Afternoon sun filtered through the leaves of the park near Eve's modest apartment, dappled light spreading across the picnic blanket she'd spread out on the grass. She sat cross-legged, a light sweater over her shoulders, sketching idly while conversation hummed easy around her. For the first time in months, the weight on her chest felt lighter — not gone, but bearable, the kind of ache that had learned to sit quietly instead of screaming for attention. The visits with Elena had become something close to joyful lately, the steady money ensuring comfort and real progress. Today, though, wasn't about any of that. Today was about reconnecting with pieces of her old life that had nothing to do with villas, or billionaires, or secrets that could get someone killed.

Aria lounged beside her, legs stretched long, working through a bottle of iced tea. Her usual hard edges had softened into something like a grin as she tossed a grape into her mouth. "You're actually smiling today, Evie. About time. That whole Italian mess really knocked the light out of you for a while."

Eve looked up from her sketch of the park fountain, smiling faintly. "It's getting easier. Having you back helps. And the new place — it doesn't feel like I'm always checking over my shoulder anymore."

Before Aria could answer, two familiar figures crossed the grass, cooler and snack bag in hand. Mia waved enthusiastically, curls bouncing, jeans still paint-splattered from whatever she'd been working on that morning — a fellow artist from Eve's leaner years, someone who'd drifted off during the hardest stretch and found her way back through Aria's quiet persistence. Behind her, Ryan ambled up in a faded band shirt and permanent five-o'clock shadow, a steady presence from the old neighborhood who'd helped with odd jobs back when rent money meant the difference between staying and not.

"Finally! The queen returns." Mia dropped onto the blanket and pulled Eve into a hug. "Aria said you were back and laying low after some big adventure. We demanded details. Or at least decent snacks."

Ryan set the cooler down with a chuckle, offering a gentle side hug. "Good to see you, Eve. You look — different. Good different. Stronger. What's the story? Aria mentioned something about Europe."

Eve caught Aria's eye, got the small, reassuring nod back, and settled into the version of the truth they'd agreed on — no Voss empire, no switch, no Marcus, nothing that could get any of these three people hurt for knowing too much. "Wild chapter," she said, taking a soda from Ryan. "I took a job helping manage things for a wealthy family overseas. Learned a lot — about art, about how complicated the world can get when there's real money involved. But I missed this. Real people. Simple days."

Mia's eyes lit up. "Art? Tell me everything. I've been doing freelance illustration — nothing fancy, but it covers the bills. We should collaborate sometime. You always had that eye for light."

They settled in properly after that, unpacking sandwiches and fruit, conversation drifting easily between old memories and current lives. Aria told a story about a mechanic shop disaster that had everyone laughing within a minute. Ryan complained good-naturedly about a demanding client before offering, almost too casually, to help install better locks at Eve's building. "After what Aria mentioned about some shady types sniffing around, better safe than sorry." His eyes held more concern than his tone let on.

Eve felt something loosen in her chest that Italy's polished world had never once managed to reach. These were her people — not the elegant women from the Como café circle, not the commanding weight of a man with gold eyes and a whole empire behind him, just friends who'd known her before any of it, before she'd ever had to borrow someone else's life to survive her own. Mia passed the sketchpad around, and soon they were all doodling ridiculous cartoons, laughing hardest at Ryan's genuinely terrible attempt at drawing Aria's profile.

"You've changed, though," Mia said later, tilting her head to study her properly. "Not in a bad way. There's a quiet confidence now. Like you've seen something that put the rest of it in perspective."

Eve traced a finger over her sketch, over the lake she still sometimes dreamed about without meaning to. "I have. That job showed me what real power actually looks like up close, and exactly how fragile it all is underneath. I thought I wanted that world once. Coming home to Mom — to this — turned out to be what I actually needed." She didn't mention the golden eyes, or the guilt that still surfaced most nights, or the switch, or Marcus's men in an alley that Aria had already handled once. None of that belonged here.

Aria squeezed her shoulder. "You deserve the peace, Evie. We've got you now. No more disappearing acts."

Ryan raised his soda in a small toast. "To old friends and new chapters. Whatever happened over there — you're here. That's what actually matters."

