Toby.

Three Months Later

I sat alone in my apartment, brooding in silence.

I should have felt some sense of peace now that my company was no longer under threat. The leak had stopped and the danger was over.

Yet knowing why offered me no comfort.

My gaze lingered on the stack of documents spread across my desk while the evening news played mindlessly in the background.

My stopover in New York was only temporary, tomorrow, I would be flying to London to meet my brother Theron for the groundbreaking ceremony of our newest luxury hotel.

A hotel that would never have existed if Naila had succeeded.

A bitter laugh almost escaped me, me the CEO of Anetakis International.

I had been manipulated and betrayed made a fool of by the one woman I had allowed myself to trust.

Because of her, my brothers and I had lost two major architectural designs to our closest competitor before I had uncovered what I believed was her betrayal.

I should have handed her over to the authorities but instead I had been too stunned, too shocked, too angry and betrayed by her.

Even now, I hadn't gotten rid of the things she had left behind. Her clothes were still hanging in my closet and her books still sat on the shelf.

A bottle of her favorite perfume remained on the vanity in the bathroom.

I had convinced myself I was leaving everything untouched because I expected her to come back for it but if I was honest a small part of me had wanted her to come back.

I wanted one more chance to look her in the eye and ask the question that had haunted me for three months.

Why?

Why would you betray me?

My jaw tightened at the thought of even seeing her.

On my next trip home, I would throw everything away. It was time to erase every trace of her from my life.

Then I heard her name and at first, I thought my mind was playing tricks on me because I had been thinking about her constantly.

But then I heard it again.

"Naila Jameson"

My head snapped toward the television as a news reporter stood outside a local hospital.

For several seconds, the blood roared so loudly in my ears that I couldn't make out what he was saying.

The screen suddenly changed as footage rolled of paramedics carrying a woman on a stretcher out of a rundown apartment building and I immediately shot to my feet.

My heart stopped.

"Naila"

I grabbed the remote with trembling fingers and turned up the volume as my mind struggled to process what I was hearing.

Kidnapped, rescued, held captive.

The details were still unclear.

Authorities hadn't released information about who had taken her or why.

Only that she had endured months in captivity before finally being found.

My pulse hammered violently. Instinctively, I waited for my own name to be mentioned but It never came.

Why would it?

Our relationship had always been a secret.

That had been my choice.

Privacy wasn't a luxury in my world, it was a necessity and after what I had believed she had done to me, I had been grateful no one knew about us.

At least the world hadn't seen how completely she had humiliated me.

Then the camera zoomed in and my chest tightened painfully.

She looked exactly as she had the night I had thrown her out, except she was now pale and fragile, she looked terrified with the same haunted eyes, the same vulnerability I had forced myself to ignore.

Then the reporter said something that made the ground disappear beneath my feet.

"Both mother and child are listed in stable condition. Doctors say the months spent in captivity do not appear to have harmed the pregnancy."

Pregnancy, the word echoed inside my head.

The reporter continued speaking, estimating that she was now around four or five months pregnant and I heard nothing else.

My entire body went numb.

"Oh my goodness"

The whispered prayer escaped before I even realized I had spoken.

Pregnant.

Naila had been pregnant that night when I threw her out.

Everything was starting to make sense now, she had tried to talk to me and she had begged me to listen, she wanted to tell me something and my stomach twisted violently.

Was the baby mine?

I didn't waste another second.

I grabbed my phone and hurried toward the elevator.

By the time I reached the lobby, my driver had already pulled the car around.

I climbed into the back seat before the car had even come to a complete stop.

As we pulled away from the building, I flipped open my phone and called the hospital where Naila was admitted. I needed to see her.

