The light does not feel like rope. It feels like fingers.

That is the thing nobody could have told me about magic like this — that it would not feel cold and cruel the way I always imagined chains would feel.

It feels like hands, warm and patient, wrapping slow around my wrists, my throat, holding me the way you would hold something you loved too much to ever let go of on your own.

I hate that it feels gentle. Gentle is so much harder to fight than cruelty ever was.

  • BETWEEN DEATH AND DESIRE    WHAT THE OLD MAN KNOWS

The healing rooms smell wrong tonight. Smoke instead of herbs, ash instead of salt.I run the whole way there, Kael at my side, Nyra close behind with her bag still bouncing against her hip even though she has not stopped to look at her own bruises yet.Guards line the corridor outside the door, torches shaking in their hands, and every single face I pass looks like it belongs to a man who has seen something he cannot unsee."He is inside," one of them says, stepping back to let us through. "But my lord — he does not have long. Smoke took his lungs bad."Kael does not answer. He shoves the door open, and I follow him in, and what I find on the other side nearly stops my heart in my chest.Elder Marrok lies on a narrow cot, a blanket pulled up to his throat, his skin gone the gray color of old ash. Every breath comes in short, wet pulls, the same sound Kael's breathing made the day I healed him by the fountain — except worse.Weaker. Like a man's body finally giving out after years of

  • BETWEEN DEATH AND DESIRE    THE GATES OF NIGHTVALE

We run.Nobody gives the order. Nobody has to. The moment that howl fades off the mountains, every wolf in the clearing turns toward the castle at the same time, like we are all one animal instead of a dozen separate ones, and then we are moving boots slamming into wet grass, torches swinging wild shadows across the dark, Kael out in front with his wolf half-shifted and his eyes burning bright enough to light his own way."Faster!" he shouts, and nobody wastes breath arguing.I run beside him, chest already aching, because Rue's body has never had to move like this before and it is learning the hard way, right now, in the worst possible moment. Riven keeps pace on my other side, jaw locked tight, his bandaged arm pressed close against his ribs.Behind us, Zevran and Nyra run without looking at each other, both of them carrying grief too raw to deal with on top of everything else happening tonight. The castle comes into view over the last rise, and my stomach drops all over again.Smo

  • BETWEEN DEATH AND DESIRE    THE PRICE ZEVRAN PAID

We do not run out of the forest. We walk instead, fast and tight together, shoulder to shoulder, nobody willing to be the one who falls behind. Kael's hand is locked around mine so hard it almost hurts, but I do not ask him to loosen it.I do not want him to. Some part of me is afraid that if he lets go, even for a second, the fog will reach out and pull me back the way it pulled Rue away from me, and I will not get a second chance to walk back out again.Nobody speaks. Not for a long time. The only sounds are our own boots on wet ground, Riven's ragged breathing beside us where he presses a hand hard against the cut on his arm, and somewhere behind all of it, so faint I could almost convince myself I am imagining it, that low, patient hum still coming from deep inside the black trees.Waiting. Unfinished. Not gone at all, just paused. The fog thins slowly. Stars come back first, small and cold and very far away. Then the black trees start to space themselves out, further and further

  • BETWEEN DEATH AND DESIRE    THE BLADE AND THE ALTAR

Time stops. That is the only way I know how to explain it, the world does not move for one long, endless second, everything frozen in place like a painting nobody finished.Kael, still on his knees. Seraphine, still smiling. The blade, still resting light against his throat, close enough that one small shift of her wrist would open him the same way something opened the throats of three dead wolves this past month."Do not move," Seraphine says, soft, almost bored, like she is talking about the weather instead of a man's life. "Wolves heal fast, Alpha, but not from this. Not fast enough.""Let him go." My voice comes out shaking, present tense and desperate, every word scraping past the light still wrapped warm and terrible around my throat. "This is between me and the forest. He has nothing to do with it.""Oh, but he has everything to do with it." Seraphine's pale green eyes slide to me, and there is real delight in them now, sharp and hungry. "You were about to finish the vow, litt

The words scrape out of me rough, because the light is already climbing my throat, already pressing against the place where my voice lives. "Do not come any

  • BETWEEN DEATH AND DESIRE    THE FACE IN THE FOG

"Zevran."His name comes out of me broken, half question, half accusation, because it cannot be him. It cannot be.He sat across from me in the library three days ago with sad eyes, talking about a promise he kept for five years. He gave me a name. He looked like a man carrying guilt, not a man carrying blood."Hello, Elara," he says again, and his voice is right. Every bit of it — the same lazy calm, the same warmth underneath the careless tone.Only his eyes are wrong. They catch the silver light off the altar and hold it too long, too still, like something behind them is watching through a window instead of living in the room."What are you doing here." My voice shakes even though I fight to keep it flat. "How did you even find this place?""I have always known where it is." He steps closer, unhurried, hands loose at his sides like we are still just two friends talking in a quiet library. "I have known since before you died the first time."The fog presses in tighter around us, clo
