Rain that had threatened the city all morning finally broke loose, lashing hard against the reinforced windows of Eve's command center. The steady drum of water against glass was the only sound in the room besides the low hum of cooling fans running behind the server racks stacked along the far wall.

Eve stood at the central tactical table, palms flat against the glowing digital map beneath them. Simple black tactical turtleneck, hair pulled back into a stark, practical braid. No mask. Her face stayed fully exposed to her own squad now, the faint purple bruise along her jaw — a souvenir from Marcus — sitting there like a grim little medal for services rendered.

Her body was in the room. Her mind hadn't fully left that blue-shadowed bedroom yet, still tangled somewhere in the memory of a heavy frame shadowing hers, a gravelled voice murmuring things that made her pulse spike against her own better judgment.

Some things are better left unknown, Eve.

She closed her eyes briefly, jaw tightening. He was still in her head, weeks later, clogging every attempt she made to focus on a logistics report or a weapons inventory with the ghost of his hands instead. It read either as brilliant tactical misdirection or as something closer to obsession, and she genuinely couldn't tell anymore which explanation frightened her more. Either way, it was working exactly as intended.

"Viper."

Ryan's frustrated exhale cut through the fog. Her eyes snapped open, ice settling back into place across her expression as she turned toward him.

He slammed a palm flat against the edge of his desk, glaring at a screen full of cascading red errors. "I'm hitting a wall. A massive one. Ran the deeper scrub on the shadow accounts from Marcus's safehouse trying to get a fix on Specter, and the second I get close to a routing origin, the whole data trail fragments apart in front of me."

"Fragments." Eve crossed to his station, voice dropping into its coldest register. "That shouldn't be possible against your scrapers, Ryan."

"It's not standard encryption." He pointed at a shifting algorithm rewriting itself in real time on the monitor. "Someone's actively blocking us. Every time my worm digs into a ledger, a secondary counter-program rewrites the code right in front of my eyes, matching our speed move for move. It's a phantom firewall. Whoever's guarding Specter's treasury is watching me work in real time and cutting the thread before I can trace it home."

A memory surfaced unbidden — Valentino's hand closing around her wrist with terrifying, immediate precision. An immovable lock. Was he behind this too? Was the masked man in the streets nothing more than a distraction, cover for a tech operation quietly blinding her entire squad from somewhere she couldn't see?

"So we've got nothing?" Aria asked, walking over from the weapons bench, expression darkening by the second.

"Not nothing." Ryan's fingers flew across the keys, isolating a microscopic sliver of surviving data before the counter-program could finish erasing it. "Couldn't get a location on Specter. But while I was fighting the firewall, a corrupted personal file bled through the leak before it got crushed. Old military-grade cipher — the kind the original agency used, before the Board dismantled it and buried the wreckage."

Eve went rigid. "Decrypt it."

Ryan hit enter. A heavily corrupted black-and-white video log flared onto the screen, timestamp barely three weeks old, the feed distorted enough to blur most of the frame into static. A shadowed figure walked into a high-security medical facility somewhere in Eastern Europe. The face stayed obscured entirely — shadow, interference, whatever the corruption had eaten — but the posture, the distinct limp favoring the left leg, the specific ring visible on the man's right hand for one clean half-second, stopped her breath cold in her throat.

Her heart slammed against her ribs.

"That's—" The word died before she could finish it. Her grip on the edge of Ryan's desk went white-knuckled.

"Looks like your father's gait, Viper." Aria's voice had dropped to something careful, eyes wide on the fractured image. "But he was logged as a casualty in the purge years ago. They told everyone he was dead. You included."

"The data's too corrupted to call it certain." Ryan looked up at her, concern plain on his face. "It's a fragment. Could be a trap Marcus planted to throw us sideways. Could be a deepfake generated by whatever's running that firewall, built specifically to mess with your head. We can't verify it's actually him. Or someone counting on you wanting it to be."

She couldn't tear her eyes off the screen regardless. Her mind, already cluttered with Valentino's half-answers and the ghost of his touch, fractured further under the sheer weight of this new impossibility. Her past wasn't only missing anymore. It had started bleeding into the present in broken, deliberate signals, like something was choosing exactly when to let her see fragments and when to snatch them back.

Was her father alive. Running from Specter, or held by her. And why did Valentino keep circling back to the same warning, over and over, insisting the truth was a cage rather than a door?

"Viper?" Aria set a careful hand on her shoulder. "What's the play?"

Eve straightened slowly, bare face hardening into something lethal and entirely certain. Whatever vulnerability Valentino had managed to plant in her these past weeks burned away in an instant, replaced by a cold, focused rage that felt considerably more familiar. They were blocking her. Teasing her with ghosts instead of answers, filling her head with riddles dressed up as protection.

"We stop chasing digital ghosts." Her voice dropped to a whisper that carried more menace than a shout ever could have. "If someone's blocking us from Specter, we find a physical throat to squeeze instead. Ryan — keep digging at that firewall, but quietly. Aria — prep the armory." She looked back at the frozen frame on the screen, the blurred outline of a man who might or might not be the reason any of this had ever started in the first place. "Whoever's pulling these strings — Valentino, Marcus, some ghost wearing my father's walk — they think they can keep me circling in the dark forever."

She turned from the screen, jaw set.

"They're about to find out exactly what happens when the light finally comes on."

