In the damp, subterranean quiet of the estate garage, Eve checked her gear with mechanical precision. Around her, the squad moved in silent, rehearsed sync, like extensions of her own will. The black tactical vest sat heavy against her frame—a familiar second skin whose weight grounded her firmly in the brutal reality of the present.

She adjusted the suppressor on her sidearm with practiced ease, feeling the cold steel click smoothly into place, before tightening the tactical harness across her chest. Every check, every pull of a strap, was an automatic ritual forged through years of ingrained habit. Yet beneath the muscle memory, her mind was far from empty.

Memories of her life some months ago drifted into her thoughts—quiet, late-night dinners with Alex in the heart of the city, the simple, terrifying joy of being seen and held without the crushing weight of a covert program hanging over her head. In the past, those thoughts would have compromised her focus. Tonight, they fueled her. Those soft fragments felt distant, like echoes from another woman’s life, but they gave her something real to anchor to.

The Ice Queen was the persona that led with lethal grace, but the woman who had once tasted freedom as Sophia ensured this fight remained deeply personal. And it was personal. Marcus was closing in, deliberately poking at her vulnerabilities. He wanted to break her—and worse, his tactics suggested he might actually know her true identity.

“Convoy decoy is rolling,” Ryan reported over the comms from his command node back at the house. His voice was steady, crisp, and filtered through the secure mesh network. “Digital signature heavy on the main corporate tower. Looks like the Ice Queen is officially burning the midnight oil on legitimate contracts—Zurich reviews and Mediterranean expansions. Staff are on edge. Thomas Hale just messaged that two more board members want emergency briefings by tomorrow morning.”

“Keep Hale calm,” Eve replied softly, her hand lingering on the grip of her pistol. “Tell him I’ll handle the board once the board’s threats are dealt with.”

Eve nodded to the team, sliding into the passenger seat of the lead vehicle beside Aria. The engine turned over with a low, throat-clearing growl. Behind them, Mia took the follow car, its trunk loaded with additional drone support, signal jammers, and portable electronic warfare kits.

The garage’s heavy steel doors whispered open on well-oiled tracks, revealing a slick, rain-soaked driveway. Without turning on their headlights, they slipped into the blackness of the night, running entirely dark toward the latest probe site on the industrial fringe.

The city’s outskirts blurred past in shades of dark gray and orange sodium light—dilapidated warehouses, rusting crane armatures, and overgrown lots. It was the kind of desolate, liminal terrain that had once been their playground during program ops.

“Specter’s line is active,” Mia confirmed over the comms a few minutes into the drive, her voice layered with the faint white noise of satellite encryption. “Geneva relay just pinged us. They’re pushing harder on the Zurich anomalies, trying to force a visible, panicked reaction from corporate headquarters. Looks like they swallowed the controlled leaks whole.”

“Let them digest it,” Eve replied, her tone cool and clipped as forged steel. “We give them exactly the reaction they’re baiting out. Overconfidence has always been their greatest weakness—they think they’re hunting a frightened executive, not a ghost.”

The motion of the car sharpened her focus to a razor’s edge. In the quiet darkness of the cabin, fragments of her time as Sophia replayed in controlled, deliberate flashes. She recalled the warmth she had allowed herself to feel with Alex, sitting on the living room floor, sharing genuine insights over lukewarm takeout. It hadn’t been entirely an act. She had gone to him initially out of desperate necessity—needing money, a clean paper trail, and stability when the program’s ghosts first pressed too close after she went dark. Sophia had been the shield—a constructed softness, a way to breathe when the air was toxic.

Now, Viper was the blade: honed, cold, and unforgiving.

The real Sophia—the woman currently hiding out at Lake Como, who had switched places with her in that crowded Italian café before engineering the warehouse fire—was a complication for later. That version of her was currently scheming her own takeover of the Voss empire from the safety of a peaceful villa, maintaining a performative intimacy with Alex over encrypted lines that Eve knew must feel entirely hollow. Let her play the heiress, Eve thought bitterly. For tonight, the squad and the immediate tactical threat came first.

They reached the designated perimeter zone in under twenty minutes. Aria killed the engine in a shadowed alcove between two abandoned freight containers, coasting the last hundred yards on momentum alone.

The moment the car stopped, the team ghosted into position. Thermal cloaks wrapped around their shoulders, blending their heat signatures seamlessly with the cool night air. Suppressed carbines came up to high-ready, and comms switched to short-range tight-beam transmission.

The air outside tasted of heavy industrial rust, wet concrete, and the ozone charge of a distant storm. Eve stepped out onto the damp gravel, her heart rate hovering in a slow, calculated zone. The old operational rhythm settled back into her bones like an ill-fitting coat she had been forced to wear again.

“Two teams,” Mia whispered from her overwatch position on a crumbling rooftop three hundred yards to the north. “I’ve got Marcus’s signatures confirmed on the eastern approach. They’re probing the decoy feed we intentionally left vulnerable. Standard wedge formation—it’s textbook program training.”

Eve crouched behind a rusted shipping container, her eyes scanning the ink-black expanse through her night-vision monocle. Phosphor-green light painted the landscape, highlighting three figures moving with eerie, practiced synchronization along the perimeter fence line.