The afternoon stretched on, lazy and unhurried — a halfhearted card game, stories about people they'd all lost touch with over the years, loose plans for a low-key dinner soon. Mia proposed an art walk downtown the following weekend. "Just us, cheap wine, terrible local paintings. It'll be perfect."

Eve agreed, feeling the old threads of her life weaving carefully back together, one ordinary afternoon at a time. As the sun dropped lower and shadows stretched long across the grass, they packed up. Ryan walked partway home with her and Aria, ever the protective one. "Seriously, Eve — anything feels off, you call me. Day or night."

Back at the apartment later, once Aria had headed out on an errand and Eve had checked in with Elena over video call, she sat on the narrow balcony with tea slowly going cold in her hands. The reconnection had done something for her that nothing else in months had quite managed — simple laughter, real concern, not a single hidden agenda in the whole afternoon. Aria, Mia, Ryan. The stability she'd been craving without knowing how to ask for it since the moment she'd stepped off that plane.

But as twilight settled properly over the rooftops, her thoughts drifted, inevitably, back across an ocean. Gold eyes across a breakfast table. Rose gardens she'd never walk again. The particular way he used to hold her like letting go wasn't an option he was willing to consider. Sophia had reclaimed all of it now — the villa, the empire, the man — her true nature and whatever she and Marcus had built together buried under a version of events only a handful of people would ever know the truth of. Eve wondered, not for the first time, whether Alex had started noticing the difference yet. Whether the cold distance under Sophia's polish had begun cracking the illusion apart from the inside, the way ice does before it finally gives.

For now, though, Eve turned her attention back to what she actually had. Elena's health kept improving, week over week, thanks to money that would never trace back to a lake she'd never see again. Her friends were back in her orbit, exactly where they belonged. Marcus's reach had been beaten back once already, at least for the moment, with Aria's fists doing what the police couldn't have managed in time. She picked her sketchbook back up, and this time drew not the Italian lake but the park fountain surrounded by familiar, easy faces — Aria's determined grin, Mia's restless energy, Ryan's steady, unbothered smile.

The ashes of everything she'd wanted once had finally cooled into something quieter and, in its own way, sturdier: acceptance, real friendship, and the slow, patient work of rebuilding a life that had never needed a borrowed name to be worth living.

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty: Quiet Gathering

Valentino spent the morning inside his private estate on the edge of the city — a different estate from Eve's, quiet and well-hidden behind high walls and thick trees, chosen specifically because it sat close enough to the center of things without ever risking overlap with anything she might recognize. He moved through the rooms without his mask, without the cap, face bare only within these walls. No one else was permitted inside except Dario, the one man he trusted enough to let see him unguarded. He drank coffee at the large wooden table near the window, the morning light doing something good for him that he rarely let himself notice out loud. Dario had left a stack of papers — small reports on money trails and old contacts, nothing dramatic, just the patient accumulation that actually won this kind of game. Valentino made notes in a plain notebook as he read. Gathering information was simply his daily work now. Slow. Careful. The only kind of work that ever actually held up under p

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Fifty-Nine: Return to Ice

Eve decided it was time to go home. New York had given her pieces — more than she'd expected, and fewer than she needed — but the real fight waited back where her squad, her company, and the quiet remains of her ordinary life were all still holding steady without her. She packed her small bag in the hotel room early the next morning, the black mask staying on the entire time, soft fabric fitted snug over everything but her eyes. She checked herself once in the mirror before leaving. Eyes sharp. Everything else hidden. The mask had become her armor after the park, after his hands, after the particular way he'd made her feel exposed without ever once seeing her face. It kept Valentino from reading her. It kept everyone from reading her, which, this morning, felt like exactly the point. The car ride to the airport drew a few stares — a woman in a tailored black suit and a full face mask tended to do that — but no one asked questions, and security passed her through with barely a second l

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Fifty-eight: Familiar Shadows

