The narrow cobblestone streets of the small town above Lake Como hummed with evening life as the sun dipped low, throwing long shadows across buildings that had stood since long before anyone currently alive had a stake in this story. A lone rider on a black motorcycle cut through the traffic with a precision that had nothing to do with being late for dinner — full helmet, dark clothing, gloves, moving through the crowd like something that had learned a long time ago how to be forgotten the moment it passed.

No one paid the rider any mind until three vehicles approached from the opposite direction, aimed unmistakably at the road leading up toward the Voss villa. Inside, armed men had been sent to probe the estate's defenses and bring back whatever intelligence they could gather for something bigger still being planned.

The motorcycle accelerated without warning, weaving between cars with a control that looked less like skill and more like instinct. In one fluid motion the rider drew level with the lead vehicle and put two silenced rounds through the open window. The driver slumped forward against the wheel. The other cars scattered, tires screaming against old stone. The rider braked hard, spun, and opened fire again — not wild, not desperate, just cold and exact, glass and rubber giving way in quick succession. One gunman managed to return fire, but the rider had already moved, dodging with the kind of timing that came from having done this more than once before. Within a minute it was over — wrecked cars, neutralized men, and a rider vanishing down a side alley just as sirens began climbing the hills in the distance.

No identity. No trace. Only the aftermath, and the quiet, unsettling sense that something had just protected the villa without asking permission or leaving a name behind to thank.

Back at the estate, Eve knew nothing of the violence that had just been spent, unknowingly, in her name. She'd spent the afternoon turning over her conversation with Lila, the fragile new alliance offering a little more room to breathe even as everything else kept tightening around her. As evening approached, Giuseppe arrived at the master suite with a large, elegant box and a smile that suggested he already knew exactly what was inside.

The gown was deep emerald silk, the kind of color that seemed to hold the lake's own dusk light inside it. It fit as though it had been made for no one else, matched by heels and jewelry laid out with the same careful precision. A note rested on top in Alex's handwriting: *Wear this tonight. I have a surprise for you.*

When Alex came home from his meetings, he was waiting in the foyer in a tailored black tuxedo, and the moment Eve appeared at the top of the stairs, he went completely still. His eyes tracked every inch of her on the way down, something unguarded breaking loose behind them.

"You look like something I don't deserve to be standing next to," he said, voice low. "Every man in that room is going to envy me tonight. Only I get to actually hold you."

Heat crept up her neck, and she swatted lightly at his good arm. "You're impossible. If you keep this up I'll never make it out the front door."

He laughed, low, catching her hand and pressing his mouth to her knuckles. "Then let's go before I change my mind about sharing you with anyone at all." He opened the car door with easy, old-world manners, then produced a bouquet of deep red roses before she'd even settled into her seat. "For the most striking woman in Italy."

The drive to the lakeside gala passed in soft conversation and lingering glances. The hall, when they arrived, was already alive with well-dressed couples from across Europe, chandeliers throwing gold light over polished floors. The room seemed to catch its breath the moment they walked in — heads turning, a ripple of whispers following the commanding billionaire and the wife who never quite left anyone's attention once she'd claimed it.

Alex kept a hand at her waist as they moved through the crowd, exchanging pleasantries with a dozen strangers before he leaned down. "I need ten minutes with a business contact. Stay where I can see you." A brush of his mouth against her temple. "I won't be long."

Almost the instant he stepped away, a tall man with sharp features and an easy, confident smile approached. "Signora Voss, I presume. Matteo Rossi — old friend, occasional rival, in the energy sector. It's a pleasure to finally meet the woman who managed to catch someone as untouchable as Alex."

Eve smiled and introduced herself as Sophia, and they slid into light conversation. Matteo had a quick, self-deprecating wit, and a story about a failed deal in Rome that pulled a real laugh out of her before she could catch herself. When the music shifted into something slower, he offered his hand.

"One dance, signora. For old times' sake, before Voss claims you back."

She hesitated only a moment before accepting.

They moved well together, Matteo charming without ever crossing into anything improper, but halfway through the song a hand landed firmly on his shoulder. Alex stood there, expression dark, unreadable in a way that made the temperature of the room seem to drop half a degree.

"I believe this dance is mine."

Matteo stepped back, smirking faintly. "Of course. No one keeps anything from Voss that he's decided is his." He inclined his head to Eve. "A pleasure, signora."

Alex pulled her in immediately, holding her closer than the music strictly required, his stare tracking Matteo across the room even as they began to move. "You seem to make friends quickly, wherever we go," he murmured against her ear.

She looked up at him, a teasing edge slipping into her voice. "Jealous? He was just being polite. You're the one who left me standing there alone."

His mouth found the shell of her ear, voice dropping into something darker. "Jealous doesn't begin to cover it. Every man in this room wants something that belongs to me. You're mine, Evelyn — only mine. Test that again tonight, and I'll make sure everyone watching understands exactly who you go home with."

