"Congratulations Mrs.Rothschild, you're five weeks pregnant"
Octavia's eyes grew wide and she paled in shock.
Pregnant?
Her hand instantly clutched her stomach. She's pregnant...with Declan's child. Her child. Her once shocked face beamed. Joy filled her heart at the thought of a life growing inside and at the thought of her husband, Declan's reaction. This was what he ever wanted. To have a child of his own. An heir to take over his empire.
But she was scared. What if...he doesn't accept their child?
"Doctor, are you sure about this?" She licked her trembling lips.
The doctor nodded "The rest result confirmed it"
Octavia exhaled heavily. Finally. That night had led to this. Maybe...this will finally make Declan look at he with a smile. Tears welled her eyes at the thought of it.
The doctor studied her closely the lean forward slightly "You look overwhelmed"
That was an understatement.
Octavia let out a chuckle "It's just...a lot to process" she breathed.
The doctor smiled "It's normal to feel overwhelmed considering it's your first issue. But you shouldn't worry about anything. With the support of your husband and family, everything will go smoothly"
Octavia's smile did down. Support? The word made her almost laugh.
She was in a marriage that barely functioned, now carrying the child of a man who had never looked at her with love or even cared about her.
But maybe this was the answer to her prayer. Now that she can finally give him an heir, he will surely come to love. He will be so proud of her.
"In the meantime I will prescribe prenatal vitamins. You'll need t start taking them immediately. A healthy diet is pivotal and of course, you'll need to avoid alcohol and caffeine" The doctor's voice snapped her out of her thoughts.
" You'll also her to cut back on stress as much as possible..." The doctor continued and she nodded, though deep down she knew it was impossible to cut back on stress.
Being the only daughter-in-law of the Rothschild household came with a lot of responsibilities. And now that was carrying the Rothschild's heir, her mother-in-law, Victoria Rothschild will be at her neck. But none of that mattered. All Octavia could think of was how she will finally be free from a loveless marriage. As she left the hospital, her mind wandered back.
It's been five years since she has been existing beside Declan as a business trophy than an actual wife. And in all these years, he neglected her while dedicating his entire time to his empire and childhood friend, Vanessa, who was also his business partner. For five years, he never touched her. Yet that faithful night...
Her phone rang, startling her. She smiled as she glanced at the screen.
"Mom," she breathed, trying to keep her excitement in.
"Sweetheart, are you okay? Your voice sounds off"
"Mom...I...," she hesitated. "I'm pregnant" she finally mumbled.
" Oh, darling" her mother exclaimed.
Tears pricked Octavia's eyes "Mom, I've never been this happy as I am right now" she chuckled.
"I'm happy for you too, Sweetheart" her mother "But does Declan know?"
Octavia sighed "Not yet"
"Do you plan on telling him?"
"Yes, Mom. I can't wait to see the excitement on his face. He had always wanted an heir. Maybe...just maybe with this, he will finally come go to love me" she mumbled. "But what if he's disappointed?"
Her mother smiled "Oh, my dear. Your fear is understandable. You've always been strong and handling your responsibilities alone but this...this is no longer about just you. You never can tell until you tell him"
"I know" Octavia bit her lips, her emotions threatening to spill over "But what if this doesn't change anything? What if he doesn't care?"
Her mother hummed thoughtfully "Sometimes love start with a small crack. You won't know unless you try"
Octavia heaved " You're right, Mom"
“I am right.” There was a hint of a smile in her mother’s voice. “Now, how are you feeling? Any sickness?”
“A little nausea, but nothing too bad.”
“Good. And you’re taking care of yourself, right? Eating properly?”
“Yes, Mom.”
“Because I know you. You get stressed and forget to eat.”
“I’ll be careful, I promise"
Her mother sighed. “I wish I could be there with you.”
“I know,” Octavia said softly. “But don’t overwork yourself, okay? I know how you get.”
“Look who’s talking.”
Octavia laughed for the first time that evening. “I’ll tell him”
“Take your time, sweetheart. But don’t let fear make the decision for you.”
