The elevator doors slid shut with a soft ding, cutting off Obasi’s face.

Zara couldn’t breathe. The air in the car felt too thin, too hot.

“Was that a threat?” Damian asked. His voice was calm. Too calm. The kind of calm that came right before a storm.

“That was a promise,” Obasi’s voice echoed in her head. “24 hours. DNA or blood.”

Then the elevator kept going down, taking him away, but not the fear.

Zara’s knees buckled.

Marcus caught her before she hit the marble floor. His arms

The gates of House Virel didn’t open with keys. They opened with blood.Lyra stood in front of the black iron doors with her palm already cut. The knife was small, silver, and cold. Three drops. That was the rule. Her blood hit the stone and the gates shuddered. Chains rattled. The doors pulled inward with a sound like breathing.Inside, torches burned blue.“Last chance to run,” Kael said behind her. “I’m not running.”He was her guide. Her shadow. The only one who believed she wasn’t lying about the swap. Two years ago, Lyra Virel died in a carriage accident. Two years ago, a girl with no name woke up in her body.Same face. Same blood. Different soul. The Virel bloodline had a problem. It could tell.“Step forward, Impostor,” a voice echoed from the hall.Lord Virel. Her father. Except he wasn’t.The real Lord Virel died with her. This man had his face, his voice, his cruelty. But his eyes were wrong. Empty. The hall was full. Every Virel cousin, aunt, and blade-for-hire sto

  • BLOODLINE SWAP   CHAPTER 9: THE WAIT

Hour 1. 11:04PM.No one slept. Zara lay in the middle of the king bed, staring at the ceiling. To her left, Damian. To her right, Marcus. Neither of them touched her. But both of them were awake. The gun on the nightstand caught the light from the hallway and glinted every few seconds. “Stop looking at it,” Marcus said into the dark. His voice was rough from no sleep. “How do you know I’m looking at it?” Zara whispered back. “Because I’m looking at it too,” Marcus said. Damian sighed from the other side. “Both of you. Try to sleep. We have 47 hours left before the results come back.” No one did. The only sound was the AC and Zara’s breathing. Too fast. Hour 6. 6:14AM.Zara bolted to the bathroom and threw up. Again. Just water and bile. Her stomach had been empty since yesterday. “Zara?” Marcus was at the door in two seconds. Knocking. “I’m fine,” she called, voice hoarse. She wiped her mouth and flushed. When she came out, Damian was in the kitchen. He’d mad

His arms were solid, fast. “You’re shaking,” Marcus said against her ear. “I’m fine,” Zara lied. Her voice shook. Damian was already pacing, phone to his ear. “Cancel everything today. Book the private lab in Ikoyi. No. The other one. The one Obasi doesn’t own. I don’t care how much it costs.” He hung up and looked at her. “We leave in ten.” NIMC PRIVATE LAB. IKOYI. 10:12AM.White walls. White coats. The smell of antiseptic and money. Three people who couldn’t stand each other, standing in on

  • BLOODLINE SWAP   CHAPTER 7: THE HOTEL ROOM

The rain hit like bullets. Zara was soaked before she made it from the car to the hotel. Marcus had his jacket over her head. It didn’t help.“Damian booked 2 rooms,” Marcus said. “One for you. One for me.”“Where’s his?” Zara asked, teeth chattering.“Penthouse floor,” Marcus said. “We’re on 12.”The elevator dinged. The moment the doors opened, the lights died. Black.“Generator should kick in,” Marcus said, hand on Zara’s back.It didn’t.“Stay here,” Marcus said. “I’ll check the hallway.”Zara grabbed his sleeve. “No.”“Zara—”“I’m not staying alone,” Zara said.Marcus sighed. “Fine. Room.”Room 1204.Marcus swiped the card. Nothing. “Power’s out,” he said, pushing the door open manually. Dark. It smelled like rain and hotel soap.Zara fumbled for her phone. Flashlight on. One bed. King size. One tiny couch. One bathroom.“Shit,” Zara said.“What?” Marcus asked.

Zara hated red. Too loud. Too much. Too "look at me".But the dress Damian sent was red. Silk. Slit to the thigh. Back out.“Ma’am,” the stylist said. “Turn.”Zara turned. The mirror hated her. Her bump wasn’t showing yet—just seven weeks. But the dress hugged her stomach anyway.I look like bait.Marcus knocked once, then walked in. He stopped. Sunglasses in hand. Gun under his jacket. His eyes went from her shoes to her face, then back down.“You’re wearing that,” Marcus said. Flat.“Damian said I have to,” Zara said, picking at the strap. “It’s for the gala.”Marcus’s jaw ticked. “It’s for him.”“What?”“Nothing,” Marcus said. “We’re leaving in five.”Eko Hotel. Victoria Island.Chandeliers. Champagne. Women in diamonds. And Damian—black tux, no tie. Like he owned the air.The moment Zara walked in on Marcus’s arm, the room turned. Whispers. Phones. *Who’s that?*Damian’s eyes found her. Went cold. Then hot. He crossed the room in four steps.“Took you long enough,” Damian said to

  • BLOODLINE SWAP   CHAPTER 5: THE WARNING

Zara hated the penthouse by day three.Too quiet. Too big. Too many people calling her ma’am.“Ma’am, breakfast.” “Ma’am, your schedule.” “Ma’am, Damian said—”She wasn’t ma’am. She was twenty-four, broke, and pregnant.“Can you all stop calling me that?” Zara said at breakfast. The housekeeper blinked. “Yes, ma’am.”God.Damian had already left for a 5am meeting. Marcus sat at the kitchen island with coffee and his gun right next to it. Like that was normal.“Morning,” Marcus said.“Morning,” Zara replied, grabbing a piece of toast. “I need to go out.”“No,” Marcus said.“I need groceries,” Zara lied. “For Tolu. She’s out of meds.”Marcus sipped his coffee. “I’ll send someone.”“I’ll go,” Zara insisted. “You can come if you’re that worried.”Marcus stared at her. “You’re serious.”“I’m serious,” she said. “I’m not a prisoner.”Marcus sighed. “Fine. Thirty minutes. And you wear this.”He tossed her a heavy bulletproof jacket.Zara put it on. “I look like a tank.”“You look safe,” Ma
