Kiara's POV

The moon was still high when I slipped out of bed. My heart hammered in my chest, and I tried everything in my power to control it. It wasn't working, so I simply decided I was going to let it be. No one had died from a thumping heart as far as I knew.

Not yet.

A cold gust of wind filtered in through the open window. It sent chills down my spine, and also stood as a reminder, that the world outside Darius’ pack was colder, and more dangerous too. The only pro the outside world had over my current location, was freedom. Outside, I didn't have to be be bound by anybody's rules, I wouldn't be forced to be put through trials and tribulations, just to show my worth.

The floor was cold against my bare feet as I crept towards the door. I'd ditched my shoes because I didn't want to risk being heard or followed. My hand grazed the door knob, and automatically, my brain took that as an invitation to go back in time a bit.

He said she'll have to prove herself, or she won't make it to the next moonrise. Hazel's words echoed in my ears. They ignored fear in me, and the note I tried to push it out, the faster it came crashing down on me.

Do you think she'll survive it?

If she wants to live, then she has to.

I shook my head, willing the thoughts to disappear. I was already feeling nervous, and a part of me was starting to second guess all of this, so the last thing I needed was anything weakening my resolve.

I didn't like admitting it, but their conversation had sent a shiver down my spine. If I wanted to live, then I had to. I didn't want to figure out what they'd meant by that, I didn't even want to think about it, not witness it. I couldn't stay here and gamble with my life, not when I didn't know the rules of the game. I didn't even need the rules to know that it would be rigged against me.

I cracked the door open, and the loud squeak that came with it, almost sent me to the land of the dead. Goosebumps made its way to my skin as I snuck a peek at the hallway. It was still and dimly lit by a torch flickering in the far end of the wall. I waited a bit, and when I heard no footsteps, I let out a breath I had no idea I was holding.

Every step I took echoed louder in my head than it did in the hallway. I didn't exactly know where I was going, since I had no memory or clue whatsoever as to how I'd ended up in here in the first place, but I just knew I would know if I found it. Before long, I burst in front of another corridor. It curved outwards, and I felt it deep in my bones that I was on the right track. Just at the end of the corridor, I could faintly make out some steps that led to what I was going to tag the east wing of the pack house. If I could make it past that and the guards that stood guard at the outer pack wall, I was going to find the forest, and I'd be free.

Free.

I allowed my feet carry me down the hall and down the stairs as well. I took them one at a time, and just when I thought everything was going smoothly, a floorboard creaked underneath my feet.

Shit.

I felt the hairs at the back of my neck stand on end. Anxiety gnawed at the pit of my stomach at the prospect of being caught.

Had somebody heard that? What if I hadn't been as sleek as I thought and someone had seen me, or worse, was following me ?

I forced myself to turn slowly, not fully, but just enough to get a glimpse of the space behind me. There was no one there, but somehow I just didn't want to believe it. If I was being followed, then there was every tendency that whoever it was had hidden somewhere and was waiting for me to keep going again, or waiting for me to make a move.

My heart sunk towards my feet, but I sucked it up and continued my journey. Iade extra sure that I didn't make another sound, and before long i reached the final hallway. It led to the back exit, and from my spot here, I could easily make out the slightly open door. My legs ached from the wounds that hadn't already healed, but adrenaline numbed it all up in a second.

I knew for a fact that the pain was going to come back and I double fold, but I was going to deal with it later. All I needed to do was get past this door first.

I inched closer, and just when I thought I was thos close to escaping, it hit me.

Like a punch to the chest, a burning heat spread through my body. It flared through my ribs and wrapped around my lungs. My breaths ceased, and I gasped. My vision blurred too, and I staggered, just to barely catch myself on the wall. A dull aches spread through my head and my vision darkened at the edges.

What the hell was going on?

Pressure, yanked at my core, like I was bonded to something. I couldn't move, couldn't breathe properly, couldn't think either.

I wanted to tell myself that I was imagining it, that none of this was happening and I was only hallucinating, or worse, I was crashing out, but deep down, I knew it was a lie. I'd felt something akin to this, and the moment I realized when, I froze.

