ELENA'S POV:

Hating someone feels disturbingly similar to being in love with them.

In the past week, I managed to compare what I felt for Dimitri, to what I was expected to feel for him and my observation was just messed up.

Love and hate are visceral. My stomach turns and twists at the thought of Dimitri. The heart in my chest beats heavy and bright, nearly visible through my flesh and clothes and I'm on the brink of fight or flight.

My appetite and sleep are shredded.

Every interaction spi

ELENA'S POV"You wish to study in an institution, Mrs. Volkov, why?"—was saying because my husband brought me here, too much of a reply to give? Maybe not.I cleared my throat. "I am a natural law enthusiast," I said and glanced at Dimitri who was seated on the only chair in the room. Dimitri was no one you could pick out of a crowd, until you noticed the shrewd, rock hard eyes, and his immobile face and long jagged scar. Hiding my nervousness, I turned my attention back to the Registrar, who was nodding thoughtfully at something on his computer. He looked up after a minute. "We'll have all your documents processed and sent over to you by mail, Mrs. Volkov. Thank you for considering our University."My heart leaped. "Just like that?"The Registrar chuckled softly and glanced briefly at my husband — sorry, Dimitri — well, he was my husband anyway. The look in his eyes made me understand almost immediately. Dimitri had done some things behind the scenes to get me into the school. Th

  • BLOOD AND VOWS   Mine!

DIMITRI'S POV: I held the car door for her and smiled softly as she walked in with barely a nod in my direction. Elena Volkov. The name suited her just right even though she'd never want to admit to anyone, she loved it. Really loved it. I climbed into my side of the car and started it up, with a tug at the handgears, I reversed the automobile out of my garage and eased it towards the open gate and road beyond. "Where is this school you're taking me?" She asked, three minutes into the ride. "It's in the outskirts of town, The Chicago Central University." I replied, glancing briefly at her. Her face was so innocent and beautifully pure that made me want to reach out and cradle it with my palms. She was an angel. Matteo was right. Elena was fucking beautiful. "I would appreciate it if you don't look at me like that." She snapped, turning her face away to the window. I dropped one hand off the steering wheel, and reached for her hands with it. The contact shocked her,

  • BLOOD AND VOWS   Mrs Volkov

ELENA'S POV:When I woke up the next morning, Dimitri was gone. His side of bed lay crumpled and there was no sign of him even in the bathroom or anywhere else in the room. When I came downstairs later, the scent of coffee and something even sweeter immediately made me hurry down to the dinning room, But Dimitri wasn't there.Pans were clanking in the kitchen and as I turned the corner, I found a small, plump woman who looked old enough to be my Grandma at the stove, making pancakes. Her dark grey hair was secured with a hairnet and Umberto was perched on a stool at the bar attached to the kitchen island, a cup of coffee in front of him. He turned when I approached. His eyes took in my nightgown in one look before he turned, jerking his head away to the opposite direction. What the heck! The woman turned to face me, her face breaking into a smile. “You must be Elena, the new mistress.” She said.I managed a small smile. “Yes, I am.”She nodded. “ I'm Marianna. Yvvette had some busine

  • BLOOD AND VOWS   Let Myself Breathe

ELENA'S POV:The relaxation I'd felt during the car ride evaporated the moment, Dimitri and I returned to the towering, imposing mansion.I went into the bathroom immediately. I stepped into the bedroom and took my time getting ready before I returned.Dimitri's eyes took in my long dark satin gown. It reached my calves but had a slit that went up to my thighs. The desire in his eyes made my stomach churn in alarm.I looked away before his eyes could make me forget what I had been thinking about all evening.“I’ll have Yvvette prepare something for you, so you don't get hungover.” He said finally, laughing softly at me and he pushed off from the armchair he was sitting in and walked past me into the bathroom.“I don't want anything.” I called after him, before making my way towards the window and busied myself with watching the nightly skyline. I was almost as nervous as that first night. This was the first time in days that we were sharing the same space without tension pulling us ap

My appetite and sleep are shredded.Every interaction spikes my blood with a dangerous kind of adrenaline. The sheer terror of him scares me. But that wasn't anymore, well— I was going to turn that fucking tide around. The car slowed down in front of an Asian Restaurant on the outskirts of town. Umberto rushed out to help me hold the door but I beat him to it, before he could run over.He looked uneasily at me then back at the restaurant I was heading for, then with another fluid swift motion, he took out a handkerchief and wiped his face helplessly.

  • BLOOD AND VOWS   Firm Resolve

ELENA'S POV:"So when you ask me if I feel like I have immense power, dear wife. My answer is yes. I want to possess things and I want things to go my way, I am a mob boss after all." He said, pausing to laugh at the last word like it was a dry joke, before continuing. "And whatever you think of me as. Your opinion wouldn't change anything about what I do or how I do it."He smiled at me, but again the smile didn't touch his eyes."Now if you'll stop gaping and eat your food. I think we can make progress with our discussion." He pointed out.It was only then I realized I hadn't been eating, I dropped the fork back on the plate with a clatter and reached for the glass of orange juice Yvette had brought when she came in earlier.I swallowed hard before gulping down the juice. The temperature in the room was rising or maybe it was just me. I wanted desperately to pull back my seat and scurry off the table but for the first time in a long while, I found myself doing just the opposite. The