As the call ended, Octavia pulled up to the Rothschild estate, her heart pounding in her chest in excitement.
As she entered, the housekeeper, Mrs. Hawthorne, approached with her usual stiff demeanor. “Good evening, Mrs. Rothschild.”
“Good evening, Mrs. Hawthorne,” Octavia replied, her voice calm. “Is my husband home?”
“Yes, ma’am. He is in his study.” The housekeeper’s gaze flickered to the envelope in Octavia’s hands but, as always, she remained professional. “Shall I have tea brought to your room?”
Octavia hesitated. “No, thank you.”
Mrs. Hawthorne nodded “Very well, ma’am. If you need anything, you know where to find me.
“Thank you, Mrs. Hawthorne.”
Octavia moved through the dimly lit hallway, trying to remain as composed as possible though her heart thrummed in excitement and hope. She paused when she got the door.
"Calm down Octavia" she breathed out and pressed her lips together in an attempt to hide her broad smile.
But just as she was about to pull the door open,
She heard it.
Vanessa's voice.
Octavia froze outside the study.
"So, what are you going to do about Octavia? It's been five years already"
Silence stretched for a second too long, then Declan replied, his cold, void voice echoing
"What's there to do about her? She's just here to fulfill her duty as my wife"
"But the way she looks at you, Declan...she thinks you love her"
"She's naive and obedient. That's all that mattered"
Octavia almost stumbled, a sharp pain lodging itself beneath her ribs as Vanessa's mocking chuckle echoed.
"So why still keep her around? Do you love her?"
Declan scoffed "I can never love Octavia. She's nothing but a means to secure the Rothschild's Empire, a means to an heir who will take over"
Something inside Octavia shattered.
"And after she has given you an heir?" Vanessa asked.
"That's just it. She'll continue her duty as my wife and I'll carry out my duty as her husband"
Tears tumbled down Octavia's cheeks, her fragile hope shattered to pieces. Unable to listen any longer, sh turned and stumbled to her room.
Standing before the mirror and staring at the tears rolling down her cheek, she rubbed her stomach. Swallowing the painful lump in her throat, she muttered under her breath
"It's okay, baby. We don't him. I'll protect you from all of them...all on my own...
3 Years laterThe backyard was filled with laughter and the smell of grilled meat. The entire family had gathered for a barbecue to celebrate Kai’s full recovery and the quiet peace that had finally settled over them. Alexander flipped burgers on the grill while Sophia arranged plates and salads on the long wooden table. Seraphina and Sebastian ran around chasing each other with water guns, their shouts mixing with Kai’s giggles as he watched from a lawn chair, still a little tired but smiling brightly.Veronica had flown in just for the weekend. She stood beside Octavia, sipping lemonade and teasing her about the slight bump that was starting to show under her loose sundress.“You’re glowing, babe,” Veronica said, nudging her. “Seriously. Something is fishy. But first, please go to your man, he has been staring at you like you hung the moon all afternoon.”Octavia laughed nervously, her hand resting on her stomach.Declan walked over carrying a tray of fresh drinks, his eyes lighting
Declan’s eyelids fluttered open slowly. The hospital room was quiet, filled only with the soft beeping of machines and the warm afternoon light filtering through the blinds. His body felt heavy, every part of him aching, but the first thing he saw was Octavia. She was sitting in the chair beside his bed, her hand wrapped tightly around his. Her eyes were red from crying, but the moment she saw him awake, her face lit up with pure relief.“Declan?” she whispered, leaning forward. “Oh my God, you’re awake. You’re really awake.”Declan tried to speak, but his throat was dry. “Octavia…” His voice came out raspy. “You’re here.”Octavia laughed through her tears and kissed his forehead, then his hand. “Of course I’m here. I haven’t left your side. Not for one second. The doctors said you were fighting so hard. I knew you would come back to us.”Declan squeezed her hand weakly. “Seraphina… is she okay?”Octavia nodded, smiling. “She’s perfect. She’s with Alexander and Sophia right now. She k
