The silence that followed her question was heavy, suffocating, absolute. The only sound in the vast library was the wet, metallic click of Eve dropping the bloody surgical shears back into the medical kit. She didn't step back. She stayed suspended over him, hands braced on the leather cushions, holding his massive frame beneath her clinical scrutiny.

Valentino didn't flinch from her closeness. Behind the tinted lenses of his half-mask, his hidden eyes held her with a terrifyingly calm intensity. His exposed mouth, sharp and pale from blood loss, parted on a slow, controlled breath that brushed warm against her cheek.

"You talk about keys and ciphers like they're trophies to hand a child, Eve," he murmured, voice dragging low and gravelled through the modulator, warmth entirely absent from it. "You think you're ready to walk through that door? Look at yourself. You're bleeding under that jacket. Your squad's running on borrowed time. And you want me to point you straight at the one thing that could unravel what's left of your mind before you're ready to survive it."

"Don't patronize me." Her jaw tightened, stare boring into the unyielding carbon fiber. "I survived the Board's arena. I broke Sophia in my own cells. I'm not some fragile asset that needs managing. If my mind is a fortress, I want to know exactly where the gate is."

His uninjured arm moved before she'd finished the sentence — a sudden, explosive motion that defied the wound still bleeding through his shirt. His gloved hand locked around the back of her neck, fingers tangling rough into her hair, and with one fluid pull he drew her down until her mouth hovered a breath from his. The sheer weight of it caught her off guard, heat sparking instant and electric between them.

"You want the truth about the key?" His voice dropped into something darker, breath a possessive hum against her skin. "The Obsidian Lock wasn't built by the Board to control you, Eve. It was built by a man who wanted to keep you alive. Your father coded that architecture himself, and when he finished it, he made sure no copy of the stabilizer formula existed anywhere the Board could reach it. He carried the only complete version underground with him. It's in Palermo. With him. Not with me."

Her heart hammered hard against her ribs. She could feel the coiled tension of his chest rising and falling against hers, the smell of rain and copper and leather crowding out everything else. Despite the weight of his voice, she didn't back down, fingers digging into the front of his vest, holding her ground. "Then take me to him."

"I intend to," he said, quieter now. "But you go in blind and desperate, the way you're standing in front of me right now, and Palermo kills you before you ever reach the man who can actually help you. I know where he is. I know the men circling that asylum, waiting for exactly this — for you to come running the second you learned enough to be reckless about it. I'm not the gatekeeper here, Eve. I'm the only reason you might actually survive getting through the gate at all."

A low growl rumbled in his throat as his gaze dropped to her mouth, something starved and possessive moving across his exposed jaw. He didn't answer with more words. His mouth found hers instead, fierce and consuming, silencing whatever argument she'd been building.

It was a hard, desperate kiss, his tongue parting her lips with a slow, deliberate hunger that scattered her thoughts entirely. His hand anchored her neck tight enough that pulling away was never really an option, and she found she didn't want one. The pain in his stitched shoulder disappeared entirely, drowned under the suffocating heat of her closeness.

She groaned against his mouth, resistance melting away as she surrendered to the current pulling through her, hands sliding up to wrap around his neck, body molding fully into his on the leather sofa.

When he finally broke away, his mouth lingered at the edge of her jaw, breath ragged. "You'll wait until we can move on Palermo properly," he murmured against her skin, voice dropped into something low enough to feel like a vow rather than an order. "You'll let me clear the ground first. Your father built that lock to protect you — the least either of us can do is not get you killed reaching him."

Eve rested her forehead against the cold edge of his mask, breath fracturing as she fought to pull her composure back into place. She resented him for the weight of what he knew, resented the careful way he kept doling out her own history to her one piece at a time — but looking at his exposed, bloodied jaw, she understood, however reluctantly, that his caution came from something closer to fear for her than control over her.

Behind the mask, Alex Voss closed his eyes, arm tightening around his eve's waist as he held her in the dim firelight. The lie had held one more night. The sovereign had kept the secret intact. But as the storm rumbled on outside, he understood, with a certainty that settled cold in his chest, that the shores of Sicily would eventually force every mask in this story to come off — his included.