“Hold until they commit fully,” Eve commanded, her voice barely a breath against her collar mic. “Let them cross the breach point. Then we pin them in the choke. We take the leadership element alive if possible. Information first—I want Marcus’s precise location, Specter’s funding chain, and how much they know about the Como switch.”

Aria shifted silently beside her, raising her weapon to cover the left flank. “And if they fight back?”

Eve’s lips thinned into a hard, unforgiving line in the dark. “Then we remind them why the program tried so hard to erase us.”

Ryan found the match at two in the morning and had the sense not to wake anyone until six. By the time Eve came downstairs, he had it laid out clean across the main screen — the silent partner's name from the Voss acquisition records, side by side with a scanned page from her father's Palermo intake file. Same signature. Same looping, deliberate hand on the E that her father still wrote the same way now, twenty years and one collapsed identity later. "It's an alias," Ryan said, before she'd finished crossing the room. "Not a different man. Same handwriting, same notarization pattern, same shell-company habits your father used everywhere else in his file. He was inside Voss Enterprises eighteen years ago. Before Alex ever took control of the company." Eve stared at the two signatures until they stopped looking like evidence and started looking like her father's hand on a birthday card, on a lease, on the back of a photograph she didn't remember yet. "He never told either of us." "

She told him in the study with the call ended and the door closed and Ryan gone, the tablet on the desk between them. Alex read the name. Looked up at her. The particular stillness that came over him in moments like this — not shock, something colder and more precise, the stillness of a man rapidly revising a structural understanding he'd held for years — settled over his face like weather."He had access to everything I was building," Alex said slowly. "Every acquisition. Every financial structure. Every person who touched the company in that three-year window." He looked at the name again. "And he had access to the program's development from the other direction. And he had a connection to your father that preceded all of it.""He didn't invest in your company," Eve said. "He built a position inside it. While he was building the Board beside it. While he was building the program through it." She held Alex's gaze. "He built the whole architecture, Alex. The Board, the program, the pos

The tight briefing happened at nine with Aria absorbing the routing analysis the way she absorbed everything — fast, with the particular still intensity that meant she was already three decisions ahead and waiting for everyone else to catch up. Ryan had the eleven corporate registrations pulled by then, and the thread running through all of them, once visible, was impossible to unsee.Infrastructure. Every one of the eleven endpoint entities had some connection, however buried, to physical infrastructure — ports, rail lines, a private airfield in northern Spain, two logistics companies, a freight insurance firm, three holding companies with controlling interest in regional utilities across the Eastern Mediterranean."She's not buying leverage over the Board," Aria said, looking at the map Ryan had built. "She's buying the infrastructure the Board depends on to move anything physical.""Ports," Alex said. "Rail. Air access." He looked at Eve. "She's building a stranglehold on their phy

The alert blinked patient and unread on Ryan's third screen long after everyone else had gone to bed.Eve found it at five-forty in the morning. She hadn't slept badly — hadn't slept badly in weeks now, which was its own kind of miracle she still didn't fully trust — but something had pulled her out of the warmth of Alex's arm across her waist and down the dark stairs before she'd fully understood why. Instinct. The particular low-frequency pull of something not yet wrong but not yet right either, like a sound at the edge of hearing she couldn't place from the bedroom. She stood in Ryan's monitoring hub in the grey pre-dawn in bare feet and Alex's shirt, reading the flag on screen three, and felt the night's quiet close in around her.Sophia's authorization signature. Alex read the card in the war room, Ryan looking over his shoulder."The board in Zurich isn't the ceiling. It's the floor." Ryan turned it over, looking for anything on the back. "That's either a genuine tip or Marcus trying to send us chasing something that doesn't exist.""It's both," Eve said. She was at the map, looking at the Board's known hierarchy — the directors, the shell architecture, the funding trails Ryan had spent three weeks pulling apart. "He's not lying. But he's giving us something real at exactly the moment it benefits him for us to look somewhere other than where he actually is.""So we don't chase it," Alex said."We log it. We come back to it after Naples." She put her finger on the map. "Naples is still four days out. The routing hardware is still moving. Marcus sending a night probe and a cryptic card doesn't change the target — it means he's trying to change our focus.""He knows about Naples," Aria said, from the door."He knew about it before we did." The morning was deceptively ordinary.Eve woke first, which rarely happened. Alex slept on his good shoulder, one arm still loosely across her waist in the unconscious, possessive way he had even in sleep, and she lay there for a while doing nothing at all — studying the ceiling, listening to the lake, cataloguing the particular quality of his breathing. Deep. Even. The breathing of a man who'd finally stopped bracing for the next thing, at least for these few hours. She'd spent years not knowing what this felt like. Being still beside someone and wanting to stay.Eventually she eased out from under his arm without waking him, pulled on his shirt from the chair because it was closer than hers, and went downstairs to make coffee the way she'd learned he actually liked it — espresso base, a splash of cold water, nothing sweet. She'd picked it up without meaning to, the same way she'd learned that he read the financial pages before anything else, that he always checked the lake view firs
