Chapter 78

Caroline’s POV

Diane Ross died at 3:42 AM.

The words blinked across Kane’s encrypted server like some twisted headline. Stark. Clinical. Cold.

But the silence in our apartment wasn’t.

Kane froze mid-step, one boot still untied, his shirt half-buttoned as the alert blared low from the wall monitor.

I was standing near the dresser, a holster in my hand.

Preparing. Ready to leave.

But the second I saw her name, Diane Ross, Deceased something shifted in my chest. Something I didn’t expect.

“What the hell?” I muttered, crossing the room. “Is that…”

“Confirmed,” Kane said tightly. “Biometrics. Her retinal scan went cold three minutes ago.”

I blinked. “Cold?”

“Dead,” he said simply.

I stared at the screen. I didn’t feel sad, not really. But I felt… something.

Maybe because Diane had always felt untouchable. A myth dressed in silk and venom. An enemy you didn’t beat, you survived.

And now she was gone.

“She was part of the core,” I whispered. “One of the originals. This… changes th

  • BENEATH THE COLD CONTRACT    CHAPTER 80

Chapter 80:Gina’s POVI stared at the phone where Raymond had just dropped the location of Kane’s safehouse like it meant nothing.Like Diane hadn’t died less than an hour ago.Like my world hadn’t cracked beneath my feet.“You’re awfully quiet, Gina,” Raymond said, turning toward me with that smug little half-smile. “I expected more tears. Or at least a tantrum.”I clenched my fists. My nails dug into my palm, grounding me.“You killed her,” I whispered.“She outlived her usefulness,” he replied coolly, brushing imaginary dust from his sleeve. “Besides, I’m the new head now. We can’t have dead weight dragging us down.”“You think you can replace her?”“I already have.” He gestured around the room like a man unveiling his empire. “This—this is mine now.”Kelly stepped forward, slow and deliberate. “You’re getting sloppy, Raymond. Leaving bodies like breadcrumbs.”Raymond didn’t even flinch. “Sloppy gets attention. Attention creates fear. Fear gives me loyalty.”“Fear gives you corpse

  • BENEATH THE COLD CONTRACT    CHAPTER 79

Chapter 79Kane’s POVDiane Ross died at 3:42 AM.I didn’t need confirmation from the encrypted message on my phone. The moment the screen lit up, something cold settled in my bones. A silence inside me that hadn’t existed since the last time I buried someone I hated and still didn’t want dead.Caroline was already dressed, pulling her hoodie over her shoulders, zipping up the duffel bag with quiet efficiency. No wasted motion. Just survival instinct kicking in.“She’s really gone?” she asked, eyes not leaving the zipper.“Yeah,” I replied, voice low. “Confirmed twenty minutes ago.”There was no victory in it. Diane might’ve been cruel, manipulative, obsessive—but she was predictable. Strategic. Alive, she was a chess player. Dead, she left a void. And chaos loved a void.“I thought we’d have more time,” Caroline muttered.I walked over to the corner of the room, checking my gear. “Time was never on our side. Raymond made his move. He’s not playing anymore. He’s hunting.”Caroline sta

  • BENEATH THE COLD CONTRACT    CHAPTER 77

Chapter 77:Diane’s POV"She dismantled the pen."Gina’s voice was quiet over the encrypted line, but I heard the frustration beneath the surface.Of course, Caroline dismantled it. Of course, Kane helped.I leaned back in my chair, legs crossed, one manicured finger tapping against the rim of my wine glass. The room around me was dim, the lights low, a single monitor casting a pale glow across the black marble table.“Did they confront you?” I asked, eyes still on the screen showing a paused image of Kane’s apartment.“No,” Gina replied. “Not directly. But Caroline’s already withdrawn. Kane’s being… Kane.”“That’s fine,” I murmured. “It means they know you’re a threat again. That’s leverage.”“But not control,” she bit back.I smiled faintly. “Control is earned in layers.”There was a pause. Then:“You’re not angry?”I swirled the wine. “No. They were supposed to find the bug. It was never meant to last. Only to confirm Gina was accepted back in.”She fell silent on the line.“They l

  • BENEATH THE COLD CONTRACT    CHAPTER 76

Chapter 76Kane’s POVThe call ended, but his voice still lingered—like smoke curling through my skull.Raymond.The bastard who killed his own twin and took his life like a coat he could wear.I stared at the phone as if it might ring again. My hand tightened into a fist before I even realized I was moving.“He’s not hiding anymore,” I said slowly, voice low, barely more than a growl. “He wanted me to know it was him.”Caroline stood a few steps away, her arms folded, eyes burning. “And now we know for sure. He’s in play.”I nodded, cold rage crawling down my spine. “He’s always been in play. We were just too distracted to look at the damn board.”“He timed this,” she said. “Gina showed up. Then him calling the same night we find the bug?”I looked at her, jaw clenched. “This is a coordinated front.”She exhaled. “So what now?”I walked over to the table and stared at the disassembled pen. “I start pulling strings of my own.”I picked up my phone again and dialed a number I’d buried

  • BENEATH THE COLD CONTRACT    CHAPTER 75

Chapter 75:Caroline's POVThe door clicked shut behind Gina.Silence.I didn’t move at first. Just stared at the space she’d been standing in seconds ago.The hug still lingered on my skin, like old perfume I couldn’t wash off.Kane stood a few feet away, arms crossed, face unreadable. But I knew him. He was a hurricane holding his breath.“She’s lying,” he said.I turned to him slowly. “Maybe.”His eyes narrowed. “You don’t believe her.”“No,” I murmured, walking back to the living room. “But I wanted to.”I sat on the edge of the couch, her pen—that damn silver pen—still clutched in my palm. It felt heavier now.“She cried,” I said quietly.Kane didn’t answer. Just stalked to the corner of the room and began checking the cameras on the monitor wall.“She didn’t shake when she hugged me,” I continued. “She didn’t hesitate either. And her breathing was wrong.”He glanced over his shoulder. “You scanned her?”“Every second.”He came closer, crouched in front of me. His hand brushed mi
