THE LAST WING

*7:50 AM. Sewer Level 5, Melbourne.*

The heat was the first thing that hit them.

Not normal heat. This was wet, heavy, and wrong. Like standing inside an animal. The walls weren’t stone anymore. They pulsed. Black veins ran through pink, fleshy tissue.

The chanting shook the ground. Low. Constant. Words that made your teeth hurt.

Lily pressed her face into Ethan’s jacket. "I don’t like this place."

"We’re almost done." Ethan said. His voice was rough. He was running on empty after Crystal Man, but he didn’t show it. "Just one more."

Selena walked in front, katana ready. Her bandaged hand was tight around the hilt. "Ritual room is through here. I can feel the Shard."

The last door was wrong. It wasn’t built. It was grown. Bone and black metal fused together. Carved into it were wings. Hundreds of them, overlapping.

There was a panel with 3 keyholes.

Selena pulled out the keys. One from Mara. One from Crystal Man. She clicked them in.

Click. Click.

The door didn’t open.

"We need the third." She said quietly. "The one he has."

Ethan pushed. The door groaned and opened.

Inside was a nightmare.

A giant chamber. Red fog at the top. Below, a pit 20 meters deep. At the bottom, an altar made of black crystal.

On the altar: The Black Moon Shard. And around it, a circle of 100 smaller crystals. All of them glowing. All of them feeding the Shard with thin lines of red light.

Standing on the edge of the pit was Winged Boy.

He looked almost normal. Young. Clean shirt. Calm face. Except for his back.

Two massive wings. Black. Leathery. Like a bat but bigger. Each one could cover a car. They twitched, shedding dust.

Below him, rows of Cult members knelt and chanted. And chained to the walls, 20 people. Men, women. Eyes closed. Their faces pale. Thin red lines connected them to the altar.

The air tasted like copper.

Winged Boy turned his head. He smiled.

"You’re late." He said. "We’re at halfway. 50%."

Ethan stepped forward, putting himself between him and Lily. "It ends here."

Winged Boy sighed. "Does it have to? The world was broken before we came. Wars. Hunger. Lies. We’re fixing it."

"By killing people?" Selena asked.

"By making them better." He gestured with one wing. The wind pushed back the red fog. "No more sickness. No more fear. One mind. One moon. Peace."

"That’s not peace." Ethan said. "That’s control."

Winged Boy’s smile dropped. "Then we have nothing to talk about."

He snapped his fingers.

The chanting stopped. The Cult members stood. The red lines to the prisoners got brighter. The people on the walls screamed.

"Last chance." Winged Boy said. "Join me. Be part of the new world."

Lily shook her head behind Ethan. "No."

Winged Boy looked almost sad. "Shame."

---

*THE FIGHT*

He didn’t walk. He flew.

One beat of his wings and the air exploded. He crossed the chamber and his foot came down where Ethan’s head had been.

Ethan rolled. The floor cracked.

"Fast." Ethan said, getting up.

"Too fast for you." Winged Boy was already in the air again, a blur.

He hit Selena first. A backhand that sent her flying into a pillar.

He kicked Ethan in the chest. Sent him sliding.

They tried to team up. It didn’t work.

He was everywhere. Above, behind, in front. His talons left cuts on both of them in seconds.

Selena’s katana broke against his wing.

Ethan’s knife found nothing but air.

"We can’t keep this up." Selena gasped, blood on her chin.

Winged Boy landed in front of them. "You’re tired. I can tell. The bond is draining you."

He was right. They were slow. Hurt.

Ethan looked past him. At the altar. At the Shard.

That was it. He couldn’t beat the man. But he could break the thing.

"Distract him." Ethan whispered to Selena.

She understood immediately. "You got it."

She charged. Screaming. Broken katana in hand.

Winged Boy laughed and met her. "Finally some spirit."

They clashed. Steel on talon.

Ethan ran.

Cult members moved to block him. He didn’t stop. He cut, shoved, ran.

He reached the edge of the pit and jumped.

He landed next to the altar. The heat was insane. The Shard was humming.

The Black Moon Shard. The source of all of this.

His hand shook. If he broke this, what happened to the people connected to it? To Selena? To him?

The Shard pulsed. Like it was listening.

_Break me._

The thought wasn’t his.

Ethan didn’t wait. He raised his knife and brought it down with everything he had.

The sound was awful. Like the world cracking.

The Shard split in half.

Then exploded into dust.

For one second, total silence.

Then Winged Boy screamed.

He was holding Selena by the throat. When the Shard broke, he let go and dropped. Like his strings were cut.

