NYSSA'S POV:

I watched Roman Adams dress up hurriedly, his hand fiddling with his tie, and I stared at him guiltily, wondering if he had any idea that it would probably be the last time I would be working for him.

“Do you need help with the tie?”

He flashed me a smile as I approached, then helped him fix the tie, making sure it aligned with his shirt.

When he tried to kiss me again, I took a step backwards, ducking him purposefully.

“What is it?”

The look he gave me was gentle, fragile even.

I lowered my eyes, then mustering up courage, I managed to look at him.

“What are we doing, Roman?”

He raised an eyebrow inquisitively, an action that indicated he didn't understand my question. I scratched the back of my neck frustratedly as I began to speak again, my voice laced with emotion.

“Yes, Roman, what are we doing? This…” I gestured towards the bed as I continued, “We don't work…”

He grabbed my hand, and for a fleeting moment, I wanted to remain in that position, with him reassur

  • Auctioned To The Highest Bidder   CHAPTER 89

NYSSA'S POV:I watched the plane soar past the city of New York, and I felt a deep longing, as if I was being torn from a part of me and asked to continue moving without backup. Yes, I hated what Roman Adams had done to my life. I hated how he had plucked me from my everyday life and had transformed me into a servant, and then to a personal assistant for him. I hated how he had introduced me to the world of crime, and how knowledgeable I was now. I was no longer the innocent Nyssa Dimitri who had been going to the university with the hopes of becoming a doctor one day. With Roman Adams came the wave of change, the harshness of the underworld and all its counterparts. I had watched a man get killed. I had seen a man tortured. Roman Adams had introduced me to a world which I didn't know existed. “Would you like a drink, Nyssa?”I turned at the sound of Adrian Giovanni's voice, and for the umpteenth time, I questioned my actions and everything I had done to be where I was at that p

  • Auctioned To The Highest Bidder   CHAPTER 88

ROMAN'S POV:“Mr Adams, do you know anybody that would want you dead?”There were thousands of people that wanted Roman Adams, the lord of the Adams family dead. But at the same time, I knew that I would never let the police fight my battles. The perpetrators of the bombing were going to pay. And I wanted to watch them suffer, I wanted to watch the light leave their eyes. I wanted to watch them bleed until I was satisfied. “No, officer.”The bald officer in charge of the case glanced at the younger man who was probably his partner and sighed. He shook his head, then sipped from the cup which contained coffee in front of him. “Mr Adams, luckily for us, the hotel manager and the chairman of the summit that you came to attend in New York have been kind enough to release the footage from the CCTV to aid us in the investigation. Normally, I wouldn't let you see them, but I want you to look at it and tell me if you recognize any of the men here.”The tapes were played on a desktop that l

ROMAN'S POV:I paused when I saw Paul in the middle of the room on a chair, tied up with a cello tape over his mouth to prevent him from speaking. Blood flowed from his head in rivulets, and from his posture, I knew he had put up one hell of a struggle. From the black eye underneath both eyes, I could tell that as usual, he had given whoever had tied him up one hell of a fight before he was subdued. I rushed towards him, tearing the cello tape from his mouth. “What happened, Paul?” The words left my lips in a daze, as if I had not yet come to terms with what was happening. I hadn't. I left the hotel only hours ago, and everything had been alright. Now, I had come back to a burnt room and with my bodyguard beat up beyond recognition? When Paul spoke, the anger was there in his voice, in his eyes and with the way he tried to wriggle from the ropes that bound him. “Three bastards. Three to one. They barged in, held me down before I could even fight properly and took my gun. I managed

  • Auctioned To The Highest Bidder   CHAPTER 86

ROMAN'S POV:A few seconds after the call ended, I was still rooted to the spot, frozen in fact, unable to believe what I had just heard. If anything had happened to Nyssa, I would never forgive myself. There was no-one to blame but myself. If I had paid heed to their advice that we should leave New York as soon as possible, this wouldn't have happened. If I hadn't let my pride and ego get in the way of common sense and logical thinking, the call that had just happened wouldn't have happened. Fred Gatwick, sensing something was wrong, stood up, approaching me hesitantly and in the most cautious of manners possible. “Roman? Are you alright?”His voice brought me back to the present. I was wrong, but there was no need to cry over split milk. I had to do something. “Yes, I am. Something terrible has happened, Fred. I have to go now.”I grabbed my coat which was on the chair I had sitting on, heading for the exit of the rooftop. Fred, astonished, followed me till I got to the door.

ROMAN'S POV:As the Uber drove me through the streets of New York, for the first time, I didn't care about the beautiful scenery, the fashion or whatever was going on by the side of the road. My mind was nowhere near the Uber. It was back in the hotel room, thinking of Nyssa Dimitri, of the woman I called my personal assistant and of everything that had transpired between us in the past twenty four hours. From the way I was angry and upset at the fact that she had danced with Adrian at the award night to when I saw her in just a towel, and knew instantly that I wouldn't be able to bottle up my feelings anymore. It was the best sex I had had in a very long time. Charlene pleased me on the bed, succumbing to my whims and every word I made, depending on me to make the first move, acknowledging the fact that I was in control. I enjoyed it, yes. But with Nyssa, it was different. With her, everything was always different. On the bed, she challenged me. She met my thrust for thrust. S
