Amara’s POV

I pressed myself against my cell's chilly stone wall and held my breath. Even though my heart was racing, I made myself remain composed. I needed to leave. Before Viktor ruined me entirely, I had to get out.

There was a loud yawn from the guard outside my cell. He was becoming reckless. Excellent. For me, that would simplify things. I clenched the little pin I had stolen earlier, looking down at it. I knew how the mechanism operated because I had seen them lock and open the door enough times.

I carefully twisted the pin into the lock. Even though my hands were shaking, I couldn't afford to fail. Click. I paused when the door cracked open one inch. The guard remained still. I barely managed to get through by pushing it open. I walked slowly in the direction of the exit, listening for any alarm.

The chilly night air pricked my flesh as I arrived at the outer gate. I took off running. My breath came out in quick spurts as I ran into the darkness, my legs burning. I knew I had just a few minutes before they realized I was gone as soon as my feet struck the thick woodland floor.

“Seek her out!”

Behind me, the cry echoed. I continued.

As I pushed through the dense foliage, branches scratched my arms. Despite my body's protesting screams, I pushed through. They were approaching, and I could hear them crashing through the jungle.

I had to vanish.

I pushed myself into the shadows and crouched behind a downed tree. I bit my lip to refrain from letting out a sound as my chest heaved.

"Spread out! She couldn't have traveled very far!

I willed myself to become invisible and closed my eyes. The footsteps shifted away, but I wasn't sure if it was due to my wolf's increasing strength or just good fortune. My heart pounded in my ears, but I refrained from moving until the noises had subsided entirely.

I had freedom. However, I wasn't yet secure.

Darius clenched his hands and paced his room. His inner beast was roaring restlessly. There was a problem. A persistent aching that would not go away was palpable in his chest.

"Amara," he whispered to himself.

Days had passed since she was abducted, and now he felt nothing but emptiness. Something held them together despite the faint rejection bond. And it was yanking at him more forcefully now.

He hurried in one of his men. "We have news, Alpha. Amara got away.

Darius tightened all over. "What?"

They are after her even though she managed to escape Viktor's area. She is by herself in the bush.

His heart tightened. By themselves. Chased. Inside of him, his wolf screamed for him to do something. He had been wrong. Instead of protecting her, he had let her go. And now he was putting her in danger.

He picked up his coat and made his way to the door. "Get my best trackers ready. We're heading out now.

How long I had been jogging was unknown to me. I was so tired that I could hardly move my legs. I had to halt. Only for a second.

Then I noticed it. A tiny wooden home tucked away in the forest. From the chimney, smoke curled. It was inhabited. I paused. Was it secure? Were I left with an option?

I walked slowly over to the door and knocked.

An elderly woman with silver hair and sharp eyes appeared in front of me as the door cracked open. A knowing smile formed on her lips as her eyes ran over me.

She said, "Come in, kid." "You appear to have been through a lot."

After a moment of hesitation, I entered. I felt warmth immediately envelop me. The air was heavy with the smell of plants and something new.

"Who are you?" My question was hardly audible above a whisper.

The woman laughed. "My name is Morgana. And you—you have something unique, don't you?

I reached for my stomach. My trade secret. How was she aware?

Her gaze grew gloomy. Amara, I can assist you. But there is a cost to everything.

My whole body froze. "What is the price?"

Her voice was gentle but menacing as she approached. "Your child has strength. Too strong. I can give you the strength to defend yourself if you give it up.

A shiver went through my body. "Release my child?"

Morgana's head cocked. "Dear, you can't run forever. You will eventually require power to survive.

I shook my head, though my hands were shaking. "No. I refuse to do it.

Her face grew icy. "You will suffer as a result."

I froze as I heard a strong knock on the door.

Morgana turned to face the door with an expression that remained unchanged. "They've located you."

My heart was racing. No. Not right now.

"You must go," she stated coolly.

I took a step back. "But"

"Child, there's no time!" She spoke sharply. "Go!"

The door burst. As he entered, a man wearing Viktor's uniform fixed me with his gaze. With my body yelling in protest, I turned on my heel and ran out the back door.

Around me, the woodland became hazy. I exerted more effort, making my legs continue to move. Behind me, shouts resounded. They were close behind me.

My vision was swimming when I stumbled. I felt my body shutting down. I had run too far and pushed too hard. My strength fled me, and I gasped for air.

With my hands clutching my tummy for protection, I fell to the ground. My darling. I have to protect my child.

I heard footsteps approaching immediately before I passed out as darkness surrounded me.

A voice. In-depth. Known.

"Amara."

Then everything turned dark.

Who had discovered me? The men of Viktor? Darius? Or worse?