I'd felt like this when my wolf whispered the word mate to me

No no no. There was no way this could be happening.

I doubled over, clenching my stomach as the pain intensified. My legs gave out beneath me, and just before my knees hit the floor, I heard it.

The sound of boots approaching behind me. It was slow and deliberate, and for some strange reason, I already knew who it was.

I turned my head around just enough to see him, and even though I had an inkling it was him, I was still shocked. Darius stood behind me, tall and immovable, like he could bend the shadows into his will if he wanted to, like he could bend me if he wanted to, too.

His shirt clung to the hard lines of his body, his black sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The moonlight radiated in his eyes, and even though he exuded pose, danger, and something else, he looked excruciatingly beautiful.

“You really thought you could leave?” He didn't sound surprised to see me. If I didn't know better, I would say he sounded bored. “That it would be easy?”

I didn't answer. I couldn't. My throat felt dry and my body trembled against the wall in shame and a little bit of fear.

“You think running was brave?” He stepped closer, only crouching so he could reach my height. “You made a mistake, rogue.”

“You're not just here to fill space in this pack, rogue.” Something in the way he said it made me shiver. “The test is in three days.”

“What?” I muttered. “What test?”

“Every rogue I've ever soared will be there.” He stared deep into my eyes. “Those who think they deserve a spot in this pack, and you'll fight them all. Physically, mentally. We'll break you open and see what's left.”

“And if there's nothing worth keeping?” I whispered, despite the anxiety nipping at me.

“I think you already know the answer, rogue.” I shuddered. “Get some rest. You'll need it.”

Without so much as another word in my direction, he stalked off. His footsteps echoed as he made his way down the hall, leaving me with one chilling realization.

I was doomed.

Kiara's POV I couldn't sleep, no matter how hard I tried to keep my eyes shut, they always snapped open again. Since the moon came out to rule the night, I wasn't sure I'd successfully closed my eyes for thirty minutes. Dreams interrupted my sleep, but they weren't just that. They were nightmares wrapped in the scent of something familiar. A whole lot of the dreams I'd had this night were vague and didn't make sense, but it came with a strange sense of familiarity. Like I understood what they meant, or I was going to, if only I opened my eyes and heart to whatever message they were passing across. I stared at the ceiling above me, not even blinking. The night air seeped in through the open window, cool and thick like it could grant rest to whoever asked for it. Anyone except me though. This had been my routine since yesterday. Yesterday, I couldn't even sleep a wink, and how could I? When the events of the day before had stuck to my mind, refusing me even so much as a minute's

Kiara's POV Time seemed to come to a standstill, as I stood rooted in my spot. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't bring myself to move, and I told myself that it had everything to do with the fact that I was scared and anxious, and was nowhere near related to the burly man behind me. My back was still pressed against his front, and alongside his abs making a dent into my back, I felt something else poking at me. I shuddered. I didn't want to think too much about it, if it was real or just my mind playing games with me. If there was something I was sure was more real than I would like to admit, it was the goosebump that trailed my skin, and how the spot where our bodies touched singed with a dangerous kind of fire. His hands were by my sides, and for a moment, I wondered what it would feel like if he were to inch closer with his fingers and…..“What the hell do you think you're doing, rogue?” Darius' voice washed over me and I shivered. Kiara's POV A bone shattering cold was the first thing I felt the moment I drifted back into consciousness. My eyes burned as I tried to peel them open, but I did so anyway. I'd already had a taste of the darkness, and it wasn't something I preferred to linger on. Something cold pressed against my cheek, and I quickly figured it out to be stone. The air was thick with the scent of mold, and I didn't miss the throb at the back of my head that echoed like a war drum. It sent sparks of pain through my skull, and no matter which direction I turned, nothing seemed to help with the pain. I tried to move, but the chains around my wrists restricted every effort I made, and simultaneously reminding me of where the hell I was too. The dungeons. For some reason, the realization came with some memories, memories I didn't ask for, and I couldn't help but shiver. The sound of a thunderstorm cut through the air signaling yet another heavy downpour. Fat drops of rain hit the ground and my body, making me flinch in pain.I watched as the pack members hurried to take shelter at the pack house yet I remained on the ground, unmoving. It was yet another day of kneeling before the packhouse, enduring hot and scorching sun during the day and chilling rain throughout the night. My eyes caught sight of a figure walking towards me with an umbrella in his hands, sheltering himself from the harsh rain. I watched as he neared where I was kneeling until he stood a metre away from me. “ Are you finally going to admit it?” He asked, his voice hard and laced with anger. Meeting his fuming face, I repeated the answer I have been giving for the past two days. “ I didn't push her.” I replied stubbornly. It was the truth. I didn't push Vivian, the Luna of Stone Howl pack. My answer seemed to anger him even more. “ You still won't admit it?” He snarled, lifting h

