LOGINClara’s POV
“Is it true?”
Alpha Damien looks at me cautiously as he speaks, expression imperceptible. My heart is racing, veins flooded with adrenaline. I feel like I’m about to lose my mind.
I avert my gaze from his, unable to look him in the eyes. “It is,” I say softly.
Elder Claude grins wickedly. “See? She admits it–”
“Wait.” Alpha Damien’s voice thunders through the hall, gaze still locked on me. “There has to be more to this story. Who is your family, Clara?”
“I–I was adopted!” I stammer out nervously. My first instinct is to protect Layla’s family above all else. “They didn’t know about any of this, and I–I mean, it’s not like I know much more! I don’t even know where I’m from. I just… I’ve been trying to live quietly here. I never meant anyone any harm.”
I’m speaking in a desperate rush now, words spilling past my lips like a rushing river. “And I wanted to tell you sooner, I swear! I just never got the chance…”
“Bullshit!” Elder Claude hisses. “You could be descended from lowlifes, or from rogues–we have no way of knowing! Who adopted you? Who’s responsible for bringing this disgrace upon our pack? Speak now!”
I begin to tremble, but a spark of defiance lights up in me. I shake my head slowly. “I won’t let anything happen to them.”
My gaze drifts back towards Alpha Damien, but I still can’t read him. He seems pensive, lost in thought as I continue to be flooded with panic. Honestly, in a way, his inscrutability is even worse than outright hatred or revulsion.
Because he hasn’t rejected me yet.
So, despite the fear that’s wrapped itself around my brain, I can’t help but hope that maybe–just maybe–we’ve still got a chance.
“I’ve known hybrids like you before,” Elder Claude growls, skewering me with yet another glare. “Vicious, ruthless hybrids, who tried to compensate for their weakness with sheer spinelessness. Yes, I’ve seen what hybrids and rogues and lowlifes have done to villages of innocents. I’ve seen the damage they’ve wrought. And now you–deceptive young thing, just another shameless seductress trying to writhe her way into the position of Luna? Not on my watch. There’s no chance!”
I stare at the ground, shame sinking deep into me with every vile word that Elder Claude spits. I can feel his dangerous gaze on me, the weight of his slimy stare. He’s going to hurt me. He’s going to kill me. Every despicable thing that could happen to a person–it’s going to happen to me.
All because of my stupid, wretched hybrid bloodline.
“I swear I’m not–I’m not like that!” I gasp out, sinking to my knees and clasping my hands together. Tears begin to stream down my face. “Please, the Moonstone pack is my home–it has been my whole life. I’m not a seductress. Please, please, you have to believe me–”
“Shut your mouth, hybrid scum,” Elder Claude cuts in cooly. “Guards! Throw this Omega wretch into the dungeon and have her tortured for her crimes.”
“No!” I cry out, collapsing onto the ground, already trembling as I see the guards beginning to approach me with their weapons raised.
But that’s when Alpha Damien steps into action.
“No one will touch her!” Alpha Damien growls, jaws snapping as he steps between me and the guards.
A wave of relief washes over me as the guards all fall back in an instant. I sob, a broken sound born of fear and desperation.
“This girl is my mate,” Alpha Damien announces evenly, looking Claude dead in the eyes as he continues. “And her bloodline is no crime of hers. I will not betray the Moon Goddess’s blessing over status or bloodline. She will be my mate, for fate wills it as such. Fall back, Elder Claude. This isn’t your decision to make.”
Elder Claude glares at Alpha Damien. “I won’t tolerate this kind of defiance from you, boy,” he snarls, stepping even closer towards him. Despite his age, power radiates off of him, a cold, commanding sort of presence. “I’ve known you to be a lot of things, but I never took you for a fool.”
Damien’s Alpha Aura begins to roll off of him in waves. I stand there frozen in fear, watching as the two men glare at each other dangerously.
“Insult me again and watch what happens,” Alpha Damien hisses. “You’ve always been like a father to me, Elder Claude, and I don’t want to hurt you, but don’t think that means I won’t.”
