Damien's POV

Sunday morning is the only hour that belongs entirely to us.

Not because the other hours don't... they do, each of them in their specific way. But Sunday morning has a quality that the others don't, a particular density of ordinary that I have come to understand is the most valuable thing I own.

It is eight-fourteen AM.

Esmeralda is asleep.

She sleeps later on Sundays ...not by much, forty minutes perhaps, but the forty minutes matter. I notice it every week, the specific quality

Esmeralda's POVI write the response on a Tuesday morning, not because Tuesday has any particular significance, I have been telling myself I would write it since last Thursday and each day has found a reason to not be the day. Not avoidance exactly, more the particular caution of someone who understands that some words, once sent, cannot be recalled, and who has learned....slowly, at considerable cost to be deliberate about the things she puts into the permanent record. It is seven AM.Damien has taken Margaret Rose for her morning walk...the specific ritual they have developed between themselves, father and daughter, thirty minutes every morning where they move through the neighbourhood and Damien talks to her about whatever is in his head and she looks at things with the focused attention she brings to everything. I watch them leave from the window. Damien with the pram, Margaret Rose's head turning at the first sound of the street, already interested in what the morning has.I com

I notice it every week, the specific quality of her Sunday sleep versus her weekday sleep. Weekday sleep is efficient. She closes her eyes and her body takes what it needs and in the morning she wakes with the same focus she brings to everything. Sunday sleep is different. She settles into it differently. The particular ease of a body that is not expecting anything from the next hour.I leave her sleeping.I go to Margaret .*****She is awake when I open the nursery door. Not crying...she rarely cries in the morning. She wakes and she exa

Lila's POVI arrive seven minutes early and spend four of them standing on the pavement outside the Hale Industries building deciding whether arriving early makes me look eager.I decide it makes me look professional.I go in.The reception is on the thirty-second floor — a space that manages to feel like it belongs to a building without feeling like an office. Good lighting. The particular hum of a room where people are talking about real things rather than performing conversation. I recognize two of the board members from photographs I reviewed after Marcus called.. Dr. Osei, who came up through investment banking before pivoting to board work at forty-two; and Patricia Yuen, whose career trajectory I spent an embarrassing amount of time reading about on Wednesday because I was preparing for the article and absolutely not because I was trying to understand the context Marcus moves in.I get a drink from the server near the door.I look at the room.Marcus is not immediately visible.

lila's POV A phone call from Marcus?...not even a text, a phone call Which is either old-fashioned or deliberate and with Marcus I am beginning to understand that there is no difference between those two things. He does not do accidental things. Everything he does is considered.I am in the middle of something when my phone rings and I see his name and I sit very still for approximately three seconds before I answer."Marcus," I say."Lila." A pause.... brief, functional. "Damien mentioned you're working on a piece about corporate foundation launches. For the business journal."I wrote that piece two months ago.Damien mentioned it to Marcus two months ago.Marcus is calling about it now.I note the timeline and say nothing about it."I finished that piece," I say. "It ran last month.""Right." Another pause. Not embarrassed — recalibrating. "He also mentioned you were starting something new. About women in executive leadership."This is true. I am starting something new about women

Esmeralda's POVThe house is quiet in the way it only gets after nine PM.Margaret has been asleep for an hour, the particular settled sleep of a five-month-old who has exhausted herself completely and is now entirely committed to unconsciousness. I checked the monitor twice. Damien checked it once after me and didn't tell me he was doing it, which is the kind of thing he does that I notice and don't comment on because it is simply him and I have learned that some things don't need words.I am in the kitchen when he comes in.Not looking for anything, standing at the counter with a glass of water I poured twenty minutes ago and haven't touched, reading Julian's letter again. The folded pages are open in front of me. I have read it four times today. Each time I finish I fold it and put it away and then twenty minutes later I take it out again.Damien comes in and sees me and sees the letter and doesn't say anything. He goes to the cabinet. Gets a glass. Pours water. He stands on the ot

JULIAN'S POVVivienne won't stop talking."—and then the caterer said the orchids weren't available in white, so I had to settle for cream, which completely throws off the color scheme for the nursery reveal party—"I'm not listening.I'm watching Esmeralda across the ballroom. She's wearing red. S

ESMERALDA'S POV I can't leave. I know I should. Know I'm only torturing myself by staying. But my feet won't move from this spot on the sidewalk across the street from the building. I watch as more furniture is carried out. The dining table where we hosted our first dinner party. The couch where