I don't know for how long I remained unconscious. When I finally opened my eyes, everything that happened for the last few days came crashing down on me. My father's limp body as he stared at me even in his death. To save my life, he pleaded with Hunter to punish him instead. I watched as they executed my father before my own eyes. Fat tears rolled down my eyes as I remembered the last words my father told me. “ Live well, Kiara.” He said them with a warm smile on his face as if he didn't hate me for causing his death. Yes, I was the reason my father was killed and Hunter didn't stop reminding me of that painful fact for the last few days. Hunter didn't stop after killing my father. He forced me to kneel before the packhouse until I confessed,a confession he didn't get. That's how he ended up locking me up in the dungeon with no hope of ever leaving the place alive. “ I would advise you to save your energy, Kiara. Crying won't help down here.” A familiar voice said, patting my

The two guards grabbed each of my hands in a tight grip, restraining my movement. I watched in horror as Vivian removed a dagger from goddess knows where. He didn't bother to hide the hatred and disgust in his voice and face. “ But it seems you have nine lives like a cat. You won't die easily.” He added with a sneer. I smiled deprecatingly. I am indeed worthless in his eyes, not even the mate bond could add value. He couldn't wait to see me dead, to get rid of me. “ Vivian will be crowned as my Luna tomorrow. I suddenly feel generous for that reason.” Hunter stated and I waited with bated breath to hear his next words. “ I will let you go. Leave from here and disappear, Kiara. Pain was the first thing my body registered the moment I opened my eyes. It wasn't sharp and excruciating like the aftermath of Hunter's guards torturing me, neither was it as destabilizing as Vivian's insults. The pain that woke me was dull , just barely there to hint that I was still alive. My eyes blinked to a ceiling I couldn't recognize. Even the stone walls didn't help in jogging my memory. Warm light filled the room and I traced it to a lamp shining in the corner. A small part of me had expected blood stained walls, and perhaps the stale stench of decayed bodies. That was usually the signature scent in the dungeons, so why was this different? One more look at my surroundings proved I wasn't in the dungeon and I couldn't help but wonder why. I tried to sit up, and winced as pain spread through my body. Something poked at my sides, and I came to realize they were bandages. Someone had tended to my wounds. Why? I was a rogue, and rogues didn't get kindness. All we got was pain

Darius’ POV I could still see her at the back of my mind, clearly too, and it really made no sense. I leaned against the tall windows of my office, arms folded across my chest. I rarely took this position, but right now, and with the many thoughts running through my mind, it was the only one I would recommend. The late sun spilled gold over the courtyard below, catching onto the dark roots of the trees scattered around. Up until this moment, this particular view had never reminded me of anything, but apparently, all it took to change that fact, was one scrawny looking rogue. I muttered under my breath. Her hair was the exact shade of the tree trunks below, and dare I say hers was a more beautiful color to gaze on. The strands framed her oval face perfectly, highlighting her hazel eyes and pink lips. There were a few cuts to the side of her mouth and face, and it was pretty normal, since I'd gotten word that she'd been saved from the riverbank. What wasn't normal, was the appe
