[Alora’s POV]

I was in my room, sitting peacefully on my bed as I drafted new chapters for my ongoing book. The word count read 20,000, and I couldn't help but sigh. I hadn’t had the time to write properly lately—all thanks to the drama playing out in this house like a never-ending soap opera. But right now? This was my only chance to make progress, and there was no way I’d let it slip.

Just when I clicked back into the zone, a knock came at the door.

I groaned out loud. “Who could it be now?”

Reluctantly, I slid off the bed, padded to the door, and twisted the handle. Before I could even speak, the person outside strode in like he owned the place.

Stanley.

His hands were shoved deep into his pockets, that usual bossy, smug expression plastered across his face like a permanent tattoo.

I shut the door behind him with a small thud. He was already seated on my bed, legs crossed, back straight like he was posing for a magazine cover.

“Get ready,” he said without preamble. “

031 Alora’s POV I didn’t know what was in that wine, but I was definitely feeling it. The warm buzz in my chest had turned into giggles I couldn’t hold back, and Stanley—bossy, arrogant Stanley—was making it worse. “Stanley—stop!” I laughed, swaying as he reached for my hand again, trying to spin me. He was grinning like a devil, his cheeks flushed pink from the drink. “C’mon, you’re ruining the moment. Just one more twirl.” I tried to protest, but ended up twirling anyway, my hair spinning around my face like a halo. I stumbled into him again, and this time he caught me, his arms strong and steady around my waist. “See?” he said, eyes meeting mine for just a second too long. “I’ve got you.” My breath hitched. I hated that I noticed the way his voice softened, or the way his hand lingered at the small of my back. I blamed the wine. Definitely the wine. “Don’t look at me like that,” I mumbled. “Like what?” His voice dropped, teasing. “Like you don’t irritate me to death every

  • BENEATH THE LIES    WHAT?!.

032[CHARLES’ POV]I couldn’t have prepared myself for what I saw downstairs—Alora in Stanley’s arms. That wasn’t just acting. No. That went way beyond what the plan required. The way she clung to him, head resting gently on his chest like he was her safe place… it was too natural, too intimate. And Stanley—he held her like she belonged to him. Like she wasn’t mine.My chest tightened, a painful knot forming just beneath my ribs. I stormed into my room and slammed the door shut, the echo a poor substitute for the scream building in my throat.“Damn it!” I hissed, slamming my fist into the wall. The sharp sting that shot through my knuckles was nothing compared to the fire burning in my chest. The girl I loved—no, the girl I still love—was falling into someone else’s arms, right before my eyes.I sat on the edge of my bed, hands tangled in my hair, breathing hard. Every time I tried to block out the image, it came back stronger—Alora, wrapped in Stanley’s arms, like she belonged there.

  • BENEATH THE LIES    WILL YOU MARRY ME.

033I placed a hand to my head as I recalled the events of last night—the heat between Stanley and me, the way my hands roamed his chest, the burning tension that crackled between us like a live wire. My heart pounded at the memory. I had lost control, completely. I didn’t even recognize myself.I can't keep up with this, I whispered to myself, a wave of shame creeping in.I turned toward him, still lying in bed beside me, his bare chest rising and falling steadily. The calm on his face irritated me. How could he be so unbothered?"I'm done," I said, my voice firm. "I can't do this anymore."Stanley's eyes fluttered open. “Alora, wait. Think things through.”"Think what through?" I snapped, sitting up. "Look at you. You’re not even wearing a shirt—and me? Only God knows what I did last night. I can’t even remember it all clearly.”He sat up, running a hand through his messy hair. "I know we were out of control," he said gently, “but you can’t just walk away. You signed the contract.”