Amara’s POVThe courtyard was fire and ruin.Steel clashed, voices broke, and the stench of rot thickened until I could taste it on my tongue. Every breath was ash. Every heartbeat was war.But none of it mattered.Because across the chaos, the Forsaken Alpha’s pale eyes fixed on me. His smile was carved in bone and shadow, silent but merciless. The other Forsaken bent toward him, their movements sharpening, as if my fear was the drumbeat they followed.Darius’s hand lingered on my arm for a moment too long. He wanted to anchor me. To keep me behind the shield wall, safe. But safe had never been an option for me.I tore forward. The shadows answered before I even called, lashing out in spears and blades. They cut through Forsaken bodies, reducing them to dust and tar. My pack rallied behind me, a roar rising from their throats, but it was thin against the tide. For every creature we struck down, another crawled over the walls, dragging rusted chains like bells tolling the end of every

  • BETRAYED BY THE MOON    Chapter 86: Fire on the Horizon

Amara’s POVThe night hadn’t ended before the horns sounded again. This time, it wasn’t warning from the border villages. It was the walls themselves.I was already in the courtyard when the first flare lit the sky ,red fire streaking upward before bursting in a shower of sparks. The eastern watchtower, signaling attack.Shouts tore through the stronghold as warriors stumbled from their beds, dragging on armor, clutching blades. The scent of fear was sharp in the air, mingling with the metallic tang of blood still drying from the last fight.Darius appeared beside me, golden eyes fierce. “They’ve moved faster than expected.”“Or we’ve underestimated them,” Mira muttered, strapping her sword tight across her back. Her jaw was set, her eyes already on the gates. The ground trembled under my feet. Once. Twice. A steady rhythm, growing louder. Then came the howls. Not the living. Not wolves as we knew them. These howls were fractured, broken, like glass grinding against stone. The Forsake

  • BETRAYED BY THE MOON    Chapter 85: Blood at the Border

Amara’s POVThe warning horn split the night.I was already half awake when the sound tore through the courtyard, shrill and urgent, rattling the windows. Boots thundered against stone, shouts rising like a tide.I was at the balcony in seconds, cloak thrown around my shoulders. Beyond the walls, the forest glowed faintly orange ,the border villages burning. The Forsaken had arrived.By the time I reached the yard, Darius was already strapping on his armor, his voice carrying as he barked orders. Warriors rushed to arm themselves, faces pale but determined. The fear was there, but discipline kept them moving.“Scouts say they’ve broken the wards along the eastern ridge,” Mira reported, sword drawn. “The villages won’t hold.”Darius’s eyes flicked to me, gold blazing in the torchlight. “You’re with me.”I nodded, but the weight in his voice wasn’t just command. It was trust. Trust I couldn’t afford to fail.We rode hard through the night, hooves pounding against frozen ground. Smoke th

  • BETRAYED BY THE MOON    Chapter 84: Beneath the Mask

Amara’s POVThe next night, I couldn’t sit still.Every creak of the floorboards, every shift of the wind against the shutters had my heart racing. Sleep was out of the question. If I closed my eyes, I heard him again ,Kael, calm and certain in the forest: Strike first. End it on our terms.I had kept his treachery quiet for too long. If I told Darius, he would confront Kael openly, and blood would spill before the Forsaken even reached our gates. If I told Mira, she would put her blade through him without hesitation.No. This had to come from me.So when the moon rose high and the halls fell quiet, I left my chamber, cloak pulled tight around me, and went hunting.I found him in the armory, sharpening his blade. Sparks spat with every stroke, flashing against the hard angles of his face. He didn’t look surprised to see me.“Lady of shadows,” he murmured, as though he’d been expecting me.I kept my voice low, steady. “We need to talk.”He sheathed the blade slowly, deliberately, and l

  • BETRAYED BY THE MOON    Chapter 83: A Pack Divided

Amara’s POVEven after the sky lightened and the sounds of waking filled the halls, my body refused rest. Every time I closed my eyes, Kael’s voice echoed back at me:Sleep never came. She’ll deliver us to Lilith… Better to strike first.By the time Darius entered my chamber, I was still sitting at the edge of the bed, cloak pulled around my shoulders as though it could shield me from what I’d heard. He frowned. “You haven’t slept.”I lifted my eyes to his. The worry there was plain, though he tried to hide it behind Alpha steel. “Would you, knowing what’s coming?”His jaw tightened. “No.”For a moment, neither of us spoke. He crossed the room and knelt before me, his hands bracing on my knees. “We’ll hold them, Amara. The Forsaken won’t reach these walls.”I wanted to believe him. Needed to. But the true danger wasn’t clawing outside our borders. It was already inside, sharpening its blades in the dark.I almost told him what I’d overheard. The words pressed against my lips, aching to

  • BETRAYED BY THE MOON    Chapter 82: Knives in the Dark

Amara’s POVThe packhouse felt colder that night. Not because of the stone walls or the draft slipping in through the high windows, but because every hallway seemed to echo with whispers. Whispers of my name. Whispers of what I was becoming. Whispers that clung to me like smoke, even when no lips were moving.I walked the corridors slowly, listening. The torches along the walls sputtered, their light flickering too much to be steady. Every sound sharpened, the scrape of boots across stone, the distant creak of doors closing, the hushed conversations that cut off whenever I passed by.I had fought monsters. I had faced Viktor. I had carried a child into this blood-stained world. Yet none of it weighed on me the way this did, my own pack turning brittle with fear. Mira was waiting outside my chamber, arms folded. Her figure was half in shadow, her stance sharp as a blade.“You shouldn’t wander alone this late,” she said, voice taut.“I needed air,” I answered. Her gaze flicked to my wr