TobyThe engines of my Gulfstream G700 hummed steadily as the aircraft taxied toward the runway and I stood at the bottom of the staircase, one hand resting on the polished railing while my security team loaded the last of our luggage.Stavros approached quietly."The perimeter has been cleared sir, we are ready for take off""No suspicious activity?" I asked looking around, He shook his head. "Nothing sir."That should have reassured me but it didn't.Whoever had left that photograph on my doorstep hadn't made a single mistake. They were disciplined and patient. People like that didn't simply disappear."They are ready, sir."I looked toward the black SUV that had just pulled onto the tarmac, the rear door opened first and Maria climbed out before turning to help Naila. She accepted the offered hand carefully, one palm instinctively cradling her stomach as she stepped onto the pavement. The morning breeze lifted strands of her dark curls around her face and for a moment, she simply

NailaThe room became unnaturally quiet, I looked down at the sketchbook resting in my hands, then back up at Toby. His face had gone completely still, he didn't seem mad, he seemed calm, too calm given everything we had just found out. "What is it?" I asked again. My fingers instinctively tightened around the sketchbook."You know this drawing, don't you."He didn't answer immediately.Instead, he walked toward me and slowly sat beside me on the edge of the bed."May I see it?"His voice was calm, almost too calm and I handed him the sketchbook. He turned back to the page I had stopped on that was titled Project Iris. His thumb brushed over the handwritten title."You drew this," he said quietly "I remember seeing you work on it.""I don't remember." A wave of frustration washed over me "I don't remember drawing any of these."I looked at the pages in disbelief. "They are actually really good." A faint smile touched his lips."They are more than good. You were one of the most talen

TobyI stood in front of the floor to ceiling windows of my office long after everyone had gone to bed.The lights of Manhattan glittered below, but my attention remained fixed on the security monitor mounted on the wall. One screen showed the lobby, the second one showed the private elevator and the third showed the hallway outside Naila's bedroom. She was asleep or at least pretending to be sleeping, but I knew she wasn't. Every few minutes she shifted beneath the blankets, her restless movements a reminder that sleep offered her little peace, I could tell she was still being haunted by everything that had happened to her. A knock interrupted my thoughts."Come in."Stavros entered first, followed by the head of my security team in Greece, Nikos, who had joined the meeting via video call."Everything is ready on the island, sir," Nikos reported. "The main villa has been swept twice, all the staff have been vetted again, and we have restricted access to the harbor.""Good.""I have

Naila"No!"The scream tore from my throat before I even realized I was awake. I sat upright in bed, my chest heaving as panic clawed through me.For one terrifying second, I didn't know where I was, the room was unfamiliar, silk curtains, cream colored walls, the expensive furniture. Then the bedroom door flew open."Naila."Toby crossed the room in seconds, dropping to his knees beside the bed."My love."His hands hovered uncertainly over my shoulders."Can you hear me?"I couldn't answer, my entire body was shaking, there had been a little girl, i knew there had been, she had been crying.I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to hold onto the memory before it disappeared."Please" I whispered "Don't make me forget again."Toby's expression changed immediately."What did you remember Naila?""There was "I swallowed against the lump in my throat "A child."His brows drew together in confusions, "A child?"I nodded frantically "A little girl. She couldn't have been older than six. I think"

TobyThe apartment fell silent and no one moved or spoke for a few seconds. The words "We have found a witness" seemed to echo through every room. The detective standing in my foyer removed his cap before stepping inside."Mr. Anetakis." His gaze swept over everyone gathered in the living room before settling briefly on Naila."I'm Detective Marcus Hale."Naila offered him a hesitant smile."Have we met before?"Something flickered across his face."Only briefly, you were unconscious."She nodded, looking almost relieved that she hadn't forgotten another important person."I understand this isn't the best time," he continued, addressing me, "but this couldn't wait."I gestured toward my office."We will talk in private.""No." Naila's voice stopped both of us as she slowly rose from the sofa."I want to hear whatever he has to say.""Naila" I crossed the room instinctively "You have had enough excitement for one day.""I'm tired of everyone deciding what I can and cannot handle Toby.

NailaThe room began to spin, I did not hear him right. I looked from the younger man to Toby, searching desperately for someone to tell me I had misunderstood what he had just said but no one did. "What did you just say?"My voice sounded distant, almost as if someone else had spoken. The younger man Piers didn't look the least bit apologetic by what he had just said to me."I said that's enough." Toby's voice cracked through the room like a whip but Piers didn't even flinch."No." He folded his arms across his chest. "I'm done pretending this never happened and it needs to be addressed before it happens again. Naila deserves to know who everyone believes she is and we deserve to know what happened, who she was working for, for all we know she might still be working with them""I said stop it!" Toby's voice thundered through the room once more. I turned slowly toward Toby, "Is it true?" He didn't answer immediately but his silence was answer enough. My pulse began pounding inside my