034CHARLES' POVI stared at the scene unfolding before me, my fingers tightening around the edge of the table. My jaw locked, chest heaving. I couldn't take it anymore."What?" I said aloud, louder than I meant to—but I didn’t care. The words flew out like a bullet. My voice sliced through the silence in the room, making everyone turn.Stanley didn’t even blink. My own friend. My so-called friend, standing there with a damn ring box, proposing to the one woman who made my heart race.He said it was all an act.An act? This—this was too far.Alora was only supposed to pose as his fiancée. Just for appearances. Just until his mother left. That was the deal. That was the line. And now he was crossing it. Publicly. Boldly. Like none of it mattered.“Is there anything wrong, Charles?” Stanley’s mother asked, her voice coated in concern, but it was laced with the kind of judgment that sliced deeper than kindness ever could. All eyes were on me. 035I stared at her—those eyes, always convincing, always pretending to mean well. But I wasn’t like her. I couldn’t be like her. I wouldn’t.Without another word, I grabbed her hand.“What are you doing, Charles?” Chloe gasped, her eyes wide in shock. She thought she had wrapped me around her little finger, thought she’d successfully manipulated me. But I was about to prove her very, very wrong.“What I should’ve done a long time ago,” I snapped coldly.Without hesitation, I yanked her out of the room and shoved her backward into the hallway. She stumbled slightly, her mouth falling open.“I won’t bow to your demands, Chloe! You’re mentally unstable. And the next time you try to poison my mind with your delusions, I won’t hesitate to have you thrown out of this house.”Her mouth twitched as if she was about to protest, but I slammed the door in her face before she could utter a word. The loud bang echoed like a war drum in my chest. I leaned back against the door, my fists clenched.

036ASH'S POV"Ash!" The director’s voice sliced through the silence, snapping me out of the fog clouding my mind.My eyes blinked rapidly as the cheers died down, all eyes on me, the girl who'd just ruined a flawless scene with a misplaced bite. Drake looked at me, confused and slightly concerned."What just happened?" the director asked, adjusting his glasses. "You were doing great and then—""I... I’m sorry," I cut in quickly, pushing strands of hair out of my face and faking a confident smile. "I lost focus for a second. I'd like to do it again. Please. Just one more take."He looked at me long and hard, then at the casting team. A brief pause."Fine," he said at last. "One more shot. Make it count."Drake gave me a reassuring nod. I tried to ignore the chill crawling up my spine as I took my place again, but it wasn’t easy. My eyes involuntarily scanned the crowd. Clark was gone. Like he was never there. But I knew what I'd seen—his grin, his cane, that goddamn hat."Action!"The

  • BENEATH THE LIES    HE WON'T WALK AWAY.

037 I stared at him, my heart pounding like a drum. What does he want from me now? I thought bitterly. As if he hadn’t already made my life a living hell. I had a career to face, a fresh start, and I was determined not to let anything—or anyone—stand in my way, but here he was standing in front of me plotting on how to destroy the life I now want to face. “What do you want, Detective Clark?” I asked coldly, my voice stripped of emotion. He shrugged casually. “Came to watch you perform. Just like you always have. Something wrong with that?” “Cut the riddles. Go straight to the point. Why are you really here?” I snapped, narrowing my eyes. He stepped closer, his face unreadable. “Like I said, I came to watch you. And to remind you—I’ll be watching you for a very long time, I'll make sure I have every detail of everything you do and everywhere you visit and I'll make sure you're exposed.” I clenched my jaw. “No case has ever been taken away from me, Ash. 038As Stanley knelt before me, a heavy silence seemed to fall over the room. His leg was bent at an awkward angle, and his hand stretched forward, presenting the diamond ring with an air of uncertainty. My gaze flicked to his mother, whose mouth hung open in sheer excitement. Her joy was contagious, radiating like a beacon in the room. But, for some reason, I couldn’t shake the unease gnawing at my insides. This was all an act, yet the weight of the moment felt too real. I gulped, trying to steady my breathing. You got this, Alora, I whispered to myself. Just act natural. Pretend it’s real. Without missing a beat, I covered my mouth, letting out a soft gasp. “Oh my God, Stanley,” I exclaimed, my voice trembling with the right amount of surprise. I took a small step forward, my cheeks flushing crimson, feigning the deep, overwhelming emotion that was supposed to be there. “I’ve always waited for this day, Stanley,” I said, my voice quivering with fake excitement. “The day you’d put

