The low, persistent vibration of Eve's comm-link broke the tense, heavy quiet of the library.

She didn't startle. Didn't break eye contact with the dark, unyielding visor of Valentino's mask, even as his exposed mouth stayed set, his breath still warm against her skin. She remained draped over his frame on the leather sofa, hands braced flat on the cushions on either side of his head, holding him beneath the full weight of her attention.

With one slow, deliberate motion, she reached up and tapped her earpiece.

*"Viper!"* Aria's voice tore through the encryption, thick with a cold panic that didn't belong to her. *"Catastrophic breach in the lower tech bay. The asset is gone. Marcus bypassed the secondary relay with a phantom loop override. Severed the chains, cleared the perimeter — it's been seventy seconds. Ryan's rerouting local tracking but they already hit a blind spot. Sophia's gone."*

Up close, she watched Valentino's jaw tighten fractionally beneath his armor, the modulator in his collar clicking soft as his muscles flexed, his hidden eyes tracking her face through the tinted lenses. He was waiting for her to break. Waiting for the commander in her to shatter.

Instead she let out a slow, quiet exhale. Her features didn't twist. Her pulse didn't even climb.

A heavy, total calm settled over her expression instead, eyes gone cool and still. She looked down at his bloodied shoulder, fingers tracing the edge of the fresh stitches she'd pulled tight herself, entirely unbothered by the disaster pouring into her ear.

"Calm down, Aria," she said into the comm, voice dropping into a smooth, almost melodic register that stunned the entire squad on the other end of the line.

*"Calm down?"* Aria sputtered, a second crunch of broken porcelain audible under her boot. *"Viper, we just lost our only real leverage against the Board. Marcus completely played us—"*

"Marcus didn't play anyone." Eve shifted her weight slightly, hip settling against Valentino's uninjured side as she leaned closer to the mask, taking her time, enjoying the total stillness of the man beneath her. "Marcus took exactly what I let him take."

Dead silence swallowed the comm channel. In the background, the rapid clatter of Ryan's keyboard froze mid-stroke.

"I finished pulling everything usable out of Sophia six hours ago," Eve said, a small, sharp edge of satisfaction touching her mouth — a look Valentino could see perfectly from where he lay. "The cipher origin for Palermo. The routing structure behind the Board's black treasury. Every thread worth having, she gave up before dawn, whether she realized it or not. After that, she stopped being useful to me as a prisoner. A depleted asset chained to a chair is a liability, not leverage."

Ryan's voice cracked through, disbelieving. *"Wait — you already had the Palermo lead? Then why did we keep running the neural scans? Why the extra four hours of interrogation?"*

"Because I wanted to be thorough, and because breaking her a little longer bought us cover," Eve said, dry amusement threading through the words. "It kept the Board's local scouts fixed entirely on the lower tech bay while my real assets tracked the New Jersey freight manifests. Two birds."

She reached down and tapped the hard carbon fiber of Valentino's cheekpiece once, light and mocking — a small salute to a man who'd clearly assumed he was the only strategist operating in this city tonight.

"Marcus thinks he just pulled off the heist of the century," she continued into the mic, eyes still locked on Valentino's exposed mouth. "Thinks he's got the keys to the whole kingdom walking out that door with him. He doesn't know Mia tagged her three days ago — isotopic marker, buried in the sedative baseline, nothing digital for anyone to scrub. Let them run, Ryan. Let Marcus believe he won. They're about to lead us straight to the real nest."

She didn't wait for Aria's response. She tapped the earpiece again, cutting the line, and let the library fall back into thick, private silence.

She stayed exactly where she was, chest rising and falling against his vest, fingers still resting near the edge of his mask. He hadn't moved, his good arm still looped loosely around her waist, anchoring her in place despite everything she'd just laid bare.

"You let her go on purpose," Valentino's voice ground out through the modulator, lower now, threaded with something that sounded almost like admiration. "Let a traitor breach your own home just to put a target on his back."

"I told you already." Eve leaned down until her mouth nearly brushed the matte-black visor shielding his eyes, calm radiating through the narrow space between them. "I'm not a piece in your maze. I'm the one drawing the map." A beat, sharper. "Now — are you going to tell me what Marcus is actually running toward, or do I let him die before we ever reach Palermo?"

Beneath her, the billionaire hidden behind the monster let out a low, textured laugh that vibrated straight through his chest and into hers.

The game had just turned considerably more lethal for everyone still playing it.

