Chapter 3

Author: Thousand Cranes
The evening sky hung low and heavy, clouds pressing down over the city. The streets were already thinning out—few pedestrians remained, and roadside vendors were packing up to head home.

At night, Cosa City became a place of danger.

For ordinary people, wandering outside after dark was practically a death sentence.

Ghosts roamed the city once night fell.

Since the invasion of the myriad realms, the southern region of the Dragon Nation bordered the Ghost Realm. Countless wandering spirits and malevolent entities spilled across that boundary, impossible to fully eradicate.

And every night… was their carnival.

As the last sliver of sunlight sank below the horizon, the streetlights flickered to life, casting weak halos of light—like fragile shelters for those who hadn't made it home in time. In truth, they offered little more than false comfort.

The night of revelry had begun.

Cosa City's ghost-hunting squads stood on full alert.

Those caught outside ran in panic, hearts pounding. Miles was no exception.

Since transmigrating here and inheriting this world's memories, he understood all too well how terrifying Cosa City became at night. Even with patrols, safety was never guaranteed.

Cosa City was only a fringe town in the southern region. It had barely a dozen ghost-hunting squads—no more than fifty or sixty people in total.

Protecting an entire city with such numbers was impossible.

That was why nighttime movement was strictly restricted.

A chilling wind swept past.

Miles shuddered.

Ghostly aura.

And not just one—two of them.

He quickened his pace. He had just become an Awakened; dying now would be a cruel joke. Even with an SSS-rank succubus, there was no need to invite trouble.

"Oh my… what a tender little boy. What are you doing out here all alone?"

A soft, teasing voice suddenly whispered in his ear.

Miles froze. Every hair on his body stood on end, as if he'd plunged into an icy abyss.

No presence. No warning. It had appeared behind him out of nowhere—and it spoke human language.

An A-rank ghost?!

At that level, its strength was at least comparable to a Path Master—far beyond what a newly awakened novice like him could handle.

"It's dangerous out here at night," the voice continued sweetly. "Why don't you come home with big sister?"

A severed head floated into view before him. Its features weren't ugly, but being stared at by a disembodied head would terrify anyone.

It was a Headless Ghost.

Ordinary humans no longer satisfied it. Devouring them did nothing to increase its strength.

Its prey now… was Awakened.

Only the essence within the Awakened could sate its hunger.

And Miles—

He was perfect.

In fact, the energy within him felt even richer than the Awakened it had consumed before.

Drool began to drip from its lips.

"Scared stiff, are we?"

Seeing no reaction, the ghost didn't care.

"Then I'll just eat you."

The moment it appeared, Miles had already called for help.

'System, summon the succubus!'

No choice now. He'd planned to wait until he got home, but survival came first.

Just as the ghost lunged, a surge of black wind erupted, blasting it backward.

"What?!"

The Headless Ghost shrieked in shock. It tried to attack again, but a black tail lashed down from above.

The Headless Ghost blocked instinctively, yet was still sent flying.

"Was it you who summoned me… my lord?"

A sultry voice drifted through the air—velvet-soft, sending a shiver down the spine and a heat through the veins.

"A succubus… it's a real succubus…"

Miles stared at the gradually forming silhouette before him, his blood igniting.

The black wind dispersed. A breathtaking woman stood before him.

Her clothing wasn't revealing, yet it invited endless imagination. Her figure was flawless—seductive curves, elegant lines. Curved demonic horns crowned her head, bat-like wings unfurled behind her, and a slender tail swayed lazily.

She was exactly as he had imagined.

Molly studied the man before her, a hint of confusion flickering in her eyes.

So weak. Barely stronger than a fledgling.

He had just awakened, hadn't he? Then how had he managed to summon her?

She couldn't understand it. She had felt the summoning and answered instinctively. But her summoner's strength puzzled her.

Miles cleared his throat, forcing himself into a more composed posture.

"Molly, take care of that Headless Ghost."

The moment she appeared, her name had surfaced in his mind.