Elder Claude lets out a crazed, broken laugh, gesturing around frantically. He seems unhinged now, truly pushed past the point of rationality. “She’ll bring nothing but disaster! You’re going to doom us all, you impossibly–”
“ENOUGH!” Alpha Damien roars.
The room falls deathly silent.
I feel faint, like my heart is beating so fast I might pass out.
There’s steel in Alpha Damien’s posture, ice in his eyes as he stalks toward Elder Claude. “I am the Alpha of this pack. I and I alone have the authority to choose my future Luna.”
“No,” Elder Claude says in disbelief.
“The Luna ceremony will be held in three days,” Alpha Damien continues. “Your blessing is no longer important–Clara Brooks will be my Luna regardless.”
Elder Claude’s face darkens at Damien’s words, guilt clawing at my chest. I can’t stand them fighting because of me. Ignoring Marigold’s protests, I force myself to speak.
“Please… don’t argue over me. I know I don’t deserve to be Moonstone’s Luna. I am fine to be a maid—”
“Silence, Omega!” Claude snaps. I flinch, wishing I’d never opened my mouth.
“This discussion is over,” Damien says coldly, taking my hand. “We’re leaving.”
I follow him closely, heart still struggling to grasp what just happened: he truly accepted me as his mate and Luna. I want to believe that’s enough.
But as we step out of the hall, Claude’s furious voice echoes after us—
“You’ll regret this, Damien! She’ll be the death of us all!”
Clara’s POVI can’t believe that just happened. My heart is racing as I rush out of Alpha Damien’s office, silently thanking the Moon Goddess for that opportunity. If Gamma James hadn’t knocked when he did, things might have spiralled out of control. Or. Spiralled even more out of control, I suppose. As I rush back to the maid’s lounge, veins flooded with adrenaline, Damien’s kiss replays in my mind as an endless loop. His breath warm against my neck, that gentle graze of his fingertips, the way every part of me melted into him on pure instinct as he pulled me closer–For a split second, I’d almost given in. I wanted to. Goddess above, I wanted to. Until Marigold had reminded me why I’m really here. ‘You need to complete your mission and get out,’ she urged. ‘Don’t try to go back. Don’t get attached. This can’t last, Clara. Do what you need to do and nothing more.’ She was right, of course, as much as it pains me to admit. Still, as I brush my fingertips along my lips, rememb
Damien’s POV‘How could you?!’My wolf Lucius’ voice reprimands me sharply in my mind, a bitter howl underscoring the words as Anna stares at me like I’m a monster. ‘You fool!’ Lucius continues. ‘If you’re ever going to pull this off, you can’t be losing control like that. And she means too much for you to blow this.’ My heart feels like it’s breaking into a thousand tiny pieces as I look down at Anna, whose face has twisted into an expression of bitter shock and fear. Her lower lip is trembling, eyes wide, and I hate how terrified she looks right now. “I–I’m so sorry,” I say hastily, raising both hands and taking a step back. “I never wanted to–I didn’t mean to…” Anna raises an eyebrow, watching me closely like she’s trying to assess how much of a threat I am right now. “I didn’t mean it!” I blurt out, schooling my expression into one of cool indifference. “I was just so happy to hear you wanted to be my maid again that I got carried away. I’m sorry, Anna..” Anna shakes her hea
Clara’s POV“Excellent.” The word slips past Alpha Damien’s lips smooth as silk, and he smiles as he looks me up and down. “But tell me, Anna. Why the sudden change of heart?” I hesitate. Obviously I can’t tell him I want whatever position makes it easiest for me to drain his heartblood. “Since becoming a maid, I’ve–um–I’ve found… great solace in my work,” I say awkwardly. “And I truly value the friendships I’ve made in this role. Besides, what better work is there than serving my Alpha? Truly, there’s no better vocation out there.” I stare at the ground, unable to look him in the eye as I speak. I can feel Damien’s gaze heavy on me, though, always seeking, always scouring. What does he want from me? “I’m glad to hear it, Anna,” Damien says. He stands up, then, and crosses over to the other side of the desk. Before I can quite process what’s happening he’s right in front of me, that intense stare still boring into me. Damien reaches out slowly, tentatively, deliberately, almos