Ryan found the match at two in the morning and had the sense not to wake anyone until six. By the time Eve came downstairs, he had it laid out clean across the main screen — the silent partner's name from the Voss acquisition records, side by side with a scanned page from her father's Palermo intake file. Same signature. Same looping, deliberate hand on the E that her father still wrote the same way now, twenty years and one collapsed identity later. "It's an alias," Ryan said, before she'd finished crossing the room. "Not a different man. Same handwriting, same notarization pattern, same shell-company habits your father used everywhere else in his file. He was inside Voss Enterprises eighteen years ago. Before Alex ever took control of the company." Eve stared at the two signatures until they stopped looking like evidence and started looking like her father's hand on a birthday card, on a lease, on the back of a photograph she didn't remember yet. "He never told either of us." "

She told him in the study with the call ended and the door closed and Ryan gone, the tablet on the desk between them. Alex read the name. Looked up at her. The particular stillness that came over him in moments like this — not shock, something colder and more precise, the stillness of a man rapidly revising a structural understanding he'd held for years — settled over his face like weather."He had access to everything I was building," Alex said slowly. "Every acquisition. Every financial structure. Every person who touched the company in that three-year window." He looked at the name again. "And he had access to the program's development from the other direction. And he had a connection to your father that preceded all of it.""He didn't invest in your company," Eve said. "He built a position inside it. While he was building the Board beside it. While he was building the program through it." She held Alex's gaze. "He built the whole architecture, Alex. The Board, the program, the pos

The tight briefing happened at nine with Aria absorbing the routing analysis the way she absorbed everything — fast, with the particular still intensity that meant she was already three decisions ahead and waiting for everyone else to catch up. Every one of the eleven endpoint entities had some connection, however buried, to physical infrastructure — ports, rail lines, a private airfield in northern Spain, two logistics companies, a freight insurance firm, three holding companies with controlling interest in regional utilities across the Eastern Mediterranean."She's not buying leverage over the Board," Aria said, looking at the map Ryan had built. "She's buying the infrastructure the Board depends on to move anything physical.""Ports," Alex said. "Rail. Air access." He looked at Eve. "She's building a stranglehold on their phy

The alert blinked patient and unread on Ryan's third screen long after everyone else had gone to bed.Eve found it at five-forty in the morning. She hadn't slept badly — hadn't slept badly in weeks now, which was its own kind of miracle she still didn't fully trust — but something had pulled her out of the warmth of Alex's arm across her waist and down the dark stairs before she'd fully understood why. Instinct. The particular low-frequency pull of something not yet wrong but not yet right either, like a sound at the edge of hearing she couldn't place from the bedroom. She stood in Ryan's monitoring hub in the grey pre-dawn in bare feet and Alex's shirt, reading the flag on screen three, and felt the night's quiet close in around her.Sophia's authorization signature. Alex read the card in the war room, Ryan looking over his shoulder."The board in Zurich isn't the ceiling. It's the floor." Ryan turned it over, looking for anything on the back. "That's either a genuine tip or Marcus trying to send us chasing something that doesn't exist.""It's both," Eve said. She was at the map, looking at the Board's known hierarchy — the directors, the shell architecture, the funding trails Ryan had spent three weeks pulling apart. "He's not lying. But he's giving us something real at exactly the moment it benefits him for us to look somewhere other than where he actually is.""So we don't chase it," Alex said."We log it. We come back to it after Naples." She put her finger on the map. "Naples is still four days out. The routing hardware is still moving. Marcus sending a night probe and a cryptic card doesn't change the target — it means he's trying to change our focus.""He knows about Naples," Aria said, from the door."He knew about it before we did." The morning was deceptively ordinary.Eve woke first, which rarely happened. Alex slept on his good shoulder, one arm still loosely across her waist in the unconscious, possessive way he had even in sleep, and she lay there for a while doing nothing at all — studying the ceiling, listening to the lake, cataloguing the particular quality of his breathing. Deep. Even. The breathing of a man who'd finally stopped bracing for the next thing, at least for these few hours. She'd spent years not knowing what this felt like. Being still beside someone and wanting to stay.Eventually she eased out from under his arm without waking him, pulled on his shirt from the chair because it was closer than hers, and went downstairs to make coffee the way she'd learned he actually liked it — espresso base, a splash of cold water, nothing sweet. She'd picked it up without meaning to, the same way she'd learned that he read the financial pages before anything else, that he always checked the lake view firs
