GRACE'S POV

I snapped my head to tell him off for that nickname, but he was already far away. I cussed his long legs and made my way to the office.

When I got to the office, I took my seat and resumed working, my mind taking different turns.

Julia leaned forward. “Ethan from up was here. He was asking for you.” She said, whispering.

“Oh, yes. I just left him out the hall.” I whispered back, giving her a smile.

“I hope you're not in trouble.” She said, concern shining through her eyes.

GRACE’S POVI narrowed my eyes slightly at him, leaning back in my chair. “You’re weird, I hope you know.”He smiled, almost like he took that as a compliment. “You’re just now realizing that?”“No,” I replied dryly. “I’ve known. I’m just now confirming.”He chuckled, resting his elbows on the table. Then, he wriggled his eyebrows at me.Just as I opened my mouth to say something, a worker approached and dropped off two cups of ice cream, making me clamp my mouth shut. There was a cup of vanilla, and of course, cookies and cream.Ethan didn’t waste a second at all. He picked up his spoon and dug in like a man who had been starved for years.I stared at him, amazed. “You couldn’t wait?”He shrugged mid-bite. “I’ve been thinking about this all day.”“The ice cream or the conversation?” I asked, the edge of my lips tilting upwards. He paused, then smirked. “Both.”I exhaled slowly and picked up my spoon. This was going to be a long talk. The ice cream was cold, but it was comforting an

  • Ashes to Dawn    Chapter 50

GRACE'S POV I walked into the parking lot, searching for Ethan. My eyes scanned the area as I slowly walked. After passing a couple of cars, my eyes landed on the young man, watching me silently, with a smile on his face, and sunglasses over his eyes. The smug look on his face as he waved at me, teasingly, made me scoff. “This dude.” I whispered, making my way towards him. When I got close enough, he took off his sunglasses and stuck them in his breast pocket, folding his arms over his chest. “Well, you're not tardy.” He said, looking me over. “What's that supposed to mean? Did you expect me to come late?” I questioned, tilting my head to the side. He nodded his head in response. “Actually, I did expect you to come a little bit late. But here you are, as early as 3 minutes after time can be. You really want to know what I have to say, don't you?” I paused and really looked at him. “Incredulous. You literally told me it was about my life and that it's a matter of urgency. I've

It's nothing much.” She nodded her head and went back to work. As I worked, my mind took different turns, trying to think about different things. I thought about what Ethan had to talk to me about and how urgent it was. I'd guess if he'd heard that I was going to get laid off, but he did say that it wasn't work-related. But what could it be? All we've ever known of each other is work. Soon enough, it was lunch break and one by one, everyone left th

  • Ashes to Dawn    Chapter 48

GRACE'S POV At some point, the room felt too choking to be in, so I stood up and left the office. I didn't know how to feel about the whole thing, which is funny because it wasn't the first office drama. It wasn't the first time colleagues were clearly at it either. As a matter of fact, a couple of months ago, two colleagues had fought fist to fist in front of everyone. I still don't understand what caused the fight, but they got laid off right after. It wasn't their first time anyway. I walked slowly to the bathroom. When I got in, there was just one woman there. She was redoing her makeup, in the mirror, in a very nonchalant way. It was like she didn't really care, but still wanted to look good at the same time.“Hello.” I greeted softly, pushing the door to a stall open. “Hi.” She drawled, not turning around. I nodded and stepped into the stall. I wasn't pressed at all, but I did need to be alone. If I decided to stand outside the stall, without doing anything, it would probabl

  • Ashes to Dawn    Chapter 47

GRACE'S POV The word cut through everything in the air, commanding silence and attention.“I am not going to sit here and be judged by people who don’t even know the full story,” she continued.“Then tell us,” Julia said softly, leaving space for her to speak.Lana looked at her, really really looked at her. And for a very brief moment, something shifted in her eyes, almost breaking. But it was gone just as quick as it appeared in the first place. It was replaced with that same cold composure.“There is nothing else to tell,” she said, voice low and cold.“That’s not true,” Grey said quietly. He just kept the shots coming at her, like a vendetta. Lana slowly turned to him. “What exactly is your problem?” she asked.Grey finally looked up and met her gaze, kept the gaze too. “My problem?” he repeated. Then he shook his head slightly. “I don’t have a problem.” He continued.“Then why are you talking?” She threw her hands in the air. Grey clicked his tongue. “Because someone should.”

  • Ashes to Dawn    Chapter 46

GRACE'S POV The silence that ensued was cold and very surprising. As everyone stared at Grey, he only looked at us for a brief second, shrugged and then looked back at this computer. I was trying to make total sense of what he said, and I'm sure the others were as well. I looked back at Lana, she looked very pale, like a secret she'd spent a long time keeping had been exposed. “Say what now?” Craig asked, almost yelling.Grey shrugged again, almost like he hadn't just said something very shocking. “Lana? What's he talking about?” Julia asked, turning to look at her. Lana, still pale, looked at all of us. She tried to speak, but ended up stuttering. Then, she cleared her throat, “He's lying, obviously. Why would I do that?” The question was directed to Grey.Grey picked up a pen from his table and started drumming with it, an organised and almost distracting beat. “Because you liked the guy, and wanted him, but he was proving to be difficult to conquer. So, when you found out, you
