The gym inside Eve's estate held nothing but silence and the heavy, rhythmic thud of bare knuckles against leather.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

No wraps. No mask. Sweat ran into her eyes and stung there, and she didn't slow down to wipe it away. Every strike carried a chaotic, volatile charge she couldn't quite bleed out of her system no matter how hard she hit. The raid should have given her peace. She'd dismantled Marcus's operation, stared down his decoy's terrified face, proven beyond any doubt exactly who still owned this war.

Instead her head stayed entirely, infuriatingly full of him.

Some things are better left unknown, Eve.

Valentino's voice looped in her ears on a track she couldn't shut off, drowning out every tactical thought she tried to force to the front. She could still feel the phantom pressure of his fingers locking around her wrist in that penthouse room, immovable, deliberate. He'd used her real name. Not Viper. Not the Ice Queen. Eve — a name she hadn't handed to anyone outside her own squad in longer than she could easily measure.

She threw a vicious right hook that sent the bag swinging wild against its chain, then stopped, breathing hard, forehead pressed to the cool leather. She hated this particular flavor of vulnerable. Hated that a masked stranger had found a gap in armor she'd spent years reinforcing and left her feeling this thoroughly unmoored. He knew things about her past that she couldn't access on her own. He knew about Italy. And instead of handing over a single useful answer, he chose riddles in the dark, filling her head with wanting instead of truth.

"You're going to break your knuckles hitting it like that."

She snapped around fast, hand darting toward a waistband that held nothing tonight but training gear.

Aria stood in the doorway, arms crossed, eyes tracking the split skin across Eve's knuckles and the tight, suffocating line of her jaw. "Ryan finished combing the data we pulled before we torched the safehouse. Found fractured routing numbers tied to the shadow network." A beat, deliberate. "They trace back to Specter."

The name cut clean through everything else in Eve's head. Specter. The phantom architect behind the Board's entire treasury. Her actual target, buried somewhere underneath every smaller fight she'd been picking since coming home. The one person who might hold the blueprint to whatever program had carved the hole in her own memory in the first place.

"Did you trace them?" Her voice dropped automatically into its coldest register.

"Trying." Aria watched her carefully, the way she'd taken to doing more often lately. "But the encryption's nothing we've seen before. Layered behind corporate firewalls thick enough to belong to a government. Whoever's actually running Specter's accounts is hiding behind infrastructure worth billions. Real infrastructure. Real audits. Real shareholders somewhere, probably having no idea what's running underneath their own company."

Eve turned back to the bag, eyes narrowing as something cold and unwelcome started assembling itself in the back of her mind. A billion-dollar infrastructure. A shadow network with no visible seams. A masked man who moved like smoke and carried himself with the unmistakable authority of someone who already owned considerably more of the world than he let on.

The truth isn't a prize, Eve. It's a cage.

Was Valentino protecting her from something. Or was he protecting something from her — steering the Ice Queen's attention anywhere except toward the one throne she actually needed to see clearly? Every possessive touch, every dark half-answer, could just as easily be strategy dressed up as intimacy. He'd been filling her mind with shadow for weeks now. She was only just beginning to wonder whether that had ever been an accident.

"Tell Ryan to double the scrapers." Her voice came out dead level as she caught the swinging bag and forced it still with one hand. "Cross-reference Specter's accounts against every major European tech and shipping conglomerate on record. If she's hiding behind a billionaire's empire, I will tear that empire down to the studs to find her."

Aria nodded and turned to go, then paused in the doorway. "Viper. You've been bare since that alley."

Eve caught her own reflection in the mirrored wall — face fully exposed, sharp and unyielding, nothing left between her and the room anymore.

"Good," she said quietly, to the space Aria had already left behind. "Let them see me. Let *him* see me. The mask is gone. I'm done playing by his rules."

She reached for her water bottle, mind already locking onto a collision course she could feel building somewhere just past the horizon. Valentino wanted her doubting herself, wanting him, distracted by riddles instead of answers. Fine. If he wouldn't hand her the truth, she'd go find Specter herself, and drag every last shadow he was hiding behind out into the light along with her.