He hit the ground and thrashed. His wings spasmed. Feathers and black dust fell from them.

"No... no... the power..." He clawed at his back. "It’s gone..."

The red lines to the prisoners vanished. The people slumped, breathing.

The Cult members all collapsed at once.

The red fog began to clear.

Selena crawled to Ethan. "You did it."

Ethan was on his knees, staring at the dust where the Shard had been. "I think so."

Winged Boy was still on the ground. His wings were ruined. Torn and bleeding. He tried to stand but couldn’t.

He looked up at Ethan with pure hate. "You idiot. Without the Moon to control them... the Infected will lose their minds. They’ll kill everything."

"Then we’ll stop them too." Ethan said.

Winged Boy laughed, bitter. "Good luck." Then he passed out.

*THE AFTERMATH*

It took an hour to get everyone out.

Captain’s team came down with lights and medics. They carried the 20 prisoners out first. Then they cuffed the unconscious Cult.

Selena found the third key on Winged Boy. She used it on a hidden door at the back of the chamber.

Inside: a small office. Tables covered in maps, files, and a thick black book.

"Their records." Selena said, flipping through it. "Names. Locations. Other cells."

Ethan took the book. "This is how we end them. All of them."

They climbed back to the surface.

Melbourne looked different. The sky wasn’t black anymore. It was gray. Cloudy. But you could see it.

And the moon. The black circle in the middle was smaller. Fading.

Lily sat on a piece of concrete, drinking water. "Is it really over, bro?"

Ethan sat next to her. Selena on his other side. "The ritual is over. Yes."

"But there’s still Infected." Selena added. "And other Cult groups. This was just one."

Ethan nodded. "One at a time."

They sat in silence for a bit. Watching the sky get lighter.

Selena leaned her head against Ethan’s shoulder. "We did good."

"We did." Ethan squeezed her hand. The bond between them felt warm. Calm. For the first time in days.

Captain walked over. "Medical teams are here. You three need to get checked."

"We will." Ethan said.

The Captain looked at the fading moon. "You stopped it. I didn’t think anyone could."

"We had help." Ethan said.

As the sun broke through the clouds, the three of them stood up.

It wasn’t over. The world was still broken. There were still monsters. Still fights.

But today, they won.

And that was enough.

[THE BLACK MOON: FADING]

[NEXT: REBUILD]`

They walked away from the sewer entrance. Away from the blood and the dark.

Into the gray morning.

But he turned his head like he could see them perfectly.Between them, on a stone pedestal, the Red Shard. It was alive. It grew an inch every few seconds. Veins of light crawled up it and into the sky.Lily was behind Ethan. Her hand on his back. Bro..."I got you." Ethan didn’t look back. "Stay behind me."The old man tilted his head. • BLACK MOON APOCALYPSE ..   TRAIN TO BRISBANE

*6:00 AM. Train to Brisbane.* The train shook. Not bad. Just enough to remind you it was moving. Ethan sat by the window. Outside was nothing but gray. Burned fields. Broken houses. And far in the distance, smoke. Melbourne was 4 hours behind them now. Lily was asleep on the seat across from him, head on Selena’s lap. Selena was awake. Cleaning her broken katana with a rag. The blade would never be the same but it would cut. The train had 4 cars. First car: engine and 2 soldiers. Second car: them. Third and fourth: empty. Sealed. "How long?" Ethan asked. Selena checked her watch. "14 hours. If the tracks are clear." Ethan nodded. He hadn’t slept well. Every sound made him reach for his knife. The radio on the table crackled. Captain’s voice. "Team Alpha, report." Ethan picked it up. "We’re 200km out of Melbourne. No problems." "Good. Brisbane is quiet. Too quiet. Our people there lost contact 2 days ago." Selena stopped cleaning. "Lost contact?" "Last message said: ‘Th

Captain’s soldiers. Medics. Survivors crawling out of shelters. The black moon was still there. But it was small now. Faint. Or what was left of it. The blade was chipped in 3 places. "We’ll get food soon."Ethan stood a few feet away. The black journal in his hands. He hadn’t opened it yet. He just stared at the sky."Never thought I’d miss this." He said quietly.Selena looked up. "The sky?""Blue." Ethan said. "I thought it would be red forever."Selena stood and walked to him. She

Don’t let anyone interrupt."Ethan wanted to argue. The bond between them was screaming warning. But Selena’s eyes left no room for debate."Fine." He exhaled. "But if you’re not out in 10 minutes, I’m breaking that door down."Selena gave a small smirk. "You won’t need to."She pushed the door open. It groaned on old hinges.Inside was a circular arena.