Ryan found the match at two in the morning and had the sense not to wake anyone until six. By the time Eve came downstairs, he had it laid out clean across the main screen — the silent partner's name from the Voss acquisition records, side by side with a scanned page from her father's Palermo intake file. Same signature. Same looping, deliberate hand on the E that her father still wrote the same way now, twenty years and one collapsed identity later. "It's an alias," Ryan said, before she'd finished crossing the room. "Not a different man. Same handwriting, same notarization pattern, same shell-company habits your father used everywhere else in his file. He was inside Voss Enterprises eighteen years ago. Before Alex ever took control of the company." Eve stared at the two signatures until they stopped looking like evidence and started looking like her father's hand on a birthday card, on a lease, on the back of a photograph she didn't remember yet. "He never told either of us." "

She told him in the study with the call ended and the door closed and Ryan gone, the tablet on the desk between them. Alex read the name. Looked up at her. The particular stillness that came over him in moments like this — not shock, something colder and more precise, the stillness of a man rapidly revising a structural understanding he'd held for years — settled over his face like weather."He had access to everything I was building," Alex said slowly. "Every acquisition. Every financial structure. Every person who touched the company in that three-year window." He looked at the name again. "And he had access to the program's development from the other direction. And he had a connection to your father that preceded all of it.""He didn't invest in your company," Eve said. "He built a position inside it. While he was building the Board beside it. While he was building the program through it." She held Alex's gaze. "He built the whole architecture, Alex. The Board, the program, the pos

The tight briefing happened at nine with Aria absorbing the routing analysis the way she absorbed everything — fast, with the particular still intensity that meant she was already three decisions ahead and waiting for everyone else to catch up. Ryan had the eleven corporate registrations pulled by then, and the thread running through all of them, once visible, was impossible to unsee.Infrastructure. Every one of the eleven endpoint entities had some connection, however buried, to physical infrastructure — ports, rail lines, a private airfield in northern Spain, two logistics companies, a freight insurance firm, three holding companies with controlling interest in regional utilities across the Eastern Mediterranean."She's not buying leverage over the Board," Aria said, looking at the map Ryan had built. "She's buying the infrastructure the Board depends on to move anything physical.""Ports," Alex said. "Rail. Air access." He looked at Eve. "She's building a stranglehold on their phy

The alert blinked patient and unread on Ryan's third screen long after everyone else had gone to bed.Eve found it at five-forty in the morning. She hadn't slept badly — hadn't slept badly in weeks now, which was its own kind of miracle she still didn't fully trust — but something had pulled her out of the warmth of Alex's arm across her waist and down the dark stairs before she'd fully understood why. Instinct. The particular low-frequency pull of something not yet wrong but not yet right either, like a sound at the edge of hearing she couldn't place from the bedroom. She stood in Ryan's monitoring hub in the grey pre-dawn in bare feet and Alex's shirt, reading the flag on screen three, and felt the night's quiet close in around her.Sophia's authorization signature. Alex read the card in the war room, Ryan looking over his shoulder."The board in Zurich isn't the ceiling. It's the floor." Ryan turned it over, looking for anything on the back. "That's either a genuine tip or Marcus trying to send us chasing something that doesn't exist.""It's both," Eve said. She was at the map, looking at the Board's known hierarchy — the directors, the shell architecture, the funding trails Ryan had spent three weeks pulling apart. "He's not lying. But he's giving us something real at exactly the moment it benefits him for us to look somewhere other than where he actually is.""So we don't chase it," Alex said."We log it. We come back to it after Naples." She put her finger on the map. "Naples is still four days out. The routing hardware is still moving. Marcus sending a night probe and a cryptic card doesn't change the target — it means he's trying to change our focus.""He knows about Naples," Aria said, from the door."He knew about it before we did." The morning was deceptively ordinary.Eve woke first, which rarely happened. Alex slept on his good shoulder, one arm still loosely across her waist in the unconscious, possessive way he had even in sleep, and she lay there for a while doing nothing at all — studying the ceiling, listening to the lake, cataloguing the particular quality of his breathing. Deep. Even. The breathing of a man who'd finally stopped bracing for the next thing, at least for these few hours. She'd spent years not knowing what this felt like. Being still beside someone and wanting to stay.Eventually she eased out from under his arm without waking him, pulled on his shirt from the chair because it was closer than hers, and went downstairs to make coffee the way she'd learned he actually liked it — espresso base, a splash of cold water, nothing sweet. She'd picked it up without meaning to, the same way she'd learned that he read the financial pages before anything else, that he always checked the lake view firs
