DAMIAN

Amaya had been out for a while, shivering and hot and it felt like she was getting worse every minute, was she really sick and not pretending.

Why didn't she say anything then?

Is that why she wasn't eating and wanted to stay.

Little whimpers made me turn and as I suspected it was coming from Amaya. She was now sweating profusely and mumbling something.

"Amaya" I called out softly but she didn't respond

"can you hear me?" I asked , still no response

She jerked up and ran to the bathroom, I followed her closely, still shocked by her sudden movement.

"Amaya?" I called out, when she didn't respond I pushed the door open only to see her weakly sitting and throwing up.

The best I could do was hold her hair back, when she was done, she turned back to look at me "please" she said in a voice that made my heart shatter, trying to understand what she meant, I felt her body go limp.

Had she passed out again?

At this point, I couldn't think of anything, I tried to wash her up but only decided to wash her face out of fear to not make the fever cold

"Doris bring comfortable clothes" I ordered and she bowed and quickly went into the closet.

Doris came back with what looked like a kids pyjamas set pink and white striped pants and a light pink pyjama top

"young madam only liked colourful sleepwear sir" Doris said probably reading the confusion on my face

"okay then, drop it and you can leave" I said without even looking up

she did as I asked and left, I tried to wake Amaya but the moment I tapped her she started mumbling again, giving up I unzipped her dress and took off her jewelry, put her hair in a bun, I tried replicating what I saw earlier but I couldn't, so I settled whatever I could.

Amaya. wait a moment, I need to take off your dress, then she mumbled something " no don't touch me"

her mutters changed from being incomprehensible to sounding like sobs

"Amaya calm down, I just need to get you changed, it's fine" I said trying to calm her down

" Don't touch me" she said weakly pushing my hands away

whilst struggling, I noticed she was struggling to breath.

Reaching her hands to the bedside table but failing she cried more struggling to breath, she was mumbling something "in-inhaler, can-can't b-b-breath"

Inhaler?, was she asthmathic?

quickly pulling open the bedside drawer, a pink inhaler casing laid there.

"Amaya sit up" I said trying to sit her up, all she did was cry and hyperventilate

"Amaya please" finally sitting her up, helping her use the inhaler, her breathing was finally stabilized

"don't leave please" she muttered

torn between deciding if this was one of her tricks or she really needed help, I decided to stay not knowing why but I decided to stay, I just couldn't get myself to leave atleast not right now

AMAYA

My head was throbbing, the light from the window directly pointed to my face, the flowers in my room had been changed, what happened last night I couldn't remember how I got to my room.

My pyjamas were on and my room was clean, all my stuff put away, but how and when did I change.

Standing up I stumbled a bit

"Amaya, sit." A hand grabbed my waist and told me sternly to sit, it took a while before I realized it was Damian, was he sitting on the chair all along?

"why are you here?" I asked hesitantly

"why didn't you tell me you were sick?" he asked now holding my wrist

"I'm not even if I was it's none of your business." I answered

"you want to make me look bad Lina" he said with a smirk and hand on my jaw urging me to look up at him.

"Lina?" I asked

"Yes short for Topolina" he said with what seemed like an amused look on his face

"what's Topolina?" I asked now genuinely confused

" Little mouse Lina" he said with the same look on his face

was he calling me a mouse?

The audacity of this man

"My name is Amanda not Topolina" I said trying to be as stern as possible but my lungs betrayed me and my chest felt tight, Instinctively I checked around for my inhaler.

I couldn't find it, trying to keep a calm face

"did you take anything from here?" I asked

he looked at me puzzled "anything like what?"

"stop playing dumb, I know you took it" I said now getting riled up as the panic started setting in.

I couldn't hold on any longer and finally dropped to my knees, for a second, I saw a flash of worry on his face and just as fast as it came it was gone.

"stop your drama, I know you feel better now,so stand up and save yourself the embarrassment" he said in a low harsh tone.

" please...." was all I could mutter and suddenly it got harder to breathe,my chest got tighter and I couldn't help the tear that managed to escape down my chin.

Was I really at his mercy? this evil man who stood there watching me suffer and the only thing from him was a blank expression "when you're done acting, come downstairs we need to talk."

he said as he turned his back

DAMIAN

A soft thud from behind me made me turn instantly, she was on the floor, crying and hyperventilating and for some reason it looked worse than last night, her face was turning blue and this was when I realized she wasn't acting.

" Amaya" I walked as fast as I could to her, now realizing she was asking for her inhaler.

It was with me all along, i held onto it incase she'd need it at night. Holding her up I helped her use the inhaler.