Clara’s POV“Mind if I sit here?” Rachel’s words pierce through the air cold as ice, and her eyes are gleaming like daggers, eagerly awaiting a response. I clench my jaw. “Not like anyone’s going to stop you.” She shoves her tray in between Layla and I and sits down unceremoniously, lacing her fingers together beneath her chin as she looks me up and down. “You really are ugly,” she says bluntly. “Those scars on your face–not to mention the new ones you’re stuck with now…” her gaze drags along my body, and she smirks. “Just some lowly Omega maid who ended up where she doesn’t belong. I have absolutely no idea how someone as worthless as you could ever manage to deceive Alpha Damien!”“I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about,” I tell her flatly, doing my best to let the words wash right over me.“Sure you don’t,” she spits. “And even despite your cowardly attempts to assassinate our pack’s beloved Alpha, somehow you’re unpunished through it all! More than that, you had A
Clara’s POVWhen I look at Damien, I don’t know what to do with the wave of confusion that floods me. I drugged him. Pressed a knife to his chest. Sunk it into his skin, tried to steal his heartblood–And he doesn’t hate me? He’s not going to kill me. I’m not going to die because of what happened. Is he… misremembering things, somehow? Has he lost his mind? That can’t be possible–the sedative Liam gave me was only supposed to knock him out, it didn't have the potency to cloud his mind. And yet after what I’m sure he’s construing as an assassination attempt, here is he, looking down at me with those wide, warm eyes and asking him if I’ll stay by his side. “Well?” Damien prompts gently with a slight tilt of his head. I do my best to blink my confusion away. “I… I’ll need some time to think about it,” I tell him reluctantly, not wanting him to think I’ve got any ulterior motives. “I’ll try to answer you soon, though.” I don’t really have much choice in the matter. I have to stay fo
Damien’s POVI rush to the hospital as soon as I can, my heart feeling like it’s about to beat out of my chest. I grab Doctor Irwen by the shoulder as I rush through the halls. “Where is she?” I ask frantically. “She’s with Layla in the VIP ward,” Doctor Irwen replies. “In great condition, thankfully. She should make a strong recovery.” “Good,” I breathe out, winding through the halls. When I peer through the window, I can’t help but smile softly at the sight of Clara chatting away with Layla. It fills me with strange nostalgia to see her relaxed–like things are how they used to be, soft and warm and easy. ‘She’s not Clara anymore,’ Lucius reminds me sharply. ‘She’s Anna now. Don’t slip up, or we might lose her again.’ ‘I’m not going to lose her,’ I say firmly. ‘I’m going to be careful this time. I’m going to do this right. Whatever mess she’s tangled up in… I’m going to get her out of it.’ ‘She would never hurt you intentionally,’ Lucius agrees. ‘Someone is controlling her, an
Clara’s POVI tremble as I carry breakfast toward Damien’s bedroom, though I’m not sure if it’s from fear or anticipation. Before knocking, I’d triple-checked my disguise and I know–I know I’m unrecognizable. I have to be. Still, the anxiety gnaws at me, and I nearly drop the platter of food as I k
Clara’s POVAs Rachel strides into Damien’s office, I can’t help but follow. My heart aches so much I can hardly bear it. I know nine months have gone by since I saw Damien last. I know he hates me now. Still, the idea of Damien being with anyone else–the idea of him being with Rachel, of all peop
Rachel’s POV‘What do you need Damien for?’James’ voice is reluctant over the mind link, trepidation curling around the edges. I figure I might as well let him know what I’m doing. It’s all going to come to fruition soon, after all. ‘I’m going to seduce him,’ I tell him bluntly. ‘I’ve waited long
Rachel’s POVSomehow, even though it’s been months since Clara’s death, Damien is still completely obsessed with her. And I can’t stand it one bit. Damien and I have been friends since childhood, and since I'm Beta's daughter, we grew up side by side. Me, Damien, and Gamma James–we were always in
