POV: Damian

“Where are we at with the new advertisements for the company?”

My voice cut through the meeting room, sharp and controlled, even though my patience was hanging by a thread.

It seemed no one was taking their jobs seriously.

The long glass table was surrounded by the marketing department and team leaders, tablets open, files scattered.

I looked at my watch. Three hours. We had been sitting here for close to three damn hours. And they were yet to give me what I wanted.

A man seated two chairs to my right cleared his throat. “Team Two was originally in charge of the campaign ad project, sir. However, the team leader was involved in an accident a week later. So the project was handed over to team three.”

I straightened slightly. “Did you say he was involved in an accident?”

“Yes, sir. Team Three also said they had to begin the whole project from the beginning.”

Everyone began nodding their head in agreement with what the man had just said.

My brows pulled together as I lea

  • BENEATH THE MASK    CHAPTER 33

POV: DamianI leaned back in my chair, the leather squeezing softly under my weight, I closed my eyes as the noise of the day finally faded into silence around me.My mind went straight to Marcus D’Angelo.Only the thought of his name made my chest tightened with something unpleasant. The meeting from yesterday replayed over and over in my head whether I wanted it to or not—his smug smile, his calculated pauses, the way he always spoke as if he already owned whatever he was discussing. He was dangerous, not because he acted like he was loud or reckless, but because he was patient. Marcus was the kind of man who never reached for anything unless he was certain it would definitely be his.And right now, it was painfully obvious what he wanted—no, who—who he wanted. And that was Akayda Jordan. My secretary.I opened my eyes slowly and began looking at the ceiling of my office as if it was going to solve every question in my head.On any other day, I wouldn’t have cared. Marcus was free

  • BENEATH THE MASK    CHAPTER 32

POV: AkaydaIt was another day to go to work and go make some money.I had been working at Knight Enterprises for a while now and I had just realized something surprising.I was gradually getting used to the office life. The long hours. The constant movement. And also the quiet pressure that came with working on the seventy second floor of one of the most powerful and biggest buildings in the city. And honestly, I knew it could have been worse. The most interesting part of all this was that the work itself wasn’t even the major problem anymore. I had successfully learned and mastered how to organize Damian Knight’s schedule, anticipate and predict his moods, and stay ten steps ahead of whatever the day threw at my face. And somewhere along the line, the chaos had started to feel… like my new normal.I also hadn’t seen Vivian Hale since that day.The day she smiled at me like I was her friend and then tried to end my career in the same breath. And then there was Jamila?I had also not

  • BENEATH THE MASK    CHAPTER 31

POV: VivianThe café was quiet in the way expensive places always were—with soft music playing in side the walls of the cafe, the low sound of silent conversations, and the strong smell of roasted coffee beans and pastries in the air. It was the kind of place people came to discuss business without wanting to be overheard. And where couples came to destress after a very long day.Right now, I sat by the window, my legs crossed neatly beneath the table, my handbag also sitting pretty beside me. Outside, cars passed slowly, the late afternoon sun casting a warm glow over the city street.I lifted my cup up to my lips and took a slow sip of my coffee. It was already getting cold.My eyes shifted to my wristwatch for what felt like the hundredth time. The time was 4:20 p.m.I clenched my jaw slightly biting down hard that I could feel the pain in my jaw.I had specifically told Wilder to be here by four. Not four thirty. Not whenever he felt like it.Four on the dot.I had even arrived

  • BENEATH THE MASK    CHAPTER 30

POV: DamianI could feel the pain in my jaw from how hard I was biting down on my teeth.“Did you just say Afghanistan?”The words were suddenly out of my mouth before I could even stop them.Marcus nodded slowly. The bastard still had that stupid smile that annoyed the hell out of me still glued to his fucking face, like he was enjoying every second of this. And I was so such he was enjoying it.Bastard.I made sure my face remained completely unreadable. Years of training had taught me how to control my expressions, but I wasn’t so sure my eyes weren’t already betraying me.After all the eyes were the window to the soul With Marcus, nothing was ever simple. He was a ticking time bomb that was so unpredictable. And just the mere fact that he was bringing up Afghanistan now meant he was definitely playing some kind of twisted game. I just didn’t know what it was yet.“You’re going to have to look for another company to handle this for you,” I said as calmly as I could. “Knight Enter

  • BENEATH THE MASK    CHAPTER 29

POV: AkaydaI was currently on my way to Mr. Knights house and I was tired as hell. Why?Because I have been awake since 4:30 a.m.Yep. You heard it right. Four. Thirty.A whole me, Akayda Jordan, awake by 4:30 a.m.On any normal work day, I would have set my alarm for five, but today wasn’t a normal work day. Today, I was going straight to my boss’s house. Not the office. His house. And his house was quite a distance from the office, so that meant it was very far from my house. He had also asked me to be there by eight a.m. sharp, and that was why I had woken up extremely early.I didn’t want to take any chances.By six a.m., I was already out of my apartment, car keys in hand. Melina had stared at me like I had lost my mind when I told her I was leaving for work already.“By this time?” she asked, eyes half closed, hair messy. “Akayda, the sun isn’t even awake yet. Who goes out by this time?”“I know,” I said, forcing a smile. “I just… don’t want to be late. And besides we're work

  • BENEATH THE MASK    CHAPTER 28

POV: Damian It felt like hours had passed and I was still seated in my office, but my mind was all over the place. It felt like the walls were mocking me yet the silence in the room was loud. I finally stood up and walked to the window, looking down at the city without really seeing anything. My reflection on the glass looked tense,u jaw was clenched tight, my shoulders were stiff. I continued to replay everything that had just happened with my father over and over again, and with every replay, the anger that was boiling inside my chest grew hotter. Who does that to their own child. Was this how fathers were supposed to act with their sons? Or children altogether? With threats and manipulation and mind control. Because Harry Knight had always done it this way. It was the only way he knew how to threat me, his only child. I fist clenched and unclenched at my sides. The worst part was that I knew him to well. I knew my father never made empty threats or promises. When he sai