"you're just like last night" I said as soon as her breathing got better

"what do you mean last night?" she asked between her gasps for air

" like when I changed your clothes" I said now enjoying the look on her face as it turned crimson

" what do you mean changed my clothes, who said you could touch me?" she said struggling and I could sense the anger in her voice

  • BOUND BY DECEIT    The aftermath

The storm broke again that night.Thunder rolled over the hills like a warning, and the rain came harder than before, washing away every trace of what had happened at the airstrip. But no amount of rain could wash away the image from Amaya’s mind—Nancy collapsing, the sound of the gunshot echoing through the air, Damian’s face right after. He hadn’t said a word since they left Florence. Not when Kelly drove them through the countryside. Not when Amaya pressed a bandage against her arm. Not even when she whispered his name softly, trying to pull him back. The silence between them wasn’t anger—it was heavy, unspoken guilt.Kelly pulled into a secluded motel near Siena, its neon sign flickering weakly in the rain. “This is the safest I could find on short notice,” she said, glancing back at them. “No security cameras, no nosy neighbors, no questions.”Damian nodded absently. “Good.”Amaya looked at Kelly. “You’ll stay, right?”Kelly shook her head. “I’ll circle back to make sure the area

  • BOUND BY DECEIT    The chase begins

The next morning broke with a quiet unease that neither of them could ignore. The rain had stopped sometime during the night, but the air still felt heavy, the sky a pale gray sheet pressing down on the world. Amaya stood by the kitchen window, coffee in hand, watching droplets roll down the glass. Her reflection looked strange—stronger, older somehow. Maybe that was what love and survival did to a person.Behind her, Damian was already dressed, his dark jacket fitted, his movements deliberate. Every motion of his hands—loading the gun, adjusting the strap of his watch—was calm, precise, controlled. Too controlled.“You didn’t sleep,” Amaya said without turning around. He gave a small grunt. “Neither did you.”She turned, offering a half-smile. “Touché.”He finally looked at her, and for a moment, something soft flickered behind his eyes. “You don’t have to come, Amaya.”She sighed, setting down her mug. “We’re not doing that again, Damian. I’m in this. Until the end.”He walked close

  • BOUND BY DECEIT    The calm before the final storm

The morning after the chaos felt unreal. The sunlight was warm, almost too gentle compared to the night before. For the first time in what felt like forever, Amaya woke up without fear gripping her chest. The safe house was quiet, except for the steady rhythm of her heartbeat and the faint rustle of curtains swaying in the soft breeze.Damian was standing near the window, shirtless, his back to her. His shoulders looked tense, like he was still carrying the weight of everything that had happened. She sat up slowly, watching him, her heart twisting. Even in the light, he looked like a man haunted by shadows.“Couldn’t sleep?” she asked quietly. He didn’t turn around immediately. “Not really,” he said after a pause. “There’s too much on my mind.”She slid out of bed and padded toward him, the wooden floor cool under her bare feet. “You’ve been protecting everyone else,” she said softly. “When’s the last time you let someone protect you?”That made him glance over his shoulder, eyes tire

  • BOUND BY DECEIT    Heart of the storm

The night was restless, heavy with an electric tension that pressed against Amaya’s chest. Even the city seemed to hold its breath, the usual hum of traffic muted under the threat of what they knew was coming. Damian had been silent for most of the evening, his mind clearly racing, plotting their next move against Nancy. Amaya watched him from the dim light of the safe house, noting the furrow of his brows, the tight set of his jaw. She wanted to reach out, to tell him that she was with him no matter what—but the storm outside mirrored the storm in her heart.“Damian,” she whispered, stepping closer to him. “Talk to me. What’s going on in that head of yours?”He didn’t look at her immediately, but when he finally did, his dark eyes softened, betraying the intensity of his concern. “Amaya… tonight isn’t just another operation. Nancy has planned something bigger than we imagined. This is the heart of the storm.”Her stomach clenched at his words. “The heart of the storm?” she repeated,

  • BOUND BY DECEIT    Secrets unveiled

The first rays of dawn spilled through the blinds, casting the safe house in a soft golden glow. Amaya stirred in the bed, the weight of the past few days heavy on her shoulders. Her muscles ached, her mind was clouded, yet beneath it all, a strange sense of satisfaction lingered. They had disrupted Nancy’s operations, survived the confrontation, and grown stronger together—but Amaya knew that the real battle had only just begun.Damian was already awake, moving quietly around the room. He glanced at her occasionally, his dark eyes softened by concern and something else—something deeper, more intimate. There was an unspoken connection between them now, one forged in shared danger and trust.“You’re awake,” he said quietly, approaching the bed. His voice was low, calm, yet edged with that commanding presence that always made her heart skip.“I couldn’t sleep,” Amaya admitted, stretching and rubbing the sleep from her eyes. “Too many thoughts, too many… secrets.”Damian knelt beside her

  • BOUND BY DECEIT    The turning point

The morning sun broke through the curtains, casting a warm golden glow over the safe house. Despite the light, Amaya couldn’t shake the tension from the previous night. Shadows still lingered in her mind—the memory of Nancy’s eyes, the operatives’ aggression, the pulse-pounding adrenaline of the confrontation. She sat at the kitchen counter, sipping tea, trying to calm her racing thoughts. Damian moved around her with quiet efficiency, preparing breakfast, yet his eyes never left her for long. There was a new edge to him, a sharpness born from survival and strategy, but softened by the tenderness he reserved for her.“You’re too quiet this morning,” Damian observed, setting a plate of toast and eggs in front of her.Amaya forced a smile. “Just thinking,” she replied, her voice steady but her mind still replaying every moment from the previous night.Damian sat across from her, studying her. “Thinking is fine,” he said softly, “but overthinking is dangerous. You need to focus on what w
