ISABELLA

The breakthrough happens at exactly four o'clock in the morning.

"I have it," Dominik says. His voice is a hoarse, vibrating rasp.

Luca is in the room instantly, stepping out of the armory.

"The engraving inside the band was a masterful piece of misdirection. It was a layered cipher. The first sequence decoded into a precise set of GPS coordinates. The second sequence, nested directly inside the first, yielded a six-digit combination."

"Where do the coordinates lead?" Luca asks, his voice entirely stripped of emotion, pure tactical focus taking over.

"Montauk," Dominik answers, tapping the screen to bring up a satellite map. A small, gray pin drops onto the far eastern edge of Long Island. "It’s a highly exclusive, privately owned bank. The coordinates point to their subterranean vault. The combination is for a specific safe deposit box inside."

"Enzo," Luca barks, his mind already moving ten steps ahead of the map. "Assemble the secondary extraction team. I want four men in heavily armored vehicles moving out to Long Island immediately. We split the operation. We hit the clinic here in the city, and the secondary team secures the ledger in Montauk before Viktor's seventy-two-hour clock runs out."

"No." The single word leaves my mouth before I even realize I have made the decision.

Luca stops. Enzo, already reaching for his encrypted radio, freezes with his hand hovering over his tactical vest. The entire room looks at me.

"Isabella," Luca says, his tone perfectly measured but carrying the distinct edge of a commander who is not used to having his orders countermanded in his own war room. "The Volkovs are actively hunting for that document. Viktor is waiting for it. The ledger is our ultimate leverage. We cannot afford to leave it sitting in a vault when we have the exact location."

"The ledger has been sitting in that vault for five years," I reply, my voice completely steady. I step around the console, placing myself directly in his line of sight. "It can wait another forty-eight hours. What Marcus built in that sub-level cannot."

Luca’s jaw tightens. "Splitting the team gives us the tactical advantage of simultaneous acquisition. We eliminate the risk of the Russians finding the bank while we are occupied downtown."

"If we split the team, we go into the clinic raid at half strength," I counter, refusing to back down an inch. I look directly into his icy blue eyes. "You said it yourself—Hartwell Medical Associates is a fortified Russian stronghold. We need every single gun, every single piece of armor, and every ounce of focus on that building. The ledger is politics, Luca. The clinic is blood."

Luca closes his eyes for half of a second, exhaling a slow, controlled breath. When he opens them, the commander has yielded to the partner.

"Enzo," Luca says, his eyes never leaving mine. "Adjust the orders. Send a two-man reconnaissance detail to Montauk. They’re to establish a secure perimeter outside the bank and monitor all incoming and outgoing traffic. They don’t enter the building or approach the vault. We take the entire primary strike team to the clinic tonight. We get the ledger tomorrow."

Enzo nods once, a short, sharp motion, and strides out of the room to execute the new directive.

The tension in the suite dissolves into rapid, purposeful movement as Mara begins pulling up the traffic grid around the clinic. As the team preps for the impending operation, I hang back and pull Dominik aside.

The cryptographer looks exhausted, leaning heavily against his workstation and rubbing his eyes beneath his wire-rimmed glasses.

"How did you break it?" I ask him quietly. "You said the encryption was a very old, very paranoid system."

Dominik nods, reaching into a velvet pouch on his desk and retrieving my heavy gold signet ring. He holds it carefully between his ink-stained fingers.

"It’s a variation of a Vigenère cipher," Dominik explains, his voice keeping low so as not to disturb the surrounding chaos. "It’s a grounded, analogue method of cryptographic substitution. No digital footprint, no hackable servers. It’s entirely uncrackable unless you possess the specific keyword used to shift the alphabet. I ran thousands of permutations based on Russian military codes, historical Syndicate dates, and your father's known aliases. None of them worked."

"Then how did you find the key?" I ask, my brow furrowing.

Dominik looks at me, a profound, quiet sadness settling into his tired eyes. "I stopped thinking like a cryptographer trying to outsmart a crime boss, and I started thinking like a paranoid man trying to leave a message for his only child. He keyed the cipher to a word that only his blood would know." Dominik holds the ring out to me. "The keyword was your mother's maiden name."

The breath leaves my lungs as if I have just been struck.

I reach out with a trembling hand and take the cold gold ring from his palm.

My father. The terrifying, ruthless head of the Romanov Syndicate who built an empire on violence, fear, and control.

He had taken the deadliest secret on the East Coast, the ultimate weapon and he had encrypted it with the name of the only woman he ever truly loved.

He forged it into a piece of jewelry, and handed it to his teenage daughter with strict instructions to never take it off.

I stare at the double-headed eagle stamped into the gold.

I slide the ring slowly back onto my finger. It’s mine.

I turn away from the workstation and walk into the armory.

Luca is standing by the steel table, loading heavy armor-piercing rounds into a high-capacity magazine. He’s already wearing his tactical vest over a dark shirt.