Alastair drove away from the family estate with a satisfied smile on his face. The road was dark and empty, the city lights glowing in the distance. He turned on the radio and hummed along to the music, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel.“Finally,” he muttered to himself. “It’s done. Declan has nothing left. The empire is mine. Everything I worked for… it’s finally mine.”His phone rang. He glanced at the screen and saw it was one of his men. He answered with a lazy grin.“What is it?” Alastair asked. “Tell me the good news. Are they gone?”The voice on the other end was panicked and breathless. “Sir! There’s a problem! Some of the explosives, they were still wired to the car! The remote trigger is still active! You need to pull over right now!”Alastair’s smile faded. “What? What are you talking about?”“Sir, the explosives in the basement — one of the backup detonators was linked to your car! It’s going to—”Alastair’s eyes widened. “What?!”The line went dead.A split secon
Declan was already in his car, speeding toward the family estate when his phone rang again. It was the private investigator.“Mr. Rothschild,” the investigator said. “We cleaned up the audio from the car recording. The name is clear now. It’s Alastair. He’s the one who ordered the brake tampering. He wanted you dead.”Declan’s hands tightened on the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. “Alastair? My own brother wanted me dead?”“Yes, sir. The voice is unmistakable. I’m sending you the cleaned file right now.”Declan’s voice was filled with shock and deep pain. “Thank you. I have to go. I’ll deal with this.”He ended the call, his heart pounding. “Alastair… why? Why would you do this to me? To my family?”He reached the estate and ran inside. Alastair was waiting for him in the foyer, holding a laptop.“You came,” Alastair said. “Good. Sign the papers. Transfer everything to me. The company, the shares, the accounts. All of it.”Declan stared at him, his face filled with bet
Two days later, Alastair paced the length of his penthouse study, phone pressed to his ear. His jaw was clenched so tightly it ached. The call he had just received changed everything.“You’re sure?” Alastair asked, his voice low and dangerous. “Declan knows about the slush fund? He’s already moving to shut it down?”The voice on the other end confirmed it. “Yes, sir. He’s working with Thompson. They’re tracing the accounts quietly. He hasn’t mentioned your name yet, but it’s only a matter of time.”Alastair ended the call without another word. He threw the phone onto the desk and let out a sharp, angry laugh that echoed through the empty room.“So close,” he muttered. “I was so close. And now he’s trying to ruin it all.”He walked over to the bar and poured himself a drink, but instead of sipping it, he hurled the glass against the wall. It shattered into pieces.“I’ve planned this for months,” he said aloud, his voice rising. “Months of moving money, turning board members, positionin
Declan pulled up to Alexander’s house with Seraphina in the back seat. The little girl was still clinging to his arm, her eyes wide and scared from everything that had happened.“Uncle Alex is going to take care of you for a little while,” Declan said gently as he unbuckled her. “Mommy has a slight issue at the hospital, and I need to go be with her. But I’ll come back as soon as I can, okay?”Seraphina’s lip trembled. “Is Mommy going to be okay? I don’t want her to go away like the bad lady said.”Declan hugged her tightly. “Mommy is going to be fine. She’s strong, just like you. I promise I’ll bring her home soon. Now go inside with Uncle Alex. I love you so much.”Alexander was already waiting at the door. He took Seraphina’s hand and gave Declan a nod. “Go. I’ve got her. Keep us updated.”Declan kissed Seraphina’s forehead one more time and ran back to the car. He drove as fast as he could to the hospital, his heart pounding the entire way. When he burst into the emergency wing, a

AT THE LANCASTER MANSON “Seraphina!”A small gasp followed then footsteps. “No, Kai, give it back!”Kai giggled as he ran down the stairway with ease, holding something in his hand. Seraphina chased after him."Give it back!" she snapped, chasing him round the grand living room..“I found it first!
The sound of machines beeping lured Declan back into a world he never believed he would return to. His eyelids were too heavy, his brain fogged. But the smell of bleach and disinfectant was so strong it made him grimace. A groan passed his lips when he finally forced his eyes open and the blinding