Eve put the mask on before she left the hotel room, and something about the act steadied her in a way she hadn't expected. Black fabric, soft and close-fitting, covering everything but her eyes. She rarely wore it — Viper had never needed a mask before, not when the Ice Queen's stillness did the same work in daylight — but tonight the city felt full of eyes she didn't want looking back at her, and the mask gave her somewhere to stand behind while she found out exactly what she was dealing with. The lead on Valentino Voss had come in clean and specific, and she'd decided, deliberately, to run it down alone. No squad tonight. Ryan was three thousand miles away nursing a latte and a pixelated nostalgia trip. Mia had dirt under her nails and an herb garden to tend. Aria was somewhere sweating out a version of peace in a private gym. This conversation, whatever it turned into, belonged to her alone. The park sat tucked between two towers, a small green wound in the middle of all that glass

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter fifty-seven: Fractured Quiet

Morning light filtered softly through the tall windows of the glass tower, casting long, patient shadows across Eve's minimalist office. She sat at her desk in a crisp black suit, the Ice Queen fully in her element, working through quarterly reports with a calm that felt, for once, entirely unforced. No urgent alerts. No squad briefings waiting to interrupt her coffee. Just the steady rhythm of legitimate work — client proposals approved, risk assessments signed off, a polite nod exchanged with Thomas Hale when he dropped off the updated Mediterranean files without lingering longer than necessary. The staff moved around her with their usual sharpened efficiency, whispers of the Ice Queen's in a rare quiet mood today drifting through the halls like something they weren't quite sure they were allowed to say out loud. Eve allowed herself one small indulgence — a single black coffee, sipped slowly while she watched the skyline shift with the climbing sun. For once, the weight of the progr

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Fifty six : The Blade in the Shadows

In the damp, subterranean quiet of the estate garage, Eve checked her gear with mechanical precision. Around her, the squad moved in silent, rehearsed sync, like extensions of her own will. The black tactical vest sat heavy against her frame—a familiar second skin whose weight grounded her firmly in the brutal reality of the present. She adjusted the suppressor on her sidearm with practiced ease, feeling the cold steel click smoothly into place, before tightening the tactical harness across her chest. Every check, every pull of a strap, was an automatic ritual forged through years of ingrained habit. Yet beneath the muscle memory, her mind was far from empty.Memories of her life some months ago drifted into her thoughts—quiet, late-night dinners with Alex in the heart of the city, the simple, terrifying joy of being seen and held without the crushing weight of a covert program hanging over her head. In the past, those thoughts would have compromised her focus. Tonight, they fueled

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Fifty-Five: Veils of Deception

The Lake Como villa basked in late afternoon light, terrace doors open to the breeze off the water. The woman calling herself Sophia moved through the space with fluid, practiced grace — the real Sophia, returned at last from years spent maneuvering in the shadows of her own family's fortune, the Italian fire having handed her the exit she'd needed the moment Alex's evidence had started closing in around her. She hadn't lit that match herself. She hadn't needed to. She'd simply understood, faster than anyone else in that burning house, exactly what the chaos could still do for her — and she'd used it, cleanly, to vanish from a life about to collapse and rebuild herself into someone with nothing left to answer for.She had needed Alex, at first, for money and cover — a calculated anchor while her resources ran thin and her name stayed radioactive. Now she maintained this quiet lakeside peace as something closer to her own, behaving as naturally as she could manage while she worked her

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter 6: Flickering Doubts

Eve paced the master bedroom, the thick carpet swallowing her footsteps. The storm had finally blown past, but it left behind a heavy, unnatural silence pressing in on the windows. Alex left her with a kiss on the forehead and a promise—he’d take care of Marcus. Whatever that meant. She could still

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter 5: Shadows of Truth

Three days drifted past, dissolving into a haze of silk sheets, whispered half-truths, and the subtle choreography of deception. The mansion breathed with hidden life, and Eve, ever watchful, adapted to its pulse. She fell in step with the staff’s daily rituals—the clatter of breakfast trays at eig

  • Ashes Of Desire     Chapter 4: Cracks in the Facade

Eve woke tangled in sheets that didn’t belong to her, the unfamiliar softness cocooning her limbs. The morning sun, bold and intrusive, leaked through gauzy curtains, painting the room in gold. For a moment, she floated in that liminal space between sleep and waking, lost to time and place. This wa

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter 3: First Night

Eve struggled to breathe. It wasn’t because Alex was holding her too tight—though he definitely was. Every second in his arms chipped away at the walls she’d spent years building. He looked just like the photos, just like Sophia had always described. Tall. Broad shoulders. The scent of his cologne,