A shiver ran through her, cheeks warming under the weight of his tone. He didn't loosen his hold as the music swelled, spinning her once before drawing her flush against his chest, his hand splayed wide against the small of her back. "You have no idea what this dress is doing to me," he said against her temple. "Every time you smile at someone else, I want to drag you out of this room and remind you exactly whose bed you're sleeping in tonight."

She laughed under her breath, tapping his chest lightly. "You're insufferable tonight."

He grinned, though the expression didn't quite reach his eyes, which stayed fixed somewhere over her shoulder. Across the room, Matteo lifted a glass in a small, mocking toast. Alex's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly before he bent to murmur, "Smile at him all you like. My hands are the only ones with any claim on you. Tonight, and every night after."

When the song ended, he didn't let her go — just guided her toward a quieter corner instead, ignoring the curious glances that followed them the whole way. He tilted her chin up and kissed her there, brief but unmistakably a claim laid down in front of witnesses. When he pulled back, his voice had gone rough. "You're mine, Sophia. Don't forget it."

She flushed deeper, heart hammering from the display as much as from the raw need underneath it. Matteo tried once more, later, for a bit of easy conversation, but a single look from Alex was enough to send him elsewhere. The rest of the night dissolved into music and low laughter and Alex's hand never quite leaving her waist, every dance a little more possessive than the one before, every whispered promise a preview of what waited for them back at the villa.

By the time they left, the night air had cooled against her bare shoulders. Alex kept one hand on her thigh the entire drive home, thumb tracing slow, deliberate circles that had nothing patient about them. Back at the villa, he carried her upstairs over her half-hearted protest about his shoulder, ignoring the knowing looks Giuseppe and Luca exchanged in the hallway.

In their room he set her down and stepped back just far enough to look at her properly, gown and all. "You were the most beautiful thing in that entire hall," he said. "And every inch of you belongs to me." He kissed her again, deeper this time, demanding rather than asking.

He undressed her slowly despite everything in his hands insisting on speed, the emerald silk pooling at her feet like something poured rather than removed, and when he finally laid her back against the sheets, his mouth followed the same path his eyes had traced all evening — patient, thorough, determined to leave no part of her untouched by the end of it. She arched into him, fingers threading through his hair, and when he finally joined their bodies, it was with the same unhurried possessiveness that had colored the whole night, each slow thrust punctuated by something murmured too low to fully catch, half endearment, half warning.

"Say you're mine," he breathed against her throat, hips rolling deep and deliberate. "Say it like you meant it on that dance floor."

"Yours," she gasped, nails dragging down his back as the rhythm built past anything careful, "only yours," and meant it with a completeness that frightened her more than the lie ever had.

They came apart together, her voice breaking on his name in the dark, and afterward he held her against his chest with a tenderness that felt like the other half of everything possessive that had come before it — as if claiming her and cherishing her had never been two separate things to him at all.

The threats from Marcus, from Sophia, from whatever waited beyond the calm water outside their window, hadn't gone anywhere. But for tonight, wrapped in his arms with the emerald dress crumpled somewhere on the floor, Eve let herself believe, one more time, that the illusion could hold a little longer.

Somewhere beyond the estate walls, a stretch of road near town sat quiet under police tape and flashing lights, three wrecked cars and the men inside them the only evidence that anything dangerous had come close to this house tonight at all — and no one at the villa would learn a single thing about it before morning.

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty-one: Unmasked Moment

Eve walked through the quiet streets near the old warehouse district as evening settled over the city, the sky gone deep orange bleeding into purple, street lamps flickering on one by one like the city was slowly remembering itself. A solid tip had put Valentino back in this stretch of blocks, and her black mask sat tight against her skin, familiar now in a way that unsettled her more than the mask itself ever had. Her suit was sharp, her hair pulled back tight beneath the fabric's edge, and she moved with the particular purpose of a woman who had run out of patience for half-answers.The squad kept their distance without her needing to ask twice. Aria waited two blocks back. Mia monitored from a rooftop with a small drone tucked low against the skyline. Ryan tracked signal traffic from a parked van. She'd told them plainly this confrontation was hers alone. The pull toward Valentino had grown too strong, too persistent, to keep circling politely. She needed real answers this time. No

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty: Quiet Gathering

Valentino spent the morning inside his private estate on the edge of the city — a different estate from Eve's, quiet and well-hidden behind high walls and thick trees, chosen specifically because it sat close enough to the center of things without ever risking overlap with anything she might recognize. He moved through the rooms without his mask, without the cap, face bare only within these walls. No one else was permitted inside except Dario, the one man he trusted enough to let see him unguarded. He drank coffee at the large wooden table near the window, the morning light doing something good for him that he rarely let himself notice out loud. Dario had left a stack of papers — small reports on money trails and old contacts, nothing dramatic, just the patient accumulation that actually won this kind of game. Valentino made notes in a plain notebook as he read. Gathering information was simply his daily work now. Slow. Careful. The only kind of work that ever actually held up under p