The gym inside Eve's estate held nothing but silence and the heavy, rhythmic thud of bare knuckles against leather.Thud. Thud. Thud.No wraps. No mask. Sweat ran into her eyes and stung there, and she didn't slow down to wipe it away. Every strike carried a chaotic, volatile charge she couldn't quite bleed out of her system no matter how hard she hit. The raid should have given her peace. She'd dismantled Marcus's operation, stared down his decoy's terrified face, proven beyond any doubt exactly who still owned this war.Instead her head stayed entirely, infuriatingly full of him. Some things are better left unknown, Eve.Valentino's voice looped in her ears on a track she couldn't shut off, drowning out every tactical thought she tried to force to the front. She could still feel the phantom pressure of his fingers locking around her wrist in that penthouse room, immovable, deliberate. He'd used her real name. Not Viper. Not the Ice Queen. Eve — a name she hadn't handed to anyone out

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty-Nine: The Edge of the Cage

Midnight over Lake Como sat thick and airless, the water gone black as poured ink. Sophia moved down the stone terrace steps like something that had learned a long time ago how to be quiet, bare feet silent against cold marble, timed precisely to a lull she'd spent three days confirming in the surveillance rotation. The main loops cycled on their standard automated pattern this late. She'd watched them do it every night this week, patient as a held breath, waiting for tonight. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Her face stayed dead calm regardless — the one skill Specter had never once let atrophy, no matter how many other pieces of herself she'd had to bury to survive this long. She reached the dock. The mahogany speedboat swayed gentle against its bumpers, patient as everything else tonight. She stepped aboard and worked the mooring knots loose with fingers that didn't shake, resisting the pull to start the engine early. Better to let the current carry her out first, silent, away

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty-Eight: The Cracking Foundation

The afternoon sun began its slow descent behind the jagged peaks ringing Lake Como, dragging long, blood-colored shadows across the floor of Sophia's private dressing room. The villa had gone quiet in that particular way it always did in the hour before dinner — the distant, unbothered lap of water against the docks the only sound loud enough to notice.Sophia stood before her vanity, fingers idly tracing the gold leaf bordering the mirror. On the surface she was the picture of serene, unhurried elegance. Underneath her skin, something cold and sharp had started screaming, and she was having considerably more trouble than usual convincing it to stay quiet. It had started with something almost too small to register. An hour earlier, walking the manicured gardens with Lila, she'd dropped a piece of misinformation the way she'd dropped a hundred others before it — casual, offhand, buried inside a longer sentence about nothing. She'd mentioned, idly, that she was considering moving a port

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty-Seven: The Golden Mirage

The private wing of the city estate stayed quiet as the afternoon sun dipped lower, casting long, sharp shadows across polished floorboards. Valentino stood before the small mirror in his personal bathroom, isolated from the staff and security detail moving through the grounds outside — the one room in the house where no one else was permitted to interrupt him mid-transformation.With a practiced, fluid motion, he pinched a thin, silver filament free from his right eye. He blinked against the sterile sting of saline, and as his lid opened, a brilliant golden iris caught the last of the window light. He repeated the motion with the left, dropping both contact lenses into their small plastic case. Without the silver tint concealing his gaze, the sharp, aristocratic lines of his face belonged entirely to Alex — the billionaire master of an estate that had absolutely nothing to do with masks or safehouses on paper.A quiet knock rattled the bathroom doorframe. Luca stepped into the thresh

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty-Six: The Reckoning

Cold night air bit sharp against Eve's bare face as she slipped through the perimeter gates of her estate. She hadn't put the mask back on. She wasn't sure, walking through those gates, that she ever would again. Her skin still carried a toxic heat, a lingering echo of hands and whispers and a wall he'd refused to let her past no matter how far she'd pushed. There was a raw, jagged friction sitting under her ribs now — not quite anger, not quite anything else she had a clean name for — fueled by the simple, infuriating fact that he apparently knew things about her own history that she couldn't reach on her own.The moment she stepped into the command room, the heavy silence shattered.Aria rose instantly from the weapons locker, eyes scanning Eve's disheveled suit and bare face. Ryan's fingers stilled over his keyboard. Mia lowered her drone controller without a word."Where the hell were you, Viper?" Aria's voice carried equal parts anger and real worry. "Comms were dead. No signal f

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter 6: Flickering Doubts

Eve paced the master bedroom, the thick carpet swallowing her footsteps. The storm had finally blown past, but it left behind a heavy, unnatural silence pressing in on the windows. Alex left her with a kiss on the forehead and a promise—he’d take care of Marcus. Whatever that meant. She could still

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter 5: Shadows of Truth

Three days drifted past, dissolving into a haze of silk sheets, whispered half-truths, and the subtle choreography of deception. The mansion breathed with hidden life, and Eve, ever watchful, adapted to its pulse. She fell in step with the staff’s daily rituals—the clatter of breakfast trays at eig

  • Ashes Of Desire     Chapter 4: Cracks in the Facade

Eve woke tangled in sheets that didn’t belong to her, the unfamiliar softness cocooning her limbs. The morning sun, bold and intrusive, leaked through gauzy curtains, painting the room in gold. For a moment, she floated in that liminal space between sleep and waking, lost to time and place. This wa

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter 3: First Night

Eve struggled to breathe. It wasn’t because Alex was holding her too tight—though he definitely was. Every second in his arms chipped away at the walls she’d spent years building. He looked just like the photos, just like Sophia had always described. Tall. Broad shoulders. The scent of his cologne,