ALORA'S POV061“Really?” I asked, stepping closer to him, my voice tight with disbelief.“Yes, really,” Mr. Grey replied, tapping a few keys on his laptop. “When I checked the footage again, I noticed it had been blurred using some kind of virus filter. But it’s not permanent—I can fix it. I can help you.”I stared at him. My heart jumped, but I forced myself to stay calm. I couldn't afford to let hope ruin my focus.“Thank you,” I breathed. “Seriously, Mr. Grey, I don’t know what I would’ve done without you. Do you think you can get it done by tomorrow?”He hesitated for a second, then nodded confidently. “I’ll work through the night if I have to. You’ll have it by tomorrow. I promise.”I let out a slow breath, tension peeling off me like old skin. “Thanks,” I said quietly. “I’m counting on you.”“You should,” he said simply.Without another word, I turned and left the room. ALORA'S POV060"Uhm, I… I uhm, I'm…" I stammered, my voice faltering as a knot formed in my throat. I had no idea what to say to the stern man staring at me. But then it struck me—everyone believed I was Mr. Stanley’s wife now. If I played that role convincingly, and backed it with the photos I’d collected, there was no way he wouldn’t believe me.Straightening my shoulders, I forced the trembling out of my voice. “I’m… I’m Mrs. Stanley. Mr. Stanley’s wife. And you must be Mr. Grey.”He stared at me, his lips tightening. “Women like you disgust me,” he snapped without hesitation. My breath caught in my chest. Had I heard that right? “Did you just say I disgust you?” I asked, stunned. He didn’t even blink. “You claim to be his wife, yet you go around cheating on him. Yeah, I saw the whole thing.”“Mr. Grey, please,” I pleaded quickly, pushing down the wave of anger and shame rising in me. “I need your help. This is about my dignity—”“Dignity?” he barked out a dry laugh. “What dignity

  • BENEATH THE LIES    BUSTED!.

059ALORA'S POV I had been waiting in my room for the past two hours, ever since the chaos that had unfolded downstairs. My heart was still racing from what had happened, but I needed everything to settle. Everyone had to be asleep before I could make my move. Silence was my ally tonight. Charles thought he was clever—thought he could twist things and make it look like I was lying. But he didn’t know who he was messing with. I was going to show him what smart really looked like. By now, the house had gone quiet. Lights were out in most rooms, and the occasional creak of settling wood was all that could be heard. That was my cue. I stood from my bed, my bare feet making no sound as I slipped out of the room and into the dimly lit hallway. My destination was clear: the CCTV room. That room held the truth—hard evidence of what happened that day. If I was going to expose Charles, I needed the footage. I had heard an old man named Grey was usually stationed there, but rumor had it he w

058 STANLEY'S POV After my mom had passed, Chloe and I were headed back home. It was already late at this point. I was driving. And just then, my phone began buzzing through the call. When I looked at the name on the screen, I saw that it was Alora, and I ended the call instantly. I didn't want anything to do with her. Not now. Especially now that my mother had passed away. I needed to find myself. Alora had betrayed me in the worst way ever. So I thought. After a while, I arrived home. I parked the car in the parking lot, and Chloe and I got out from the car. We both walked into the house and just as, we did. I saw Alora sitting on the couch in the parlor. I wanted to ignore her at first. But when she spotted me, she stood up and walked towards where I was. I wanted passing her, but then she blocked me. She didn't allow me to pass. "I don't have time for your nonsense, Alora. • BENEATH THE LIES    WHY?.

STANLEY'S POV054 The party was alive, humming with laughter and the low thrum of music vibrating through the floor. Glasses clinked, voices overlapped in a warm, chaotic symphony, and from a distance, the lights bathed everything in a golden, almost dreamlike glow. To everyone else, it was perfect. But to me, it was a carefully staged lie, and I was barely holding it together. I wove through the crowd, nodding politely, my heart pounding harder with every step. I had made sure Chloe didn’t know the party had been moved earlier — the last thing I needed was unnecessary drama tonight. This moment had to be flawless. For my mother. For the story we had crafted. I pushed my way toward the stage, searching for her face among the sea of guests. She should have been here by now, front and center, smiling proudly. But she wasn’t. Panic prickled at the edge of my mind. Where was she? Without her, all of this — the fake wedding, the fake smiles — meant nothing. I stared at my watch. Time w

I...” My words stumbled out, but before I could finish, she pushed me aside roughly. Her eyes darted to the clothes I had purposely torn. Then, she turned sharply back to me, noticing the scissors still in my hand. Without warning, she slapped me hard across the face. I cupped my cheek, feeling the painful sting radiate through my skin. “What is this? What did you do?!” she bellowed. “You tore the clothes I got as a gift for my son's wife? This... this is the height of it!” Her voice cracked with anger. “I won’t tolerate this. I’ll place a call to my son and tell him everything you’ve done! I’ll have you kicked out of this house i