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Fifty-Nine: Return to Ice

Eve decided it was time to go home. New York had given her pieces — more than she'd expected, and fewer than she needed — but the real fight waited back where her squad, her company, and the quiet remains of her ordinary life were all still holding steady without her. She packed her small bag in the hotel room early the next morning, the black mask staying on the entire time, soft fabric fitted snug over everything but her eyes. She checked herself once in the mirror before leaving. Eyes sharp. Everything else hidden. The mask had become her armor after the park, after his hands, after the particular way he'd made her feel exposed without ever once seeing her face. It kept Valentino from reading her. It kept everyone from reading her, which, this morning, felt like exactly the point. The car ride to the airport drew a few stares — a woman in a tailored black suit and a full face mask tended to do that — but no one asked questions, and security passed her through with barely a second l

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Fifty-eight: Familiar Shadows

Eve put the mask on before she left the hotel room, and something about the act steadied her in a way she hadn't expected. Black fabric, soft and close-fitting, covering everything but her eyes. She rarely wore it — Viper had never needed a mask before, not when the Ice Queen's stillness did the same work in daylight — but tonight the city felt full of eyes she didn't want looking back at her, and the mask gave her somewhere to stand behind while she found out exactly what she was dealing with. The lead on Valentino Voss had come in clean and specific, and she'd decided, deliberately, to run it down alone. No squad tonight. Ryan was three thousand miles away nursing a latte and a pixelated nostalgia trip. Mia had dirt under her nails and an herb garden to tend. Aria was somewhere sweating out a version of peace in a private gym. This conversation, whatever it turned into, belonged to her alone. The park sat tucked between two towers, a small green wound in the middle of all that glass

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter fifty-seven: Fractured Quiet

Morning light filtered softly through the tall windows of the glass tower, casting long, patient shadows across Eve's minimalist office. She sat at her desk in a crisp black suit, the Ice Queen fully in her element, working through quarterly reports with a calm that felt, for once, entirely unforced. No urgent alerts. No squad briefings waiting to interrupt her coffee. Just the steady rhythm of legitimate work — client proposals approved, risk assessments signed off, a polite nod exchanged with Thomas Hale when he dropped off the updated Mediterranean files without lingering longer than necessary. The staff moved around her with their usual sharpened efficiency, whispers of the Ice Queen's in a rare quiet mood today drifting through the halls like something they weren't quite sure they were allowed to say out loud. Eve allowed herself one small indulgence — a single black coffee, sipped slowly while she watched the skyline shift with the climbing sun. For once, the weight of the progr

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Fifty six : The Blade in the Shadows

In the damp, subterranean quiet of the estate garage, Eve checked her gear with mechanical precision. Around her, the squad moved in silent, rehearsed sync, like extensions of her own will. The black tactical vest sat heavy against her frame—a familiar second skin whose weight grounded her firmly in the brutal reality of the present. She adjusted the suppressor on her sidearm with practiced ease, feeling the cold steel click smoothly into place, before tightening the tactical harness across her chest. Every check, every pull of a strap, was an automatic ritual forged through years of ingrained habit. Yet beneath the muscle memory, her mind was far from empty.Memories of her life some months ago drifted into her thoughts—quiet, late-night dinners with Alex in the heart of the city, the simple, terrifying joy of being seen and held without the crushing weight of a covert program hanging over her head. In the past, those thoughts would have compromised her focus. Tonight, they fueled

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter 6: Flickering Doubts

Eve paced the master bedroom, the thick carpet swallowing her footsteps. The storm had finally blown past, but it left behind a heavy, unnatural silence pressing in on the windows. Alex left her with a kiss on the forehead and a promise—he’d take care of Marcus. Whatever that meant. She could still

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter 5: Shadows of Truth

Three days drifted past, dissolving into a haze of silk sheets, whispered half-truths, and the subtle choreography of deception. The mansion breathed with hidden life, and Eve, ever watchful, adapted to its pulse. She fell in step with the staff’s daily rituals—the clatter of breakfast trays at eig

  • Ashes Of Desire     Chapter 4: Cracks in the Facade

Eve woke tangled in sheets that didn’t belong to her, the unfamiliar softness cocooning her limbs. The morning sun, bold and intrusive, leaked through gauzy curtains, painting the room in gold. For a moment, she floated in that liminal space between sleep and waking, lost to time and place. This wa

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter 3: First Night

Eve struggled to breathe. It wasn’t because Alex was holding her too tight—though he definitely was. Every second in his arms chipped away at the walls she’d spent years building. He looked just like the photos, just like Sophia had always described. Tall. Broad shoulders. The scent of his cologne,
