firmly in place, its angular carbon-fiber lines catching the dark red neon crawling across the walls. Behind the tinted, one-way visor, his eyes stayed completely invisible, the golden gaze of a Manhattan billionaire buried where no one in this room would ever think to look for it. Beside him, Eve moved with a quiet, lethal grace of her own. A sleek, backless black dress concealed the white tactical gauze still wrapped tight arou

I need to call Ryan," she said, once the room stopped moving. "Tell him status.""Do it." He gestured toward the encrypted phone clipped at her hip, the one he himself had programmed his number into hours ago in a foyer that no longer felt like it belonged to tonight. "I'm not stopping you from talking to your people, Eve. I'm stopping you from getting back in a car in the next six hours. There's a difference, and I'd like you to notice it, because I don't intend to keep pointing it out."She stared at him a long moment — the towering, coiled stillness of him, the brown contacts that couldn't quite kill the gold underneath if you looked long enough, the particular way he held himself like a man perpetually deciding whether violence was necessary and finding, each time, that it wasn't. Not yet.She pulled out the phone.Ryan picked up on the first ring, voice tight with the specific static of a man who'd been sitting on bad instincts for hours. "Viper. Talk to me. Eve woke tangled in sheets that didn’t belong to her, the unfamiliar softness cocooning her limbs. The morning sun, bold and intrusive, leaked through gauzy curtains, painting the room in gold. Eve struggled to breathe. It wasn’t because Alex was holding her too tight—though he definitely was. Every second in his arms chipped away at the walls she’d spent years building. He looked just like the photos, just like Sophia had always described. Tall. Broad shoulders. The scent of his cologne,