There were more pressing matters now. They could figure everything else out later.

"Yes, Master."

Though puzzled, Molly obeyed without hesitation. Her gaze snapped toward the ghost she had just struck away.

The Headless Ghost's expression darkened. It hadn't expected him to be a Summoning Path Awakened.

"A mere demon at the Adept-level? You're courting death!"

In this world, power was divided into levels: Awakener, Initiate, Acolyte, Adept, Master, High Master, Sovereign, Ascendant, Converged, and Perfected.

The A-rank Headless Ghost was at the High Master level—two full levels above Molly. It lunged, ghostly claws tearing through the air.

Molly didn't retreat. She met it head-on.

Miles watched anxiously.

Suddenly, information about Molly appeared before his eyes.

Name: Molly

Race: Demon (Succubus)

Rank: SSS

Level: Adept (5-Star)

Skills: Charm, Lash, Infernal Ray…

XP: 0 ▼

Basic stats—but that small "▼" caught his attention.

Wasn't that supposed to show experience needed to level up?

Why was it hidden?

Curious, he tapped it.

The concealed details unfolded instantly:

Front: 0

Back: 0

Top: 0

Face: 0

Feet: 0

Miles froze.

With years of experience, he understood immediately.

Zero across the board? A completely untouched succubus?

That was… practically a rare treasure.

Wait—when he'd drawn her, hadn't it said Mutated Succubus?

Was this the mutation?

While Miles was still reeling, the battle reached its conclusion.

The Headless Ghost was powerful, but Molly was no ordinary demon. With her SSS rank and unique nature, fighting above her level posed no real issue.

"No… impossible!" With a final, unwilling scream, the Headless Ghost was destroyed—unable to accept its defeat.

But reality was absolute.

"My lord, it's been dealt with."

Molly returned, her aura slightly unsteady. Crossing levels to kill her opponent had taken its toll.

"Th-thanks. You did great."

Miles tried to suppress the restless heat in his veins. As her master, he had to maintain some dignity.

"Good work…"

Just as he was about to say more, his expression shifted.

Several powerful auras were approaching—fast.

The ghost-hunting squad. They had sensed the Headless Ghost's presence and rushed over. After all, an A-rank Headless Ghost could spell disaster for a small city like Cosa City.

"Molly, go back for now. I'll summon you again later."

Miles quickly dismissed her. He wasn't afraid of being seen, but explaining this would be a nightmare. After all, he had just killed a Headless Ghost. In Cosa City, people capable of that could be counted on one hand. He had no intention of ending up in a lab, dissected for study.

The moment Molly disappeared, several figures arrived.

"Are you alright? What are you doing out here at this hour?!"

A woman stepped forward, but her words were cut off by a shocked shout.

"Captain! The ghost… the Headless Ghost is dead!"

"What did you say?!"

Mystique Academy.Three days after Miles's departure, a man strode briskly down the hall."Lyra, what happened to that Grimstead exploration mission? Pull it immediately!"It was a teacher at the academy, James Britton. He was also the staff member responsible for mission management. His tone was sharp and urgent."Mr. Britton, what's wrong with that mission?" Lyra asked, puzzled."This isn't a regular A-rank exploration. It might even be S-rank. According to reliable sources, there are five A-rank ghosts inside Grim's Mountain—and possibly an A-rank Ghost Monarch. That already exceeds the A-rank classification," James said, growing more frantic. "Where is the mission? Why don't I see it? Has someone already accepted it?"Lyra froze.Five A-level ghosts… and a Ghost Monarch? How was that even possible?"Speak! Where did the A-rank mission go?" James pressed."It… it was taken three days ago by a student," Lyra stammered."Taken? By which student? Grim's Mountain is treacherou