Rain that had threatened the city all morning finally broke loose, lashing hard against the reinforced windows of Eve's command center. The steady drum of water against glass was the only sound in the room besides the low hum of cooling fans running behind the server racks stacked along the far wall.Eve stood at the central tactical table, palms flat against the glowing digital map beneath them. Simple black tactical turtleneck, hair pulled back into a stark, practical braid. No mask. Her face stayed fully exposed to her own squad now, the faint purple bruise along her jaw — a souvenir from Marcus — sitting there like a grim little medal for services rendered. Her body was in the room. Her mind hadn't fully left that blue-shadowed bedroom yet, still tangled somewhere in the memory of a heavy frame shadowing hers, a gravelled voice murmuring things that made her pulse spike against her own better judgment. Some things are better left unknown, Eve.She closed her eyes briefly, jaw tigh

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty-Nine: The Edge of the Cage

Midnight over Lake Como sat thick and airless, the water gone black as poured ink. Sophia moved down the stone terrace steps like something that had learned a long time ago how to be quiet, bare feet silent against cold marble, timed precisely to a lull she'd spent three days confirming in the surveillance rotation. The main loops cycled on their standard automated pattern this late. She'd watched them do it every night this week, patient as a held breath, waiting for tonight. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Her face stayed dead calm regardless — the one skill Specter had never once let atrophy, no matter how many other pieces of herself she'd had to bury to survive this long. She reached the dock. The mahogany speedboat swayed gentle against its bumpers, patient as everything else tonight. She stepped aboard and worked the mooring knots loose with fingers that didn't shake, resisting the pull to start the engine early. Better to let the current carry her out first, silent, away

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty-Eight: The Cracking Foundation

The afternoon sun began its slow descent behind the jagged peaks ringing Lake Como, dragging long, blood-colored shadows across the floor of Sophia's private dressing room. The villa had gone quiet in that particular way it always did in the hour before dinner — the distant, unbothered lap of water against the docks the only sound loud enough to notice.Sophia stood before her vanity, fingers idly tracing the gold leaf bordering the mirror. On the surface she was the picture of serene, unhurried elegance. Underneath her skin, something cold and sharp had started screaming, and she was having considerably more trouble than usual convincing it to stay quiet. It had started with something almost too small to register. An hour earlier, walking the manicured gardens with Lila, she'd dropped a piece of misinformation the way she'd dropped a hundred others before it — casual, offhand, buried inside a longer sentence about nothing. She'd mentioned, idly, that she was considering moving a port

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty-Seven: The Golden Mirage

The private wing of the city estate stayed quiet as the afternoon sun dipped lower, casting long, sharp shadows across polished floorboards. Valentino stood before the small mirror in his personal bathroom, isolated from the staff and security detail moving through the grounds outside — the one room in the house where no one else was permitted to interrupt him mid-transformation.With a practiced, fluid motion, he pinched a thin, silver filament free from his right eye. He blinked against the sterile sting of saline, and as his lid opened, a brilliant golden iris caught the last of the window light. He repeated the motion with the left, dropping both contact lenses into their small plastic case. Without the silver tint concealing his gaze, the sharp, aristocratic lines of his face belonged entirely to Alex — the billionaire master of an estate that had absolutely nothing to do with masks or safehouses on paper.A quiet knock rattled the bathroom doorframe. Luca stepped into the thresh

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty-Six: The Reckoning

Cold night air bit sharp against Eve's bare face as she slipped through the perimeter gates of her estate. She hadn't put the mask back on. She wasn't sure, walking through those gates, that she ever would again. Her skin still carried a toxic heat, a lingering echo of hands and whispers and a wall he'd refused to let her past no matter how far she'd pushed. There was a raw, jagged friction sitting under her ribs now — not quite anger, not quite anything else she had a clean name for — fueled by the simple, infuriating fact that he apparently knew things about her own history that she couldn't reach on her own.The moment she stepped into the command room, the heavy silence shattered.Aria rose instantly from the weapons locker, eyes scanning Eve's disheveled suit and bare face. Ryan's fingers stilled over his keyboard. Mia lowered her drone controller without a word."Where the hell were you, Viper?" Aria's voice carried equal parts anger and real worry. "Comms were dead. No signal f

Rain pounded the cemetery, washing the gravel paths into muddy rivers. Eve just couldn’t make herself walk away. Not yet.Now it

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter 6: Flickering Doubts

Eve paced the master bedroom, the thick carpet swallowing her footsteps. The storm had finally blown past, but it left behind a heavy, unnatural silence pressing in on the windows. Alex left her with a kiss on the forehead and a promise—he’d take care of Marcus. Whatever that meant. She could still

Three days drifted past, dissolving into a haze of silk sheets, whispered half-truths, and the subtle choreography of deception. The mansion breathed with hidden life, and Eve, ever watchful, adapted to its pulse. She fell in step with the staff’s daily rituals—the clatter of breakfast trays at eig
