The air outside was cold against my skin, though my body still burned from the fire of my anger. My breath came out unsteady as I stood by the restaurant entrance, clutching the phone to my ear, my voice still shaking when I whispered for Benjamin to come pick me up.

Minutes felt like hours. Cars passed by, people walked in and out of the restaurant, laughing, talking, living their normal lives while I stood there feeling like my chest might break open. I hugged myself, pressing my arms around my body as though that would hold me together.

Then, I saw his car. The black SUV pulled up quickly to the curb, and before I even had time to breathe, Benjamin stepped out.

His eyes found me instantly. Hard, searching, filled with worry. Without saying anything, he closed the distance between us in quick strides. His hands were on my arms, then around me, pulling me into his chest.

For the first time since I had walked into that restaurant, I let myself breathe. The solid weight of him, the way

“Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Grey,” one of the officers greeted, his tone formal but not harsh.Benjamin squeezed my hand once before letting go and stepping out of the car. I followed, though my legs felt unsteady, like they were not ready to hold me.The two officers stopped a few feet from us. Their uniforms looked stiff, their faces unreadable, and the afternoon air carried the faint crackle of tension.“Is there a problem?” Benjamin asked calmly, though I noticed his jaw tighten. The taller officer shook his head. “No problem. We are here regarding Lucy Blackwood’s case.”The sound of her name almost made me choke. My chest burned, and I had to lower my gaze so they wouldn’t see the flicker of panic in my eyes.Benjamin gave a small nod. “Go on.”The shorter officer stepped forward, a folder tucked under his arm. His voice carried a practiced weight, steady and rehearsed. “After five years of active investigation, with no solid leads and no progress, the Commissioner has decided t

As soon as I stepped into the restaurant, warmth wrapped around me, mixed with the smell of roasted meat and coffee. My stomach churned. The noise of clinking glasses and quiet chatter sounded far away, like I was walking underwater. My eyes searched the room—and there he was.Mr. Blackwood sat close to the wide glass window at the edge of the row. His hands were folded on the table, his shoulders slightly hunched, his face turned toward the street as though he had been waiting a long time. The moment he noticed me, he stood quickly. His chair scraped against the floor.“Elizabeth,” he said, his voice low, careful.I froze where I was. My chest tightened, and for a second, I thought I couldn’t breathe. He looked older. Prison had stolen the strength from his frame, carved lines deeper into his face. His hair had thinned, more gray than black now.But it was still him—the man who had let his family tear me apart. My feet carried me forward, though every step felt heavy. I reached the t

The morning felt heavy, even though the house was quiet. Sunlight spilled through the curtains, brushing over the bed where Benjamin was sitting, already dressed for work. He sat at the edge, tying his shoes with a serious expression on his face.I leaned against the doorway, holding my coffee mug, watching him. He looked up at me, his eyes sharp, the way they always were when something troubled him.“Elizabeth,” he said, his voice calm but firm, “listen to me. Don’t do anything without telling me first.”I frowned. “What do you mean?”He sighed, pulling his tie straight, then came closer. His hand touched my arm, warm and steady, but his eyes pinned me in place. “I know you. You act on emotion. If Dennison tries to reach you, don’t meet him, don’t call him to meet up. Not without me. Promise me.”The weight in his tone made my chest tighten. “Benjamin…”“Promise me,” he repeated, softer now but still firm.I let out a shaky breath. “I won’t do anything. I promise.”He studied me a se

The past few days had been calm, almost too quiet.Benjamin and I have been closer, trying to understand each other and trying not to have arguments. Daisy laughed around him more, clinging to his arm when they sat together, asking him questions about everything and anything. They were bonding in a way I hadn’t thought possible, and though a part of me worried, another part of me felt a fragile sort of peace. We had agreed to tell Daisy the truth about him, about him being her father—but only when Lucy’s case was finally over. Until then, we lived inside a fragile bubble, pretending things were normal. When I once asked Benjamin how he planned to handle Lucy’s case, he simply said the police would drop it. His tone had been steady, confident. “They won’t find any evidence,” he told me, his fingers brushing mine across the table as if to ground me. “I’ll make them end it.”The only thing left was to find out who the anonymous messenger was.I tried not to think about it too much, but t

The next morning, I couldn’t get Benjamin’s words out of my head. They had settled inside me like a heavy weight, refusing to move no matter how many times I tried to shake them away. So, I went to the kitchen to make breakfast. I focused on the rhythm, stirring, flipping, setting plates on the counter—anything to keep me from sinking too deeply into what I was feeling.I didn’t hear him at first. His steps were quiet, and the kitchen was warm with steam, but when he finally spoke, his voice slid across my skin.“Good morning,” he said.I froze for half a second before forcing myself to glance at him. He was standing by the doorway, his hair still damp from a shower, shirt clinging to him in a way that made me look away too quickly.“Morning,” I said, my voice steadier than I felt.“How are you doing?” His tone was soft, cautious even, like he was testing me.“I’m fine,” I said, keeping my eyes on the pan. It was easier to lie when I wasn’t looking at him.But he didn’t leave it at t
