We got home late in the afternoon. The car ride had been quiet. Benjamin held my hand the whole way, and my mother sat in the backseat, staring out the window like the city didn't exist. It's been so long since she saw the city. Everything looked new to her.

Benjamin opened the front door, and two of his men helped my mother out of the car. She was wrapped in a soft cloak, her feet barely touching the floor as they guided her through the living room. She didn't say a word, but her eyes scanned every corner like she was trying to remember what normal felt like.

I followed close behind, not speaking either. They took her to the guest room and made sure she was settled. The doctor who checked her at the hospital said she needed rest and good food more than anything.

It was still hard to believe that my mother had survived so many years of silence, locked away like a secret nobody was meant to find.

Once she was lying down, I closed the door quietly and walked back into the living room. M

Benjamin’s voice broke through the tension. “What do you mean?” His tone was sharp, almost a demand, but I could hear the unease laced inside it.The doctor shifted his weight uncomfortably, his eyes darting toward the closed door at the end of the corridor before looking back at us. “I’m sorry,” he said, his voice low. “Please… let’s all talk in my office.”I glanced at Jake’s father who looked just as confused as I felt. His brows were knitted, his mouth pressed into a thin line. Without another word, we followed the doctor down the hall. When we entered the office, the doctor sat down heavily in his chair, as though whatever he was about to say carried a weight that had been crushing him for years.I lowered myself into the chair in front of his desk, my knees almost touching the edge. Benjamin didn’t sit, he stood behind me. Jake’s dad sat on the other chair, his posture stiff, his jaw clenched. The doctor folded his hands on the desk. “Five years ago,” he began slowly, “you came

It rang once before he picked up.His voice came through low, steady, like it always did. “Hello.”My throat tightened. “Hey… um, I came to the States. I just arrived. I came for my mum’s anniversary.”“Really?” His tone shifted, lighter. “Where are you? Daisy’s there, right?”I glanced over at Daisy. She sat cross-legged on the bed, her small hands wrapped around her iPad while she showed something to Jake. “Yes, she’s here,” I said quietly.“Okay, great. Where are you guys?”“A hotel,” I said, adjusting the hem of my shirt. “I just wanted to let you know we’re around. We’ll see you tomorrow after visiting my mum’s grave.”The line went silent for a beat too long. I could almost picture him, lips pressed together, deciding how much to say.“Okay then,” he finally replied. “Is there anything Daisy likes so that I… you know, I can get her?”“She loves video games,” I said, the words sticking somewhere between my chest and my throat. “You can get her that.”“Okay then. See you guys tomo

We got into the taxi and the door shut with a soft thud that seemed to echo inside my chest. The driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror, waiting for the address, and I gave it in a voice that felt tighter than I meant it to.I leaned back, arms crossed, watching the city blur past the windows. But the blur didn’t quiet the fire twisting in my stomach.Anger had a grip on me.Who does he think he is?The scene replayed in my mind in jagged pieces, each one making my jaw clench harder. Why would he look at me like that? And then another thought slid in, unwelcome but stubborn—Am I overreacting?I bit the inside of my cheek. The truth was, I didn’t even know what exactly had lit the fuse.It wasn’t just his words; it was… something else. Something in the way he carried himself. Something about him that just set my skin on edge.I turned my head toward Daisy. She sat pressed against the window, her lower lip jutting out ever so slightly, her brows drawn. That little pout of her

Our flight was at 10 a.m.I zipped Daisy’s small pink suitcase, pressing down hard to get the zipper over the bulge of clothes she had stuffed inside. “There,” I said with a small breath of relief, straightening up.Daisy sat cross-legged on the edge of the bed, her face lit by the glow of her iPad. Her little fingers tapped quickly on the screen, lost in whatever game she was playing.“Enough with the iPad, baby,” I said, holding out my hand. “Give it to me.”She let out a groan, dragging out the sound like it physically hurt her to stop. “Mum…”I raised my eyebrows. She huffed and handed it over, and I gave her a smile. “You can have it again when we get on the plane, okay?”Her pout faded into a small smile. “Okay.”I grabbed my handbag, slung it over my shoulder, and checked the time on my phone. 9:00 a.m. Thank God we weren’t late. I had a terrible habit of running behind for everything, and traveling with a child only made it harder. We hauled our bags down the narrow hallway of

*** Five years later ***The morning light spilled softly through the kitchen window as I folded the last flap of Daisy’s lunch box. “Daisy!” I called, my voice carrying just enough urgency to cut through the quiet house. “Come out, baby. We need to go. Drop the iPad now, you can play again when you get home from school.”The scrape of little feet on the hard marble floor answered me, and I set the lunch box down carefully on the counter. I glanced at the clock, Damn, I thought. We were running late, again.Life had been a wild ride, full of twists and turns I never expected. But these last five years… they had brought me something I didn’t think I would ever have again: hope. A spark I thought I had lost forever had started glowing bright again, all because of her.Five years ago, with Benjamin’s quiet support, I had moved to Florida. He called nearly every day at first, then slowly pulled back to three times a week, checking in on us. The distance helped. It kept the old wounds from

I looked up at Benjamin, my eyes swimming with tears that refused to stop. The weight of everything pressing down on me made my breath catch. “What are we going to do now?” I whispered, my voice cracking like thin glass. He met my gaze, the exhaustion written all over his face. He rubbed the back of his neck slowly before answering, “There is no way you can terminate it.”The words hit me like a punch to the stomach. I lowered my face into my hands, shoulders shaking as tears of pain spilled out in silent sobs. Hot tears dripped through my fingers, burning my skin as memories and fears crushed me.What am I supposed to do with this? I thought every question was spinning around my head without an answer. Why didn’t I notice sooner? Why does everything bad happen to me? My heart felt so heavy. I’m tired, so so tired. Why can’t anything just go right?Benjamin’s voice was soft, distant almost, as he gently said, “We will get through this.”But the words felt hollow. I couldn’t imagine a