I walk up to the table. I pick up the compact nine-millimeter handgun he gave me. I eject the magazine, check the brass casings, slap it back into the grip, and rack the slide with a sharp, metallic crack.

Luca looks up at the sound.

He looks at the gun in my hand, and then he looks at the gold ring on my finger. Our eyes meet across the table covered in weapons and ammunition.

There’s no trace of the suffocating desire from last night. The charged, desperate tension of the dark room has been completely sublimated into something colder, sharper, and infinitely more dangerous.

It’s a quiet, absolute acknowledgment.

I slip the gun into the holster at my hip. Through the small, barred window near the ceiling of the warehouse, the sky begins to bleed.

The sun is going down and the raid begins.

  • BLOOD, LIES, AND THE ROMANOV HEIR   The Calm Before

ISABELLATomorrow, we breach Hartwell Medical Associates. Tomorrow, we rip the sterile mask off the facility where my husband spent three years and two million dollars of Russian money turning my tragedy into a transaction.I run through the tactical plan Enzo laid out earlier, checking and rechecking entry vectors, exfiltration routes and blind spots in the camera grid but it’s not enough to quiet my mind.I give up on trying to sleep. I wrap the thick wool blanket tighter around my shoulders and walk out to the corridor.I find Luca in the main surveillance room entirely alone standing over the primary console, his hands braced flat against the metal edge of the desk, staring intently at a satellite image of the clinic's perimeter. "The structural blueprints for the main floor don’t align with the foundation load-bearing walls," Luca says quietly. "They excavated the sub-level after the primary construction was

ISABELLAThe encrypted drive we took from Marcus's penthouse is a digital autopsy.I spend the entire next day sitting in the harsh, light of the surveillance suite, dissecting the rotting corpse of my marriage line by line. I work directly alongside Mara Chen. Luca’s intelligence chief is a machine wrapped in a dark cashmere turtleneck—brilliant, devastatingly efficient, and giving absolutely nothing away. Her fingers fly across her mechanical keyboard, pulling back the layers of Marcus's carefully constructed financial illusions. The drive contains years of meticulous records. We find the web of shell companies Marcus used to slowly siphon money from the dormant Romanov trust. We track the heavy wire transfers bouncing through blind accounts in Cyprus and the Cayman Islands. Then, we find the direct communications with Sergei Volkov. They’re buried under layers of encryption, disguised as mundane corporate

  • BLOOD, LIES, AND THE ROMANOV HEIR   Inner Circle

ISABELLA The second Moretti safe house is buried deep in the garment district. A state-of-the-art surveillance suite encased in reinforced steel walls. Luca guides me through a heavy biometric security door into the main operations room. A bank of glowing monitors covers the far wall, displaying live feeds of the city. This’s the nerve center and these are the people who run it. Without wasting time, Luca introduces me to the inner circle of his operation, the three people I’ll have to trust if I’m going to survive the ticking clock Viktor started. Enzo Ferrara, the head of security, the man who helped us breach the penthouse, and he is built like a commercial refrigerator. Mara Chen, Luca's intelligence chief. She’s sharp, quiet, and impeccably dressed in a dark turtleneck. Finally, there is Dominik Romi. He’s a wiry, nervous energy of a man

  • BLOOD, LIES, AND THE ROMANOV HEIR   The Uncle and the Ex

ISABELLA Six red laser sights cut through the settling dust, painting bright, lethal targets across my shoulders and Luca's chest. Luca stands immovably, arm is fully extended, his grip on his heavy pistol absolutely steady, the barrel aimed dead center at Viktor's forehead. He doesn’t speak or issue threats. The Ghost of the East Coast simply waits for a reason to pull the trigger. Marcus is still kneeling on the floor, his breath coming in shallow, pathetic wheezes. Sarah is weeping silently behind the glass desk. I’m standing in the middle of a war zone, holding the encrypted drive containing my husband's destruction in my left hand, and my own compact handgun in my right. Viktor ignores the gun pointed at his head. He leans slightly his weight on his silver wolf's-head cane and looks only at me. "Put the gun down, little bird," Viktor says

  • BLOOD, LIES, AND THE ROMANOV HEIR   The Reckoning Begins

ISABELLALuca is already awake and fully dressed, as he speaks in low, rapid Italian into the secure burner phone. He hangs up and turns around and his eyes are completely stripped of the raw hunger I saw last night. "Enzo just relayed the latest intelligence," Luca says, his voice flat. "Your husband has been extremely busy.” “Ex husband,” I counter“Right. Marcus is in direct contact with Sergei Volkov. They’ve finalized an arrangement. Marcus intends to hand you, and the Romanov ring, over to the Russians in exchange for ten million dollars and safe passage out of the country."A small laugh escapes me. The betrayal doesn’t even sting anymore. "He sold me.""He thinks he did," Luca corrects smoothly. "But my network found something much more concerning than your ex husband's greed. We pulled the architectural blueprints for the fertility clinic where you were treated. Six months a