The power of the Heaven's Staff techniques alone was enough to suppress the Awakened from other paths—but to truly master them to their peak? That was an entirely different challenge.Miles stared at the skill panel. Proficiency Levels: Entry, Mastery, Perfection, Transcendent.Heaven's Staff Manual (Not Learned)Celestial Command Art (Not Learned)He was momentarily stunned. Learning these two techniques required only 100 summon points.'Only 100 summon points? That's an absolute steal.'Without hesitation, Miles clicked "Learn."The proficiency levels of both Heaven's Staff Manual and Celestial Command Art immediately changed from "Not Learned" to "Entry." But to advance further would cost 1,000 summon points—ten times the initial cost."High prices, huh?" Miles hesitated for a moment, then spent 2,000 summon points to raise both techniques to Mastery. At least now his safety was ensured; if danger arose, he'd have enough time to summon Molly for combat. But when he glanced

"You want them all?"Charlie froze. He had never encountered anyone like Miles. Normally, you pick one, but Miles wanted them all."Not allowed? Fine, then I won't take any," Miles said casually, sliding the Crimson Bride's hand into his as he turned to leave."Since you fancy them all, consider it their good fortune," Charlie said with a smile. He looked at the five girls. "From now on, you are Miles's wives. Serve him well."The five girls nodded obediently, expressionless. The ritual concluded, and Miles returned to his room, preparing for the next phase of his plan. But as he entered, he froze. The same five girls, now in tattered clothes, were waiting inside, ready to obey his command."Damn… they're so eager—more eager than me. Are all women in Grimstead this wild?" Miles muttered, grinning, and lunged forward.Five minutes later, Miles had subdued all five."Trying to use beauty to bind me… but I'm not that kind of man," he declared with feigned righteousness.Though at

Charlie's hand was cold, absolutely devoid of warmth. This was no ordinary hand—like a corpse's.Miles frowned, unease prickling down his spine, as Charlie forcibly led him to the site where they worshiped the well spirit. All the villagers had gathered there, their eyes vacant, faces pale, as if their souls had long since abandoned them.Around the mouth of the well, thick waves of oppressive dark essence surged upward, seeping into the bodies of the villagers, leeching what little life force they had left.By the well stood an ancient woman, easily in her seventies, manipulating something unknown. She wore a bizarre headdress, a strange ceremonial robe, and a fierce, grotesque mask that concealed her face. The old woman chanted something under her breath, an incantation in a language long forgotten.Whether it was the sound or the spell itself, Miles felt a strange connection forming between him and Grim's Mountain, as if the village and its darkness were sensing him.'Could t

The villagers they passed—mostly elderly men and women working the fields—greeted Miles warmly, a stark contrast to the lifeless pallor of those he'd seen earlier."Charlie, you've lived here a long time, haven't you? Haven't you ever thought of leaving?" Miles asked, glancing at the old tile-roofed houses. Outside, the world had high-rises, electric lights, and televisions—but here, it was oil lamps and clay walls."We're self-sufficient here. There's no need to go outside," Charlie shook his head."The outside is full of wandering spirits. It's safer for us to stay here. And even if we wanted to leave… we couldn't." He let out a long sigh."What do you mean by that?" Miles's interest peaked."The village is protected by the well spirit. It keeps other spirits and fiends away, but at a cost—the villagers of Grimstead can never leave, or they'll die instantly," Charlie explained. This was why he had warned Miles not to enter. Once someone steps in, they become part of the village,

Normally, a boss lurked at the deepest part of a dungeon, so if one wanted to find it, the best way was to head further in. The deeper you went, the more thrilling and dangerous it became.Half an hour later, a wisp of smoke drifted lazily in the distance—the scent of cooking fires."Grimstead, the village on Grim's Mountain, must be up ahead," Miles murmured.Based on the task information, he already had some understanding of the area."The mission description says Grimstead is strange… anyone who goes in may never come out. I don't even know if that's true."Miles hesitated for a moment, weighing his options. After thinking it through, he summoned the rest of his creatures."Come out, all of you."All of his remaining A-Rank creatures appeared at once: Ghost Fiend, Headless Ghost, and Water Wraith. The four together—including Crimson Bride—would terrify any passing Awakened."My summon points are running low," Miles muttered, reserving enough for one final summon of Molly—his
